Two things contributed to Yamini's determination now that she was on to her second challenge in the tournament. The only other female that had signed up was now out of the running and her last opponent had been particularly hung up on the fact that she was a girl. Individually, each was motivation to do her best. Together, the effect was even greater. She only hoped her next opponent wasn't so sexist. She hadn't gotten the feeling it was common from general interactions throughout the festival but this was something else.
She was standing opposite her next opponent, trying not to let herself get too distracted by the tattoos- he was obviously born here.
"I'm Yamini, from the Mantis Clan," she introduced herself with a polite nod.

Udadalvsvli was both proud and pleased that he had actually made it to the third round of the event. As much as he liked to boast about his strength, and as much as he trained to be a great defender and protector of the Ela'wadiyi, it didn't mean he was as good as he liked to believe. A small part of the humble lion had believed it very possible to get beaten during the first round, but . . luck had favored him.
Witu had been a formidable opponent, but somehow he had persevered.
When Yamini approached, he offered the lady a bow, as he had with all opponents. "A pleasure. I'm Udadalvsvli Adagaue, from Bird Clan. It's an honor to battle you, this day."
It did his heart good to see a female in the ranks. She was likely formidable, having bested a few others to get this far in to the ceremony, and he looked forward to seeing how he might fair. No matter the outcome, it was going to be a good fight.

She nodded in return to his introduction, smiling as she realized his attitude was quite different from Cassian's. It was a good sign, she thought. Hopefully there would be no questionable moves made this time. Though she would still defend her decisions, Yamini did wonder about the use of teeth. No harm unless you got carried away, that was her justification. She'd see ho this battle went.
With introductions out of the way, Yamini put a few feet between herself and her opponent and waited for him to signal that he was ready. Then, after a second's hesitation, she lunged forward to begin their duel

The large lion kept his muscles and body tense as he waited to see what Yamini would do. He was prepared to treat her like he would any lion, with as much toughness and show of strength as possible; letting her gender influence his actions wouldn't be very chivalrous or warrior like at all!
The first rule in battle was to never underestimate the enemy. Even though Sky Ceremony was more of a feat-of-strength ordeal, and all in the spirit of fun competition, he didn't know what Yamini could do.
When she lunged, he threw himself out of the way, but found himself far too slow. She was quicker than he expected. Still, using the momentum from her leap, he whirled and swatted at her with a large paw, hoping to connect.

Her first move was not particularly graceful or surprising but there were only so many opening moves in a situation like this. She was satisfied by her success but it did not last long as his paw came around and pushed her away. She bit back a yelp of surprise and kicked out as she twisted around to try to land on her feet now that she was being forced away from him.
Not a bad start but it unfortunately left her with her back to him when she landed.

When the lioness whirled around and sent a kick at him, it actually made its mark. The lion had been ready to n** -- gently -- at the female when he caught her foot square in the jaw.
Ouch.
That had not been what he had expected. In fact, it hit him square enough that it actually threw off his second attack. He saw her back exposed and took a leap, but he fell short of the mark, and gave her time for another move.

She was surprised by her hitting his jaw and it caused a delay in her reaction time- one she might not have noticed she didn't hear the thump of him landing short behind her, a clear sign she waited too long to turn about. Before he could continue from his miss, she leaped around and reached up to push him away- and hopefully off balance enough to make her next move easier.

Unfortunately for Udadalvsvli, he had been expecting the lioness to whirl around for an attack. Instead of a pounce, she pushed, and the lion hadn't quite recovered his bearing enough to stay on his paws.
Focus.
He really needed to stay focused, but it wasn't quite so easy. Already he was making some base mistakes against the lioness, and he really needed to up his game. Unfortunately though, that wouldn't be here or now as decided to put a little distance between himself and Yamini.
Maybe he just needed to start again.

If Yamini had any idea the battle could end this quickly, she might have tried to pin him and force him to give up- but they had just barely started, what fun would that be? And, unless his ego was so bruised, he would have the strength to push her away. So, as he fell, the lioness reached out and swiped at his legs to make sure that when he fell, he really hit the ground-- and then she moved to get away before he could reach out to get her.

And fall he did. He felt the lioenss swipe at him, and it was a direct hit. Unfortunately, this caused his stumble to turn in to a complete fall, which was rather ungraceful for the large thing.
Frustration began to well within him. This wasn't so much a battle as a complete catastrophe. And what if Eeva was watching!? Oh dear, he hoped she wasn't. He had started slow against Witu, but had managed to pull off a win. But against Yemini? He just wasn't on top of his game, and now these little setbacks were making his already anxious mind even more so.
No.
Don't worry about what others thought, he could pick himself up from this.
. . . couldn't he?
Struggling back to his paws, the lion quickly turned around and decided to go for a direct approach. He charged and pounced, hoping to catch her off guard and tackle her, but open to swat at her if she ran. Surely some part of him had to strike against her, maybe. . . hopefully.

She made it a good few leaps away before she heard her opponent hit the ground and the sound startled her enough to forget she was ahead, if only she would keep moving. So she turned around, pausing to watch him struggle back up to his feet. Yamini wasn't so unpracticed in this area but she had never been quite so successful at this particular strategy, it was a surprise. And she was too slow getting moving again once he came lunging at her. With a yelp, she ducked and moved out of the way- but she didn't get far enough out of the way.
When a paw struck her, she pushed against it- it made it a harder blow on her but would hopefully make it a harder motion to continue from for her opponent. Unfortunately, she wasn't completely on balance.

His paw struck -- that was a success! Unfortunately, the lioness before him seemed to have a good idea on how to battle another, for the hit wasn't nearly as potent as he had hoped. Having her lean in to it was risky, for it did mean she would take the hit, but it also held his paw up. He attempted to untangle himself from her, but in such close proximity, he couldn't exactly use his paw again or finish the move.
So it was, the lion decided to use her as a springboard. An awkward one, but unless he bit at her (which he refused to do) he would have to change tactics. Half-rearing up on his hind legs, the lion pushed against her and attempted to leap to the side. He hoped that using his strength against her might topple her over, or at least push her away and back.
It wasn't the wisest move, and it might cause him to stumble, but it was all he could think of with his paw slowed up against her.
