Uligo was amusing himself by a small creek on the jungle floor, twirling a paw around the rushing water. Water was his preferred medium for anything - hunting, gathering, playing. He knew that his brother, Defodio, was not always as keen on the liquid as he himself was, but those things happened. Siblings did not always agree with each other.

Well, what was this now? Something had trickled down the stream and bumped into his paw. Curious now, the ratel leaned forward for a closer look.

Defodio may not have shared his brother's interest in the water but they had a mutual love for causing trouble, he knew that. He was half-buried in the dirt and foliage on the jungle floor, hiding from and watching his brother as he played in the creek. He didn't have a specific plan now, he was simply confident the perfect opportunity to get Uligo would present itself. And it did- or as perfect as it was going to get waiting passively like this. When something in the water caught Uligo's attention, Defodio was already carefully extracting himself from his hiding spot- and when he leaned forward, Defodio stopped trying to be quiet and ran as fast as his little stubby legs would carry him to push his brother face-first into the water.

"Ha-aah!"

To be fair, given their reputation as troublemakers AND the fact that they loved pranking each other as often as they loved pranking everybody else, Uligo should have expected that action. Since he hadn't, however, the blue ratel got a mouthful of water instead of air and came up spluttering. The creek was shallow enough that only an idiot could drown in it, luckily, so there was no awkward swim to shore.

But Uligo refused to let Defodio distract him and poked the object that had peaked his interest. It was round. And really heavy. The ratel pushed it with paws and nose up out of the creek. Reaching his brother, he shook himself to rid his fur of excess water. Defodio might have gotten a bit wet. Too bad for him!

"Hah yourself!"

An unfortunate stumble just as he pushed his brother's face into the water kept Defodio close by, he barely had time to stumble back and puff up triumphantly before Uligo had his strange find out of the water and was shaking off.

"Waaugh!"

Yes, it was way more fun being dramatic, he decided as he put a few more stubby steps between him and his brother.

"Don't sound so serious, Uligo," he said in an almost scolding tone, "It's just a bit of water." His head shook and finally he glanced to the mysterious round object Uligo had found.

"What's that?"

Uligo laughed at his brother's expression. It was always fun to push him off balance in the slightest ways. Especially since he knew that Defodio would do the same to him at the drop of a leaf.

He snorted at his brother. "I like water, remember? You're the one squealing like a girl at a few droplets," the blue ratel teased.

The heavy round object was pushed until it came to rest squarely between the two ratels. Uligo poked it and pawed it and sniffed it. It smelled...metallic.

"I have no idea. What about you?"

Defodio rolled his eyes and moved forward to investigate the strange object. It smelled strange and looked strange and, following a careful test nibble, tasted strange. It definitely wasn't food, his teeth hadn't really done any damage to it. He put a paw on it and pressed down thoughtfully.

"I dunno," he said, patting it, "Never seen something like this before."

Well. That was..unhelpful. It was round, and, with a bit of effort, Uligo proved that it could and would roll around. But in the soft and loamy earth, the weight of the thing made it much more likely to sit and sink down slightly. It wasn't edible, it was very hard, it smelled metallic.

That was what the blue ratel knew about his find. Frowining, he rocked it back and forth in its depression. "Well I don't know what it is either. What do you think we could do with it?"

He put his foot back down on the ground and watched as Uligo pushed it back and forth, trying to determine what to do with it. It was the strangest object they'd ever found, Defodio decided, simply because they didn't know what it was or what to call it.

"Might make a good distraction," he suggested, "We can't figure it out, maybe it'll puzzle some other targets."

"I don't know, not everyone's as curious about these things as we are," Uligo responded. It would be nice if they could rely on the object's weirdness to distracted people sufficiently, but he didn't think it was quite strange enough for that.

The blue ratel poked at it some more.

"Think maybe we could trade it? I know some of the big creatures like to collect weird things like this and make them into other things." He wasn't sure what group of big things was closest and least likely to try and eat them.

Hmmm, fair enough. Besides, part of what puzzled them was the sudden appearance of it and they could barely push it around fast enough to send it mysteriously towards anybody. Maybe if they got some help from a particularly buff monkey. But they always seemed suspicious.

"Maybe," he said when Uligo suggested a trade, "But we'd have to keep it safe until we find the right creature to trade with."

The blue ratel rolled his shoulders in a shrug. "It's not like it would be that hard. Just bury it somewhere and we'll come back for it when we need it!" There was no reason to even attempt to carry the thing around (had he mentioned it was really really heavy?) unless if they knew they had someone who genuinely wanted it.

"So...where do we go to find someone who wants it?"

Defodio shrugged and started off back towards his little hiding spot, standing beside it before turning back to nod for his brother to join him. It would be easier to hide somewhere they already had a partially dug out.

"Bring it over here," he said, "Maybe a larger body of water would be a good place to start, everybody needs water, right?"

It opened himself up to plenty of unhappy opportunities to get wet but it as a logical suggestion, he thought.

Uligo pushed the round thing over into Defodio's hole and helped his brother heap dirt on top of it while he considered the suggestion. It was a good point, how everyone needed water and you could usually find a lot of creatures of all types there.

"Sounds like a plan! Let's go!" Uligo replied cheerfully. Maybe they'd be able to get something really good in trade!"
