User ImageIt was quiet.

Very quiet.

Not surprising, considering the location Keth had managed to get himself lost in. This was not just any forest, it was probably the oldest forest in all the lands. Ancient redwoods rose up like towers, their limbs stretching out far overhead to block out most of the light from the sun. A few banners of yellow managed to filter through the tough boughs, but they never reached the forest floor. Never reach even close to Keth's position on the ground. Moss blanketed the forest floor. Thick, carpeting moss that squished with every step, providing great bedding for the fawn when he tired himself out from ambling through the giant trees. The moss also provided a stable diet for Keth, as it was delightfully sweet and tasty. It also contained so much moisture that he hadn't required any liquid since he had happened across a stream several days ago.

But usually there were a few more sounds, from birds and creatures as they went about their daily business. Not the dead quiet as it was now.

Though Keth wasn't afraid. He was alert, head up, ears twitching, but not truly afraid. Nor was he truly alone. He had managed to attract the attention of a herd of will-o-wisps. The wisps of light, bobbed behind him as he slowly ambled through the moss, providing him with another source of illumination in the semi-dark of the forest. He wasn't quite sure why they followed him, but it was better to have their non-verbal presence with him then to be alone.

Keth stepped carefully, looking for the source of the silence.

With great confidence Axe marched. His powerfully muscular legs flexed with each step taken. The trained golden eyes scanned the area that he was in continuously, slowly, taking in each and every detail to place into his memory. In truth, he was actual more calm than usual... for a reason he cannot place a hoof on. He had no obligation, nothing he needed or had to do.

His wandering had him notice the silence as well, though he wasn't too worried. He was a large and strong buck, who could easily handle anything that came his way! His nostrils flared from time to time to inhale deeper... stopping short as he picked up something new. It was familiar, and something he wasn't that delighted to smell; another deer. Golden eyes narrowed slowly, gazing about, in search of this bothersome presence, sniffing a few more times to hone in on the scent. Following it easily led him to the little fawn, to which he snorted in distaste, ears flicking back. Staring at the tiny creature for awhile, he made a wide berth around it, as if it were some sort of plague that he wanted nothing to do with.

Keth could feel eyes on him, but as he peered through the redwoods he had trouble identifying the source. He had yet to use his nose as an investigative tool, as he was still young and forgetful of his five senses. Instead he relied mainly on his sight and hearing, his ears twitching to the slightest sound.

Inexperienced as he was, it was only by luck that he caught sight of something dark move amongst the tree trunks. Keth paused, red eyes intent on the spot he had last seen the movement. Was it a predator? Keth trembled in excitement of the thought of it. He was eager to prove his survival skills. To prove to himself that he could live through anything.

And with his own hubris in mind, Keth stalked forward to prove his mettle against the unknown enemy. And as he moved, he got a better view of his challenger, but only flashes of dark fur amongst the trees. Nothing to signal the species of the creature in question.

"I'm coming for you" Keth's whispered threat came out louder then intended in the quietness of the forest. A silly folly that he regretted as soon as the words had left his lips.

He was moving on to inspect a nearby bush when he heard the little fawn's voice flutter just above the high grasses below. Instantly, the large buck stopped in his tracks, ears remaining stiff, eyes narrowing straight ahead of him with growing annoyance. It seemed this was a trailing type of youngster.... great... it was often a bother that most of his kind didn't have mothers or fathers to raise them, so that the youngling's wouldn't roam wildly.

Snorting, he turned fully, slowly, eyes snapping down to the tiny black form that was bundled to the ground. He stepped closer till he was right in front of the baby buck, powerful muscles flexing to fully intimidate, head lifted high, lips straight and bemused.

He said nothing for a long while, just peering down his snout at the fawn, presenting the 'prey' the youngster had been hunting. "A foolish decision.." a deep, low, and rich voice rumbled from Axe, easily matching his powerful demeanor.

Keth paused, as large powerful legs the color darkness stopped before him. He let his eyes travel upwards, to the great buck that they belonged to. Such size, such power, Keth had never seen the like of it before. This was not your normal buck; he was a glory buck, made of power and strength instead of lightness and grace. He was perfect. If Keth was older, and perhaps a doe, this moment would have been classified as being lovestruck. He stood there, mouth slightly agape and stared.

Till the deep rumble broke the silence. It took a few moments for Keth to collect himself. He knew that the buck had spoken the words, as they matched his appearance perfectly, it was a matter of actually focusing on what he had said.

"...Not so foolish....I met you didn't I? And I am ever glad I did. You're amazing!" The fawn's voice started out tentative and ended up almost in a shout. All Keth's exuberance and awe laced his words and his glittering red eyes shone with hero-worship. "I'm Keth, Keth-Selhan."

Peh. Love. Good thing he didn't believe in that nonsense. He would have snorted, but instead his gaze narrowed even more sharply with clear displeasure of how the fawn was looking up at him. How annoying. It made his nose wrinkle slightly, into what would be a mild snarl if he were human.

"Yes, foolish." he corrected sternly, the flattery getting no where with the youngster. His name wasn't even taken into account, bypassed and disregarded without care, "Stop following me." he ordered in a manner that made no room for excuses, or plea's. He wanted to be alone. That is how he preferred it. The child would simply get in his way. He didn't move, and stood as still as a statue, to make his point clear as day.

Keth noticed the small nose wrinkle and the displeasure that the buck's tone held. It bashed against his hero-worship but didn't completely erase the admiration the fawn felt for the buck. He missed the buck's lack of acknowledgement towards his name...but he did notice that the buck did not provide a name of his own. So Keth gave him one of his own choosing. "Shadow-walker...I am looking to become like you...and although you don't like it, I feel that the best way to become strong is to find something to emulate." The fawn choose his words carefully, and kept his tone even. It no longer held the exuberance of earlier, but remained controlled. "I found you." ...and I will follow you. Keth didn't add on the last bit, but his determined expression said it all.

He stood and waited. If this buck moved, he would try his damnedest to chase.

A brow was crooked with the faux name given to him, but he did not acknowledge it, instead went to focusing on the words after. What a strange fawn. He was still young. He didn't know what he wanted to become yet. Another firm snort was given, golden eyes rolling with annoyance. Why'd he have to get shafted with this kid? There were plenty of other bucks out there, right?

His gaze wandered off as he pondered, remaining silent, and seemingly disinterested. Now he was a rather gruff, and aggressive stag, but he wasn't cold. He couldn't leave this pathetic little creature all on its own. Even... if he did seem to be messed up in the head.
"You've got too much imagination, kid." he muttered under his breath, "I'm not a babysitter." his gaze slid back to the fawn pointedly, narrowing his gaze to make his point clear.

Keth met the buck's narrowed gaze with a look of his own. Not trying to stare the stag down, but trying to hold his ground. Trying not to back down before the mighty creature's look. "..you won't even know I'm here. I won't bother you, I swear!" A little bit of desperation crept in to the end of Keth's statement and he winced inwardly. "Really. I just want to learn how you are...as you are."
