Life went on, as it always did for hunters. It was a strange limbo- you wanted to mourn the lost hunters, but in the same instance, there was no time for such trifles. A hunter just dealt with it as best they could. Ami was not dealing well.

Which baffled her more when she walked by an infirmary window and saw a ghost.

It must have been a hunter that merely looked like him. He was a statue, probably being displayed in the cemetery because they had nowhere else to put him. Besides, she had duties. Her ice was already thin, she couldn't afford to stop by mysterious Marcus lookalike's room without reason.

---

Later she'd brought a single book to Cass and Marcus' house. She was standing at the front door, trying to take deep breaths. If Cass started crying in front of her, she was going to cry too. So she needed to prepare herself to not cry.

She just had a gift for Cass. No it wasn't really a gift, was it? Quite frankly, Ami wasn't sure why she had the book. Dracula, Marcus' supposed favorite. Did she want to give it to Cass as a memory? Did Cass even like reading?

Ami had no clue why she was doing these things. A knock on the door. No stopping now. "Ah, hello? It's Ami ..."

The ‘ghost’ of Marcus was content in being called a ghost. He didn’t want attention drawn to him. He wanted to be left alone. He just wanted to enjoy the feeling of being alone. Of no Dis- but no Cass. That was what was painful. Cass had been transferred the day after. If he’d been less a fool he could have seen her. Reading her tweets had been painful. More than that, she was out of range. She had no idea that he was even alive, and knowing her- she was always a people person. Her alone was worry some.

By the time he’d found out, he was back in his house. Alone. When Dis had finally reformed- The weapon had been almost affectionate. Almost. He didn’t recall what happened, played innocent but as Marcus insisted. The illusion broke again quickly enough, the cold, acidic laugh filling his head along with the promise that ‘now that there is no reason to hide, they can be open with each other’. He didn’t want to be open. He just wanted his fiance home. He wanted his wedding. He wanted his sanity back.

Depressed covered Marcus well.

Not expecting visitors, the moon hunter was in sweatpants, a shirt and slippers. He might have been eating toast. Sad toast. Eating was depressing, eating alone at least. The knock at the door was from someone he didn’t expect at least. Opening the door for the life trainee he smiled a bit, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Hey Ami. What’s up?”

Hi Cass. I know this sounds somewhat strange, but this book was Marcus' favorite, and I borrowed it so I wanted to give it back to you. Rehearsed a thousand times. Just give the book and leave. It was a simple enough thing to remember. Easily repeated ten thousand times more so she didn't mess up.

As soon as the door opened, her mouth opened to begin her little speech, but as her eyes scanned upwards, she saw the ghost, yet again.

A scowl came across her face. Unexpectedly, she was angry. "You are supposed to be dead," she spat. Why did she feel so mad at him?

Well, there was the ball of sunshine he was used to. Ami being Ami. Sighing, Marcus nodded, opening the door for her to invite her in. "Yeah well. Sorry to disappoint. I'm alive." He shrugged, frowning a bit before looking down at her hands. "Oh." She had his book.

"Did you enjoy it?"

Ami looked at the book like it was a foreign object, having totally forgotten her entire purpose for being her. She shoved it into his arms and said, "Yeah it was just great."

She crossed her arms and pushed past him, the little ball of indignation she always was. "Do you have any idea what you put me through? Put Cass through?" Why oh why was she so angry at him? It's not like he had expected to die, or meant to. It wasn't his fault and yet she was glaring daggers at him like he was a target.

Not to mention now she looked like a complete idiot to Lex. She'd gotten all upset over Marcus' death, only to now see that it was completely pointless. She'd opened herself up for a man who was still around.

She was mad with him. She could join the club. He was pretty sure there was a club at this point. People who wanted him dead or people who expected him to stay dead. Alas, the survivor was still alive. Sorry, try harder.

"Sorry." He half listened, half meandered back to the couch to sit and slouch. They'd get a nice couch. They had semi-nice seats, and a wonderful bed- They. Cass. Oh he'd just depressed himself more. "She's worse." The second thing out of his mouth. "She doesn't know I'm still alive." Looking over to Ami he sighed.
"I... I'm a bit surprised. You're one of the last people I'd consider to get upset over what happened."

"Why? Why wouldn't I get upset. You died." As much as Ami wanted to deny it, there was a strong hint of worry and fretfulness in her voice. She still wasn't used to the idea of Marcus being dead. Other people? Sure, she was always sad to lose a hunter, but Marcus was someone she knew. A face, one she could easily recognize.

She looked at the couch, fretting between sitting with him on the couch, or continuing to stand disapprovingly a few feet away.

A sigh, letting out her internal frustrations, and then she took to sitting on his right, legs bent slightly so her knees were resting on his legs. "Of course I would be worried. You're ... I don't know." Friend was the word she was looking for, but Ami struck it down. She didn't have friends. A change of subject. "Why doesn't Cass know?"

It wasn't like he planned for it. If he planned for that wort of thing- Wait. He... kind of had. With Cass. God damn.Looking over at Ami, who was not across the room by her own choice- She wasn't emotional by any means. So to hear it. Guilt washed over him. Cass, Cass- he'd really just worried about one. Maybe he should have worried more. "I'm a friend maybe?" He sighed, sinking further into the seat.

"I spent a day in the infirmary, enjoying a life without Dis. I was alone and.. it felt nice. But by the time I got home? She'd been moved to another base. Now she's out of contact range. I can't get to her." More slouching. "I think I really ******** this one up Ami."

Ami ignored the comment about friendship. Marcus wasn't a friend. Of course he wasn't.

Yet it really hurt seeing Marcus like this. He was the rock. He was the one who always knew what to say. He called shots while she fell apart. To see him wallowing in his own misery worried her to an internal panicked frenzy. "I ... I think she'll be okay. It's probably just a quick mission for formality ... or ... She'll be back." Ami nodded. She had to believe those sentiments, and so did Marcus.

More quietly, she said, "What's wrong with Dis? And I don't mean the deweaponization." Ami stared at him quite seriously. He couldn't beat around the bush with this one.

A rock on the outside, more like a marshmallow on the inside. Soft, useless, and not very good for you. he never thought himself as someone people depended on. He wanted to be, but he didn't think he was. He did- Dis made it a mess. He wasn't sure where it was his thoughts, or just ones Dis had helped fabricate. Ones that Dis had boosted for his own means to and end. "No Ami, she won't be. She- smiles all the time but she won't tell you when she's hurt. She can fool me even at times. And that's why it's not okay. Because now she's hurting and I know she'll try to cover it up but she can't. No one has told me how long she'll be gone, how dangerous her missions will be, if I can even see her. She thinks I'm gone. Why come back if you think there isn't anything to come back too?"

He resisted the urge to kick a chair in anger. It would just break something and he'd have to fix it. Just like everything else in his life. "And Dis- I let him have too much control, I depended on him too much. I thought I was protecting myself but in the end, I played right into his hands. And now the world knows. Dis is insane and power hungry, willing to do anything to get it. Willing to go as far as to risk my own ******** sanity for it." Hate was a rare thing to lace Marcus's words, but in that moment, hate was thick in his voice.

Ami looked at Marcus very sternly. Even in his words alone, Ami could see how much Marcus cared for his fiancee, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. At the time though ... that was how she knew it'd be okay. She touched his arm very gently, barely even there and said, "Marcus." She needed to make something clear to him. "Cass loves you. She's hurting right now, but she'll come back. To you. And you need to be there when she comes back.."

It was something that Ami didn't just think, she knew. Because if she knew Adam was back in New York and loved her, there was no way she'd stay hurt forever. She'd run back as quick as she could. A light squeeze to his arm and the hand dropped.

Ami bit her lip at the story of Dis. She could talk love problems all day, but when it came to weapons? She'd never heard of a weapon who'd literally grown insane. That, and weapons generally didn't ... well DO that to their owners. It was a partnership- they were taught that from day one. "Have you tried talking to Edith ... or Dr. H even ...?" She fidgeted. "I suppose that is out of the question though, with your promotion ..." Really positive peggy, that Ami.

The touch to his arm made him sigh, relax a bit, hate leave him. He just wanted her back. Or to be able to go to her. "But what if something happens to her?" He touched his necklace, thumb running over the gem. "What if something happens to me?" His voice was softer. There was a fragility to it. He worried about the inevitable. About that great reality they all faced.

A sad look to Ami he shrugged. "H maybe. The thing is, H is a guy who doesn't do things out of the goodness of his heart. He'd want something. The problem is I don't know what he'd want. I'm a moon, a moon with a large blemish on his record. Another? H doesn't strike me as the type to want to fix something people consider broken. He could ask me to 'help' with experiments but well."

They both knew you didn't want to play test subject. No one did.

"And Edith gave me my last shot. I had my final warning. If I go to her-" a heavy groan as he rubbed the bridge if nose. "I dunno. I might be transferred to sun, likely mist. That or they might shut him down." Blue eyes looked at the life hunter. "Permanently. But the thing that I guess is really ******** up?"

He reached for the weapon tossing the clip onto the table. "He loves me Ami. In his twisted ******** up way, Dis does care on some level. He genuinely thinks he can get what he wants while making me happy. The kicker is I guess I knew. I never took him seriously. I thought it was a lot of hot air. I guess a part of me thought that maybe if I gave in a bit, he'd learn. But we can see how well that turned out. My own fault, I ignored it. Now I just have to deal with it."

"People change sure, but," she said rather monotonously. "You don't get to see the way you look at Cass though. It's ... covetable." She sighed and said, "So shut up and just appreciate the fact that you are both worrying about the exact same thing." She stared at him and repeated, "Both."

She could see Marcus visibly slouching on the couch and rolled her eyes. Even if they were .... friends, it was childish. "Sit up." Ami wasn't his mother, but she could nag all she wanted.

Ami looked at Marcus with a "you are so stupid" look. "If you give a screaming child what it wants, it doesn't learn anything Marcus." She flicked his forehead lightly and said, "Dis is your screaming child."

He snorted. "Yeah, but she doesn't even know I'm alive. She thinks I'm dead. Have you seen Cass depressed Ami? It's- God, it's the worst thing. Then again that just might be in my personal opinion." Lovebird without it's mate. That was Marcus. He did roll his eyes over at Ami.

"I'll slouch in my own house if I want to." A childish remark. "It's not like I'm sleeping in the life labs." Pot shot taken.

Still he looked at the weapon. "Maybe. He certainly screams and throws fits." The flick just got a scowl. "So what would you suggest, aside from the leads. I can't exactly give him a spanking. Hell, he'd probably enjoy it."

"I thought you were dead too, but I'm handling it quite well thank you," she said. Well no, it hadn't been dealt with well, but she was coping and doing her best. "If it's really bothering you that much, why not go visit her? Use your day off to go visit her base," It was the best way she could think to cure obnoxiously lovesick Marcus. She didn't like lovesick Marcus, so the faster he was gone, the better.

A scowl at the sleep location comment. She could sleep where she wanted as well. A bed or a table, it didn't make a difference when she got the same amount of progress done.

His question was hard. A hunter certainly couldn't be removed from their weapon. Well, they could- she was living proof of that, after all, but it wasn't a desirable option. It would leave Marcus weak and exposed, and then he might REALLY die. That wouldn't get them anywhere.

"Have there ever been hunters who have ... switched weapons? I suppose that's not very helpful ... You could switch to life or death and do more lab work ... but let's face it-" She turned to her friend and gave him a slanted smile, "You would suffer immensely from sitting still so long." Marcus was far too active for anything like sitting behind a microscope and pipetting FEAR nuclei all day long.

Her eyes fell on the various spots in his house that were obviously repaired by hand. "You could request a home job? To my knowledge, the labs are still incredibly beat up- portals are still down and what not. Why not do some homeland security for a change? It would keep you from having to summon your weapon, or even keep him on your person." It didn't particularly solve the problem, but at least delayed it to give them some time to think. "You'll have to face Dis eventually, as unfortunate as the unpleasant conversation will be." She blinked, realizing that she was rambling, and probably boring Marcus at that. "Ah ... sorry." It was a bit embarrassing to rattle off solutions like that. Chalk it up to a life division trait.
