-Sources of Magic-
Magic comes from energy. If there is no energy to draw from, then there is no magic. There are more than one types of energy sources for magic.
-Types of Magic-
❧Archaic
Archaic sources are the primeval, always battling Light and Dark energies. Beings that are unaligned to a ‘side’ of this struggle cannot easily gain energy from either one and require an access point such as a sorcerous object to do so.
Light
Races Races that can use Light energy without an access point include: Seraphs and lower angels, Light Elves, Enmortals, and Guardians.
Uses Light energy can be used to fuel magickal spells, create constructs out of light, for energy blasts, and protection/defensive magick. It is most powerful when used with good, balancing, or justified ends in mind.
Limitations and Weaknesses Light magic has a main crux of dark energy (be it from an object, caster, spell, or other source) that can cancel or overcome an attack depending on its power, as well as magical attacks and means of the same amount power that can possibly negate or weaken an attack. When a user is casting with malicious (non-justified) intent in mind, it becomes tainted and is no longer pure, rendering it weaker.
Dark
Races Races that can use Dark energy without an access point include: Grigori, Demons, Dark Elves, Dark Enmortals, Elder Vampyres, and Elder Lycans.
Uses Dark energy can be used to fuel magickal spells, create constructs out of darkness, for energy blasts, and offensive magick. It is most powerful with chaotic, and blood shedding intentions in mind.
Limitations and Weaknesses Dark magic has a natural crux of Light and Spirit(be it from an object, caster, spell, or other source) that can cancel or overcome an attack depending on its power, as well as magical attacks of similar strength.
❧Elemental
Elemental magic is drawn from nature, a magic that circles around balance and a union between the powers of the Elements and the being calling upon them. The magic is reciprocal, and requires a give and take relationship. The Elements will give their power, but they will take away energy from the user after a spell is wrought to maintain balance.
Races All races can gather energy from the elements. Most beings are aligned to only one element that connects best to their spirit or aura. Fire to those of fierce will and violent or energetic nature, Wind to those of the ever changing and uncertain, Water to the calm and smooth that hide a temper, Earth or Metal to the strong and stubborn, Storms call to those of darker and wicked lines, and Spirit to the beings aligned true to Light, while Blood is to beings aligned closer to the dark.
Uses In order to take energy from the aligned element, the user must connect to the element and in doing so they can summon the element and use it for offensive or defensive magic. Few magicks can heal, Spirit and Earth being the major two. Fire can purge, Water can clean and soothe, but they cannot heal entirely. Blasts, weapons, walls, etc. are all options for use. The greater Elemental users are capable of say, creating bubbles of air around them under water or creating wings of flame around them.
Limitations and Weaknesses Elemental wielders cannot use opposite elements at the same time. No water meets fire affairs, not unless they are using another source of energy beside the elements. Fire can be fizzled out by water; air can slice through water, etc. The true weakness of Elemental magic is that it taxes from the user, tires them because their connection to the Element pulls from the environment, which demands payment in energy after use.
❧Auric Magic
Auric magic draws upon auras of the living things of the world. It is perhaps the least used magic, as few can see auras and much less use them. Auric magic requires the wielder to be capable of opening themselves to the energy world and call on the auras around them.
Races For the most part, it is only Enmortals, Guardians, and Elder Fey who can access Auric magic, as it requires a connection to the Ley Lines of the Earth. Spirits can see Auras, and use them to draw energy, but not create magic. Objects can be used to see the auras, but not use them.
Uses Fueling magical spells, conjuring, blasts, healing, fueling other major magics like Elements as a substitute to energy payment, and traveling Ley Lines.
Limitations and Weaknesses Auric magic is easily pushed out of hand if the user is unfocused. When drawing on auras, it requires opening oneself to the energy world, which can easily lead to an empathetic link with the world around them. Sensual overload can occur without mental protection. Auric magic is generally used only as an energy source, and because of that its offensive uses tend to short come the defensive.
❧Necromancy and Shadow Summoning
Necromancy and Shadow manipulation are lesser forms of Dark Magic. It involves summoning and the dead, wraiths, shadows, and on the odd occasions a weak demon.
Races Only dark beings can use these powers. Grigori and the Fallen and Vampyres being the most powerful. (Dark Fey can, but they are still connected to nature, and will be weakened by the use)
Uses Summoning shadows, summoning the dead as zombies, gollums, or devils, summoning low class demons, and walking through shadows.
Limitations and Weaknesses This magic is naturally weakened by Light magic. Zombies can be destroyed by fire and complete obliteration, and holy objects can disconnect the spell.
-Lesser Magics-
❧Mind Magic
Mind Magic, as its name gives, requires a strong mind. This magic pulls energy from the user, unless they somehow use another energy source to cover the price. Objects can be used to achieve this sort of magic.
Races Any race can have a sort of mind magic. Telepathy, empathy, mind control, hypnosis, etc. all fall under this category.
Uses Mind control, mind reading, influencing, emotion reading, emotion controlling, telekinesis (moving objects with the mind)
Limitations and Weaknesses Opening one’s mind out to use for magic leaves it unprotected and capable of being invaded. Other magics can shut down mind magic by attacking the motor skills of the mind. It does not work unconscious.
❧Physical Magics
Magics use to alter physical form, control physical characteristics, etc. This magic likewise requires energy from the user’s body.
Races Fey, Humans (witches, warlocks, and other magic users), Vampyre, and Lycans are the most known for using these powers.
Uses Glamour (a magic curtain over ones true appearance), altering appearance, pheromone control, physical beauty, enhancing strength, enhancing senses, enhancing speed, enhancing durability.
Limitations and Weaknesses The trouble with these powers is often they can be seen through by another spell, and some humans are born to see through glamours with the Sight. Phermone control can end with some crazy stalkers on a bad day for the Lycan or Vampyre Clan. These require energy from the body, (all but pheromone control, which is natural for Lycans and Succubi Vampyre) and constant use can tire out the user.
❧Sorcery
Sorcery involves the act of charming or bespelling objects to do certain things, and most Sorcerers can access an elemental or archaic magic to do such a thing. It is generally a magic that is paired with another skill, such as basic enchanting or alchemy.
Races Any race can use sorcery.
Uses Bespelling objects to do a certain thing, such as flying shoes, creating holy or unholy objects, summoning spells, and charming or hexing objects, people, or places with spells. Sorcerers can sense magic in use.
Limitations and Weaknesses Sorcery does not work as an energy source. It cannot be used to create energy shields or barriers, nor can it be used directly as an energy blast. It relies on the users knowledge of spells and their own energy.
❧Enchanting
Enchanters are generally aligned with hedge-witches, as it is a weaker magic with no real tactical use. For the most part it involves creating potions or charms that affect emotions, illnesses, or physical means.
Races Any race can use Enchanting magic.
Uses Unlike most magics, Enchanting is used only to work on people/beings. It is often used for things such as love spells and altering emotions, good luck spells, ailment and illness relief, and occasionally a weak use of glamour. It requires little energy, unless the spells or enchantments affect a large group of people.
Limitations and Weaknesses Like any magic, enchanting requires energy. The larger the spell, the farther the range, the weaker the user becomes. Enchanting has little to no offensive use, as it is not a direct casting for violence.
❧Alchemy
Alchemy is a merger between magic and science. Most alchemists are searching for the secret to eternal life, and can do only altering of physical objects.
Races Any race can use Alchemy, but generally it is non-magical humans who dabble with it.
Uses Extended, but not eternal life, creating jems from stones, gold from copper and metals, and magical explosions.
Limitations and Weaknesses Magic does not merge easily with alchemy, it can be dangerous and implode in a second. It requires immense energy and is often invoked with a pentagram or pentacle that involves summoning a demon or the elements. If that gets out of hand, should the pentacle break, death follows. It is not an offensive magic for the most part, or defensive, more a wealth gaining opportunity.
❧Shapeshifting
Shapeshifting, not in relation to the Shifting of Lycans, is a skill that requires utter control over one’s physical body. Mastering it requires extreme amounts of energy and self-control.
Races Elder Vampyres, Lower Fey, Serpah, and Fallen have all been known to use this ability.
Uses Shifting one’s appearance physically (not with glamour), shifting into an animal, and in the case of Elder Vampyres, into mists as well as one animal.
Limitations and Weaknesses Shape shifting requires only physical energy not drawn on by another source. It is for this reason mostly Paranormal beings with extra strength are able to shape shift. In between shifts one is weak and open for attack. If injured in a Shift, they must shift back into their normal form to heal.
❧The Sight
The Sight is often associated with seeing the Future. It can also be used to walk through and read dreams, see through glamours, and has been said to be as unpredictable as a midsummer thunderstorm.
Races All races can be gifted with the Sight. Most are of Paranormal nature, but humans are occasionally gifted to see through glamour.
Uses Walking through unprotected minds as they dream, seeing glimpses of the future, seeing through glamour, and on occasion a spoken premonition.
Limitations and Weaknesses The future is always changing, and those with the Sight only see bits and pieces of it. Walking through dreams, one must not meddle or they could lose themselves in that person’s mind permanently. Often when a human first sees through glamour, they are driven mad.
