Since Roar's return, initially Jerry had wanted to gush about how much he missed him and was so relieved he was back and sob about everything that had befallen his life but that gravely, judgmental voice in his head had made him clam up.
Roar knew, though, that the man was... off kilter. On tender ground. At least the man seemed functional, so as far as the weapon was concerned, Jerry could do what he liked. It wasn't until the two had gone to the training fields that Roar could feel it. With all the chaos that seemed to follow his hunter, when his weapon was in his hand, there was a sense of control.
Jerry exhaled deeply, letting the distant dummies fall into his sight.
One shot, Roar purred, no flailin'.
Jerry concentrated. The sips from the flask in his pocket had steadied his hands, let his mind clear.
He pulled the trigger. There was a resonating explosion, a burst of sound punctuated by the tinkling of falling wooden shards. Like the music of rain, but more melodic in it's varying donk-donk-thunks.
Jerry sighed, listening with his eyes shut for a few moments before pulling back to reward himself with another sip.
Atta' boy.

The boom was less soothing to the life trainee making his way to the training grounds. It reminded him of playing Jenga, located right under the explosion testing grounds, and that had made him a nervous wreck. Hearing it now only caused him to jump, stopping as he looked at as bits of wood flew through the air, a crater left where he had know a dummy once stood.
I know what you're thinking.
What's that? His eyes were on the crater.
I can do damage too!
Yeah....SURE you can. Sure, he had his weapon back, but COME ON! Look at that! He just blew it to smithereens!
His eyes looked to Jerry who was, at this moment, drinking out of a flask, the smoke still coming off his weapon. Damn. It was sad to know a guy with such a destructive gun was drinking.
"I'm guessing that isn't koolaid in that." He said as he made his way over.

Jerry sighed. A year ago he might have floundered, stuffed it away, blushed and given the fellow trainee a cheerful greeting. His patience had run out, and his 'zen' was about to be disrupted.
"What do you want, Melvin." He had tried to be nice to the guy but the Lifer had made it clear he didn't respect him any.

Melvin just paused, glancing at the distant dummies and the crater among them, then to the dummies all the way in the front. Barely that far away, laughable in comparison, and still something Melvin missed half the time.
"Nothing....just training." He held up his own gun, far smaller than the bazooka that looked like it could crush a shoulder but somehow being held as if it was just a small bird. He reminded himself that he was a Sun and thus the bigger weapon, but it didn't help him looking to the side. Despite the man looking like a slob and drinking, what was held as the most important thing here - fighting - put him on a higher tier. At least in this.
"Saw you shooting." He picked a invisible fleck off his own gun. "Not many gunners around here."

"There's plenty of range weapons around." He returned the cap to the flask and slipped it back into his pocket before hefting Roar back up again. "But always could have more in my opinion. Does get tricky if you're up close, though."
Jerry pushed his glasses up his nose, regarding the crater before debating his next target. "At least with Magic you don't have to worry about running out of ammunition, right? Ahahahahahaha."
Another Blast. As the air cleared from the ringing after sound, Jerry was humming along. One of the closer dummies blown to pieces. He paused to rub his shoulder. The return of fear shields had been a blessing, but Roar's kick still was murder on his shoulder. Alcohol worked well as a buffer. He was enjoying it.

"Oh, I just haven't met anyone with a gun before. Everyone has....giant axes or giant boomerangs or giant swords." He mentally measured Saliva for the millionth time before moving to stand before the row of closer dummies. He had yet to fire though. It was one thing to just flat out suck in front of a Sun who had a sword or axe. There was no comparison because they weren't working in the same group of weapons. Bazooka or not, Jerry's weapon was still a type of gun.
The blast had him jumping in place again, and he held up a arm to shield himself from any bits of dust and debris. He couldn't even hit the dummy, let alone destroy it.
"So....has your weapon always been that..." He made a round-about gesture with his hand. "...large?" He didn't look at the Sun, instead raising up Saliva as he tried to line up his weapon with the dummy.
When I tell you to eat more, you get all huffy that you're the right size. Hypocrite!

"Nope. They grow as you do, really." Jerry gently stroked Roar's quills, the massive beast under his arm purring in his head, the smoke curling from his skull-like face almost looking like a pleased, proud smile. The lights from it's eyes flickered as though looking to the trainee curiously. "When I was starting out, he was... I don't know. More of a bottle rocket." The weapon huffed in the back of his head.
More than that.

"Oh!" He said, sounding relieved to hear that Jerry's own weapon hadn't been that big. "I mean, it's not a big deal or anything. I don't care about the size, it's just..." He gestured at Jerry's weapon, before he figured he really wasn't going anywhere with what he was trying not to say.
Your too brittle right now to lift anything that big. If you don't bulk up, I'm growing smaller.
What?
You hear me.
Frowning, he returned to lifting up his gun to line up with the dummy. He spent a good minute trying to get things lined up before he fired, landing the hit on the dummy a few directly in front of him, but more towards what would be the far shoulder. The green egg splattered and sizzled slightly. Due to the kickback, something Melvin was still adjusting to, he had to work on re-aiming all over again - which would take him a few minutes more before he was confident enough to fire.
It certainly was no bazooka blast.
"Did your weapon, um, did it do a lot of damage when you first started?" He asked.

"I ended up on my butt a lot." Jerry admitted with a light laugh. He lifted Roar up again, taking aim carefully. This was.... nice.
His blast only took off the dummy's arm this time, and he shook his head, "It just takes practice, really. And trust in your weapon to guide you, y'know? We don't just... arrive ready soldiers." He still wasn't a ready soldier, not really, but... compared to when he had first started off? "If you don't get better with your weapon," He tapped his scar-boiled cheek with the back of a nuckle, "You'll end up pretty as me, ahahaha."

Melvin was not laughing, instead looking at the scar with wide yes. He had seen many people around here with scarring and had tried his best not to directly stare - something that was a bit hard at times when you noticed some rather nasty ones in the showers. Since Jerry directly pointed at it, laughing it off, Melvin couldn't look away from what was probably a painful burn at the time. He didn't ask how it got there, knowing it probably was better he didn't. He had yet to really even get into the Infirmary yet.
"Yeah..." He gave a forced, small laugh in return to the man's almost manic laughter. "That's why I'm training, because everyone says so. Wasn't carrying a gun before I came here." He still worried when he had Saliva summoned, wondering if he'd accidentally pull the trigger and burn his leg or burn off his hair.
"But, I don't know many people who have used guns, you know?" The only range weapon he met was Otto, and a boomerang did not have a trigger. "Any pointers?"

"I was going to be a music teacher," Jerry shifted Roar down under his arm, pulling his flask out again casually. "Don't know if you even would have recognized me ahaha."
A quick sip.
"Advice? Well.. I mean. Roar's not really a gun... but if the principal's really the same... you just have to make your shots count. If you miss, don't worry about it, just take another breath before you take aim. I'm always..." He gestured with the flask, unsure how to articulate it, "Flustered. Usually. A lot, anyway. But when I'm in battle, it's just me, Roar, and whatever's between his cross-quills."

Hmm. That wasn't exactly the shimmering kernel of game-changing information he wanted. He had been hoping that someone who had been here longer, that had a weapon that at least fired instead of swung, would give him something that could help him be better with his own weapon. Instead, he was left just rather concerned about Jerry and what seemed to be a drinking habit.
"I wouldn't have thought you the teaching type." He feared for this nation's youth if they were letting people like Jerry through their institutions. "Do you usually drink to calm your nerves when fighting?" He said, glancing at the flask Jerry seemed to have no shame in showing. If he wasn't going to be discreet, then it was up for discussion.
When he took more than enough time to aim, he fired again. It just barely grazed the legs of the dummy. Too low. Not even close to being a worthwhile hit.

"Self medication," Jerry's expression became a touch dangerous as his eyes narrowed on Melvin as though daring him to make a big deal about it. "I'm not DRUNK. It calms my nerves." He stuffed the flask away again, hefting up his weapon to take aim. "And believe me. I was a different man before the island."

"Hey, I was just asking. I get a bit concerned when someone who can do that.." He gestured to the craters Jerry was making. "..is keeping a flask." It was a legit concern and one Melvin was not afraid to address. If the Sun was tipsy and blurred the line between who was an enemy and who might look like a friend, then that was dangerous for everyone. Melvin didn't want to go on the field and see Jerry stumbling about and accidentally pulling the trigger, blowing someone's head off. People had died after all before.
"What sort of man were you?" He had to wonder. From what he gathered from Rep, he was a thug. From Rin, she was in a institution. He didn't know about the others, but they seemed relatively normal.
Melvin slowly tried to line up his weapon again, something that usually took the most time for him.

"What does it matter?" Jerry narrowed his eyes on the next target. The bast went wide, and he gave a disgruntled hiss as he barely singed the thing.
