The recent events of the Haunted House excursion and the return of their old gym teacher notwithstanding, Ren had spent the majority of his time the past few days trying to figure out just what he was doing with himself anymore. His conversation with Belladonna, though long past, still felt fresh in his mind, the pained look on her face and the tears in her eyes when she realized just what it was that he had been doing, and why he had been going to the human world.

Those that had dissipated during Red's comeback only furthered his frustration, reminded him of his weakness, his inability to protect those he cared about. He had been all but useless during the fight against the hunters, and he had lost track of LW, Tybalt, and Jove almost instantly upon entering the Haunted House.

To put it lightly: Renaissance the gryphon, was useless.

His parents had been right all along, he thought with anger, sitting in his room, picking at a stray thread on the comforter of his bed. He had fought them for so long, and had argued every step of the way, but in the end they had been right. He was pathetic. He was useless. He could hardly protect the ones he loved.

Which was why he needed to continue going down the road he had chosen. Continue the Lair Tasks, grow stronger. The idea of killing humans to harvest their FEAR was hardly likeable; in fact, it made him nauseated just thinking about it again, but he had no other choice. He'd already told Belladonna this.

There was no other path to take.

If one would have entered the dorm room below a certain gryphon's, they would have found quite the amusing sight. LW paced around her room, tail swishing agitatedly, restless and clearly bothered by something (or several somethings for that matter). Behind her, Austin followed in her footsteps, thinking this was some new game. Then there was her mimic, rolling along after Austin's tail. And chasing after BB was Nightwish, attempting to paw at him. Then finally, sprawled along the top of her head, her batling: Callix.

One: As per usual and typical of Amityville, things had happened. And that Jackdamned haunted house and struck again! Quite impressively this time around!

Two: Hunters.

Three: Red. Red was back! She didn't know how, and wasn't going to even try and understand it, but her favorite werewolf teacher was back!

Four: Jacking hunters named Dakota!

Five: Ren....

She stopped pacing, tilting her head towards the ceiling with an almost broken look. What... could she do for him? It... she felt like she wasn't doing enough. Wasn't trying hard enough. He wasn't the same. Or rather, something was bothering him but he wouldn't tell her. And she didn't pressure him to explain himself. At least not yet. But...

The collision of all her minipets jarred her thoughts and before her mind fully formed the thought, LW leaped over them and darted out her door, prowling upstairs towards her boilfriends room. She didn't want to be alone with her thoughts (especially those that involved the hunters... ) and her mind worried for Ren. Leaving him alone and what could happen. She... she wanted to make sure he was okay. Still there. Still... her Ren.

Not bothering to knock, LW slipped into his room, took one look at Ren and sighed softly. Shoving everything to the back of her mind, LW pasted on a smile and moved to gently slide her fingers through his hair.

"Hey." She said quietly and fondly.

Zippy made a snuffling noise and shuffled across the bed to him, laying his head across Ren's lap and drooling all over his leg. Ren gave the dog a pointed look, muttered something that sounded suspiciously like "Just like Tybalt" and promptly pushed the cluppy's head off of his knee.

He was not about to be deterred from his thoughts, which were just as convoluted, confused, and messy as his room, which he had not bothered to tidy up for several days. There were clothes on the floor, his many foxfires bounding around scraps of discarded paper, and on the desk was a notebook with illegible scrawls across the pages where Ren had not been paying attention to what he had been writing.

He wished life were easier, that choices did not have to be made that were so difficult.

That he could simply do what he wanted to do without having to struggle to attain it.

LW not bothering to knock was a normal occurrence - and not just for the werewolf. Ren's habitual leaving of his door open had not yet broken in the two years he had been at Amityville High, and he was not about to start changing that now, but he was not sure whether or not he could bear to see LW right now. He had failed her, rather dismally, but her fingers were gentle in his hair, not angry or pressuring, and Ren closed his eyes, exhaling slowly.

"Hey, pretty lady."

Her hands just lightly ran along his face, through his hair, cupping his cheeks as she bent to brush her lips against his cheek. "So you do remember this pretty lady, huh?" She teased softly, plopping down beside her boilfriend and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. Her eyes, however, were taking in his room. Or what was supposed to be a room.

Boils!

There were clothes... minipets... and things scattered all along the floor. Like Ren hadn't cared (which wouldn't have surprised her these days). It pained her to see the changes so starkly. But, Jackdamnit! She knew the Ren that had stolen her heart two years ago was still there. Just shadowed by... whatever was eating at him.

The she-wolf nuzzled against him, letting her eyes close for a moment and his scent to surround her. "Please tell me you have at least moved from this spot in the last few hours?" LW peeked at him, then sought out a certain minipet that would tell her straight up how terrible he'd been. "And that you've remembered to shower." Did her hand slide up to rub his ear? Why yes! Yes it did. "Kitten... "

She knew he probably had. Most likely on autopilot. But it was something mundane. Something that wouldn't trigger any anger, or make him shut her out partially.

He gave her a look that clearly indicated that yes, he did remember "this pretty lady" why in Jack's name wouldn't he but then leaned back, lifted an arm almost automatically, and set it about LW's waist, leaning his head against the top of hers. It felt...normal. Safe. Something that was simple and complete and whole.

"I've moved," said Ren, sounding a little cross, but he wasn't really. Not, at least, at LW, but at himself, and everything that he was currently failing at. LW's presence was both a help and a hindrance; he couldn't be certain what she was at the moment, because he both wanted her there and didn't want her there.

He hated himself for thinking the way he was.

A purr thrummed through him instinctively, one ear swiveling towards LW, and Ren sighed, lifting a hand to move hers away from his head. He kept their fingers intertwined, however, and he gave her what he hoped was an encouraging smile, though it was perhaps a little weary as well.

"I showered this morning," he told her, and kissed her forehead. "How are you?"

She just wrinkled her nose at him and tapped his nose before cuddling beside him. It felt good to feel his arm around her. Gave her some hope that he wasn't completely lost in the depths of his own mind. As long as she could bring him... some semblance of... peace, that was enough. It had to be. Because she would never give up on him. Ever.

Maybe if she was anyone else, the slight cross tone would have made her flinch. Would have shaken her confidence. But it didn't. Not really. LW knew it wasn't directed at her. True it still stung a little. But she was getting better at hiding it. Especially when she focused on simply being the support Ren needed more than anything. Even when he couldn't see it. So she rolled her eyes, fingers toying with his hair. "Moving from the pillows to the end of the bed doesn't count." She said dryly, lips quirking up.

I won't give up. Won't let you fall.

That smile that was only for him lit up her face as he purred, even though he snatched her hand. She squeezed his a little and leaned into his side after he kissed her. "Well enough." The she-wolf said truthfully, though she didn't dare go into any of the things bothering her.

That... pile of clothing was there last time she'd come up here. Her tail twitched. And... where was Rhys? Probably lost in the mess. This... wouldn't do! "And you? Are you doing alright?" She asked, just the barest hint of hesitancy in her voice.

Lying here with LW beside him almost made it easy to forget the world around him, to push away the feelings of darkness and despair and focus on something wholly good, something warm and peaceful and wonderful. LW was cathartic; a lovely reminder of everything that he wanted in this world.

But then the dream shattered, the pieces breaking around him, and he remembered how black it truly was, the stains of what he had done stuck permanently into his mind.

"...I got up to get a snack," Ren mumbled, turning so that his face pressed into the pillows. It sounded guilty, like admitting he had done something terrible. Which he had, but it had nothing to do with the empty bag of spookies on his bedside table.

"Are you doing all right?"

It was a question that was probably more complex than it was supposed to be. Was he all right? He was pretty sure he wasn't, but he couldn't tell LW that. Not when she was here, being the beautiful reminder of why he was doing what he was doing in the Lair Tasks, in spite of the fact that they were making him exhausted and he wasn't entirely comfortable with them. And what, exactly, defined "all right?"

"Better," said Ren. "now that you're here."
