IC Information
It's summer.

The weather is hot, dry, and the winds along the plains sometimes race along at unbearable speeds. The herds are moving from the steppes and plateaus to the open plains, and the Boneland lions are following.

This means two things:

1. The Firekin outpost is being left behind. It will now be a two to three day journey of intensive walking to reach the outpost. If you have friends there, best say goodbye. Training is on hold for those that have been practicing - better find a fellow Boneland's member to practice sparring with! Don't worry, they'll return again when the rains start.

2. Everyone is on high alert. We're entering territory which has not been fully established yet. There are bound to be rogues, agressive animals, unsafe waters, and other unknowns. This will be unfamiliar territory for cubs and new members. Best rely on your elders!

Quote:
They were starting to move slower now. The first two days had been rigorous. The pride had delayed as long as they could to let some of the younger cubs grow into their feet. It was easy to lose them in this heat.

As a result, the pride did most of their traveling at night. It was, in fact, almost easier to see in the darkness. Detail was lost, but shapes became easily apparent.

It was early in the morning now, but you wouldn't know it from the warm temperature of the air. The sky was just beginning to turn a soft pink along the mountains in the east. The quiet sounds of elephants and rummaging wildebeests echoed around the front of the group.

"Well," Matifa's soft voice broke the silence. "This might be as good as we get."

It wasn't an ideal location. They'd found themselves planted in front of a large, draining body of water. It had once been a large lake, and now it was rimmed with thick, sucking mud. There was no danger in sight yet, but the number of prey-beasts said this was a popular drinking spot. It was bound to be popular with the hippos and malicious crocodiles, too.

"We need to wait for the Abaholi, anyway," the paler lioness quickly interjected. She seemed to take no heed of the possible danger, scattering a herd of terrified antelope as she trudged her way to the receding shoreline.

"A smaller, pirvate water source would still be safer." Her voice called out to deaf ears. It worried her. Some of the cubs had fallen behind with their mothers, and so Gakere and Surtak had stayed behind to ensure they were protected. Kamal was always lazy, and that left only Sokoro as their championing male.

User ImageThis wasn't Buna's first migration, and she was glad to be moving again. One could get used to anything, but it was good to leave the Red-pelts behind. Matifa had a good point, but they needed to drink, and this was better than nothing.

"We need rest," Buna said, "And a muddy water source is better than none. Just make sure no youngsters decide to take a mud bath with a crocodile..."

Buna's definition of "youngster" was pretty much anyone younger and/or dumber than her. Ulaka might seem overconfident at times, but she was a good hunter and usually had enough self-preservation to stay safe. Buna wasn't too worried about her.

"If any cub tries to take a drink on their own they'll be in trouble..." she said and looked around to make sure the younger members of the group would stay in line.

Hadharani'chica lingered at the back of the group that was already at the water source. She was a bit tired after the rigorous journeying they had already done and was quite happy it was time to rest. Thirst was starting to get to her and as she watched the pale lioness head for the water Hadharani knew she wanted in on the action and the water.

She followed after the pale lioness more concerned for something to drink than any danger that could lurk in the water. She was a bit further from the water than the pale lioness though so she was still a good ways from the shore compared to the pale lioness.

While Mhisani was hanging back near the back, her reasons were different from Hadharani's. She wasn't tired, not yet - She'd traveled much farther than this from her birth pride, though it was a different time of year. The pale tan lioness stopped near the edge of the mud, blue eyes looking to and fro for the slightest movement. If there were any crocodiles or hippos... She wanted to know before she drank. After a moment, she looked to Matifa and the paler lioness for direction. "Is it safe? Should one of us adults get closer to make sure, to test it...?"

No members in the pride

Saudasubira like many other wandering rogues, was by herself right now, something that wasn't unusual for her. As of yet she hadn't met anyone to call a friend, or even an enemy, but that didn't stop her from continuing on. However, for some time she had been living around the same area, not moving much out of it unless it was to go scavenge for food. She was hungry today, and figured that she might check the nearest source of water for any easy prey that might be there.

However, as she made her way there, she could smell a good number of lions in the area. She had never encountered one of them before, only having seen them on a number of occasions. Should she continue? She could just as easily become their own prey, though she didn't remember any tales of lions eating hyenas. Ensuring herself that she could always just run, she continued on. Finally, she found them near the watering hole, and it was quite a sight! She had never seen so many in one place! Slowly making her way to the water, she noticed that no prey were here. With so many lions they had probably fled. She then heard the lionesses whispering about crocodiles and couldn't suppress a laugh. Getting a bit closer to them she said, "I haven't seen any crocodiles here yet myself, but that doesn't mean there aren't any lurking nearby. I haven't quite been here as long as the others, but I haven't seen any so far I mean". She didn't want to get on their bad-side, and she couldn't say for 100% sure that there were no predators such as those within the area. But she was often blunt and said what came to her, and it was true, she hadn't seen any from here time coming here.

Sanele had seen better days. The constant march, march, march was starting to weigh her down. She was more whiny than legitimately tired, but put up a good front. With her staunch silence and well-maintained place at the middle of the group, she gave off the impression these heinous conditions were easily tolerated. In truth, she just knew better than to go complaining out loud.

But her overjoyed reaction to the water was broadcast quickly and loudly. She ribbed the lioness next to her, happily declaring "Water!" and set off for the muddy bank. The opportunity to drink now was too good to pass up, and crocodiles --

Wait. Crocodiles?

Sanele backpedaled. Fast.

This place was going to get them all killed!

Kutoboa'Nadhari, who had approached the watering hole with the group led by Matifa and the paler lioness, had been hanging back away from the water's edge. Upon seeing it, she had determined quickly that there would almost certainly be crocodiles around. The large amount of prey-beasts and the cool water were perfect conditions for the reptilian brutes. The wide ring of sticky mud around the lake would make the lionesses incapable of swift movement should they be attacked, which made taking a drink a risky situation. But they all needed to drink. She had started to pad slowly toward the water when she caught sight of a hyena.

At first, she hadn't thought anything of it. She had seen hyenas before, thought she had never met one, and assumed it was just looking for a carcass to scavenge from. But then it spoke to them. Hari didn't know what to do with it's news that there were no crocodiles in the lake; she wanted to believe it, but could this creature be trusted?

"I'm not sure," Matifa's voice trailed off as she answered Mhisani. The brown lioness had paused just before her toes had touched the mud.

"That hyena seems to think so." Matifa moved her head over to where the scavenger had joined them. She was brave; they could easily decide one hyena was there for a spot of fun. She'd chased them before, when she was bored. But there was no game to steal, and for now there was no reason to start a quarrel.

Ulaka, however, had other ideas. "Well, this water is bound to have crocodiles in it now! Everyone knows hyenas lie through their teeth!" Ulaka, now ankle-deep in mud, shot a look over her shoulder to everyone.

As if to enhance the truth of her statement, a large rock went sailing through the air and landed dangerously close to the hyena. It had been tossed by a hairy, male baboon with brows for eyes which were currently focused into a scowl.

"Hah!" Ulaka took it as a sign to move forwards and was hit square in the nose. She let out a shriek and sat down in the mud, frantically rubbing her now bruised muzzle. The assaulter was a smaller female primate, her tail up and her mouth baring fangs.

It seemed that was the only warning they were getting! For, standing by the water was a whole pack of babboons and they were warming up to launch a full-frontal assault of stones.

[edit: whoops sorry, I didn't see the post until it was too late D: *fails* ]

Whilst many of the lionesses here had done this migration before, Ainra and the Firekin ambassador Su had not. They were recent joiners in the grand scheme of things and were still trying to find their paws. Nevertheless, the small tan ex-rogue was certainly the more nervous of the pair. She'd never been the adventurous sort, even after spending so long out in unclaimed territory. She was a family girl who liked to be in a safe, happy environment and this unknown had her shaken.

As such, Ainra meandered across to where Hadharani'chica lingered and briefly rubbed shoulders with the other female. "A c-crocodile? They could harm adults as well as cubs!" She wasn't sure she was thirsty enough to get that close...not yet, anyway. Perhaps a better spot was only a little further away?

"A smaller source would be better." Su piped up. "But beggars can't be choosers. We're more likely to die from dehydration than a crocodile attack." Even still, the Firekin female did seem hesitant to step closer. She'd never been as brawny as the usual stereotype of her kin. Close at her side, her amber-coloured snake flicked her tongue and then lifted her head, startled and hissing.

Primates!

Su gave a wide-eyed start. Coming from an isolated pride far out in the desert she had never seen their like before. They were rather frightening looking, too.

Her snake practically dived beneath her forelegs to shelter but Su did nothing but stand her ground and--close her eyes--hoping that she didn't get hit. Luckily, it seemed standing still had worked--for her, at least.

Sauda growled a bit at the insuinuation. She knew how her species was looked at but that didn't mean they were all like that! "Hey, why would I do something like that? I don't even like pranks!" She said, trying to defend herself. She yelped when a rock landed near her, stunned, it took her a moment to find that a baboon had thrown it. "Why that stinky little..." She would have gone to attack it, but it seemed as though more rocks were coming this way.

She had never seen this many, or even any near this watering hole. Perhaps they were trying to claim it as their own? Or maybe she had always just managed to miss them when she was here. She backed up more towards the lionesses, certainly trusting them than the baboons.

Young Kayin had decided halfway through the night's travels that he didn't want to lag behind the main group waiting for the rest of the cubs, whether or not they were his siblings, and that he was plenty quick enough to keep up with the rest of the adults up front. Or at least... in the main pack. He had to distinguish himself somehow, so he had told his mother he was moving ahead and plowed on up to catch up with some of the lionesses ahead.

He was still possessed of something of a one-track mind, however, so he knew the minute he'd begun to move which lioness exactly he wanted to find. Kayin had set his sights of Orabela when the lioness had been an adolescent (and wholly unwilling to babysit the cub), and little had changed since then except that Ora had grown a little bit and was now considered a "real" adult. That fact had done little to deter him, though, and he easily picked her small frame out of the pack of traveling lions.

-
"Kayin..."

The cub had hung around Ora long enough for the young lioness to know what he was like - namely, stubborn to a fault and unlikely to leave her in peace once he had found her. It had also been long enough that Ora had managed to grow accustomed to his presence, however, and he seemed by now more like a little brother who wouldn't stop tagging along after her than any real sort of nuisance. She had even almost come to miss his wise-guy comments when he wasn't around.

"You should be with your mother." She would have mentioned that the migration was hard enough without his mother having to worry about where he was all the time, but at this point, Ora figured that Dina probably had a good idea of where her son went every time he disappeared. When Kayin wasn't with his family, nine times out of ten saw him trailing along after Ora. "There aren't any cubs up here anyway. You're going to get bored."

But Kayin didn't seem to care, and just as Ora had suspected, he trailed along after her for the rest of the night, though at times, he fell into such a deep silence that she could tell he was fighting the sleep that threatened to overtake him.

-
By the time the group reached the water hole, Kayin had been stumbling groggily along in the space between Ora's front paws for hours, not noticing a thing about the landscape they had passed by in the night. Sleepy as he was, though, the water - and the mud - were enough to invigorate his young heart all over again, and he all but bounded out of the safe space under his friend.

"Well, I want to go in!" He declared loudly. "If there's crocodiles, they'll take one look at me and hide underwater." It almost sounded like a promise. But before he could wade on in and prove himself right, a rock sailed past to slosh into the mud at his paws, and the cub leaped back in surprise, diving for cover between Ora's paws.
