So as we all know, cats shed. Some more than others, some you barely notice it until it's accumulated considerably or it just sticks to certain fabrics. In my house, I find it's the cat trees (they have that plush carpet stuff for covering) and the living room drapes, because she likes to sit in the window and I'm too lazy to open them on a regular basis anymore.

Now the trees, I don't mind if they're all hairy - they're her space, it's not a big bother to me, her hair kind of blends in.
The drapes, though, are a white, heavy cotton, and the black/grey of her fur kind of stands out. They came with the house, I just haven't switched them out yet, though it is something I'd like to do (I'm not much of a fan of white and they just don't go with my house/are kind of ugly). My question is, does anybody know of a fabric type that's better at repelling the hair a bit? I haven't settled on a colour, but it'll either be dark (forest green) or dark and bright 'striped' (two or three tones, those thick 'stripes' near the bottom - pinks most likely)

As I've mentioned in other threads and such before, I've found rubber brushes like the FURemover to be awesome for cleaning the tree (and carpets) of hair - works well on the curtains, too, is just a pain.

I just googled it and there isnt anything. Hmmm. Thats a good question. I have the same problem with Freyja. What about a vinyl cloth? Not like plastic, but stiffer, thicker fabric? Felt is out, cotton is out, normal run of the mill polyester is out.

How about the stuff that raincoats are made out of? D: Im gonna look into that FURemover thing. It takes cat hair out of clothes too? She has a fondness for laying upon my work clothes and that cant happen because I work in food service.

That's what I was afraid of. I'm thinking rain coat material and such just wouldn't look right. I'll just have to try to remember to clean them more regularly.
I imagine it would work on clothes, I haven't really tried, but at least to get the worst of the hair out and then using a lint roller for the smaller particles after (because otherwise you have to use like two sheets of lint roller to get all the hair, in my experience)

Hmmm. What about a thicker vinyl? Could you make your own curtians? I had to take my curtians down because Freyja liked to rip them down.

Does Saph have a thick coat? Freyja has the triple coat of a Coon and her hair ranges from the short stuff to the long think ginger. D: Its over everything no matter how much I brush her.

I could make my own, it's just easier to buy (I'm terrible at cutting/sewing straight). I did make the one in my room, and just checked and it seems to be pretty good about not holding onto a ton of hair (Saph doesn't spend as much time in that window, but she does look out it a couple times a day at least) - it's sort of like a tighter weave of the material used for cross-stitching.
She is fairly thick-coated, but doesn't seem to shed too much. The past month is the most she's really shed, but it has switched from summer to winter, very little autumn, outside.

I would go to a fabric store and see if you can get samples of various fabric. Tell them what its for and then when you get home, rub Saph with them to see which one holds the least hair. Then, when you know which one, itll make buying it a little easier.

Id perform the experiment but my gma only had cotton fabric. D: She doesnt sew with vinyl very often.

All Freyja has to do is lay down and theres fur clumps. stare Todays a brushing day and Im gonna see if I can get her to sit still long enough.

I don't know how helpful this is, but is there any fabric already in your house that seems to hold the fur less? Bedding or clothes or whatever? Because you could check the tag and see what it's made from, which might send you in the right direction.

I know that I had an awesome doona cover once that attracted cat hair like a vacuum, so I ended up disposing of it. But then some of the bedding doesn't seem to attract it so much.

Also, I used to have light pink curtains and a black cat. They had permanent black patches, because I was just too lazy about it. smile

The curtain in my bedroom (not entirely sure what it the fabric is) doesn't seem horribly hair-covered, but she also doesn't sit in that window as much.
The only other fabrics she really has general contact with are fleece and denim, neither of which I really want to use for curtains.

It's definitely not a major deal, and I think I'm pretty much sold on finding something pink for the curtains now that I've actually considered the possibility.
Besides, nobody should ever really be noticing it anyhow - the hair's mostly on the window side of the curtains, not much of an issue on the room side (hence why they don't get cleaned much to begin with), and the front window's at the front centre of the house - if you're close enough to see the hair on the curtains, you're ******** tresspassing on my property (I never have company, and if I did, why would they be in the barren wasteland that is the front yard?), which means I don't like you, therefore your opinion of my housekeeping cares doesn't matter to me.

Touché!

In that case, go with what you want and good luck to you! I hope it looks awesome when your curtains are all sorted. xd

there is no escape from the fur. you could always make curtains out of cat fur so all the shed fur will blend right in lol

If you want, I can rub my massive collection of various fabric on my cats, come back with the results? I know that cat fur and fabric hasn't made a nice deal to stay away thus far on all of my projects. D: But I primarily work with fleece, felt, and cotton. I also have various other fabric kinds, some of which I have made in to smaller curtains before. Just they never touched them so I don't know how well it does or doesn't work.

I like this idea. theres a local groomer in my area who actually SAVES the hair from the grooming session and makes little arts and crafts out of the animal hair to give to the owners.

"Why yes, nice cashier/waitress lady, my wallet is made from 100% cat hair. You like it? Its all natural!" lol

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not too concerned.

-I have little to no intention of making curtains for the window-of-issue, even if it would possibly be a cheaper route; they're just way too big for me to be interested in doing such-

This is a long shot, but easy. Try rubbing a fabric softener sheet on them. I know they work really well to repel dust, something about the static. It works awesome on repelling dust on things like fans and baseboards. Maybe it'll work with cat hair, too.

If the ones I have didn't leave such an icky feeling on stuff, I would (and they probably would help). I'm not buying more until I use these up, though (which should be pretty much forever from now, because I rarely use them).
Do you know of any brands that work really well (in general)? I'm not much a fan of Bounce - I find the smell of them (even with the unscented) rather nauseating.
