Basic Information

When dragon, wher, and firelizard females come into heat and are ready to mate, their hides will seem to glow or be extra glossy and vibrant, and sometimes they are known to become temperamental or "proddy." These things can signal to a rider, handler, or owner (as well as others of the female's species) that this female will soon be ready to mate.

When that glorious day comes, the female will take flight and any and all interested males will offer pursuit. The male who catches her will be the one to mate with her. Human bondmates share in this intensely sexual experience, feeling the same heightened sensitivity and urgency as their bonds. As a result, mating flights are almost always followed by a roll in the furs for the human bonds of the creatures who just flew. Sometimes surrogate humans are brought in if the rising female's human bond does not wish to end up sleeping with some random guy, for whatever reason. Locking oneself in a closet or something is also an option for those who are unready or unwilling to have sex with the nearest person. Incidentally, everyone whose bond did not catch the rising female is probably going to be incredibly frustrated.

The egg-laying outcomes of mating flights vary. With egg-laying females, the duration of the flight, the feelings of the female for the male who caught her, the feelings of the female's bondmate for the bondmate of the winning male, and a host of other factors are said to influence the size and quality of the resultant clutch. So an unenthusiastic human bond can actually be detrimental to a dragon's clutch size.

Another factor is the color of the participating creatures. Golds can lay eggs of any color, but are less likely to produce golds or bronzes if they are flown by a brown or blue. Egg-laying greens never produce golds and are unlikely to produce bronzes even if they are flown by a bronze.

How This Works

In this shop, for shop-run mating flights, there is a procedure that is completely optional for everyone else. But in shop run flights it goes like this.

1. Post in this thread that a female is getting ready to mate.
2. Post a sign-up thread in the plotting subforum.
3. Leave sign-ups open for X days, during which time all interested males can sign up to participate. If you don't sign up, you can still take part, but you will not capture the female.
4. Create a thread for the flight to take place in. This should include the characters taking part, any rules that might be involved, et cetera.
5. RP the flight or just go by the numbers until there is a winner.
6. If it is a breedable pair, consult breedings post to see if there are open slots and apply if you like.

You'll notice that there are rules mentioned above but not defined. Some of what follows will be suggestions for ways to run flights, others will be optional modifications and adjustments to make the flights more interesting. Multiple modifiers can, of course, be added to a scheme

Suggested Schema
1. Pick a number and have each pursuer roll XdX with each post they make and the first pursuer to reach that number wins.
2. Female rolls XdX and then pursuers roll the same XdX. Pursuers rolling higher than the female or the same as the female move on to the next round. Continue until there is one pursuer remaining or, if no one rolls high enough either re-roll or call it an NPC win.
3. Rolling XdX or the RNG pick a number and have each pursuer roll the same number. The closest roll wins and the rest of the RP is just posting to that eventual conclusion.

Suggested Modifiers/Handicaps
1. Color handicaps: bronzes' rolls remain unchanged, browns' rolls are -1, blues' are -2.
2. RP bonuses: for RPs between the pursuer and the pursued that end happily a pursuer gets +1, for RPs between them that end unhappily a pursuer gets -1.
3. Stat considerations (DEX/CON): Average (10-13) receive neither handicap nor bonus, Below Average (7-9) receive -1, Very Low (0-6) receive -2, Above Average (14-17) receive +1, Very High (18+) receive +2.
4. Stat considerations (DEX/CON/INT): pursuers scoring higher in a category than the female receive +1 for each category he out-scores her, those scoring lower receive -1 for each category she out-scores him.

Other
To prevent RPs from stalling, it is suggested that a time limit is placed on replies, and any pursuer not replying within that limit is considered to have lost. Similarly, if the female does not post within that limit, the pursuer who is closest to winning becomes the winner. This limit should be stated as part of the rules.

On a related note, if playing for points there should be a final point cap so that RPs do not drag on forever and ever (unless, of course, you want that). This capping number should also be stated in the first post as part of the rules.
