Ava detested rainy days. The clouds had no sympathy for her and her hunting schedule. She had never gone without water to appreciate it as much she should, but she had gone hungry enough to gripe about the impaired conditions the weather wrought on her attempts to score a meal. She didn't know for sure if it was a specific after-effect of the storm. Was it the chilly air? The moisture on the grass? To her, it didn't matter. The point was it heightened the senses of her and the herd of zebra she'd been stalking.
Ava didn't much like her sisters either. Roka had told her she was "of strident tone" when she'd last seen her. When Ava learned that was a pompous way of saying her voice was screechy (which it was when she got angry -- but not the point!), they'd argued and hadn't made plans to meet up again any time soon. Not for all the zebras in the Savannah would Ava admit she had learned one good thing from her sibling: If at first you don't succeed, try and try again -- but try a different method each time.
Ava tried upwind, downwind; North, East, South, and West. She pursued her dinner until the hunger wasn't worth the exhaustion anymore. The thunder sounded like cackling to her, and the rain she imagined were tears of laughter. Another downpour drove her into the nearest cave where she could pout by her lonesome.
She stretched out near the entry, watching drop after drop fall from the sky.

Chilali had never minded the rain, as it was usually rather refreshing to a leopard like her. Although, she did and didn't mind the smells that would crop up during rainfall. Sometimes, it would distract her from her hunts. Or just..distract her in general. For a day like today, it hadn't deterred her from a successful hunt. It was only successful, however, because the antelope slipped while trying to run away from the leopardess. Not that the silver eyed feline was complaining, of course. She'd scored a meal, and was in the process of dragging it to the nearest moderate tree. If there was one that that Chilali had learned, was that during rainfall, it mucked with others' noses, too. So, she could be a little more lax in stride, then her usual panic.
Of course, who needed their nose, if they caught sight of a leopard and her meal?

Leopards were a lot like elephants to Ava. She couldn't hunt them and rarely had reason to speak to one. They were just there, part of the backdrop. No strong opinion one way or the other. She knew as much about them as elephants too, which was to say the bare minimum. They ate in trees, yes, but the air and rain was getting colder. Who liked to dine in these abysmal conditions?
Her good intentions could be easily misconstrued as trickery, but better to speak up and be thought a fool than keep quiet and... anything. Keeping quiet was the reason there were so many problems in the world. If more lions -- or leopards -- spoke up and helped one another, things would go swimmingly.
"Excuse me!" Ava called. "You can eat that in here if you want. I won't take it from you."

Black ears perked up at the sound of someone yelling at her, though it was hard to register at first. Chilali turned her head and looked around, to see if she could catch a glimpse at whomever spoke or.. if she was just hearing things. The rain could do that sometimes. But today wasn't such time, as silver eyes caught sight of a lioness, camping out in a cave. The leopardess had a healthy wariness of lions, as some had proven to be rather sneaky. This lionesss, while seeming to have a nice offer, could very well just steal her hard won food! However, it wasn't that fair to just the majority on the actions of a few bad apples. After all, there were plenty of sneaky individuals of her own species. Chilali sighed and got a good grip on her meal, as she trudged over to the shelter that the lioness was in.
Once inside, the monochromatic leopardess made herself comfy, giving the other some space. Nothing ruder than crowding someone. Then again, her eating a meal infront of another could also be considered rude.
" Thank you for the offer of sharing your den with me. "

Ava wasn't the sort to fish for credit when she was only doing the right thing and being courtesy. This especially didn't warrant it. "It's no problem," she assured the stranger. "It's not my den. I found it. I thought someone might live here, but no one has come by."
If there wasn't anyone claiming it as theirs during rainfall, chances were it was vacant. She might stay for a while before she moved on, come to think of it.
Ava settled against the wall this time. She didn't eye the kill, more concerned with her own actions coming off as rude than those of the leopard. Which was a shame, since she was terribly curious how she managed to take down such a nice meal in this weather.
"I'm Ava, by the way."

Chilali was a tad surprised when she'd heard that the den hadn't belonged to the lioness. Glancing around, it was a shame that there wasn't a permanent occupant for the den. Well, technically, there were two at the moment, but mostly from the rain. Even still though, this was a rather nice den, as far as dens went. Roomy enough for two grown adults and a sizeable den. Not bad at all. " Ah, I see. Regardless, it would seen to have brought luck for the both of us. " The leopardess relaxed a little more, as the minutes went by. It truly didn't seem like the lioness wanted any of her kill. What nice luck! " Chilali. Nice to meet you, Ava. "

Had Chilali arrived alone, without a meal, Ava could have comfortably kept quiet and waited for the rain to pass. It wasn't that she abhorred small talk, she was just bad at it. The plus one carcass made silence feel more tense than floundering for discussion did.
There were plenty of things to chat with a leopard about other than their hunting.
"How are the leopards doing lately?" Ava asked, well-meaning but certainly more awkward than she'd intended. "I don't talk to too many of you. I guess because you're always in the trees. I'm a bad climber."

Chilali blinked a moment at her the lionesses question. It wasn't that she was insulted by it, which would be nonsensical. But it was just the way that Ava had worded the statement, that made it sound a tad odd. She couldn't really speak for others, but personally, Chilali was doing alright. Perhaps others were too, but leopards weren't usually too terribly talkative to each other to share information on a day to day basis. The added statement that Ava didn't often speak to leopards told her quite a bit. Her question was a product of well meaning awkwardness. " We're doing alright, I would think. "

Ava wrinkled her nose and smiled a little. She couldn't explain why she felt more at ease around a leopard than a lion, but maybe it had something to do with her answer. Chilali made it sound like they didn't talk often. Maybe they didn't. Maybe they didn't really speak to anyone that often. If she fumbled in her conversation with a lion she risked being the subject of gossip, no doubt.
"Sorry," Ava tried. She sounded amused by her own dense question. "I guess the leopards don't talk as much as the lions. They're always in each others business. What's a good question to ask a leopard?"

" Well, perhaps some are talkative. I can't really speak for all of us. "
Ava was quite the amusing lioness, that much was certain. Not that it was meant in a bad way. By no means was the leopardess making fun her leonine company. That would be rude, and Chilali was only rude to those that were crude to her first. It was just the well meaning but awkwardly worded conversation. Not in any of her days had she ever heard someone speak this way. It was interesting and fun, at the same time.
" Hmm.. " Chilali said thoughtfully, as she tilted her monochromatic head head shifted her silver eyes. " How about.. ' How do you catch food in the rain? ' "

Ava tried and succeeded in not laughing, but she couldn't halt the almost child-like grin that spread across her face. It was comical to avoid a subject the entire time only for her to bring it up.
Frankly, Ava could stand to ask any predator how they hunted in the rain. But just maybe the leopards knew a secret the lions didn't.
"Okay," she said. "How do you hunt in the rain?"
