Woe to the lone rogue reared in the company of birds. Kitwana's mother had never expressly forbid him from gorging on avian cuisine; in fact, she had stared at him long and hard when he asked, then changed the subject -- and left him uncertain to this day whether she considered it a legitimate question and couldn't manage an answer she felt acceptable, or if she worried her boy was stupid and didn't want to encourage said stupidity.

So, in theory, mother having a bird shouldn't hinder him from eating other birds. But. Kitwana couldn't bring himself to kill a species that had given him so much. Mother's feathery friend had helped her hunt, avoid dangers, and kept her centered when she got impatient with her boys. It would be downright weird to chomp on one.

Kitwana was damned to hunt for bigger game out here in the plains. Time and time again, he failed. Once, he'd almost snagged a zebra. Another time he had managed to pin an antelope, but the thing kicked and squealed and escaped.

He tried continuously throughout the night, but morning was coming, and in the sun his odds were drastically diminished. The black in his coat didn't hide him as well with the light gleaming on his already shiny markings.

Kitwana was about ready to call it a day (ha) when he got whiff of something predator rather than prey. He hurried toward it, hopeful this stranger -- these strangers? -- would be willing to form some kind of pact to take down a hardy breakfast.

Juu was on guard. Always on guard. He didn't trust most rogues, didn't trust their ways, didn't trust their lack of ethics...After all, it was because of rogues that the pride had faltered, and now...was nonexistent. The Mzawa had died again...and he felt that there would be no bringing it back this time. The thought brought him sorrow, but the sound of his daughter's pawsteps brought him forward again. Nchi'binti raised a brow at her father, standing from the slinking position she'd had close to the ground.

"There's no time to get lost in the past, Father. I found a kill too large to take down myself. It will feed all of us and thensome, though." Juu nodded, his scarred form following his daughter to the prey she'd located. He'd had to brush up rusty hunting skills from his rite of passage days when he and what remained of his family took to the rogue lands, but he was better suited to helping Nchi hunt. When she needed it, anyways.

He motioned for her to stop after a few moments, though. There wasn't just the smell of prey around. There was also the smell of predator. Narrowing his eyes, he motioned for her to stay down in the grasses, his own form slinking towards the scent. What company had found them this time?

Kitwana surmised his five senses were five times less useful than your typical lion, so hunting didn't come easy to him. He hoped that it wasn't in the interest of sharpening a sixth one yet to trigger, but instead testament to how he'd gotten the short end of the lesson stick. Mommy dearest had that second sight and he wasn't enlightened enough on the subject of seers to know that didn't warrant both her boys being cursed with it.

Nothing short of a miracle Kitwana managed to elude inheriting her powers and paranoia. Don't Talk to Strangers was more of a warning than advice where Mto was concerned. If they did, they best hope they were killed or whisked away by a cubnapper. They weren't allowed to have rogue friends. No rogue conversations. She and Juu could have spent many an hour suspiciously staring at one another.

"My name is Kitwana," he started. For the time being his audience consisted of grass, the bugs crawling on it, and a couple of birds staring at him from the lone tree on the horizon. There was a lion around here somewhere, and now they knew his name. "I was wondering if you'd like to help me with that unusually large zebra crammed in the middle of the herd over yonder. I don't eat much."
