Not having Jinhai was killing him.

There were times, following the whirlwind events of the Haunted House, that Gale found himself thinking of Bix, thinking of Ceres, wondering if she was taking care of him.

It was a stupid thought. Of course she was. If anything, the one thing that was not completely horrible, awful, numbing, and painful, was the thought that at, at the very least, Bix was not alone.

He did not leave his house often, but now he sat on the training fields, his legs drawn up to his chest, arms wrapped around his knees as he stared blankly out at nothing. Jinhai's tablet rested in his lap, an eternal reminder that he, Gale, was now on his own for the first time in a very long time.

He felt so very small.

HI I HOPE IT'S OK THAT I STARTED THIS >_>

Sitting around and waiting wasn't one of his strong points, so he decided that some training would probably help get his mind off matters.

Leaving the tablet on his table, he gave another empty look around his room before putting on his hunter coat again, and walked out the door.

Why... was he even a hunter? He couldn't remember what he was fighting for anymore. To protect loved ones? To save mankind? No, it wasn't any of those.
For... a promise? Was an empty promise really enough to keep him going?
He didn't know anymore.

The walk down to the training grounds felt like the longest ever as it only gave him time to reflect on his life, his decisions. Something he didn't want to do. Not right now. Not anymore. He only stuffed his hands into his pocket as he continued to walk, wondering what he could do once he reached the training grounds. He just wanted to lash out at something, ANYTHING. To get rid of the feeling that he was utterly useless.

Upon reaching the training grounds, he looked up to see... someone already there. Except instead of training, they were sitting there, moping. This was the last thing he wanted to see. MORE mopey people.

He walked up to the hunter, lifting one foot and planted it on the back of the hunter's head.

"If you're only here to mope, go somewhere else."
He was sick and tired of this.

At only five foot five and sixteen (well, almost seventeen in a month or so), Gale Gentry was hardly intimidating. Having a sniper rifle the length of his entire body and then some had helped him feel confident, had helped him feel as though he were capable of doing what he had come here to do. Jinhai had teased him, but he had always been there.

And now he wasn't.

Snapped out of his thoughts abruptly - and rudely - but the precense of a foot on the back of his head, Gale stiffened automatically, wondering who on earth would have dared to do such a thing. Those who knew him knew of his rank, but they also knew of his irritation at being treated like he was less of a person than he was.

Bix had never once treated him any differently.

Gale lifted a hand, wrapped a hand around the intruder's ankle, and yanked as hard as he could, dragging the person around so that he could see who it was.

"Don't," he said, and his voice was like ice. "touch me again."

IT IS OK I LIKE JAKE <33

Completely caught off guard by the pull, Jake fell, barely pulling his hands out of his pockets in time to stop his face from hitting the ground. He managed to land on his arm and side instead, but unfortunately, that arm was connected to his injured shoulder.

The impact caused him immense pain, and he cursed as he grabbed at it, feeling blood starting to soak through the newly-bandaged wound. Damn this kid. If Chester were there, he would of chided him for being so rude... or actually warned him not to do something like this in the first place, though he probably wouldn't of listened anyways.

He glared at the hunter, still clutching his shoulder.

"If you want a fight, all you had to do was ask."

The look he was getting from this trainee was a mutinous one, but Gale did not care. In fact, he did not care about anything at all right now except finding a way to turn back time and force Bix not to go on that damned mission.

There was nothing he could do.

"I don't want a fight," said Gale, but this was mostly untrue, because as he thought about it, letting out some steam by knocking this one into oblivion was seeming more appealing by the second. Whether or not he had the strength to do so at the moment was another story entirely.

His eyes flickered towards the trainee, who he vaguely recognized.

"Death Division, are you. Well, welcome to the club, our leader's dead - though I doubt he's really dead, because Caelius is like a bloody cockroach. He never dies."

He saw through that lie, hunter. You're just ITCHING for a fight, aren't you? Regardless of whether he wanted one or not, Jake was going to goad him on until he got one.

To be honest, he himself needed to let off steam too. He hated sitting around doing nothing, just waiting for orders on what to do next, feeling useless. At least you wouldn't catch HIM sitting around and moping. Hell no (the trip back didn't count ok). And hitting stationary targets sounded kinda boring. No, he needed something he could hit, and would hit back. It sounded like a strange way to relieve stress, but that was always how he dealt with stuff. By fighting.

Oh? This kid was a deathie too? It was evident he hadn't been really attentive to the symbols on the coats... nor really cared. That was something Chester would usually point out to him... if he was still around.

"Really now?"

He too had seen the mangled body, and had really thought that he was done for. Guess he should of thought higher of his division leader. A smirk crossed his face.

"Good to see it's only the useless hunters biting the dust then."

He had been planning on just ignoring the kid, keeping his attention elsewhere, the sneer on the young man's face was usually enough to grate on Gale's nerves. This time, however, he was tired. He was too tired and too much in pain for this, turning his face back to stare blankly at the training dummies.

"Good to see it's only the useless hunters biting the dust then."

Something snapped inside of Gale, something hot and harsh and angry and without pausing to think that getting into a fight with someone older and taller than he was was probably a bad idea, Gale was on his feet.

Slam.

His fist hit the kid's stomach without warning, Gale giving a snarl like an angry cat.

"Don't," he hissed, fury lacing every word. "ever say that again."

He was a LITTLE more prepared this time, but still. A fist to the stomach. People were targeting ALL his weak points today.

A hiss escaped his lips as he doubled over, coughing. He managed to stay on his feet though, and reached a hand out, grabbing at the boy's hair, yanking him closer.

"My my, did I say something wrong? You know it's TRUE. Why else do you think our leader told us to kill them off? Only the weak truly succumb to Insanity."

He felt fingers in his hair, yanking his head back, but Gale ducked down, twisted, and kneed the other in the groin as hard as he could, shoving the other away from him and staggering backwards several steps, breathing heavily. His mind felt oddly blank, devoid of anything else other than a white hot rage that had settled into his bones, his body, his heart.

"Or maybe you're just stupid."

Now that was just a low blow.

Normally, the height difference should of given him an advantage, but not when his opponent was kneeing him in the groin.
Taking the pain like a man, he grit his teeth, determined not to let this brat show him up.

He stepped forward again, this time, grabbing the boy's scarf, pulling down. hard.

"Oh, really? At least I'm not the one crying over every freaking dead body. I may be new, but even I knew what to expect when I signed up for this. Do you?"

Gale gave a small gasp, his airway suddenly constricted by the tightening of the scarf around his neck. He fell to the ground, winded, but rolled over and got back to his feet instantly, unperturbed, filled with a desire to see the end of this fight in victory. He reared up, and slammed his foot into the other's stomach, then fell back, chest heaving for breath, his cheeks coloring.

He could hear Bix's voice in his head, and the ache in his heart:

"You proved yourself. Just getting here means you are worthy.

"You've got resolve and discipline and strength that a lot of us don't have. I could have never made the choice to come here at your age. You have promise."

"I do," said Gale, and drew his fist back. "My name is Gale Gentry, and I am a Death Division Hunter. Got that, trainee?"

Then he punched him in the face.

AND BEYOND

With the constant attacks on his stomach, his wound finally re-opened.
Jake scoffed and ripped off the bloody bandages, tossing them to a side.

He reeled back when Gale punched him, and used his ungloved hand to wipe away the blood now dribbling from his nose.
This was more like it. He'd take on angry blondie over mopey kid any day, not to mention the fighting helped take his own mind off matters.

"Jake Cross. Death Division. The trainee who managed to knock some sense into a Hunter."

He grinned, made a fist, and punched Gale back.

Except Jake's punch never reached its target, because Gale, being a good half a head shorter than him, ducked out of the way of his swing, twisted, and threw himself forward, slamming his shoulder into the trainee's stomach to propel him backwards.

Then he straightened, pushed back his hair, and glowered down at him.

"I wouldn't be too sure of that," said Gale. "Try hitting me again, and l'll have you reported."

His head hurt - not to mention his heart. Gale looked over at Jake, the anger dissipating, the only emotions left an awful, raw longing for something he could no longer have.

"I'm sorry your first mission ended this way."

The impact sent him staggering a few steps back, but he managed to stay on his feet.
At this rate, he was going to need to get patched up again, but he didn't really care. It wasn't really like he did a good job bandaging in the first place.

At Gale's warning, he only laughed.

"To who? Even if our leader IS alive, he's currently MIA at the moment. Gonna tattle on a trainee picking on a kid hunter?"

He snickered at the thought, but made no further attempt to lash out at him. In his eyes, he had already accomplished what he wanted to do.

Sure, he was probably no match for someone who had been here much longer than him, despite being younger AND shorter. If the battle dragged out, he would probably only ensure his own defeat... and get sent to the infirmary, something he didn't really want to do at the moment.

Gale's sympathy was only met with a shrug.

"You fight, people die. It only depends on who."

"No," said Gale, and his tone was neither angry, nor demeaning, but serious, his gaze leveling with Jake's. "I don't tattle, I'm not a kid, and you're just a trainee. I have no desire to pretend you're important, because you're not, not really. Not to me. You're expendable."

He didn't know where the words were coming from, but they were there, and they were true. He was not sympathetic, he was not furious anymore.

All he was was numb.

"Don't get too comfortable around here, then," said Gale quietly, and turned his back on Jake, sliding his hands into his pockets.

"If all people do is die, then I wouldn't plan on staying here for very long - not with that attitude. Among us, those who haven't learned their place are the first ones to go."
