Calder had a textbook in hand and was walking to the greenhouse, looking a bit worn but no worse from the current wear of recent events. Everyone he knew had been accounted for and were resting either with someone or someplace Calder knew. Mind slightly more calmed, he set on another task he had on mind, and moved the glass door to the greenhouse before entering in. The warm heat made him think of swampy marshes, and he breathed in the smell of heavy air thick with moisture, exposed earth, and all manner of plants.

Wiping a bit of drool from his lips, he forced some self control as he started to look around, meandering slowly down the path. Since he didn't have to be quiet, he just move naturally, allowing his hooves to strike the cobbled path as he searched.

Malodore was busy in the greenhouse, in the area Cricket had set aside for them; its sleeves were pulled back, leaving its forearms exposed up to the elbow, gleaming metal marred somewhat by mud and dirt. But its little patch was doing quite nicely, and the plants hadn't gotten too out of control during its absence.

The sound of hooves, though, drew its attention, and it tilted its head to one side in momentary confusion. "Hello?" it called out, curious what other hooved creature might be within the greenhouse.

The sound of hooves stopped before a voice called out. "Mal?"

The hoof-falls picked up and after a bit of circling around a rather large bush with curling vines that leaned towards him when he got close, Calder appeared on a smaller side path that lead up to where Malodore was working. It was a side area reserved for what Calder assumed were the employed and medics of the school, and he felt awkward being in here. It had the air that he needed permission, and yet here was Malodore looking delightfully dirty.

"What are you doing here?" The kelpie glanced to Mal's arms and was surprised to see even that much shown.

"Calder!" Malodore looked surprised, though not displeased. "I had not thought to see you here - you seem more accustomed to the wilds than this tamed place."

Tame other than Steve of course. Wherever Steve was.

"And these are my little harbingers of health," it added, leaning down to coo over its plants. They had healthy growth now, and it had been gently settling fertilizer against the roots and trimming dead leaves from each sprig. "An assignment from Nurse Cricket. Each of these have medicinal properties, though I am not sure if your clan uses them in such things. They are not bog-plants, I do not think, or not all of them at least."

"I didn't expect to see you here. I thought you'd be...well, with Riley." He moved over slowly, not sure if the harbingers were the type to reach out and with hair as long as he had now, it wasn't good to be close to clingy plants. They seemed plant and inanimate enough, and he regarded them with the same interest he had much plants, wondering if they were edible, tasty, and vaguely what they could do. "I still like learning about other plants. Didn't know you had a little garden here. I have one too but...well, not like this." He regarded the plants and Malodore's work with respect as it was sure it had been given some sort of privileged to work at the school's greenhouse. His was out in the woods and was only good for tea and food - mainly carrots.

"I am actually interested in some mainland plants." Namely one in specific as he brought the book out and opened it up to a loose piece of paper with a colored drawing of a black plant on it. "Have you seen anything like this in here?"

"I have been with her, but we have our own lives as well - I do not see Barth here, either," it said, sounding amused. "And such medicines are not my forte, as you know, so I can understand why Nurse Cricket would want to assign such to me. A true doctor must be balanced in knowledge and discipline." It skimmed one hand lightly over the tops of the plants, the leaves bending gently then springing back into place.

It peered more closely at the drawing. "Ah, no, I have not - perhaps Cadmus would know, if you can find him. I've not seen hide nor hair of him, but this place goes on further than it seems. I don't venture beyond this room, ever."

Steve might be behind any door, after all.

Calder closed the book and the drawing within, glancing to the plants past Mal. "I'd rather not talk to Cadmus." It wasn't something he wanted to bring up with a teacher lest they lecture him. It was better if he could find the plant on his own, or spot it in the garden and maybe borrow it.

Leaning against the counter, he looked over at the plants. "You shouldn't be so afraid of venturing out. It's nice out there. Thick, lots of coverage, humid..." He breathed out. "...makes me think of the swamps." He felt a sharp pain in his chest before the dreamy smile dropped.

"Doesn't it...make you think of home?" He glanced slightly at Malodore.

"Hmm... I did have a tower of my own, right on the edge, where my Casa met the swamps. It was my first laboratory, and I met my savior and mentor there..." The plague doctor closed its eyes for a moment, picturing the place. "But that place stank of decay and rot. This place is clean, green, growing. Not crumbling away." It brushed over its plants again, almost fondly.

"Oh....I see." He breathed out, a heavy sigh, before slowly sitting down as Malodore petted his plants. Opening the book in his lap, Calder looked at the picture in his book once more. "I guess you were happy to leave then....probably a relief.....sinca ya didn't want to ta there and all." Malodore has been established from it's birth in it's Casa from what Calder had learned. Not like Calder, who had to work to impress people that didn't care for him.

"Happy... hm." Malodore extended its empathy a bit and tasted Calder's feelings, delicately...

Then it abandoned its plants, moving to sit next to Calder. "I was, at first; my departure was, after all, more of a rescue. Had I not been liberated at the moment I was, I would have found myself freed in a very different manner - blinded and silenced forever, until I was pulled out of the swamp by my exiled fellows and trained to use crows for sight and voice, as they do. But I was happy, until I realized I could not stay among the exiles. I was whole, in a sense. They weren't. To my knowledge, no other plague doctor of the Casa Cirurgien has ever fled the Casa fully... ah, intact." It reached up and tapped its mask with one claw.

"I was happy to leave the Casa. I was rather less to leave those of my kind with whom I thought I would make my home."

He looked up, watching Malodore's hand gestures as much as he read Christof's - even moreso now a habit when dealing with the patchwork. When Calder had first met Mal, he had wanted to try his mask as a idle fancy, but he knew now how ignorant he was of the creature and it's kind. "That is a poor end. Makes being trampled seem like such a minor thing." Calder rubbed an arm where he had only but a few bruises now. Then again, maybe there was some mercy that Murchadh hadn't tried to tear his limbs off, which would have left Calder crippled and thus unable to run or swim again with as much freedom and speed as before. He was rather sure it was due to his mother's influence that he had been slightly sparred. It had still been terrifying.

Going quiet, he glanced back to his friend. "How did you do it? Leaving a place you wanted to stay at but couldn't?" It was frightening to him now that he didn't have a clan. He didn't have a history, traditions to call his own, and no place to go to for festivals. There was no ....no cover if anything went bad or he needed an escape. There was no where to go now.

"I didn't want to," Malodore said, quietly; it idly plucked a leaf off a nearby plant and began worrying it between its claws, releasing a sweet, herbal smell into the air. "Staying in the exile's village - they call it Corvilla - was not an option. To walk down the streets with envy and even unwilling hatred behind every crow-gaze... it would be more than anyone could stand, and cruel to them besides. It is unfair, to awaken such feelings and selfishly maintain one's presence in spite of them." The plague doctor's wings rattled for a moment.

"That was how I came here. And, I confess, once I leave this place I do not know where I will go... I try not to think about it, quite honestly. I am utterly ignorant of the ways of too many things. Obtaining property, managing a household..." It shook its head. "I am very good at a few things, and very bad at most others."

"Oh, I didn't know they wouldn't like you because ...you had a mask and they didn't?" He wanted to be sure as he knew every little about Plague Doctors and this exile island.

Frowning, he thought of the exiles in his herd. "We don't have a exile island. The leads run the bad ones away who might corrupt the herd, who don't hold to traditions, and will either run them off their territory and won't let them back or they tear them limb from limb..........or trample them." As he had experienced.

Sighing, he folded the corner of a page, fingering it to give him something to look at. "A few would leave on their own. The rebels who didn't want to stay. They usually left with friends, formed their own herds, and would taunt the others once in a while to show they didn't care about their old lives. Then they'd just vanish." Probably to find their own territories and start their own wild, crazy herds. He never thought too much about it because he didn't think it would ever happen to him. They were the bad eggs, and he was a good kelpie. Well, he had been.

"I'm just as bad as they are." Other kelpies would know what he'd done and his entire herd probably knew he had been selfish and made a bad choice. That he turned his back on them. They probably thought he was bad from the start.

"Didn't you....care what they thought about you? Your Kaysa?"

"Because I was whole, and they weren't," Malodore corrected. "Without our masks, we can neither see nor speak; the exiles of my Casa have learned to link their FEAR with specially raised crows, and borrow their senses and voices. A partnership, of sorts - but not the same as having those things for one's own. I was a constant reminder of what they'd lost..." The plague doctor shook its head. "I can understand their feelings better now than I could then."

Now that it, too, had lost something.

It listened attentively as Calder continued, nodding slowly. "I see... I do not think you are bad," it offered. "And no, I did not care. Their wants and my own were opposites, and we were never going to agree. Never." Its wings bristled just a little bit. "They probably think me dead, I would suppose. That is fine with me."

It paused. "Tell me your story, my friend?"

Calder hadn't told anyone but Barth most of his story. Not even Christof, who really knew nothing at all. He doubted the Igor would understand where he was coming from, and he was handling his own problems in his usual sloppy manner.

"My mom...she's part of the Devon clan. We're named after the rivers we were said to come from. She went to school and married another kelpie, but she wasn't paired to one that was from our clan or one the others knew about. They should he might not be a kelpie. Our clan is getting smaller, so having lots of scarlings is a big deal and having them all as kelpies. Nothing else."

"My parents live on the outskirts because my mom is in the clan, but my dad isn't. I'm in the middle. I got to be in the clan when I was a scarling, but had to prove myself when I was older. I studied so hard to learn my clan history, which is super hard because I didn't have a storyteller. I had to read and our language is just new." He rubbed his eyes remembering the strain.

"But after I took the test, a kelplie named Murchadh, one of our Leads, said I wasn't going to pass because of my dad. They didn't want me maybe having other scarlings or something." He breathed.

"So Murchadh and I made a deal. He got to claim me, and he put in a good word for me to be in his clan. I got in...."

He could have just lived like that. "But I love Barth, and I wanted to protect all of you...even if I'm not good at it. But my clan doesn't like demons, and I'd have to stay in my clan for forever once I graduate. So..I finally went to Murchadh and said I couldn't stay." It had taken him a long time to decide that.

Calder shut the book and held it to his chest. "He chased me out and trampled me. Told everyone I was selfish. Now everyone thinks my mom didn't raise me right." He set his head down against the book. It hurt to want something, to please a group, to then find out you wanted something else and then not being able to keep both. He had to pick, and though he picked right, he still felt horrible.

"I don't have a clan now." He whispered.
