User ImageHe had a new pride now, an awesome pride. Varisa very much liked the idea of winning honor and fame based on his strength and ferociousness.

Unfortunately, he hadn't had much of an opportunity to do that yet. Sure, he had sparred with the other lions, but he hadn't gone out and really made a name for himself yet. It was annoying. So he found himself trudging along the beach a good distance from his new home, looking for anything interesting he might bring back to show off to the others.

Maybe he could capture a slave -- what they called a thrall -- and prove his worth. Or beat some noteworthy enemy ... but with no one around, who would believe him? He frowned. Some kind of fabulous treasure, then. Didn't they say the sea washed up all kinds of things now and then? He was sure they said it. Someone said it, anyhow.

Strolling over to the surf, Varisa pawed at the sand. Seaweed. Lots of seaweed.

Not exactly what he was looking for...

Hiana was not entirely sure how she ended up coming so close to the coast line. It had been a mistake, a left when she should have gone straight or some other simply miscalculation of directional prowess (that she had never really confessed to owning). Still, she continued to weave away from the coastline, only to find her paws touching soft sandy beach soil on multiple occasions.

Stumbling into the shoreline, having skidded down the sandy embankment and ended up with both paws wet in the water, she yowled angrily and with a slight hint of desperation.

She bolted from the water, shaking her paws frantically to get the water off them.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
she cried in her head, unknowingly whispering the words out loud as well in her haste to flee from the thoughts in her mind.

Just one swim, a voice whispered temptingly, just one, and this would all go away.

She shook her head fiercely, trying to dry her paws on the sand, but only resulting in getting her legs rather covered in grainy granules.

Varisa wasn't expecting to meet any lions here. There weren't any prides leaving nearby, not as far as he knew, and he had a hard time imagining lions living on the beach. Why would they? Nothing good to eat. Any lion that would bother paddling around trying to catch a fish was a stupid lion. The yowl surprised him, and he jerked his head up from his examination of the seaweed.

There was a female some distance along the beach, shaking her head and pawing at the sand. She seemed to be in some distress. Abandoning his seaweed, Varisa trotted towards her. Now here was something a good deal more fascinating than a bunch of old kelp. She was beautiful, her pelt a burst of color that seemed to reflect the sea itself. He wanted instantly to possess her, like one might want a shiny trinket or a bauble.

"Are you hurt?" Varisa called, his voice solicitous. The female didn't look hurt, but she sure looked miserable.

Similarly, Hiana was not expecting to stumble upon another lion on the beach. Surely, no one was stupid enough as to live on the beach, were they? It was...a disgusting place, it would be foolish to live in such an inhospitable place.

She startled visibly at the sound of his voice, her head lifting immediately and falling back two steps. Her eyes were wide as they sought him out, before they narrowed.

He was handsome, she woul give him that, but he lived near the ocean. Perhaps he was simply a figment of her imagination, trying to lure her into the ocean. How dare the ocean try to trick her! How dare it!

"I need nothing from you," she said defensively, stumbling back, and unknowingly stumbling back towards the surf, the waves crashing close to her back paws but her gaze was focused on him, not the water.
