Rainflower gave a gentle flick of her paw sending a small pebble only a few feet away from her current position. It was another boring day within the quarry. A glance at the freshkill pile told her that hunting wasn't going very well for the clan and the medicine cat was last seen scurrying out of the camp in search for herbs. She could see the elders in the distance making a fuss over the cold and demanding the apprentices to place fresh moss in their dens.
"Fussy old bag of bones." She said as she made her way over to the freshkill pile and picked up a fat mouse for herself.

It was on her way back that she spotted Applepaw. "Hello Applepaw!" She dropped the mouse on the stone floor and debated rather to give it to the medicine apprentice or not.

"Oh hi, Rainflower," the boy responded quietly. "Are you having a good day?" He had been, though he wished that he could gone along to help search for herbs. He was good at that, but he had been instructed to stay, and so he had.

In fact, he had even been spending his time productively, helping the other apprentices change out the moss for the elders, and it was only now that he had even paused for a break.

"The elders say that it's going to be a harsher leafbare than we've seen in a while."

"Well as much as I'd hate to admit it, They may be right." She glanced over in the direction of the elder's den. One of the younger apprentices looked to be having a conversation with the oldest elder in the clan. It was when a cold breeze blew across the camp that she was reminded of the elder's warning about leafbare being worst than before. Though she thought that it was just the elders being themselves and complaining about nearly everything. But something deep inside told her that they may be right.

"Do you need help with anything?" She said returning her attention back to the medicine apprentice. "Such as gathering herbs? I may not be a medicine cat, but I can do pretty good looking for herbs."

The apprentice nodded. It certainly felt cold, though this would be his first winter so he didn't really know if it was colder or not.

The offer for her to help him gather herbs was tempting, but he had been instructed to stay around the camp, just in case. The medicine cat had been concerned with a cough one of the elders had, and wanted Applepaw to stay close to monitor things.

He was rather proud of that actually, that Berrybite had trusted him enough to leave him to do that, and it was with only a hint of regret that the boy responded. "As much as I'd love to take you up on the offer, I'm not supposed to leave camp until Berrybite gets back." He pawed at the ground absentmindly. "I'd love some company that isn't another apprentice." He didn't mind the rest of the apprentices, but sometimes they could just be a little immature for his taste.

"Of course I will keep you company." She nodded politely. It would be a while before she was placed on a patrol or a hunting team. And staying in the camp could allow her a chance to help out. Something she hasn't had the time to do since Leafebare just began. "Perhaps I could assist you in something else then."

Scanning the busy camp, she spotted a few of the younger kittens playing around the nursery. And this sparks up a bit of an idea. "Have you checked the kits in the nursery yet for any type of disease?"

"Sweet." His tail wagged happily. "And no, I hadn't gotten to the kit's yet. We checked on them yesterday and everyone was healthy, but it's probably not a bad idea to give them a look over." He grinned. "If we can catch them that is."

It seemed to him that the batch of kittens this time around were really squirmy, and unless they were napping, it was hard to check them. He chuckled to himself. Surely he hadn't been quite as wiggly as they were. "So, do you know any of the kits or their parents that are in the dens?"
