Winter certainly wasn't Dixie's favorite season. Her planet didn't have it, all this snow and biting wind. She heaved her shovel, flinging snow behind her, and sighed. Another kid was due today. Who knew that when she had urged Archie to take a little time away that she would be left with so many new babies?

At least shoveling kept her warm.

Silver shot Ananchel a dirty look as she tried to melt inside the jacket. One hand in the pocket and the other rubbing a wet patch on her butt, angry gray eyes slid scathing curses to the direction of the Seraphim.

"I told you not to run in the snow." the Seraphim said simply. "And that it's not safe for you to wear heels in the snow either."

Silver huffed, tightened her grip inside and jacket and blatantly ignored her words. "Stupid ice." she said. "Stupid cold." she almost kicked a patch of snow in front of her, except she didn't want to repeat her previous performance. "Stupid ... stupid."

Ananchel smiled slightly. It wasn't in her job description to look out for her ward's stupidity-- and besides... it was quite funny.

Silver paused, looking up at the building in front of her, and the girl shovelling the snow. Stupid shovelling-- times like this she was glad that she lived in an apartment complex.

"Excuse me?" Silver asked loudly. "I'm supposed to take a criminal into my house?"

The thought still unnerved her.

The voice that addressed Dixie caught her so off guard, her face didn't even have time to assume a scowl before she looked up. Oh, another guardian. She cocked the left side of her head to the sky. Sure enough, there was the faraway buzz of a pod zooming through the atmosphere. How did they do that? The coincidental arrivals were uncanny.

"Oh yeah. It's coming." She couldn't imagine anything bad happening this time around, and she was really cold. "We could wait inside," she suggested.

Silver frowned. What was the girl looking at? Looking in the same direction, Silver blinked.

It was the end of the world!! That thing was going to come and ki---

"Silver." Ananchel said bursquely. "Don't over react."

Dammit.

"Are you the one who sent the message?" Ananchel asked. She didn't trust her ward to say anything lucid. Not yet. "My name is Ananchel, and this is Silver." Had Ananchel been any less stiff, she would probably have rolled her eyes.

"Oh hey, I'm Dixie. And the person who probably sent the message was Archie. He's my father," she said, with a little less reluctance than she usually did. His job was hard work. "Nice to meet you," she added. She propped the shovel against the side of the house and stepped over to the two.

"Your baby should come in right about there," she said. She pointed at a snow mound, under which the bullseye was painted, even though it currently couldn't be seen.

Silver giggled. "Do they have a big sling shot, and do they place the baby in a capsule inside and sling shot and ju--"

Ananchel clapped her arm around Silver's shoulder, deciding that this should be enogh to control the erratic college student. "I'm sorry." she said, deciding to apologize for her ward. "She slipped in the snow."

Silver quietened, and glared. "Dixie's cute." she said simply, and brightened. "Archie, do you mean, like--"

"Not the comic, Silver." came the weary answer.

"That's okay," Dixie said in response to Ananchel's apology. "Actually, it's like a little rocket launcher and they shove you in this baby-sized hole and it's all gross, especially when you take off and the Gs flatten your head into your neck." Probably too much information, but eh.

Dixie didn't comment on her name. It wasn't like she had been the one to make it up. The very fact that Archie had called her that surely implied that Silver wasn't too far off in her assessment. "Pretty close. Archie was a puppet. He wouldn't show me his mugshot until I bit it out of him. But it's obvious with that stupid tail. I mean, who has felt on their skin?"

The pod was close enough to be visible now, a tiny spot in the sky. It was much louder too.

"Felt tail?" Silver brightened. Archie had a felt tale? "Puppet?" she tilted her head. Hmmm... now what was her baby going to look like? Much more interested now on the arrival of the pod, she looked up into the sky. "Can't be very safe, huh?" she commented.

Ananchel shook her head, frowning. Times like this she wondered why any demon would take to take her ward over. She was frustrating enough as it is-- surely a stupid demon wouldn't make such a difference.

"Is Archie in?" Ananchel asked. Weren't they supposed to pay their respect to the owner? At least... that was what she thought was the proper thing to do.

"It's all right," Dixie commented. "Like falling down really. It's more uncomfortable when you first get in there then when you land." Dixie wondered how Archie could stand it, repeating facts about pod landings all the time. Maybe she should make up some sort of fact sheet to go with their new business cards.

Dixie shook her head. "Archie's off at some spa," she replied. "But I don't think anything bad will happen."

Suddenly, the engine noise cut off considerably and Dixie grabbed at her scarf. It was too high for parachute deployment, and a thin trail of smoke still shot from the back of the pod. It was just... quieter. Not yet able to see anything wrong, Dixie's deathhold on her scarf loosened. She remembered the awesome new door on yesterday's pod and filed this under "new technology" as well.

"A spa?!" Silver stared, a note of wistfulness entering her voice as she turned to Ananchel. "He's at a spa." she said meaningfully.

Ananchel snorted. "That's because he probably deserves it." she replied.

Silver looked away, deciding that she didn't like what Ananchel was NOT saying. Didn't Silver deserve it as well? Putting up with a seraphim who thought she knew everything...

She stared, looking up at the floating pod and blinked. She tilted her head.

"Is that..." she started.

"It's okay, Silver. Maybe it's some kind of strange technology." Ananchel assured her.

It wasn't enough. "Is my baby okay?" she asked. Thank goodness Ananchel had her arm around Silver-- else her question might have been more dramatic.

"He got knocked upside the head and wouldn't stop whining about it. One of the new parents offered him a free room at some resort place and I said I could handle things here. And I can," she said with a nod.

Meanwhile, the pod was approaching parachute-deploying height and... there it went. "Yeah, it's fine," Dixie said. "I've never heard them come in so quiet, but they're getting better with these pod things all the time." She didn't add the story about the one that had almost crashed last month. No one needed to hear about that.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 06, 2006 6:15 pm

"As long as it doesn't crash, it's fine, right?" Silver said. Mentally making a list to whine to find out who that other parent was (surely if one person could whine, another could complain?) Silver stared at the parachute.

...

Was she supposed to catch it, or what?

She turned to Ananchel with questioning eyes, and Ananchel merely shrugged. It wasn't _her_ baby, afterall.

Dixie made with the 'calm-down' hands. "Yeah, everything's okay. Just don't get too close to it or it'll land on you."

The windows in the houses around them buzzed faintly as the pod bounced to a stop in a packed pile of snow. It wobbled a little and then the little door on top hissed open.

Silver blinked. Before Ananchel could caution her, she nipped forewords, jumping from her left to right foot as she peered curious through the little door. Now, was this safe at all? Silver didn't know.

Ananchel closed her eyes, rubbing away a migraine.

Dixie approached as well, catching sight of something bright red inside the ship.

"Go ahead," she urged. Whatever it was, it was certainly brightly colored. She glanced at her own yellow skin before taking another step toward the pod.
