Cats and the Holidays

Cats are becoming more and more members as our families. We include them in virtually everything we do and long gone is the idea that outdoor cats are happiest, that they don't show affection.

Because they are included in our busy, hectic lives, it is ideal we keep them safe in any situation. Espessially the holidays. The crazy running around, the onslaught of people coming and going, the wide variety of foods being prepared and all the little things that come and go.

This is an overview on how to keep your cat safe during the holiday season and to prevent any emergency vet visits.

The Major Holidays

*Please keep in mind that Im doing this based on the USA's Holiday schedule, if you are a different nationality and would like to contribute your holiday, please feel free to add it*

New Years Day Jan 1st

New Years Day usually contains fireworks, drinking, and the getting together of famlies.

~Make sure your pet is indoors (even if hes an outdoor cat)
~Make sure your pet is set up in a sanctuary room (fireworks and cats dont mix)
~Make sure that any food/beverages are not within reach of the cat
~If you are leaving, make sure that your cat is safe and secure

Valentines Day Feb 14th

Valentines Day is celebrated by couples.

~Keep any chocolates out of reach, it ingested, it could kill your cat
~Tinsel, wrapping, ribbons should be thrown away or stored immediately
~Flowers should be put away in a room not accessed to the cat; many are poisonous if ingested (Lilys', Chrysanthemums, etc)

4th of July (Independance Day)

Fireworks. Please see New Years Day.

Halloween Oct 31st

Black Cats beware!! Due to the coming and going of sticky little humans, please be sure to keep your cat in a safe place. If he is outdoors, bring him in for the week. Evil doers will often harm cats (and dogs).

~Keep your cat indoors
~If you own a black cat, this is paticularily important
~All candies must be picked up and kept in a safe spot. Make sure all wrappers get thrown away promptly
~If your cat is skittish or shy, place her in a sanctuary room

Thanksgiving Last Thursday in November

The time to be thankful and to be with family.

~Some foods are toxic to cats, make sure to know which ones they are
~Don't feed your cat anything with garlic or onions
~Tidbits are okay (what cat cant resist turkey giblets?)
~Make sure your cat is safe and comfy if you have guests
~If there is children in the house, make sure they understand the rules involving your cat (if cat is not used to children)

Christmas Dec 25th

Christmas time is especially dangerous to felines. Be wary of glass bobbles, electric lights, the tree itself and boxes that gifts come in.

~Make sure the tree is off limits to your feline (booby trap it if you have to)
~Make sure to check all boxes before disposing of them (your cat could be inside)
~Tinsel, wrapping paper, ribbons etc are dangerous if ingested. If you see a string in the cats mouth or the other end, go to the vet promptly. DO NOT PULL ON THE STRING
~ Poinsettias are incredibly poisonous to cats and dogs if ingested

Human Birthdays

Same rules apply to wrapping paper, tinsel and ribbons. Do not feed your cat cake. (If you must make a kitty cake!)

So... Something did happen...

Cat ate tinsel, cat ate garlic, cat got electrocuted by eating the bulbs off the christmas tree....

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR VETS NUMBER ON HAND OR AN EMERGENCY VET LISTED. MAKE SURE YOUR FAMILY OR CARETAKER KNOWS WHERE TO FIND THESE NUMBERS. YOUR CATS LIFE COULD DEPEND ON IT.

Days where people are coming and going/the door's open a lot/for a long time (when everybody's arriving/leaving) - try to keep kitty contained in an area where it can't reach the exit (aka: there should be at least one door closed between kitty and the door to outside) to prevent kitty ending up outside unintentionally.

Canadian Turkey Day = second Monday Oct.
Christmas = Dec. 25
Canada Day = July 1

Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day (any day, really, but I know for some they're more of a deal with holidays) - watch your cat around candles; they can catch their tail on fire walking past, their nose/whiskers checking it out, or just plain accidentally knock them over.

With kids-around holidays - remind them that they are not allowed to feed the animals anything (without asking the owner), and to watch for slopping and crumbs/clean up messes immediately.
