Gideon was tired. Tired of constantly being called upon to pass judgement upon those in the kingdoms. He had just come from King Astarand's kingdom and he was looking forward to some down time. Walking down the road, which led away from the castle of the king of coins, he heard a noise coming from within the copse of trees to his right. He was far enough away from the castle and its surrounding village to be suspicious of who or what might be causing the noise. He was tossing around the idea of just walking on and not bothering to investigate, but the little voice in his head prevented him from choosing that option. He left the road, making his way through the thigh-high grass, which was still damp from the mornings dew. He reached the tree line and listened again for the noise.

Niniane was not used to being denied what she wanted. But that was exactly what was happening right now. She knew she had all the correct ingredients, and she was speaking all the correct words, but for some unknown reason the trick was not working. She was supposed to perform this evening for the King and Queen, as well as their guests, and the stupid trick was not working! Sure, she had other tricks up her sleeve, so-to-speak, but with this trick, she would make a name for herself in the kingdoms. Cursing loudly, she continued trying to perfect the trick, checking each element multiple times, and combing over her notes on how it was supposed to be done. She'd seen it done by the magician who created the trick, and she had paid dearly for the knowledge of how to pull it off. If she could not make it work, then she was going to be very upset with the one she had bought the rights from.

There it was again! Only this time, he was close enough to make out that it was a woman's voice he was hearing, and she was quite upset about something from the language she was using. He slowly, and as quiet as he could, made his way forward into the stand of trees. It was still early enough in the day that the leaf litter on the ground was wet with dew. However, he still kept an eye out for twigs lying on the ground, and took care to step over them, instead of on them. Following the voice, he was able to make out her location by the bright colors of her clothing, which stood out in stark contrast to her surroundings. She had her back turned to him, so he was unable to see what it was that had her in such a state of anxiety. For she definitely seemed anxious about something. As he crept closer he was able to see her more clearly, and from the patterns on her clothing, and the hat upon her head, it became apparent that she was a magician. Not wanting to interrupt what was obviously a magician having trouble with some trick, he turned to leave. CAW! CAW! He looked up quickly and saw the black raven sitting on a branch above his head. He turned his attention back to the woman before him, hoping the bird had not alerted her to his presence, but as he did his hopes were dashed.

She was getting nowhere, and her temper and patience were waning. So focused on what she was doing, she never heard the man come upon her from behind until the birds call turned her around. She stood there for a moment, just staring at him as he brought his attention from the bird, back to her. She looked him up and down, and took particular notice of the horn he held in his hand. She knew who he was, though she had never had occasion to meet him personally. Judgement. That was how most knew him. She figured he probably had a name, but she had never heard it. What was he doing here? Well, there was one way to find out. She had nothing to fear from him. She had done nothing wrong.

"I know you Judgement. What cause do you have to sneak up on me unannounced?"

"Forgive me milady. I was simply traveling down the road, heard a commotion from within these trees, and felt it my duty to investigate. If I disturbed you in my attempt it was not my intention. Though since I am here, if there is any assistance I can offer you, I am at your disposal. I have no other commitments at this time."

What was he doing! I am at your disposal? He should have simply apologized, and taken his leave. Why was he offering her help? She was obviously not in need of it. He was no magician, nor did he know anything remotely related to magic and tricks. He could only hope that her response would be to bid him leave.

Help? From him? Was he serious? She almost laughed outloud, but kept her poise. She didn't answer him at once, for a thought had just occurred to her, and she was frantically trying to configure a way to present it to him. She fiddled with the wand in her hand, and finally settled on the best way to proceed.

"Actually yes, there is something you can help me with. It would seem that something I recently purchased has not lived up to its expectations. The person I bought it from assured me that it would work, and I have come to realize that it does not. I would like you to get my gold back for me from the one who sold it to me."

She knew this was not what Judgement normally did, but it was worth a shot since he had offered his assistance. Her whole performance tonight relied on this trick, and if she was going to make a name for herself, she had to have it work. She stood there, tightening the belt on her robe, and running her fingers through her hair. She was not oblivious to the fact that her looks had gotten her many of the things she wanted, and she could only hope that the man standing before her had a penchant for beautiful things.
