So, any of you NM folks happen to know of a decent garage (or even better, auto machinist) in Gallup, NM?

My brother's been on a road trip around America, got caught in a flash flood travelling through Death Valley, and now his car's crankshaft is done for. The garage he went to this morning said it'd be a $2000 repair - the car isn't worth that much.
Or if you know someone trying to get rid of an old car that has 5,000 miles minimum left in it.... my brother might buy it.

Ask friends/family... it'd be appreciated.

I don't know anything about Gallup, except that I heard it's dangerous for a small city and that lots of Native Americans live there and lots of racism happens there.

Ouch. Thanks for that info. My brother's travelling with a Russian and a Chinese guy [yay multiculturalism?]... and well, my brother's Caucasian, so if it's racism against white people he's in trouble too...

Thanks guys. You're the two I knew lived in the state. Fortunately it sounds like his insurance will cover a replacement vehicle as well as a rental car. My brother was careful to get good insurance before leaving on the trip.

Well I'm not sure, I just heard rumors. And I think most of the racism is towards the Native Americans, or sometimes the other way around to the whites from the Natives. Such as a white person treating a Native American differently at a car dealership.

I live in Montreal. It's an island-city. On the south shore there's a reserve called Kahnawake that has a major highway running by it, and on that highway there're all those dealerships. Also lots of cigarette stores in sheds with big signs...

... Wow, you're ignorant.

Yes, yes we do. Lots and lots of them across the country, many of which were poorly placed in my opinion - right beside major cities, thus inevitably the city would want to run a highway through it or even take over the land...

But shipping them up north now wouldn't be "fair," so it's a mess. I don't really get the point of it any more. The government exempts them from paying almost any taxes, has huge bursaries and other bonuses toward university education, and tons of other freebies/encouragements, yet all I ever hear is how "disadvantaged" the native population is. If you want to live in the "old ways," fine, do so... it means going hungry a lot of the time. If you want modern conveniences, come join the rest of the world. You can't have both. =/

I know. I don't agree with the placement of the reservations. Poor Native. So they are called the Native Canadians? Is that like eskimo people? biggrin

We have lotsa NA Reservations here in the southwest to. Nearest is near Ruidoso where the Mescalero Apaches live. They own a Casino and resort there, lolz. I think that's the only one in South NM. Theres lots more in Northern NM, especially of course around Gallup, North of Albuquerque in the mountains in stuff. If you drive by them, it looks like a third world country... O.O Most of them are probably poor.

We've should've just coexisted with them way back when, that's what Mexico did.

They're called Native Americans, Indians, Amerindians, Natives, Indigenous people, etc etc...

Officially through our (very old) laws they're called Indians and most of them use that term as well.

Eskimos prefer to be called Inuit, since Eskimo is thought to have been an Algonquin term for "raw meat eater," thus similar to (but not as bad as) calling a black person the N-word...

I won a book for a history contest that called them Eskimo's least I think they did, it's been a while since I looked at it.

But in a South Park episode, they call them the Native Canadians. sad And they are like the Inuit people with the weird coats in stuff. sad The episode where it's about the Royal Wedding of Canada on South Park.
