Alexis had taking up diner crawling to find a place to start writing her new book. That was when she found this one little hole in the wall diner. It was called Maggie's.
She'd noticed there was a dog running around outside of the restaurant, 'greeting people'. She couldn't help but wonder if the dog actually belonged to someone or if there was a reason he was allowed to run around outside.
She had to budget her money and make it last as long as possible so when she decided to sit down she pondered her options for food and went perhaps the cheapest route possible, which was coffee and a bagel. While she'd managed to write a few pages while at home.
Alexis was missing the people aspect that had came with her old job, barring those occasionally annoying kids that had come with it. Which is why she'd come to the diner. As she sat one leg was crossed over the other and she was bouncing her foot as she thought waiting for a waiter to come by and take her order.

While the little hole in the wall didn't look fancy or have much in the way of identification other than a sign on the building and a poster in the window advertising pie, people arriving were greeted with friendly acknowledgment by staff, which was not so much business policy as 'oh thank god, please spend money here' demeanor.
Still, in the early morning breakfast and brunch hours the place was clean and smelled like baking bread, even if understaffed for their usual breakfast crowd.
Noah was puttering along trying to keep everyone happy with complimentary coffee refills when he came to the woman who looked like she was about to settle in. Not unusual for the time of day. Where dinners had a lot more on the go customers, the mornings tended to be slower, more relaxed affairs.
Well, for the customers.
"Sorry for the wait," He apologized, half frazzled already and coffee pot in hand. Which he had to put down on the table to write down her order.

Alexis paused looking up from her laptop as Noah apologized, "What wait?" She asked cheerfully. Unlike the mornings of the previous years she actually had time to sit and enjoy breakfast at a reasonable hour. Not wolf it down.
"Can I get a coffee and a Bagel please?" She asked hands folded to provide a resting spot for a head for a moment. Giving a smile towards the waiter, "Do you happen to have any fruit?" She asked pondering she could spare some change on a banana or something not too messy. She didn't want to leave her keyboard sticky with juice from oranges. Unless it was a fruit salad that could be eaten with a fork...

Noah quizzed her with all the usual questions. What kind of bagel? Butter? Cream cheese? Side? Ham? Lox? Bacon? Coffee's free, sorry for the wait! Decaf or regular? Noah was like a machine on high speed and after he'd jotted everything down, a passing waitress with a fresh batch of clean coffee mugs ended up with one poached with a flick of the wrist, barely even turning, and set the hot mug down to fill it up with the coffee pot he'd been toting around.
Yeah, he'd been doing this all morning. He was in hyper efficiency mode and sped around where he might've made conversation on a slow lunch hour.
"Fruit..." That one was a puzzler. He didn't have it in his queue of 'question, answer, question, answer' and the were a diner that tended to be famous for fatty burgers and deep fried fat breakfast platters.
They DID have fresh fruit, but mostly because that was the selling point of their pies. "What do you like?" He could chop fruit, no biggie.

Alexis managed to answer all the questions promptly. So as not to keep Noah too long with taking her order, butter of course for the bagel, and plain. She wasn't a fan of cream cheese. Ham for a side, and regular coffee.
When her coffee mug was poached and nicely filled she started adding cream and sugar. "Uh you know... Like an apple, maybe strawberries, or grapes? Stuff that you'd find in a fruit salad, or just a banana would be nice." She added.
Of course pie was always tempting but not for breakfast. She'd be more open to an actual pie after lunch.

"I'll be back, then," And Noah fled. Collecting chopped fruit from the kitchen was a bit of a task, and involved sifting through the walk in for stuff that would go together. He froze and tried to remember if she said anything about strawberries, thoroughly traumatized by the family with the large man and the deathly allergic daughter.
No, this lady said she liked strawberries. Okay. No near death would be happening here.
Eventually he gathered a decent mix of chopped fruits in a ramekin and gathered up her order, along with several others, and was off to make his rounds again.
By the time he got to Alexis, he looked around to realize he actually had nothing to do. Well not yet, until his cook called for more tickets or more customers walked in.
"Here you go... what are you writing?" Polite curiosity.

Alexis nodded as Noah said he'd be back and fled towards the kitchen. She was typing away at her laptop, pausing occasionally to think about what she was writing and reword things here and there as she proof read what she had already.
This was proving to be a difficult task. She paused when he appeared back, with her order. She smiled to see there was actually fresh fruit in the place. Something she'd almost expected to be non-existent.
"Huh.... oh a book." She answered vaguely unsure if she should answer what kind just yet. "I'm trying to make it as an author... I recently quit my other job." She took a small piece of fruit with a fork and popped it into her mouth.

"Oh," Noah breathlessly nodded and then smiled his best 'for customers' smile. "Well feel free to stick around while you work!" He said cheerfully. Where fast food places relied on getting people in and out as quickly as possible, Noah's greasy spoon styled establishment was more dependent on people lingering long enough to order snacks, drinks, and pie.
And she was writing! Well that was nice. Most writer types like more trendy places like coffee shops. Or at least that was his impression.
"I'll be around, feel free to grab me if you need anything," He winked before going about his business, just sort of floating and filling in during the rush.

Alexis smiled, "Thank you, I might stick around through lunch. I don't have anywhere more pressing to be at least."
The former teacher nodded before going back to typing and occasionally nibbling on the fruit. She nodded, "I shall!" She caught the wink and gave a little nervous chuckle as he left to tend to others. It was probably a little embarrassing to admit what she was writing. Maybe she should use a pen name?
A while passed and it was coming closer to lunch time. Alexis had written a sizable amount in the time she'd been there, occasionally watching others and how they interacted. It was quite different than her elementary school works.
She'd also planned her order for when Noah came back. A chicken sandwich sounded good, with fries and one of the fruit pies and a tea with lemon. However, she was stuck on what kind of fruit pie she wanted. Maybe the waiter would be able to provide her with a suggestion.
She'd finished perhaps her 4th cup of coffee that morning as well. So she waited for him to waltz by and stop him to give her order, then she could at least pop off for a quick restroom break while she waited for food.

Noah was pretty cool about people just hanging out, even if a part of him suspected she was milking the free coffee bit they were spontaneously having today. But whatever. With their growing reputation, good buzz was invaluable.
He occasionally dropped by to attempt casual conversation, but was always pulled away, even as the crowd thinned to just a few lingering parties and a few just coming in for early lunch.
He did stop by to take her lunch order, but by the time he came back with her drink, she was gone. He shouldn't have, but he couldn't resist. He peeked at her laptop to see this secretive novel she was writing. He only read a paragraph or two before it sunk in and the usually mellow man's face suddenly flushed red. Holy s**t, this b***h was writing porn! Well, lady porn, but still.
The fact that was what she had been thinking about and writing the entire time suddenly made everything retroactively awkward and he quickly made his way back to the kitchen to avoid being seen peeking when she came back.
Of course, then her lunch order was done and he was in this awkward between shifts time so he couldn't pawn it off on another server.
She grabbed the plate and went out to face the music, clearly uncomfortable and praying that she would still be gone.

It wasn't that she meant for anyone to see it. It actually wasn't even that horrible, if he'd probably read somewhere other than the bits she was currently writing.
Had Alexis known what was going on when she left for the restroom, perhaps she wouldn't've left the computer unattended. Being the 'romantic' that she was, it was completely acceptable, at least to her.
She was back by the time her lunch order was ready. Poor Noah..... well probably poor Alexis had she known where his mind went when he'd read her writing. Obviously, she was going to need someone to proof read before attempting to find a publisher, but ambushing someone without a preface, well that was just unfair. The blonde was drumming her finger tips on the table as she thought when Noah was bringing her food out.
