Given how often he had found his feet turning there as late, Athene had deliberately decided against patrolling in the park. Instead the dark-haired senshi had chosen to go deeper into town and patrol the alleyways that ran behind some of the shops. It was not an area of town that he ventured into as his non-powered alter-ego and he found himself wrinkling his nose up as he caught the scent of rubbish left dumped in the alleyway intermixed with a strong smell of alcohol. The alleyways had been mostly deserted apart from the couple of out-of-it drunks that he had stumbled across earlier and Athene had been contemplating heading back to a more savoury part of town. In fact the dark-haired senshi had turned and just start to take a few steps back when he had sensed a chaotic aura further down the alley and had turned back to investigate.

Virtus liked alleys, if only because there were usually people sleeping in or drunkenly wobbling through them. It made patrolling easier, because he didn't have to scare conscious or aware people with his wraith and his duty.
Most people did not always agree when he asked them if he could borrow some of their energy. Oddly enough.
But Virtus could understand that.
He felt a senshi's aura and that surprised him. But it wasn't a bad thing: he knew he needed to talk to them more. Get them on the right side, and help them see their misunderstandings about the Dark Mirror senshi.
He saw the senshi soon enough and waved a hello, jogging over. He paused though, realizing he had met this one before. He didn't think there would be much talking, at least not successful, but he was not one to get pessimistic.

It didn’t take long for Athene to discover the source of the aura, as it happened the source of the aura wasn’t that far ahead of him. Sensing auras was a two way street and it seemed that the other had picked up on his as well and was heading in his direction. A look of puzzlement flickered across the dark-haired senshi’s face as the source – a taller blond senshi – waved at him as he headed in his direction, but as the other got closer Athene realised that he recognised this senshi. “Sailor Virtus” he said quietly. They had had a fight that had not quite been a fight during their last encounter. They had been at differing power levels then, although it seemed that Virtus had ranked up since that last meeting.

Virtus was stronger now, and more determined. He was not worried about getting himself hurt, because he knew what he was doing was right. He looked at the White Moon senshi and did not see an enemy, not yet.
He saw someone who could, one day, be an ally.
He took a slow, deep breath.
"It's nice to see you again. You're looking well! Are you still definitely against the dark mirror court? I was wondering if you would want to uhm. Well! Join us! You could you know, and then we wouldn't have to fight any more."
Hopefully that was a strong enough argument. Neither liked to fight, right? But of course, he was more inclined to it now because he had a bit more chaos pulsing through him. He would do what he needed to do, either way. He had to! He'd promised.

Given their fight but not-quite fight during their last encounter, Virtus’ ‘nice to see you again’ statement was the last thing that Athene had been expecting. “I am well thank you” Athene acknowledged quietly and then because it seemed only polite he added. “I hope you are too.” Listening quietly as the other asked him about joining up with the Dark Mirror court, Athene shook his head once Virtus had finished speaking before saying quietly, “I’m not interested in joining your Court” a brief pause on his part before he added “But we don’t have to fight – not if you’re not going to steal energy from the civilians.” The dark-haired senshi wasn’t the sort of senshi to dash in looking for a fight and he didn't particularly want to fight Virtus.

Virtus looked like a toddler caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
"I am going to borrow some energy... I have to keep doing it! You know that. I am very sorry about that." He shook his head and frowned, thinking that just meant that they had to fight now. He remembered how that worked.
That was the way it worked with a lot of people.
He lifted up his fists, though he looked slightly hesitant.. No! He was training, he was learning! He was stronger now! This was what he had to do, he knew that. If they did not want to join his side, he had to make sure he could keep doing his job, and that was obviously not going to happen.
"I don't want to fight, but I have to do my job. You understand, you're just doing the same thing, but we can't seem to do it at the same time..."

Athene bit his lip “Couldn’t you take a day, um night off from doing it?” he asked quietly as he watched the other senshi raise his fists, not making any attempt to reciprocate – at least not at this point. Despite his few lessons in Aikido in order to better defend himself – the dark-haired senshi still didn’t particularly want to fight if he didn’t have to. Besides the only thing he could do with any great reliability was fall down properly – probably not the best skill to have if they ended up having to fight. Maybe he would be lucky though and it wouldn’t come to it. Maybe Virtus would agree not to bother with the energy stealing tonight (and yes it was totally stealing and not borrowing) so that Athene wouldn’t feel obliged to have to try and stop him.

Virtus frowned at the question, looking thoughtful and not angry about it. He had never thought about taking a night off, not after he had started his patrol. He had a regular schedule worked out for himself and he was not going to break away from it because it worked so well for him.
He shook off the frown, which did not look very much like one anyway. It was like the muscles in his lips did not know how to turn downwards.
"I'm afraid I can't! I said I would get my energy tonight and I have to do it! But I'm sure you understand. And there's no hard feelings, right? We're both just doing our jobs!"
He lunged at him then, swinging his fist for the other's face like he was taught to do, and not so much because he wanted to hurt the senshi. He just wanted to get him to go away, so he, Virtus, could continue his work. And this was how he had to do it. He knew that, had been told that, and now did not consider fighting the bad thing. He did not mean ill by it, after all. They were just doing as they were told to do! Until they could all be on the same side.
He'd make up for it then.

Virtus lunging at him took Athene by surprise. Granted the dark-haired senshi hadn’t really expected the Dark Mirror senshi to suddenly decide to take a night off from energy-draining but he hadn’t expected the other to rush at him swinging either. Making a sound that sounded very much like a startled 'Ack', Athene took a a step back and raised his hand into one of the ready defence positions that he’d been learning in his Thursday evening Aikido self-defence classes. It was clumsy – much clumsier than the way he’d seen it demonstrated, but it was enough to stop Virtus’ fist from making direct contact with his face. He couldn’t remember the second part of the move, so settled for trying to use the hand not blocking the other’s fist to try and push out at the blond senshi.

Virtus had learned a bit after he had been given his Super status, and most of that was how to fight. And that fighting was necessary. He needed to do it, so he could do his service to his Court. He did not have to enjoy it, and that was a complication he did not over think.
He just did as he was told!
True enough, he was not directly told to punch Athene in the face, or attempt to, at least, but he could not be that specific when he had over arching orders to guide him. The rest would all fall in to place. That was just how life worked!
He was surprised when the other was able to block his attack though, not seeing that kind of move before. This guy was actually trained!
"Whoa!" he said, sounding impressed. When he was pushed, though, he made to grab on to the other guy's arm and started to grapple with him. It was the best thing he could do, since he was now distracted and wondering who had helped train him. And if they were available for both sides. Virtus wanted to know how to do that!

It had been the gatecrashed senshi and knight meeting that had been the catalyst that had eventually driven Athene’s civilian counterpart to start taking self-defence classes, it was probably a measure of how much he disliked fighting in that he had settled on one that was more about attempting to use the strength of the opponent against them rather than outright attack. Despite him diligently turning up each Thursday evening, the self-defence classes were very much a recent thing – the dark-haired senshi hadn’t really had that many lessons yet and although there were a few things that he’d learnt, he had yet to become proficient at anything other than properly breaking his fall – something he’d seemed to pick up relatively quickly. Unable to stop Virtus from grabbing his arm, Athene instead tried his best to yank his arm sharply forward and down towards him as his instructor had tried to teach him. If it worked then maybe he’d be able to get the other off-balance. Problem was that the move had seemed a lot easier to do in demonstration, now when attempting to use what he’d learnt in real-time, the dark-haired senshi couldn’t be sure that he was doing it right. Shame that ‘breakfalling’ wasn’t something that was required – Athene was pretty sure he’d managed to get that right.

Learning how to fall well would likely help Virtus in the long run, as he was destined for many falls, and so far he had not been very good at them. But then, he didnt know that there was a good way to fall down. He just thought it was gravity having its way with him.
There was nothing he could do!
He stumbled forward when Athene pulled on his arm, not really planning too far ahead in his counter attack efforts. He let out a surprise sound and flailed is other arm, swatting at Athene uselessly.
His lessons had not covered a moment like this, so he was a little lost. He just knew he needed to get himself away from the senshi so he could take a proper swing. But at the moment he was off balance and tilted forward.

Actually unknown to Athene both his and Virtus’ plans at least partially coincided – the getting away part not the taking a swing bit. The dark-haired senshi hadn’t really been expecting to actually manage to get the taller senshi and he wasted a few moments trying to remember what he was supposed to do next before trying to twist his trapped hand out of the other’s grip while using his free hand to try and shove at the hopefully still off-balance senshi in an attempt to both free and give him a chance to try and put some space between them. “Look I honestly don’t want to hurt you” he admitted.

Virtus fell over like the champ he was, hitting the ground hard and scuffing his palms. He was going to have palms of steel before he was an Eternal, he was sure of that much. And then it wouldn't hurt as much whenever he fell!
So, he supposed falling down now was a good thing.
Pushing himself up, he did not get all the way to his feet before he charged at Athene. He knew that the other didn't want to hurt him, and he didn't want to hurt Athene either, but they had to do what they were meant to.
These were his orders and his place in the world. He couldn't talk his way out of every battle, and he thought about that as he tried to tackle Athene head on. Without magic to help him, it was difficult to win fights. At least he could heal, but that was really only useful if he had a partner with him and they needed help.
"I know you don't," he huffed in the middle of his attack, tired, "and I don't hold it against you!"

Athene hadn’t quite expected Virtus to fall over like that, surprise flickering across his face as the taller senshi went down. His surprise had left him not quite as on guard as he perhaps should have been, which meant the blonde’s decision to charge at him from a half crouch took the dark-haired senshi completely by surprise. It was enough to send him tumbling backwards, although Athene remembered to keep his head tucked forward and his spine curved, while trying to use the palm of his hands to hit the ground as he’d been taught. He managed to get it mostly right – Athene was learning practicing in weekly lessons wasn’t quite the same as putting it into practice – although he misjudged the timing of when to let his palms hit the ground causing the impact to jar more than it should have. Unfortunately the impact with the ground also knocked his glasses wonky.
