The rapids further upstream lead to the waterfall lagoon. It is a beautiful clearing among the trees where the fast flowing water goes over the falls and come to a halt. The water it flows into has pooled - it is deep and still, and slowly drains deep into the earth. Many come here to relax or get away from the hustle of pack life. In the winter, parts of the lagoon will freeze over.

Afon

User Image
Nose pressed to the ground the young wolf rooted about in the dirt of the forest floor. The tawny brute wasn't looking for anything in particular, he was just enjoying finding new and peculiar smells in amongst the leaves, grass and other things that covered the ground. This wolf had no worries about rank or feeling like he belonged in the pack. Of course he belonged in the pack, it was his home, he'd been born here. Anyone who thought he didn't belong in this territory with these wolves was clearly an idiot. Totally carefree was the brute named Afon, there seemed little that could bring the males mood down.

A small rustling sound caught the males attention and caused him to give pause, ears shifting to locate the sound. A small squeak reached him and turning his head slightly he spotted the small patch of grass that shifted as something small moved through it. Sniffing the air Afon could tell the smell was that of a mouse, well that'd make a tasty little thing. It was getting late, but Afon wouldn't consider himself very hungry. Although it was rare that the wolf ever considered himself not hungry. Afon was the kind of wolf that was happy to do nothing but eat, play, sleep and then eat again. Angling himself the wolf got ready to pounce on the unsuspecting creature.

Jumping into the longed grass Afon heard a loud squeak and tried to snap his jaws shut on it, unfortunately for the young spirited wolf the mouse had been faster to react than he had. His jaws snapped shut on nothing, except for air. Not quite ready to give up however the reddish-brown male wasn't ready to give up. He bounded after the mouses trail, skidding through dirt and clearly not serious about catching it anymore. Now was more about chasing the small thing and maybe eating it. True he had been told not to play with his food, but Afon couldn't help it. With a lack of playmates present he'd have to improvise.

The mouse disappeared into a hole in a tree and Afon stopped, sniffing around the entrance to the rodent's hiding place. "Alright, mouse, you win," Afon said, laughing goodnaturedly. He snorted to get the dirt away from his nose. It was only then that the wolf realised just how dirty he was. He hadn't really noticed how much had got stuck in his fur after his little game. Giving a rough shake the brute tried to dislodge everything from his pelt. Nope, that didn't work. Hm, he couldn't go back to the den looking like this, there'd be some that would have something to say about it, probably about him acting his age or some other nonsense.

What to do? It was then that Afon remembered. The lagoon was nearby, that'd get everything off him and he didn't mind getting wet. The brute actually enjoyed a good swim every now and again. Spinning around, and kicking up quite a mess in the meantime, Afon bound off towards the water. This way, he could have fun and nobody could complain that he was dirty. The water came into view and that would have been a good time for the grown wolf to stop. However that was not his plan. Darting to the side the brute jumped up onto a large rock before leaping at full speed into the water with a loud and happy yip.

((I know this layout is bad, but I gotta go to lectures and was determined to post this first, I'll fix it when I get back though.))

Daciana was making her way back to where her and the other Psi's called home. It was away from the main den but it was comfortable. As she approached some pups came to her, jumping around her legs and tripping over her paws. She bent down and nuzzled them, just as happy to see them as they were to see her. Held in her mouth were a few herbs for one of the sick members of there group. She had been complaining about some pain in her stomach earlier that didn't seem to subside as the day went on, so just before sunset, Daciana had gone to pick these herbs for her. They were bitter but her mother had told her they were good for all kinds of aches and pains. Walking into the den, she placed them in front of the sick she-wolf and nuzzled her. "These should help you feel better. They don't taste good, but Mother always said that they were the best." She licked the fae's face then sat down, watching her.

The young fae missed her mother dearly. Her parents had left only a few months ago, deciding to head out on their own and make their own pack. Her siblings had followed with them, but Daciana, decided that someone should stay and take care of these pups. They needed someone to support them, someone who had been through what they were right now to help them when they got hurt and encourage them to keep fighting. Other wolves who were born pups and managed to rise above their rank to become "full" members of the pack often shunned the group they were born into like the plague and became just as cruel as everyone else. Daci never did that. It was probably the reason why she was still more of a Psi than a Member. How could she turn her back on these wolves who were her family for as long as she could remember? The thought of doing such a thing filled her with a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. She was born Psi but it wasn't her fault, just like how it wasn't the fault of her parents. They loved each other and it looked like they were going to be denied the right to mate. Again. Food was plentiful, and there should have been no problem. They thought they could hide the pregnancy by just claiming that her mother was sick, but it wasn't possible and in the end they had been found out.

The sound of the older she-wolf in front of her coughing, brought Daciana out of her thoughts. "Thank you, Daciana. I don't know what we would do without you." the sick wolf said as she nuzzled the younger. The white wolf only smiled, a bit sadly and nuzzled her in return. This wolf was once a Sigma but had argued with a higher ranking wolf about something. She still believed that her actions were just seeing as the other wolf was over stepping his boundaries, but with no one willing to back her up then she was demoted. It wasn't right. Daci heard so many stories of injustice that it made her heart break. She saw so much cruelty and only wished this cycle would end.

Abruptly, she turned and ran out the den, heading to the one place that could bring her some peace of mind. The waterfall. She ran, making a beeline for the falls, needing to hear the sound of cascading water to calm her nerves. Some of the younger wolves tired to follow her, but she quickly lost them as she ran full speed towards the falls. She arrived as the last rays of sunset disappeared and the sky was an inky darkness, the stars the only points of light. She slowed into a jog, panting softly, then ran up a small incline and stopped, looking at the water below. It was so peaceful here at night. She could be alone with her thoughts.

Or not. The sound of splashing water could be heard close by and as she stopped to really pay attention to her surroundings she could smell a brute not too far away. Daciana growled angrily. This was her favourite spot. Sure she couldn't prevent other pack members from coming here, but right now she had wanted to be alone. What made it even more frustrating was the fact that this wolf was familiar to her. A two year old male by the name of Afon. Childish, playful, had no concept of what really went on in the pack. A kind of happy go lucky kind of wolf. The worst kind. She wasn't in the mood to put up with any stupidity tonight, and as she walked down to the edge of the water, she sat staring at the falls and the sky, trying to ignore the brute, but knowing it would be impossible.

Afon

Quite content to paddle around with no thought to whom else was in the area; Afon spent a happy time splashing about in the lagoon. The water very effectively got the dirt and such from his fur and the young male greatly enjoyed snapped at twigs and leaves as they drifted past him. He had no worries of things that needed to be done or people who depended on him, the brute's actions usually only affected him and so rarely did anyone focus much on what he did. Movement in the dark caught the tawny wolf's attention and he paused in his play to have a look at what it was. Maybe it would be something to entertain him for the rest of the night, someone to share a game with perhaps?

Hm, perhaps that wouldn't be the way things would go. Still there was hope that maybe for once the fae would be a little more easy going. Afon knew of Daciana, but as an individual he couldn't say he'd had a lot to do with her. Most of what he knew about the fae were things that he had heard from other wolves, both his age and older. She had never made the effort to approach him personally, that he could remember, so Afon had never really troubled himself to think about her all that much. He had hoped she would give him a greeting of some kind, but apparently that was too much. Well, he had heard she was an angry individual. Still, Afon was hardly one to believe that anyone could be angry all the time. Maybe if he was lucky now would be the time that she wasn't angry.

Hauling himself out of the water Afon shook for a long time in an attempt to be as dry as possible. Swimming so he could claim cleanliness would be pointless if he then went wandering around soaking and getting covered in mud. Finally finished he looked over at the she-wolf before happily trotting over. Afon stopped and stood beside Daciana for a moment before plonking himself down at her side. Following her line of sight he looked at the water at the sky. Not being a wolf known for simply appreciating beauty of having particularly deep thought the young brute got bored quickly. The sky looked the same as it always did at night and there was nothing interesting going on with the water. Still the male tried, he tilted his head this way and that, trying to see what it was that could hold the fae's attention so.

"Daciana, what're we looking at?"

The sound of the rushing water was soothing and little my little, Daciana felt the pent up stress leaving her body. She sighed, feeling a little better, then settled a little more comfortably and started cleaning her fur. Well, it was normally fairly clean to begin with, but she was picky. Liked it smooth and without any blemishes. The fae could hear Afon as he got out of the water and lifted her head slightly and turned to face him for a moment, nodding once in acknowledgement. It was obvious that the brute had seen or smelled her by now. She wasn't doing much to hide and hiding would defeat the purpose of coming out here.

Returning her attention to the night sky, she sighed. She had to find some way of finding her place in the pack. Of making sure that Psi pups weren't treated with disdain simply because of who their parents were. She stayed and lived with them because she understood just how hard it was at their age. As an Iota it was hard for her to even get the attention of one of the older wolves. Becoming Epsilon was an impossible dream. She had to content herself with member status even if it felt like she was selling herself short. Daciana knew she was just as good of a Kappa as those in the Safeguard... but she would have to do two times as well to be noticed, then work ten times as hard to make any progress. When she was a pup, there were never any ex-Kappa Psis around to take care of her when she inevitably returned to the den hurt after getting in a fight with the some of the other pups in the pack. She hated that. It always felt like she was being punished just for existing.

Shaking the distressing thought away, she focused on the stars, the many constellations that she could see in the night sky. She drew imaginary lines between the stars, creating mental pictures of wolves, of rabbits, of owls, of bears. It was peaceful, innocent fun. Luckily for Afon, with her mind creating images in the heavens, she was less likely to snap at him when he came and sat down beside her.

"The stars, Afon," she replied softly, looking away from the heavens and the picture of the two wolves playing together against the inky backdrop of the night. "Sometimes it's just nice to sit and watch the sky. You can learn so much from what you see around you." This was probably going to go right over the brute's head. Philosophizing, thinking about what kinds of abstract messages can be found in every day things was not something she would ever find the male doing. If it was a chance to play and chase, then he would be the first in line. Daci allowed a small smile to touch the corner of her lips as she looked away. Maybe that was the reason he'd approached instead of staying away.

Changing the subject would probably get a better response from the wolf than if she continued speaking of the stars and the night. "Did you enjoy yourself in the water?" There. Something simple, that Afon wouldn't have too much difficulty responding to. Daciana knew that she had to find someway of becoming this wolf's 'friend' if she was to improve her relationship among pack members. If she was to make any progress, going through this brute might be easier than going through others. Be kind, friendly, try to stay calm. How hard could it be?
