Saya never wanted to be here. Being in the insanity was like being in a nightmare, without the relief of waking up. Every second felt like an hour of terror .. until Saya realized the absence of fear.
There was no panicked feeling when she awoke, there were no voices in her head. Perhaps, she was finally awake? But there was no lucky breaks, as Saya realized that there was one voice urgently calling in her head. He made a sound that vaguely referenced a loud desk clattering and falling, forcing the female hunter to awaken.
"ಠ益ಠ!!!"
Minutes later, one couldn't tell if Saya was tearing up from Prompto's telepathic berating or from wandering around the fog, physically alone. She clutched Prompto like a lifeline in one arm bent close to her chest, the other rubbing at her eyes. Be brave .. Be brave .. Saya's mentra as she took several hesitant steps forward, completely ready for anything.

Ryan had woken up before Saya. Completely alone without any of those he had teamed up with before. But at least he was in one piece and seemingly unharmed. Even that feeling of irritation and unexplained anger he was feeling before seemed to have vanished. Though the only problem now was... he had to find the others.
But how?
The first thing he tried was calling out. But really, after some careful consideration, the moon trainee thought better of it and kept his mouth shut. Using his eyes and ears instead. After all, the last thing he needed was to attract some unwanted attention. Because really, given where they were and what he had already seen, it was more than likely he would come across one of those creatures, rather than a hunter. Great.
Fortunately, after ignoring the lights and walking in a random direction through the fog and the greyed corridors he saw what appeared to be a familiar face.
"...Saya?" He started to call, taking a step further before he stopped. It looked like her, but he wasn't taking any chances.

Saya was on her most guarded manner, teal eyes traveling from left to right, repeatedly, to check all directions. She was heading towards the light, settling on the only point in the foggy horizon, when a voice seemed to reach and whisper from the fog behind her. She listened without identifying, at first, lightning reflexes suddenly arching her bow behind her to attack. Immediately, her weapon stood pointed to Ryan. It was only Prompto's voice that kept the arrow from shooting, the overwhelming voice in her head, shouting for her to stop. Cringing, Saya finally looked up to see a familiar bandaged face and blond hair.
"Ryan?"
Her hands shaking, she forced a smile.
"M-My mistake. I thought you were somebody .. else .."
She finished her sentence lamely, gesturing helplessly. But a thought occurred to her. A drastic and horrible thought, that maybe what relieved her the most was not actually relieving at all. The thought was horrifying, as Saya tentatively took a few steps forward.
"What if you are somebody else? What if the fog decided to impersonate people and you're a remnant of the fog trying to trick me?"
Saya looked like this upon the insightful realization: O Δ O !!
"Quick! 3 seconds, tell me something that happened between us that the fog doesnt know..?"
........

The moment Saya drew her bow on him, Ryan had his gauntlets summoned and ready to strike. The only thing that stopped him, however, was the fact that she didn't loose an arrow, despite her having one ready.
"Jeez..!" He breathed out the breath of air that he had been holding in. It was fortunate for the both of them, that both had clued in faster than they could attack, otherwise they could have done a number on themselves and he doubted that neither of them had any bandages. Not to mention, no Fear charges. To put it bluntly, they would have been screwed.
At least she's safe.
However... Though she was forcing a smile, she couldn't hide the fact that her hands were trembling the way they were. Clearly she had been through some rough time during--
"Pardon?" He blinked. Was she still considering that he was-- "Why would I want to tri--" He cursed, when she announced he had three seconds to answer. Quickly he began counting events off his fingers.
"Uhh you healed me back when we infiltrated that island... and Dakota flirted with you. We talked in sick bay after that mission, the time when you offered juice and uhhh..."
:The cookies! She let me have cookies! And there was Prompto there!: Locke chipped in helpfully.
"Of all the things, why would you bring up cookies, Locke?" He growled back at the weapon, making a 'tsk' sound.

Saya couldnt help but stifle a giggle, despite the heavy situation they were in. She tried to cover it up, unsuccessfully, with her palm, shaking her head with mirth.
"You're Ryan, that's for sure."
Insanity and fog could never imitate Locke, he was a little out of their depth and league for anyone to successfully imitate. Prompto agreed with the thought, fond memories of Locke and golems overtaking the moment. The break was brief when Saya was once again reminded by the cold creeping wisps of the fog, reminded that they had to move forward. In an effort to move in a stealthy manner, Saya silently signaled an arrow motion to a direction away from the light.
Along the way, Ryan might have noticed that she was clutching his scarf, just a tiny bit of the fringe between her fingers. Just so she didn't, you know, lose him.
She was also clutching it when the remains of a festival and it's inhabitants decided to encircle them, making the situation much more alarming. The trainee froze up, as a conversation they had never participated in, was thrown at Ryan and herself harshly. She was too scared to say otherwise, frozen eyes in Ryan's direction. She tried to shake her head, to reason that it was just insanity as it always was, that the figures in back were also results of insanty, that maybe it wouldn't do anything, but the words refused to come out.
... It was just insanity, wasn't it?

Ryan was relieved when she dismissed her doubts about him being real and not some replica made up by the haunted house. Though they weren't out of the woods yet. They needed to regroup with the others and find out what to do next. Because he certainly had no clue.
"Thanks for believing in me." He offered her a half smile and continued on. Though as they walked, he could feel a slight tug on his scarf. He didn't say anything, however, and simply carried on. If it helped her feel calm, then it was the least he could do.
This didn't change even by the time they arrived at the remains of the fright night festival. The moon trainee walked past several of the booths, eying each one curiously before the lone figure caused him to stop. Asking him questions like, why does he fight, if it was for them, and more. He ignored them of course, up until the figure accused him of stealing.
"The hell are you talking about? I didn't take anything from you. Hell, I don't even know you." He answered, insisting that he hadn't stolen anything and dismissing the figure's offer entirely.

Saya returned the smile, relieved that Ryan wasn't angry at her for doubting him and nearly shooting him. She was feeling a little guilty about it, she realized, as she trailed after his broad white back. Actually, she felt quite guilty about it but necessary precautions were necessary. She kept thinking repeatedly about how she should apologize but the apology never making it past her silent lips. Nervously, she trailed after him, her steps following his previous ones.
After Ryan's answer, Saya's weapon lifted in response to the raising of the scythe, both hands geared on her weapon---
---- But her weapon was still raised when the apparitions were finished with them. Her weapon lowered and dropped to the ground, she felt the feeling go out of her knees. She tried to tell herself that she needed to be tougher but her legs refused to stand in the heat of the moment. Saya's hand reaching back for the end of Ryan's scarf. Something happened .. although Saya couldn't reach a conclusion based on the shaky experience. But the scythe did raise and slash through Ryan, right?
"Ryan, are you .. Were you hit? OДO"
Her eyes were widened with panic, although she didn't see anything .. Maybe she just didn't see anything yet. Wounds were slow to bleed sometimes, after all. As she was kneeling, her other hand reaching out for Prompto .. and her fingers landing on something else entirely, with an alarming realization that it was rather wet and sticky.

Ryan cursed as the figure raised their weapon. He moved to block it with his gauntlets, but despite his efforts the scythe came down in one smooth arch and--
Gone?
The figure was gone. But now he was surrounded by fog.
"I... I don't know." He answered honestly, looking himself over. "I mean, it looked like he had but..." No wound. There was no sign that the figure had even touched him. But it didn't feel right.
There was little time to ponder over if he had been hit or not, because shortly after, he was sinking to his knees. On top of that his hands were coated with a warm, dark, and sticky substance. Realizing what it was, the moon trainee felt his stomach lurch.
Blood.
Now, blood never made him queasy. But when it came from an unknown source, especially when that source could have been him, it didn't sit too well with him. Had he been cut after all? No... It wasn't his. Their form was concealed by the fog, but something--someone was there and they were gravely injured.
"Not me!" He announced, in hopes of putting a stop to Saya's sudden rise of panic. "There's someone here--they're hurt," He cursed again, examining the wound along their side. "badly!" Whatever had caused this, it was clear that it was aiming to kill and if that wound wasn't treated soon, that's exactly what would happen.
"s**t umm.. hold on a sec!" He immediately pressed one hand against the wound, applying pressure to stop the blood from seeping out and used the other to dig out whatever gauze pads he had on him. Once he had them, he used both hands to press firmly over both the gauze and the wound. But it wouldn't be enough. He doubted he would even succeed in stopping the bleeding. Considering the wound was too great and these weren't even runic bandages.
"Saya can you grab the uhh--" His head was spinning, trying to figure what he could do next. It was his job for Pete's sake! And yet, he couldn't for the life of him, think of what to do next! Regardless of the bandages and the pressure applied, the blood continued to seep through.
A few seconds later, after a weak, 'thank you' and the figure was still. Just like that, they died. He failed them and they died. It didn't help to ease his conscience when the fog rose, revealing the victim to be an enemy. The bottom line was, he failed to keep his patient alive.

At least it wasn't Ryan. It wasn't Ryan-- that fact was easier to take in, when she realized he was standing beside the injured body. She could see the effort in his eyes, how much the other moon hunter was trying to save the body in front of them. The question of identity never crossed her mind, her focus redirected to other matters, following Ryan's lead. But even she could see, without a runic bandage on them .. Saya was forced to accept the inevitable before Ryan heard the whisper of gratitude. His command was never answered, one hand covering Saya's mouth to keep the emotion in her throat from welling up.
Kneeling next to Ryan, her hand briefly shielded the pale corpse's expression, her palm brushing their eyes closed. It was a halloweener but that didn't matter. It was respectful, to both sides, in the aftereffects of the battlefield.
Saya untied her sash, her fingers wrapping around Ryan's bloodied ones. She refused to let go, struggling to wipe his hands with the teal material, fervently shaking her head. It wasn't Ryan's fault but the guilt wasn't any less. It was difficult to talk, to find the words.. because emotion did not always go hand in hand with the power of speech. How could she express what she wanted to say, the argument in her head was an agonizing one. Her hand lifted to brush her fingers against his shoulder, to capture his attention.
".. U-um .. thank you Ryan for finding me. Thank you for trying to save a life .. and thank you for trying to rescue them, regardless of who it was."
She continued nervously, her hands fidgety.
"We didn't make it in time .. but we made it on time enough so that it wasn't either of us on the ground."
As she spoke, a scent floated through the area. There was talking behind them and the voice sounded vaguely familiar.

Ryan hadn't said a word and instead had kept his attention on the lifeless corpse. In a way he had been hoping it was one of those undead types and would just sort of get up again. But there was no movement at all.
There was a little comfort in Saya's gesture, however, and she was rewarded with s small file.
"Little good its done. We're still trapped here and I we still haven't found anyone. But thanks, I appreciate it." He was glad that despite all the failures of today, he was at least able to do one thing right.
"Come on," He got to his feet, pulling her gently to her feet as well. "Lets go."
He could hear the noise too. As well as the scent. But when they got there the shape of the figure and the all too familiar setting had him back stepping and fast.
Julie!?
But... Julie was... Julie was dead! They had ended her life in the desert when those bugs had--had...
"I feel ill." He muttered under his breath. Just seeing her here now was bringing back all sorts of bad memories of that awful time. She was even greeting them like she always did.
Swallowing hard, he shook his head to clear it. "Lets just play along and hope it doesn't try and kill us." He finally whispered to Saya. There was no possible way this was Julie. There was however, a good chance that it--whatever it was, was hostile.
Hesitantly he grabbed the fish looking one and tossed it in, cringing back when the figure grinned at him, talking.
Not real. It wasn't real!
However, they only had to endure for a little longer, because a moment later everything was fading to white.

This was Julie. It was hard to forget such a distinct hunter, especially one that had been a part of her division before. It was regrettable, how little she saw of the late hunter but it didn't take much to see how much more it hurt for Ryan.
But if that was how her voice had sounded like, it was such a sweet voice. She heard it several times before but the jarring figure in front of them forced those memories to resurface, surely to be forgotten again. Saya followed Ryan's lead, picking up the bottle of grey liquid after him.
Later on, she would reflect on the fact that Julie had a really nice laugh.
It was too bad the sensation ended as quickly as it did, the image of the abrupt door in front of her ruining the scenery as quickly as it had appeared. Everything else was white, even Ryan wasn't there. Was it like one of those scenes where you had to brave it alone?
It seemed like such an impossible task. Saya was sure she wouldn't be able to but it happened regardless, everything around her was hinging on this door.
Regardless, her first instinct when one's partner disappeared ..
"R-Ryan?"

"Saya!" He called, turning just as his vision was completely engulfed by white, causing panic to race through his mind. What if the two of them became separated again? The idea of being stuck in this place along again was unfavorable. But the idea of leaving Saya, who had been terrified moments before, on her own was unforgivable.
"Saya!" He called again, yelling louder and a little more desperately. Though when things cleared, not only was he alone, but he was standing in front of a massive door.
A door to what though?
"Saya?" He repeated. This time a little hesitantly as he looked around, in hopes of spotting the blonde. Still nothing. Had she already gone ahead?
Taking in a breath, the moon trainee pulled his scarf in closer in around his face. He was about to reach for the doorknob when something seized it.
"Saya?" He repeated, a little shocked, but soon realized that the hand didn't belong to Saya. Then who--
"Kyle!?" There was a mix of panic and shock as he turned to face his cousin. His cousin! What--how was he here? That was impossible! And yet, his appearance and even the voice had an uncanny resemblance. Could it really be--
"Don't go. Please. There's still another way. You don't have to do this!"
Ryan hesitated, looking from his cousin, to the door, and back to his cousin again. "But I--what about Saya? She might have already gone ahead." He started and ended up looking at his feet. Did Kyle know something he didn't? Was there something up ahead--no. No! This was crazy! This was just another side effect of this damned place! Julie was dead, just as his cousin was dead! But even still--
"I am not going." He finally answered, still staring at his feet. To be honest, the more he thought about it, running off through a large mysterious door sounded like a bad idea. However as soon as he had his answer, Ryan felt 'Kyle's' grip he had on him tighten. "Then you'll stay with me?"
"No," He started, trying to tug his arm back." I'm waiting for my friend, who is probably dealing with the same bullshit right now. Not for you." He finished firmly, and twisted his wrist to free himself. But to his surprise, not only did 'Kyle's' grip remain strong, it tightened.
There was a brief moment of silence. Which was quickly followed by a possessive hiss. "You will stay with me!"
No choice. Ryan felt something tighten, then... and then everything vanished.

".. Ryan?!" As Ryan thought, the trainee was scared out of her mind. She kneeled down, hugging her knees to her chest. There was nothing else but white, no matter where she looked. There was the door but was Ryan on the other side?
"... Ryan?"
Timidly, she rearranged her sash onto her lap, folding and unfolding over and over. Maybe she should go through that door ..
"Who's Ryan?"
The all-too-familiar voice behind her asked with a husky chuckle, as if he had recently swallowed some whiskey. He always sounded like that, one of the parts Saya appreciated most. She never thought she would hear that voice again .. And really, she shouldn't have. But this insanity had brought back Miss Julie and now it brought back her guardian. It was hard, to force herself from turning around, to see the person she wanted to see most. It was heartbreakingly nostalgic, to hear their voices once again.
"Um, he's a friend! We were at this door and ..did you see him, did he go ahead?" She looked around frantically, silencing once arms wrapped around her from the back. It couldn't be him, it really couldn't be. Emotion welled up in her throat once more, thoughts of her guardian and thoughts of concern about Ryan colliding. She hesitated, stopping before the door. A rushed moment of silence as Saya's shoulders tried to relax but her posture remained tense.
"U-Um .." "Don't go. Please. There's still another way. You don't have to do this." The whisper was frighteningly quiet, although nostalgic. Saya wanted to hear it again, she always wanted to. But she couldn't stay in a dream. She couldn't heed that warning if it meant that her friend was beyond that door.
She would rather be awake than dream in impossible realities.
"Please let me go."
"..."
Then, there was that dreadful silence all over again. She curled up once more, her face buried in her knees. She hated that silence the most, the kind of silence that meant everybody had left. Even Prompto, for personal reasons or due to insanity, still didn't reply.
....
........
She said the words she most wanted to say:
"Please come back. Somebody, anybody, please come back. Ill come there too, if you're there."
