AutumnWaves shivered and fluffed up his fur against the chilly morning air as he emerged from the warriors den. Early Leafbare was definitely not his favorite time of year. He much preferred the sweet-scented winds of Newleaf or the warm caress of the sun during Greenleaf. After acclimating to the cold he headed for the group of fellow warriors who had gathered waiting patrol assignments. He sat down and curled his tail over his paws his grey eyes gleaming in the morning light.

Once his name was called he rose to his paws and looked around for whom he was paired with. The she-cat HeartTrail. He didn't know her very well, or at least, not as more than a clanmate. They had never really talked before and he was intrigued by the chance of getting to know her better. Of course, they were supposed to be out on a border patrol but that didn't mean they couldn't talk and get to know more about each-other, he believed that it was very important to know all of your clanmates well. It would serve the clan better in times of need, and now just happened to be one of those times. Prey wasn't running very well and every cat was feeling the pains of hunger. Not to mention that Shadowclan had been straying over the border but had yet to be caught in the act.

As he caught sight of her grey and orange fur AutumnWaves made his way toward her and offered up a friendly greeting. "Good morning HeartTrail." His tail flicked behind him casually as he waited to see if she would take the lead on the patrol or not.

It was cold. HeartTrail stared at the frost covering the ground in front of her. There was a set frown covering her face. Her ears were pinned back to her head. She woke up early and now she was doing a dawn border patrol. And her friends were on a different patrol. She sighed... maybe it was just her out look... at least now she could scope out the border... even though shadowclan had been crossing over... They weren't going to send her patrol that way. She had only 1 other cat coming with her...So they got Riverclan border... She twitched her ears. Great... they could see just how high the water was.

Her ears perked at a voice calling to her. Even though she really disliked LeafBare... she wouldn't just pout the whole time. She smiled."Hey AutumnWaves." She was loath to move her tail from her paws... but she would have to... Doing it quick she shook herself. "Ready to check out Riverclan?" She smiled... "Maybe we will see one of them shivering more then us." She knew they would fish right through leafbare... the waterfall kept the water from freezing... she it was a good source of food... even though thunderclan wasn't know for their fishing skills... they could most the time manage... that is... if they wanted to get drenched. And today... she didn't.

Flicking her tail she nodded. "Lets go ok... " She was only a month out of apprenticeship, so she wasn't one to take the lead... however, she wasn't going to be walked on either.

He was glad to see that she appeared just as cold as he was himself and not looking all to happy about it. At least that was one thing they had in common, a dislike for cold weather. Though AutumnWaves would have preferred taking the Shadowclan border on his patrol he knew that HeartTrail was a young warrior and that with only two cats it was best to check out Riverclan instead. He tried to be optimistic, something exciting could happen and they might actually have something to report when they got back.

"I'm ready for anything, you never know what might happen this time of year." He smiled mischievously, he was older than she was but that didn't mean he didn't know how to have fun. He had been known to play a trick a time or two but he wasn't sure now was the time, at least not on his own clanmate. "Perhaps we can startle one who is fishing and watch them fall in the river they love so much." The image made him mrrow in amusement.

With a affirmative nod at her suggestion he set off towards the entrance to camp and made a beeline, once on the other side, for the Riverclan border. The forest was littered with dead leaves and a cool breeze whipped through the bare tree limbs above him. He shivered again and his ears flattened against the cold. "It's a shame it can't be Newleaf or Greenleaf all year round." he mused as they walked.

She nodded at his statement. Twitching her tail carefully, she walked along the cliff face as they headed toward the river. Her ears twitched in amusement as he mentioned startling a cat into the water. "Sounds like a fun plan to me." She could say honestly she hated the water... She had fallen in as an apprentice by trying to catch a fish. Though prey was still running, it was getting harder to find... and she had a bad feeling they would be fishing long before newleaf.

HeartTrail fluffed up her fur slightly. The cold breeze was cutting straight through to her skin. With a slight skip in her step she came shoulder to shoulder with the older tom, trying to steal his warmth while sharing her own. She sighed. She had just found a warm spot. "Yeah...it is... but admit it... even though its cold, don't you love playing in the snow?" She could barely remember the snow since she was born in the very end of the last leafbare. But she remembered playing with her brother in the cold white fluff.

An amused grin crossed his face as HeartTrail agreed that his prank sounded like a fun idea. He was glad to find that she was still up for playing games and tricks despite being a warrior now. It was a shame when cats suddenly became all work and no play once they received their warrior names. What good was life if you couldn't have any fun?

As she mentioned snow AutumnWaves sighed wistfully. "The snow is one thing that makes leafbare tolerable. It is fun to play in and makes training sessions much more interesting. I still think it's a shame that it can't snow and be warm at the same time though. It would be much more pleasant if that was possible." The sound of running water reached him and he slowed, peering through a gap in the trees at the river running between the territories of his clan and Riverclan. He didn't see any cats but that didn't mean there weren't any further along the bank.

A sidelong glance was given to his partner before he raised his head and tail. He put aside the frigid wind and refused to shiver from the cold as he made his way down towards the water's edge. He was determined to look as intimidating and well fed as possible in case there were any rival warriors to be found.

HeartTrail thought about her answer for a moment. Maybe thats not what a warrior would say. She was still too childish. She flicked her ears in minor discomfort but moved on. It was true... she liked snow.

HeartTrail's ears perked as he mentioned he liked snow as well. She nodded along while he gave the positives to snow. And then he proposed an idea. She frowned and considered it..."Why can't it?" She pondered... "Lets save up a bunch of snow this year and when all the other now melt... then we pull out the new stuff!" She twitched her tail.

When They reached the tree edge she flattened down to poke her head out. She didn't see anyone. And then AutumnWaves moved. She fluffed her self up and frowned. IT was soo cold. She sighed and trotted down to meet up with AutumnWaves. She glanced at the river and the swirling water. She glanced the opposite bank before trotting up to the water to take a drink.

A shiver ran down his spine as AutumnWaves joined his clanmate at the river's edge and took a drink of the near-freezing water. He didn't see any Riverclan cats and that made him wonder if they still had prey running in their territory and didn't need to fish, or if the patrol just hadn't felt up to fishing in the cold water. Either way he didn't mind much because that gave him the opportunity to try to snag some fish to take back to camp. True, he was on a border patrol, but in times like these, any freshkill was welcome regardless of who brought it and when.

He eyed HeartTrail thoughtfully after he finished mulling over her idea of hoarding the snow for Greenleaf. "I'm not sure it would work... the snow idea... even if we could manage to keep some frozen until after the rest melted, once it was exposed I think it would melt rather quickly in the warmer temperature. We could give it a shot anyway though, I don't think any cat has tried it before so no cat would know for sure if it would work or not.

Just as he finished speaking AutumnWaves saw the shadowy figure of a fish swimming lazily just beneath the surface and quick as lightning his paw shot into the icy water, claws unsheathed, and darted back out just as quickly with a flopping fish attached with squirmed it's way off his paw and onto the bank. With a quick bite to it's back he snapped it's spine and the flopping ceased. "Well, someone will have some dinner tonight." he mentioned with a grin to his clanmate.

He had been told stories of his ancestors and how many of them had been Riverclan cats. It was no surprise that swimming and fishing came naturally to him but he often wondered about how his clanmates felt about him being more adept at a Riverclan lifestyle than the rest of them were.
