They needed food.

Things had been scarce for a while, but now, now it was reaching dangerous. Especially with the new kits that had just recently joined their clan. If they couldn't find some food, it was likely that things would quickly turn bad, and if there was anything that she could do, Sandstalker was going to do it.

"Alright you lot," the sand colored female announced, her eyes glancing over her fellow warriors. She didn't know how many of them would be willing to follow her, but she had to try. "I need some volunteers for a hunting party. We need food, badly, and anyone who comes with me had better be prepared. We will not be returning without bringing back prey."

If no one volunteered, so be it. She would go on her own.

Icefang sat in the small group of warriors. His fur was fluffed against the growing cold- it was Leafbare and he was growing tired of these long hunts for not enough food. Of course, the other option was to go hungry.

He rose to his paws and yowled in response, "I will hunt with you, Sandstalker! I do not fear leafbare to refuse to leave the comfort of my den to serve the clan." His eyes examined the other warriors. Most were as tired as he was, but he knew they had energy in them yet to provide for the clan.

Padding through the other cats, he turned and sat next to Sandstalker, daring the others to join them.

Hollowkit's ears pricked as voices rose outside the nursery. With some effort she opened her eyes and gave a glance to check on her mother and siblings she noted they were slumbering peacefully. Rising to her paws, still groggy from sleep, she arched her back in a stretch and then carefully picked her way over her family to the entrance of the nursery. Peering outside she noted that there was a small cluster of warriors, most of whom she didn't yet recognize, gathered in the center of camp and it seemed they were discussing something serious.

She couldn't quite make out what was being said and her curiosity was overwhelming. Picking up her paws and placing them carefully so as not to crunch any of the leaves that littered the ground she stuck to the shadows as she made her way closer to the gathering. Once she was within earshot she stopped and listened. It seemed that one of the warriors, SandStalker if she recalled correctly, was trying to organize a hunting patrol. She knew that a few of the warriors who brought food to her family in the nursery had mentioned that prey wasn't running well and Hollowkit now saw a chance to help her clan. Kit or not, she was almost old enough to be made an apprentice and she was determined to help her clan in this time of need.

A cool breeze whipped through the camp and Hollowkit fluffed up her fur against the chill. For a brief moment she considered heading back into the warmth of the nursery but that thought was gone as soon as it came. She crouched down in the shadow of the nursery waited, biding her time until the patrol left. Once they headed out she would figure out a way to join them, but she knew if she showed herself now they would never agree to let her come with them. To the clan she was still just a kit, but to herself, Hollowkit was already a warrior and her sense of duty to her clan was burning hot.

((Raven, do you mind if Hollowkit knows SandStalker? I thought maybe she has come to the nursery to drop off kill and perhaps is a friend of Hollowkit's mother?))

((That's fine with me, Rian.)) ((If anyone else from Shadowclan wants to join, feel free too, just post like they volunteered and have been there the whole time.))

She hadn't expected many to volunteer, and she was pleased when Icefang declared that he would be joining her. "Thank you, Icefang." He was a strong warrior, and an asset for this hunt.

"We shall head towards the border to start with, towards Windclan territory, and then will go from there." It was always a good idea to remark their territory, and since she was hoping to find rabbits up there, ones that had crossed the border into their territory, it would serve two purposes.

She stood up,her tail twitching. "Are you ready?" She was. The sooner they could leave, the sooner they could get back. It was already going to be a long trip, and there was no sense in delaying any longer.

Redhawk stirred as he heard activity outside the warriors' den. He yawned, blinking sleep out if his eyes and poked his head outside to see what was going on. Immediately his ears flattened in embarrassment as he realized it was already midday. Would he ever learn not to oversleep, especially when the clan so badly needed food?

Stomach grumbling, he padded closer to the group, and was able to catch Sandstalker's words. It seemed to be a hunting group, a perfect opportunity for Redhawk to make up for all the sleeping he had been doing. It also beat sitting around in camp all day, staring at an empty food pile.

"I'm ready!" he called eagerly. "Hopefully we won't run into any of those hare-brained WindClanners. I swear, some of them flit around so quick I sometimes mistake them for rabbits."

"Count me in, too!" Nightsong called out to the forming group, jumping to her paws. There was no way she was going to simply sit around and do absolutely nothing while her clan starved, regardless on how poor their chances were for finding food. Any cat would know that any amount of energy spend searching for food was a significantly higher chance of finding food without bothering to look for it. Besides, she was as loyal to the clan as any other cat, if not more, and was more than willing to do anything she could to support it. Besides, the patrol needed her skills! She had the genes of a leader flowing within her blood, and she was damn proud of that.

"Even if we do see some of those air-headed felines, they'll probably just run away. They simply mimic the prey that they eat, mice and rabbits, both meek and timid creatures," she responded to Redhawk with a scoff, rolling her eyes at the thought. They loved to talk tough, that clan! But could scarcely back themselves up with their weak hearts.

Icefang nodded in appreciation of the cats who were volunteering. They were all strong warriors. Their group seemed to be strong now with the four of them. Even if others did not join them later, they would be sure to find a number of prey among their group.

"I am prepared whenever you are, Sandstalker," he mewled in response. He rose to his feet and stretched his lean figure in anticipation. The sooner they began, the sooner they would all eat.

"Nightsong, Redhawk, thank you for joining us." The pair of cats were a welcome addition to the hunting team, and Sandstalker felt as if this might just be a successful trip after all. "Just remember, if you do start something with a Windclanner, that you're clearly on our side of the border."

She chuckled wryly. No sense in giving those Windclanners anything else to gripe about. "Come on, let's get going." It was going to be a long trip.

The sand female started off in the direction of the border, glancing back only once to make sure that the rest were following. She trusted that they would, every warrior did routine hunts like this, and while she hadn't picked the team in specific, each of the volunteers were warriors with talents that would be useful on this trip.

Icefang followed a few taillengths behind the hunt's leader. He dare not interfere with her command, regardless that they were all warriors. He kept a sharp eye about, casting around for any signs of fresh prey. "There haven't been any fox or badgers around lately to steal our freshkill, have there?" he questioned in a soft purr. It would be disappointing and a waste of the clan's time to be looking for prey in an area watched over by a troublesome creature.

His blue eyes were sharp and quick, intending to find any rat, mouse, or vole that dared twitch under a leaf.

Redhawk chuckled in response to Nightsong, then turned his attention to Sandstalker.

"I know, I know," he sighed with a smile and stretched before following the group out of the camp. As much fun as it would be to harass a few enemy cats, what mattered right now was finding prey. Redhawk just hoped his grumbling belly wouldn't frighten away any potential food.

"No, I doubt foxes and badgers would be dumb enough to hunt where there's no prey," he responded to Icefang, grinning. Only we are dumb enough to hunt where there's no prey. Then he kept his head down and his ears pricked as he stalked through the territory, keeping an eye out for any sign of movement. All was still in the swamp, and Redhawk thought it would've been peaceful, perfect for an afternoon nap had it not been for the dire lack of freshkill situation.

Hollowkit's paws twitched with anticipation as more warriors gathered and the group finally headed out of camp. Checking over her shoulder once more at the nursery entrance to ensure none of her family had come looking for her she set off after them sticking close to the shadows.

She was lucky that she had been born with a dark pelt unlike her sister PetalKit who was what their mother called an "albino". It made these sorts of adventures much easier on her that she was able to hide in the dark places and blend in.

Being sure to keep quiet and stay out of sight the young kit followed the patrol through the swamp that was the majority of Shadowclan territory. All the new sights and smells were intriguing but HollowKit had no desire to get lost out here so she made sure to keep up with the patrol. Always keeping at least one of them in her line of sight.

But with the way the prey is running, or lack thereof, I would welcome the sight of a fox or a badger. If we can take one down, that's plenty of food to eat for those who need it the most," she stated practically. Sure, those two creatures were some of their toughest enemies, but they could possibly have a chance to catch one off on its own if they fought it in their large group. These warriors may be hungry, but they were still plenty powerful. And for a brief moment, Nightsong began to wonder how they would taste. Probably very stringy and tough, she thought simply to herself.

But for now she followed silently behind Sandstalker, falling into place besides Redhawk. No cat walked too fast, both conserving their energies and making sure no blade of grass went unturned for a scent of prey or a threat. The chill in the air caused her to shiver briefly as a breeze pushed its way against her heavily. But she shrugged it off just as quickly as it appeared, of course.

Icefang closed his eyes, imagining the fight and hunt of a badger. It would be tough and honorable, especially if he were the one to strike the deathblow. "Well we'll have to see what we can find," he added before he, too, fell silent.

He began to branch out from the group, staying farther behind and to the side. If they separated, there might be a better chance of finding prey. His nose sniffing the air, Icefang thought he smelt something different in the air. Turning his head, he found it was behind them. Curious, the tom moved into a patch of briars and waited, watching to see if it was anything at all.

She had to agree with that, even a badger or a fox would be useful now, even if they weren't traditional prey, but even they had seemed to have vanished for the moment. There were still frogs, occasionally, in the swamp, and if this didn't pan out, that was where they would probably head next.

They were moving faster than she had hoped, though she hadn't scented or seen any signs of prey. She didn't know if that was because there were so many of them passing through, or if it was that the prey had left for better places. Either was possible, and she decided that perhaps it would be a good idea for them to split up once they reached the border.

Not only would that allow them to cover more territory, it might also let them remain slightly more unnoticed. "
Do either of you have an issue with splitting up when we get to the border?
" she asked both Redhawk and Nightsong. She knew that Icefang wouldn't, in fact he had already started, but she worked with these two so rarely that she wasn't sure about them.

Froreember, unlike some of his clanmates, was born for this kind of weather. His pelt was thick and insulating and his fur helped muffle any movement that might otherwise alert prey or enemies. As such, he was one of the warriors best suited for action in the harsh conditions of the season that were only growing harsher. None of his clan was well fed at this point, but considering the circumstances, he was well off.

Some might curse their heritage should they have shared his, but he foudn it fascinating. The lingering wisps of legends and stories of his ancestors, the cats of StarClan watching over them. It was fascinating.

Speculation of the past was not his purpose for being out and about however. Since sunup he had been roaming the territory, mostly the WindClan border end, catching whatever came his way. No rabbits had strayed over the border, yet he was patient. He checked back every so often, scanning the moorland just beyond for any sign of a possible kill coming close. Otherwise, he had found a toad and a runaway rat, but the toad was thin and the rat, well, a rat. He had covered them separately, still deciding on the wisdom of keeping the mangy creature, but he was erring on the side of caution, planning to rid himself of the carcass soon. The flea-bitten vermin were carriers if pestilence and disease, something ShadowClan could not risk, especially this season.

Pausing to scent the air one last time before heading back towards the border to stand watch for a while, again hoping for something he could take back to his clan, he picked up traces of cat. Upwind of him. Flicking his tail once in consideration, he started towards the patrol (he guessed it was, he scented at least four cats, he thought). Perhaps some hunting assistance? Although, the area didn't seem to be yielding much today.
