Freyja was free. She came to me in the most odd fashion you could think of because my fiance was dead set agianst me having a cat because of our allergies. He called me up one day when he was at work and asked "Would...it be bad to have a female cat?" Me: "No, not really. They dont spray as much, but theryre a little more indepen-OMG YOUR BRINGING ME HOME A KITTY!" Him: "Eh....no?" The liar. So I quickly got ready to go and heard him pull up and dashed out to his truck. He informed me that she had gotten wedged underneath the back seat on the ride over and his hands were too big to fit. So I scrambled back there, heard her cries and gingerly got her loose. Lo and behold, it was love at first sight. She had me with her spots and stripes and her large yellow eyes and bobcat apperance. I havent been able to get over her cute since. whee Shes been alot in her first year with me, as I have gone through alot as well, but we have adjusted. smile No matter what happens, shell always be my little Squish. And the moral of the story is that even the most adamant of men who dont want a cat will one day cave to some tufted ears.

When I got my house a year ago I made the decision that after the new year, once I was settled and all, I'd look into adopting a cat. I knew I wanted a young adult; not a kitten, not really a senior (though they were an option), and not a medically-needy (first time cat owner, I wasn't ready for that). I also knew I wanted a female, calico or tortoiseshell, preferably; I've only ever really owned female animals (my fish was a male) and they're what I'm most drawn towards. Thus, the 'watching shelter/rescue pages' part of searching for a cat began in December-ish (I wasn't going to rush into adopting the first cute face I found, and living an hour from the shelters/rescues I couldn't really be checking weekly in person). Early January I was doing some new-job training in the city so I decided while I was there to start gathering kitty supplies (litter box, toys, food supplies, etc..) because I was serious about getting a cat and wanted to be ready when I found the one I wanted. So far, nothing had given me that "OMG that's the one!" feeling, though there'd been a few I was kind of interested in. As I searched, though, I found myself being drawn more towards medium/long-haired ones instead of short-haired, which was I think what I was initially looking for, since if you don't know a whole lot about cat care you'd think they'd be less grooming maintenance. Fast forward a month to February, and this stunning torti was listed on one of the rescue's pages. As soon as I saw her picture I sent them an email asking for more information about her and to set up an appointment to meet/potentially adopt. Few days later or the next day or something I went to the city to meet her and fell in love. She's been mine since.
She was an absolute chicken, terrified of damn near everything, for the first approximately month, but now? Zoe is (or "should be" ) her BFF; she'll pretend/try to maul Bella when she goes running by; the door and outside is something that maybe we're curious about; she trusts that I won't step on her, and when I do it doesn't phase her; I can pick her up and hug and squishy love her; etc.. The only thing she still really runs from is company, and even then - she doesn't hide when mum comes over, she'll come out if somebody's here for an extended length of time, and the last time my sil was over she just went to the top platform of her tree in my room rather than under the bed/in the hidy-hole spot of the tree.
When I brought her home:

My fiance (bf at the time) and I moved in together this past June. Once fall rolled around, I had reeeeally been wishing we could have a cat. He grew up with them; I had never had one before, but I love them. I was pretty sure our landlord wouldn't let us get one, though (he's a nice guy--just concerned about damages and allergens for future tenants).
Anyway, so come September/October, my fiance was talking with him and managed to convince him to let us have one. I vowed to be responsible for any damages, to clean like a madwoman if we were to ever move out, etc etc. I was ecstatic.
So, one weekend, while my fiance was at work, I asked my Mom to tag along with me to check out a nearby shelter called Animalkind. My fiance and I had narrowed down what we wanted to this: a cat that was still young, preferably still a kitten but old enough to have been spayed or neutered. And we kind of mutually agreed that we didn't really want a long-haired cat, because FUR EVERYWHERE.
When we got there, the first thing they did was try and convince me to adopt two cats instead of one. That kind of put me off, because I told them "Sorry, my landlord is only letting us get one" but they were still insistent--"You should talk to him, see if he'll change his mind!" I understand why they wanted to push for more cats to be adopted--they had a fire the spring before and were operating at a temporary location with limited space--but I just couldn't take two at once (not to mention this was my first cat, so I think one would suffice).
Anyway. The first cat they handed me was a little fluffy kitten, kind of dark tortoiseshell coloring. But she was visibly scared and shaking. I felt bad, but I was afraid to get a cat that may just run under the bed and stay there. I asked to see another.
That's when they handed me Monti. About a year old, he just laid back in my arms and looked around. Completely chill, relaxed, quiet. I fell in love. I texted my fiance because he was on his lunch break, sent him a picture and said "This one!" He called and said "Are you sure that's the one you want?" "Yes!! He's so cute! And so calm and chill! I love him omg." "Okay, then we can get him."
My fiance had wanted to visit the shelter with me to pick one out, but our work schedules never matched up right and as soon as we got permission to have one, I wanted to go and adopt one. So, after filling out the paperwork and giving the shelter all my info, I was told "Well, we usually wait a day or two before you can take the cat home... But, you seem nice and trustworthy. You can have him today!"
Unfortunately I wasn't quite prepared, as we didn't know how young of a kitten we may be getting and I didn't expect to bring one home that day. So my Mom and I had to run back to town and get a litterbox, litter, food, feeding dishes and toys before rushing back to the shelter before it closed for the day. I hadn't picked up a carrier but they let me keep one of theirs, and we took him home and the rest is history~ (Sorry this was so long!)

emotion_kirakira So handsome. Thats kinda what happened with Loki. My fiance HATED cats and was adamant against them and he brought me home Freyers. Then after we moved to our apt, and discussed getting Freyja a friend, we decided we needed to adopt our big fluffy male. (I always wanted a boy cat). so we went to the shelter looking for one I had seen on petfinder and found him instead. biggrin Instantly it was love at first sight, same age as our girly, and as soon as they put him in my arms, he gave me a big kitty hug and didnt want to go back. I was allowed to take him home that day, as he had JUST gotten out of the holding (he was recovering from some injuries) that day and they didnt want me to change my mind. XD Its funny because my man picked out Freyjers and she is personally my little fluffy bottomed princess, and I picked out Loki and hes more like my fiance. I converted him. XD Both of my Misters. :3

When we got there, the first thing they did was try and convince me to adopt two cats instead of one. Personally, I find that my medium-long-haired cat doesn't shed nearly as much as pretty much any short-hairs I've been around. It might just be because of diet, but even my brother's cat, eating Acana and whatever the neighbours feed her, doesn't have nearly as nice a coat and I think sheds more (I don't spend much time around her) than my Saphi.
The two cats thing is fairly valid, and not just because of limited space - two cats tend to be less destructive to the home than one, because they beat up each other instead of the house (obviously depends on the cats). I definitely understand your side of it, though - the thought of two cats right off the bat as a first-time cat owner is just too much to handle in my opinion.

At the time I was still very active cat rescuer (now that I work full time there is no more space for this activity crying ), and I got a tip that on one of my fellowes vacation home stations there is a barbarian who poisons the strays because he wants to bread pidgeons, and police won't do anything about that, because it's "just some stupid cats not even pet ones"... So my fellow caught as many as he could and relocated them with people who could take care of them for the time beeing... There was not much hope to catch the adult wild cats, but he got quite a lot of kittens, and Zygmunt was one of them... His siblings ended up with my family members, and the other ones also found good homes... Of course if there was some way to just stop that [censored] neighbour we would live them were they belonged which is wild and free, but the [censored] apparently had some deals with local authorities stressed ...

D'aww, that's sweet. 4laugh Yeah I had tried checking the cats out online beforehand, too, but I couldn't tell if the site I was on was recently updated, and obviously you can't really get a good idea of how different cats behave without at least meeting them first. I was surprised to learn that Monti had been at the shelter for almost three months when I got him. I felt super lucky, like he was hiding from everyone else and I just happened to have him handed to me. He's such a sweetheart, though, and so laid back. I couldn't believe no one else had wanted him. But, the ladies at the shelter said that everyone wants kittens, and he was about a year old so that's probably why people weren't interested in him. sad Poor guy. But, if that hadn't been the case we wouldn't have him, so I still consider us lucky!

Monti definitely sheds a lot, but thankfully his hair blends in with most of our apartment haha, except for my black clothes. P: I never thought about that. I didn't realize that was even a thing lol. But yeah, two would have been a bit overwhelming for a first-timer like me. xD
