It was relatively late when Arian finally left school for the day. Although the dark-haired teen usually left earlier on Mondays, his usual Friday track practice had been switched to Monday after the team coach had called in sick with some sort of bug. Arian had opted to toss a sweater over his running top and switch the shorts for the track suit bottoms in his ruck sack. It was cooler now in the evenings and the dark-haired teen wasn’t really in the mood to jog home. The corridors were mostly empty, classes over for the day, although there were still some students around and not just those from those who’d stayed after school to run track. Gabe had stayed after for Astronomy Club that Monday. It was his preferred after school activity, all things considered, and the only one he actively participated in. He was, however, considering taking up sports, considering his, er, other evening pursuit.
Normally, he would be on his way home right after. However, this afternoon he was on a mission. The local MUFON branch was looking rather empty, and so he was spending a bit of time slapping up posters. Always good to at least attempt to attract new members.

Waving to one of his fellow runners on the track team, Arian noticed an auburn-haired teen in the process of putting up a poster on the wall. There was another poster nearby and he stepped closer to have a quick look, before walking closer to the where his fellow teen was putting up a similar-looking poster. “Good afternoon” Up close, Arian thought the messy-haired student looked vaguely familiar – maybe even one of his classmates – he looked to be around his age. “Would you mind telling me what a MUFON is?” his voice was curious, if somewhat on the quiet side.

Gabe was pretty much absorbed in ensuring posters were up, so Arian unintentionally snuck up on him. But at least it wasn't overly startling, and he didn't jump or anything, just turned rather quickly.
"Oh, uh, we'll." Gabe coughed. He wasn't often actually asked about his favorite thing. "MUFON is the Mutual UFO network; it's a national organization for the study of UFO sightings, the consideration of evidence, et cetera," he said. There was absolutely no hint in his voice that he considered this at all embarrassing.

The other teen’s words were unexpected, although Arian managed to keep his reaction to a slight blink and his voice when he spoke was its usual quiet tone. "I guess that MUFON is quite a big thing if it's a national network" even if it was the dark-haired teen's first time hearing about it. "The only thing I know about UFOs is that apparently the X-Files had some." Although having never watched the show Arian couldn't say if it was true. "Then again it's not really my thing."

"In the, er, UFO community, yeah, it is kind of a big deal." Gabe shrugged. It wasn't as if everyone was in the community, and there were people who weren't even aware that fictional portrayals of UFO sightings were sometimes based in real sightings.
"Haha, most people only know of it from fiction." He acknowledged. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind, X-Files, stuff like that. But people really do see that kind of stuff." He sounded eager and earnest.

Put that way it sounded like MUFON was kind of like a fringe group with only the people in the know really knowing about it. He tilted his head slightly as the teen continued to speak, although UFOs wasn't really his thing his fellow teen seemed to be pretty passionate about it. “Wouldn’t it be splashed all over the news or something if someone had really come face to face with a UFO?” he asked at last – although to the dark-haired teen his fellow teen sounded almost as if speaking from personal experience, Arian was pretty sure that was the sort of thing would probably make main time news or something if discovered to be true. Which reminded him “By the way I’m Arian, Arian Laith” he held out a hand. If he was lucky the other would let him have a name back, then he wouldn’t have to mentally refer to him as fellow Meadowview student who looks around my age and therefore may or may not be in some or all of my classes.

"Well, I mean," Gabe frowned. "Most people think it's crazy, crackpot stuff, yeah?" He said. "So it doesn't get a lot of coverage."
He blinked, and it occurred to him that yeah, he hadn't actually given his name. "Gabe Blake," he said, shaking Arian,s hand. "Nice to meet you." it was, sort of. At least Arian wasn't calling him crazy. He did rather like that.
Yet. Give it time, it usually came eventually.

“I guess that’s true,” Arian said quietly – after all it wasn’t as if the nightly news reports were flooded with reports on UFO sightings – okay so not that the dark-haired teen watched a lot of the nightly news. “Although if there’s enough evidence put out then people would have to take it seriously – kind of like it being in front of their eyes and all.” He smiled as the other introduced himself, his handshake firm without squeezing “Nice meeting you too Gabe.” If the other teen was waiting for Arian to start calling him a weirdo then he had a pretty long wait ahead of him (as in pretty much never) – okay so the dark-haired teen wasn’t particularly into the stuff himself – but being rude and insulting the other for doing so wasn’t his way either.

"I would love for there to be something like that someday." Gabe's expression was pretty thoroughly starry-eyed. "Something that happens, and it makes everyone have to look up and pay attention. But....it'd have to be pretty spectacular, I guess. War of the Worlds or something."
"So uh, what are you staying after for?" He asked. He was actually genuinely curious. He was even ignoring his niggling worry about the whole potential-enemy thing. It was something he had to at least try and forget on a day-to-day, civilian basis.

“Track practice” Arian admitted. “I don’t usually stay late on Mondays as the team practices on Fridays, but our coach was ill so they shifted practice from last Friday to today.” It effectively meant having to practices in one week since as far as he was aware the upcoming Friday practice was still going ahead as normal. Not that Arian particularly minded having track practice twice in one week given that he enjoyed running.

"Oh, you're on the track team?" Gabe asked. "How is that?" He wasn't sure he had time for another club, and definitely not for the kind of commitment you had to put in for a sport, but if he was going to do one, track would probably be it. Running fast, at least, he could try to do.

“It’s pretty neat. I prefer running the middle distance stuff like the 800 and 1500 metres since I’m not that great at sprinting” Arian admitted, before adding. “I’m not really in it for the competition though – I just enjoy running.”
That’s not to say that he didn’t put the effort into practice – Arian ran outside of school as well as diligently attending the Friday after school practices – it was just winning wasn’t the be all and end all for him.

Gabe nodded. "Ah, gotcha. Is it, uh, really tough?" He asked. "Like, a lot of work? It sounds like fun," he admitted. He would like to do a lot of running. It seemed like good training for any number of things, and building up endurance or speed might not be such a terrible thing.

“I don’t find it tough” Arian admitted “Then again I’ve been running for a bit – I used to run for the school team in my old school too.” He smiled “It’s not something that you need to be part of a team to do though, not unless you want to do it competitively – you can pretty much run anywhere.” His smile turned rueful “Well maybe not in the halls here.” Even the school administration, lax as it was compared to his old school might frown a little if people started running and ended up knocking people down because of it.
