The Place: The NHC Grand Central Library

The Prompt: Misconceptions and stereotypes. We've all faced them and we've all made our own whether we realise it or not. Truth is, those stereotypes have a place in our understanding, but sometimes that understanding can be misconstrued too far. Like being in a box with only one window you can peer out of.

So lets take a sledgehammer to that window and jump on through.

Chances are, you'll like what you see.

Glad we could clear that up for ya. Enjoy the show.

He forgot how much it sucked being short. Small things like that made him appreciate knowing that he'd grown a considerable amount bigger. Also, considerably more attractive, but that was besides the point. Standing in the aisle of one of his favourite sections of the library, a quizzical looking Talymn stared upwards with an info card in hand. It told him that the book he was searching for was on the top shelf and after having gone through the few rows that were within arms reach rather vigorously, he was forced to admit that the info card was correct. Head tilted all the way back to where his neck was straining to get a better look at the titles from this angle, lo-and-annoyingly-behold, there stood a copy of "A Vision Of Things To Come Whilst Trapezing Through An Hallucinatory Romp of-" Blah, blah, blah... Fudgin' ol' ti'ull struchhers...

Releasing a sigh of defeat, Talymn stretched his neck back and forth as he looked about the long walkway. Not a step ladder in sight. Nor any of the library drones. It wouldn't have been so bad if they would just let his lusus into the building. Buzzkilla wouldn't have caused that much of a problem, Talymn thought, but nope. The girl at the receptionist desk was pretty severe about not letting him in. Well, tha' set'uls et 'en. Taking one last look about, the high blood set about to conquer great new heights. 'Great new heights' here having the meaning of '10 feet of tightly packed bookshelves'.

As a wiggler, Vremea loved going to the library. She'd stay inside, look around, lightly brush her pudgy hands upon the leathery, worn books as she passed them, inhaling that satisfying scent of knowledge. When she finally found the books she had been looking for, she'd pull them out, flipping through their pages like they were sacred— they each told a tale, whether it be informative or not, and each should be respected, seen as godly for their ability to hold information so easily— so well. Yakmom would stay outside, sitting in the sand, either sleeping of thinking to herself. She'd sit herself down on her chair, block out the voices lurking around her, and focus wholly on her books, not stopping until the familiar grunt of a Yak's call sounded from the outside. The receptionist would take a glance at her and she'd be up, taking her handmade bookmarker and placing it between the pages, sometimes swerving around the desk to hand it to the older troll with the glasses, sometimes standing on her tippytoes to slide it onto the desk. She'd leave with a few books in tow and return a few days later, all of them finished and throughly read. A smile would grace her face as she would hand the books back to the woman at the counter.

Now, the process was different.

Now that she was a child again, Vremea couldn't work. She had sent a message to her boss, explaining how she had taken a sip of the magical potion. She received one soon after, relieved she was only off the hook because it seemed to be affecting many more trolls, not only her but the Queen as well. She hated not to work, and since then, spent at least an hour in each library, flipping through the familiar leafy pages— this time as a customer. As she looked through the books again, she pursed her lips, eying each book, slightly frustrated with the stupid librarian that was "taking care" of the books.

As she strolled through the endless rows of bookshelves, she noticed a kid climbing the booksh— wait. WHAT?! How stupid could a kid be? She forgot everything for a moment, overcome with worry for the books—her books, she yelled in a worried and irritated voice while taking a few steps toward him. "Hey! Stop tha—" But then she realized when she took a glance at his shirt. He was a... A highblood— he could cull her... She stopped walking. "Um. I mean. C-could you please refrain from climbing the shelves? It... It'd... please stop." She urged, her voice trying to sound convincing. Please stop. You're hurting the books...! I know you're a highblood, but you should at least behave! She thought, her lips tight, her eyes pleading— she only hoped she'd be able to stop him.

Halfway into his ascent, Talymn discovered two things:

One, these bookshelves are packed really, really tightly.

And two, he should have looked for better fitting shoes before leaving his hiveblock.

He had just stuffed his beat up old sneakers to where they would remain firmly on his feet without much trouble or risk of slipping, but the footholds the bookshelf were presenting were incredibly shallow, keeping him from actually gripping with his toes. Shoulda taken 'em off firs'... With that bit of hindsight archived for possible future use, the kid clambered up closer to his goal, only to freeze in plac just as his hand was about to touch the binding of his chosen book when a rather shrill, scolding voice reached him.

"Whazzit...?" Turning his gaze on the voice's owner, the kid stared back at her innocently, one brow raising at the sudden meekness in her tone. "Ah, don' worreh 'baut et, luv!" he answered back, flashing a broad grin as he grabbed the book. "Juss' nee'ed t'grab this'un way up 'ere s'all, see?"

And that was that. Or should have been, but that would have been boring for everyone involved apparently. Looking about a moment, Talymn got another curious thought in his head. "Oye, oye, catch this fer me will ya? Wanna take a look-see at sumfin'..." He quickly added, dropping the book with full confidence in the girl's supposed reflexes before he continued to climb up onto the top of the bookshelf, gaining a better view of the library layout.

Vremea cringed at his voice.

His accent. He abbreviated words. He abbreviated words. And he was a purple blood. Her mind was going off the charts. Why did trolls like to abbreviate their words? Why did purple bloods like to shorten their words? It was frustrating...

"W-wait..!" She said in a small voice. "Please, please be careful— wait—" She fondled with the hem of her dress in worry— the shelves— they may have been pretty new but they might break with the weight of all the books and him! Not only that, but he would fall...

Vremea could not stop fretting about. After the young troll took the book out, she pursed her lips.

"You've gotten your book— please come down, please please please stop, you'll fall—"

"Oye, oye, catch this fer me will ya? Wanna take a look-see at sumfin'..."

Her eyes widened. He had released the book. To fall from that high of a latitude. She struggled to catch the book, it falling into her awaiting arms and making her fall down with a yelp— why were books so big?? They hadn't been before... She carefully lifted it off of her lap, placing it on the shelf on the bottom. This purpleblood was such a trouble maker, why couldn't he just get the stairs? They were... Not around. Darn it, he must be a lazy troll...

Had she never seen him before? She was sure she had seen him before, once or twice at least...

Nevertheless, she needed to get him down... Last try. "Please come down..." She said in a lower voice, it coming out loud enough to hear but almost like a mumble. If this did not work, she was going to call the librarian. Or whine some more, because what if the purpleblood held a grudge on her for calling the higher up?? And then he looked for her later and culled her?? She just could not rat him out, maybe she could go up there and get him??

It was settled. If he did not come down she was going to go up there and try to convince him to go down.

As it turned out, the library layout was rather boring in Talymn's opinion. Despite being in the older sections of the building, the synthetic wooden shelves were in organised rows of columns and not some sort of hidden shape that could have been the secret code of the Silenced or some such similar underground cult that he was hoping for. Not letting the disappointment distract him for too long though, he looked over the edge at hearing the girl speak up again, one of his bushy eyebrows quirking in mild interest at seeing her try to follow his example in climbing up 'Mt. Shelf-erest' (or whatever the troll equivalent of that is).

Heh... persiss'an’ li'l bird, yeh? He mused with a light chuckle before flopping over onto his back and placed his hands behind his head to stare up through the skylight. It was an unusually clear night with the brightest stars twinkling in competition with the city lights. Half thinking about wanting to go to the rooftop for a better view, a sudden blur of movement caught his eye. At first, he labelled it as a passing meteor, but it showed again, this time identifying itself as a rather large insectoid. Pops..? With a puzzled stare, he watched as the lusus made its way through an opening in the skylight, crawling upside down to the ceiling walls. So tha's 'ow 'e always managed t'know.... Pffft... guy can get in'ta anywhere, I swe-

"HEY! YOU GRUB GET DOWN FROM THERE!"

Sitting up with a start, Talymn looked over to see a rather angry looking adult storming towards him on the side opposite to the girl; one of the librarians. "Oh, cripes..." Preparing himself to jump back down, a sudden warning screech from above caused the kid to freeze. Being one not to totally misread a situation and cause a ruckus, Buzzkilla had launched himself off the ceiling, gunning for the new threat. With only a brief cry of surprise, the lusus had tackled the adult, sending him flailing back against the bookcase and easily toppled it over just as Talymn made a hasty jump for the nearest shelf.

.. . Oooooh, this is bad… this is… really… really bad…. Wincing, the kid stared down at the mess, half wondering about the little pidgeon pinned underneath.

quite uneventful
What happened next was a deliriously, quite uneventful series of odd events that included a trip to dream land. And a pot of petunias followed by a whale. We’re not sure why that happened at the moment. Check back later as we uncover more of this rather disinteresting and mundane twist of life.

Hmph! Vremea was glad to see the librarian come before she had to report the problem. Gosh, kids like them were to be lectured for a lifetime! She huffed and lingered around the bookshelf to hear the kid getting reprimanded, feeling accomplished, as if he had gotten what he deserved. Just as she was about to leave, a loud, piercing shriek came out of nowhere, making her stop walking abruptly.

She turned around, and the world suddenly revolved in slow motion— a loud thump against the bookshelf, a sudden push, a wide eyed stare— and suddenly it was fast again. The bookshelf came flying toward her, fast, barely giving her enough time to scream.

BAM!

The flying books hit her forehead, making her crumple onto the floor, knocked out and half crushed underneath the shelf, her stubby little hand sticking out. But that didn't stop the bookshelf from continuing the process of the rest of the bookshelves falling down like lined dominos.

The next bumped into the next shelf, as if testing the little boys ability to jump at the perfect time. And even if he jumped, he'd have to do it again and again, trying to not fall.

If Vremea was awake to see this, she would have freaked at the falling bookshelves and the huge mess. But instead, she was unconscious.

So she let herself dream.

The disturbance was loud and hard enough to be confused with the roaring call of thunder. Sleepily, two slitted yellow eyes flashed open with mild agitation for being so rudely awakened for no justifiable reason and stared up into the thick, lush forest canopy that filtered golden moonlight from the ever eternal night sky. The air remained still and calm without showing even the slightest chance of change. No storm? The eyes narrowed slightly in confusion before turning to glance every which way and widened again at catching sight of a devastated trail of fallen trees. Such a thing was a bit of a rare occurrence all on its own in the Wild, Winding Woods, but the particular pattern that the fallen trees created- two separate lines that met to form a complete circle- just made the setting that much more curious.

Counting his lucky stars for not getting caught up in that mess, the spectator made his way down from his perch in a careless, but precise manner. With flashes of purple wisps, he’d appear and reappear at seemingly random intervals, following the line towards the apex of the mess where the two lines intersected. As he continued, there became a sudden sense of urgency in his movement, sensing something being caught amidst the wreckage. His appearances and disappearances grew more frequent; skipping all around the perimeter as he searched for that ‘Something’ until at last, there came a rustle of noise.

Again in that flash of purple, he appeared at the source of the rustling and with a bit of difficulty he began to clear away some of the brush and branches, pausing at the sight of tangled hair and messy yellow bows. ”Oye, oye… Ya still breathin’ or wot?” He asked, poking at the head a few times with even less concern in his voice than what his words offered. ”Grunt once for ‘yes’, stay quiet fer ‘no’.”

This seemed to be a reoccurring dream for her.

A girl trying to get a rowdy kid to settle down in a library. She could feel what was happening, but she could not do anything to stop her from her inevitable fate— to get crushed by a bookcase. No, no no, the nightmare! She had to wake up, she did not like this dream! The poking and the prodding on her head made it even worse...

It was strange. Something was talking to her—In her dream? No, it seemed unrelated to the dream. Nevertheless, the rowdy boy in her dream turned around to look at her and... Spoke? "...Oye, oye... Ya still breathin’ or wot?"

The girl with the bows in her hair wanted very much wanted to ask what he was talking about, but as stated before, she couldn't move the body she inhabited. She tried to speak, but her voice didn't come out, and she couldn't move. Instead, her mouth moved without a voice, and once she realized she wasn't saying anything, she stopped.

"Grunt once for ‘yes’, stay quiet fer ‘no’." The boy said, and then, the bookcase began to fall onto her. Before it could crush her, however... the dream collapsed upon itself. She woke up slowly, groaning and moving around as if trying to find a more comfortable position to sleep in, feeling a bit uncomfortable on the ground.

Wait...Ground? When did I fall asleep? No, better yet, how could I fall asleep on such a rigid, uncomforable surface? Her head hurt. Her eyes fluttered open and squeezed shut soon after, only remembering the darkness of the sky... Was she outdoors? That would explain the reason she smelt earth around her.

She opened her eyes again, this time a little wider than before, only to see a dark blob of black looming above her. Instantly she woke up from the fright, her eyes darting open like a deer in headlights. "Who are you?" She asked abruptly, her hand instinctively reaching to her side to grab her wea... Wait, what? Why would she reach to her side...? She knew she didn't have anything there. She looked around, staring at the open sky with stars, the high trees in the distance, and... Collapsed trees next to her? Why would there be trees collapsed next to me?

Instead of wondering about that, she looked back to the being, glaring at the figure, deciding against crawling away as that might make whoever this was attack her. If this boy was an enemy, she had to be on edge, even if her eyes were still blurry from the sleep. But if he wasn't, she needed to find out where she was, how she got here, and how to get back.

And what he was doing, looking at her while she slept?! How strange!

"Where am I?" She asked, a menacing tone heavy in her voice, her expression unwavering.
