Orion Project A.K.A. Spartan-I Program:

Origins:
The beginning of the SPARTAN Program dates back to the 23rd Century, when the newly formed UNSC began developing bioengineering protocols and experimenting with biochemically altering human soldiers. Although these performance enhancing substances were very primitive and nowhere near as effective as the chemicals used to augment the soldiers of the SPARTAN Programs, they did show promise and gave results and serve as the catalyst for future endeavors. Since then, human soldiers have used performance-enhancing equipment for decades.

Expansion and Conflict:
With the formal establishment of the Inner colonies in 2390, mankind's expansion era had begun, and the next century would be an important boom for Humanity. As mankind expanded, the political and military power that the UEG desired to maintain began to diminish, and sentiments of self-rule and political independence spread among the colonists. As the Colonies began to separate themselves from Earth, the UNSC took every step necessary to keep its grip on the Outer Colonies that were developing during this time. By the 2400s, Outer and many Inner colonies soon began to question the often-draconian interference of the UEG in what was originally intended to be a confederation of independently governed worlds.

Orion begins:
The ORION Project, later known as the SPARTAN-I Program, was a Special Operations Force in the UNSC. Administratively, the ORION project was under the control of ONI Section-III, the Special Projects section of ONI's Beta-5 Division. However the SPARTAN-I soldiers themselves were under the operational authority of Naval Special Warfare Command/Naval Special Weapons. The ORION/SPARTAN-I Program was an all volunteer force composed of the best soldiers from the Marine Corps and Special Forces branches of the military, the SPARTAN-Is performed specialized, high-risk operations including: counter-insurgency operations, unconventional warfare, direct action and black operations. The ORION/SPARTAN program was headquartered on one of the many orbital docks on Reach, and in the height of the program had 300 active duty personnel. The members of the ORION/SPARTAN-I program were all augmented soldiers, using new training methods and the latest breakthroughs in biochemical developments. Augmentations to the SPARTAN-I soldiers include muscular enhancement injections, pulmonary respiratory enhancements, retina-inversion injections, and cochlea enhancement tuning. In addition to the physical enhancements, mental augmentations were performed to enhance brain functions including enhanced learning capabilities to allow a subject to learn at a faster and higher rate and enhanced motor skills to improve body movements. The SPARTAN-I training regime was very difficult and included many tests both mental and physical, including work done in the lab. All sixty-five initial volunteers made it through the training and augmentation procedures and were placed on active duty some time after completing their training. After their initial deployment and success funding for training the next group of SPARTAN-Is was approved, and within a few years the SPARTAN-I Program had one-hundred-sixty-five active duty personnel.

Effectiveness and Shortcomings:
As the war against the Insurrectionists continued to escalate, the UNSC stepped up their counter-insurgent activities under Operation: TREBUCHET, created in response to the defector UNSC Marine Colonel Robert Watts. The SPARTAN-Is became a key member in the fight against the rebel attacks across the colonies, taking down insurgents as soon as they cropped up, however as time went on the insurgent attacks became more effective, and insurgent personnel more difficult to root out, and over the ensuing decades, became more organized and difficult to combat.

First Deactivation:
With Civil wars dying down and Insurrectionists going into hiding the program was deactivated and the Spartans reassigned to their original units.

The Relaunch of Orion:
As the civil wars began to reintensify in the Outer and Inner colonies, many of the CMA's resources were taken over by the UNSC and ONI. Using data supplied by ONI, the CMA relaunched ORION in secrecy in response to insurgent attacks in the colonies. The project began in January of 2491 with sixty-five test subjects, after completing their training an additional one-hundred volunteers were accepted into the now dubbed SPARTAN program. The first SPARTAN-I deployment occurred in January of 2496 as part of Operation: CHARLEMAGNE, during this operation the full unit of SPARTAN-Is were deployed to recover the sub-orbital transit station over Eridanus II. This marked the only time a full unit of Spartans were ever deployed in the entire program — they completed their mission with only a single casualty and without being seen. The resulting success of CHARLEMAGNE, and tales of the military deploying advanced super-soldiers were born, this became fuel for a range of conspiracy theories and media speculation. As the legend of the super soldiers continued to grow they gave birth to a new round of propaganda efforts by ONI in the coming decades.

KALEIDOSCOPE and Deactivation:
In 2502, Operation: KALEIDOSCOPE, part of the UNSC's greater plan to pacify the entirety of Human-colonized space, was put into action. Many SPARTAN-Is were deployed to take down insurrectionist strongholds, but one of the key goals was to eliminate Jerald Mulkey Ander, the leader of another major insurrectionist faction, the Secessionist Union. Although KALEIDOSCOPE successfully dealt a heavy blow to the insurgents, the overall strategy of KALEIDOSCOPE failed to pacify the colonies. Operation: TANGLEWOOD would be the last operation the SPARTAN-Is participated in, the exact nature of this operation is not known other than that it was to combat insurrectionist forces. in 2506 The SPARTAN-I Program was quietly deactivated and the surviving members reassigned to other special operations units in the field. However these soldiers often exhibited side effects as a result of their augmentations and many members were discharged from the military as a result of mental instabilities. In order to ensure absolute secrecy, the side effects caused by SPARTAN-I augmentations are masked as a disease known as Boren's syndrome, many SPARTAN-Is go on to retire, some eventually have children, but due to their augmentations their children must also be given some form of injections to ensure no defects.

Spartan-II Program:

Origins:
In the years following the deactivation of the ORION Project in 2506 the effectiveness of small special forces in combating the insurrectionists diminished as the Insurrectionist movement became too large for the UNSC to manage. As insurrectionist became more effective and the military's responses consequently become more forceful, the need for large scale military campaigns became more and more obvious. In 2517 the Office of Naval Intelligence began to reexamine the Carver Findings, which had warned of instability in the Outer Colonies years earlier. The report rationalized that the instability would continue to escalate, and unless drastic military measures were taken, would result in a massive war between the inner colonies and the outer colonies. ONI's own projections at that time and up to 2525 concluded the same as Dr. Carver's findings. The SPARTAN-II project was conceived by Dr. Catherine Halsey of ONI Section III's Special Projects Division as the successor to the ORION Project and the best possible solution to end the widespread insurgency that raged throughout UNSC space. The project was created with several goals in mind. The first goal was to create a group of elite soldiers meant to subdue insurrections in their infancy, without substantial military casualties. The second goal was to minimize civilian casualties and avert civil war. The third goal was to substantially reduce the cost of conventional means of pacification.
Halsey's proposal for the project detailed radical changes in many different fields. The first and most controversial was the subjects themselves, who were selected by a gene-candidate pool, and must fit into a certain age restriction protocol. They must also have possessed superior physical and mental attributes. The trainees must be instilled with military value, and the understanding of war; something that cannot be taught to enlisted soldiers. This narrowed the candidates down to children who would be raised and taught in the art of warfare and military values, from a young age. Using such controversial means of creating a soldier meant that the project would have to be carried out in the highest form of secrecy.

Though conventional body armor had protected soldiers for centuries, the SPARTAN-II project's second radical change involved integrating the subject with a new powered exoskeleton device, designed to help keep its user safe and provide a powerful means of combating enemy forces. The drawback of this new armor is its requirement for augmenting the subject, effectively turning the Spartans into human guinea pigs.

Despite the tremendous risk and the unethical means of creating new soldiers, the SPARTAN-II project got the green light by the top brass within the Office of Naval Intelligence, who concluded that the lives that could be saved far outweighed the risks involved. The project was initially granted funding for 300 candidates, though funding was later reduced to half this number. By 2517, 150 suitable candidates had been identified through DNA gathered from the UNSC's civilian vaccination program, though funding had been further reduced to support only half that number. Seventy-five children, all six years old and of both sexes, were kidnapped. In order to preserve the program's secrecy, the children were replaced by flash clones which would die soon thereafter due to numerous medical complications associated with flash-cloning an entire human being.

Training:
The SPARTAN-II candidates after being sedated were taken to the colony world Reach, and began their training under Chief Petty Officer Mendez. To marginalize the civilian lives they had once led, their names became a combination of their given names and a number, with family names being discarded. The Spartans endured a great deal of hardship during their first years of training: they were placed into situations and drills that pushed their abilities to their very limit and beyond. Their hard training was complemented with high-level education, which included mathematics, science, reading, writing, and military tactics. Although his training methodology was tough, even brutal in some regards, Chief Petty Officer Mendez always instilled discipline, honor, and respect into the Spartans. He taught the Spartans how to kill, but at the same time he taught them the difference between right and wrong. Mendez trained the Spartans until 2525 when, at the age of fourteen, they would go through the toughest part of their training: the biological augmentation procedures, which would kill 30 of the 75 conscripted children and cripple 12 others who would "wash out" of the SPARTAN-II program, going on to join the Office of Naval Intelligence; only 33 survived the procedures with no physiological deformities. The bodies of those candidates who died were placed in cryo-suspension, in the hope that they could some day be resuscitated. At least some of the candidates who were crippled were eventually rehabilitated. Several elements of the candidates' training were kept secret from Halsey that only Professor Agnes and Professor Mike (who worked on the project with her) knew about

Personnel:

Active Duty:
The identities of the Spartans' full names have been deleted from all military records. Only Dr. Halsey has the originals of the secret files that contain the full names of all the Spartans on Reach; unfortunately, the records were destroyed after the planet was Glassed. Although, Unknown to Dr. Halsey, Admiral Margaret Parangosky had made copies of the files. Publicly, only their first names and service tags are known with their current status.

Spartan-III Program:

Origins:
The SPARTAN-III program was both the successor and supplement to the SPARTAN-II program. Created and engineered by Colonel Ackerson of the Office of Naval Intelligence, the SPARTAN-III soldiers were to be the next generation of super soldiers. Composed primarily of vengeful orphans from fallen colonies, they would be cheaper to arm, train, and produce; being chosen from a wider pool of candidates, they would also be more numerous than their SPARTAN-II predecessors. They would rely on superior battle tactics, teamwork and sheer numbers rather than advanced technology, special augmentation, and equipment, to achieve their effectiveness

Purpose:
The SPARTAN-II program had been a dazzling success for the UNSC. Tales of Spartan super soldiers fighting off thousands of Covenant attacks had become the stuff of legend. Unfortunately, there were too few SPARTAN-IIs to turn the tide of the war. Even worse, the director for the program, Dr. Catherine Halsey, had postponed the training of new Spartan-IIs for years due to the extremely specific genetic requirements for the children to be selected.
The SPARTAN-II program also had several problems and deficiencies which overshadowed its success to ONI. Firstly, the high mortality rate of the children during augmentation was counter-productive to the purpose, drive, and ambition of the program. Next, funding the Spartan program, including their training and MJOLNIR armor, cost as much as a Battle Group, at least according to Rear Admiral Ned Rich. Third, there were far too few of them for them to turn the tide of the war. Finally, the Spartan-II program had gone public to improve morale in 2547. Even though it was a huge morale boost to the UNSC, it was a problem for most of the Office of Naval Intelligence. ONI operated in secrecy, and anything that shone light on their operations was seen as detrimental to their efforts.

The SPARTAN-IIIs were designed to be better trained, cheaper, and expendable. They would be trained in companies of 300 to 330 at a time, and then sent on suicide missions that the UNSC could not accomplish even with the elite Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. Though the casualty rates of the SPARTAN-IIIs stood at 100 percent on some missions, to ONI, all the operations were strategic successes. They were trading lives for time against the larger and technologically superior Covenant Empire. ONI hoped that in time, enough Spartans would survive to train more and more future Spartans, swelling the ranks of available super soldiers from only thirty SPARTAN-IIs in 2531 to a hundred thousand SPARTAN-IIIs within ten to twenty years.

Spartan-IV Program:

Origins:
The SPARTAN-IV Program is the fourth generation of the SPARTAN Program. It consists of members recruited from the UNSC's military who were augmented to be capable of wearing a variant of the MJOLNIR GEN2 armor. This phase was initiated by Admiral Margaret Parangosky after the Human-Covenant War, and some are stationed near the UNSC Infinity in the Oort Cloud.
Similar to the original ORION Project, the SPARTAN-IV Program would only consist of adult volunteers, as opposed to young children (despite their stellar operational record in previous generations of the program). When the program was started, surviving members of previous generations were offered an opportunity to be integrated into it, though it remains unknown how many accepted or declined. The first active SPARTAN-IVs were already deployed as early as 2553 as some of them were temporarily assigned to the UNSC Infinity before it was scheduled to launch.

Augmentation procedures I-IV:

Spartan-II Procedures,introduction:
Human biochemical experiments and enhancement procedures have been apart of society dating back to the 20th century, their gains have attracted widespread attention in the hopes of improving human strength and endurance. Military experimentation of such enhancements has always been limited for the sake of morality and ethical concerns. However as technology improved and as scientists continued to understand the human body, advancements paved the way for the eventual use of body enhancement chemicals. The first bio-engineering protocol was established to help humans adjust to long duration spaceflight and different planetary environmental conditions; and subsequently for interplanetary war. The fruition of such procedures to help create a superior soldier did not solidify until the limited success of the ORION Project which would pave the way for the success of the SPARTAN-II Program.

Augmentation Procedures, Descriptions/Risks:
Carbide Ceramic Ossification: Advanced material grafting onto skeletal structures to make bones virtually unbreakable. Recommended coverage not to exceed 3% total bone mass because of significant white blood cell necrosis. Specific risk for pre-and near-postpubescent adolescents, skeletal growth spurts may cause irreparable bone pulverization.
Muscular Enhancement Injections: Protein complex is injected intramuscularly to increase tissue density and decrease lactase recovery time. Five percent (5%) of test subjects experience a fatal cardiac volume increase.
Catalytic Thyroid Implant: Platinum pellet containing human growth hormone catalyst is implanted in the thyroid to boost growth of skeletal and muscle tissues. Rare instances of Elephantiasis. Suppressed sexual drive.
Occipital Capillary Reversal: Submergence and boosted blood vessel flow beneath the rods and cones of the subject's retina. Produces a marked visual perception increase. Retinal rejection and detatchment. Permanent blindness.
Superconducting Fibrification of Neural Dendrites: Alteration of bioeletrical nerve transduction to shielded electronic transduction. 300% increase in subject reflexes. Anecdotal evidence of marked increase in intelligence, memory, and creativity. Significant instances of Parkinson's Disease and Fletcher's Syndrome.

Effects:
Although the subject is in a state of unconsciousness, a state of which the subject should not feel any pain, the effects of the augmentation procedures produce excruciating pain. Physiological stress of the augmentations can produce cardiac arrest; in addition to cross-chemical complications that can result in augmentation failure.
Each procedure is marked with their set of unbearable pain, the carbide ceramic ossification is said to feel like the subjects bones are breaking, as if their marrows were made of glass and were being shattered. The catalytic thyroid implant and muscular enhancement injections produce extraordinary pain as if the subject's veins had been injected with napalm, as well as pulsating and the feeling of them being torn out of the subjects skin. The effect of the muscles increasing in density is said to feel like the entire body was on fire mixed with the feeling of plated glass shattering and being worked in the subject's body. The superconducting fabrication of neural dendrites is said to feel like fire is burning along the subject's nerves on their spines.

The side effects of completing the augmentations vary, as the subject's brain relearns how to move his body with faster reflexes and stronger muscles, experiences neurological confusion that include falling over exaggerated reflexes problems holding onto an object or problems grabbing it. The subject can experience bleeding eyes, incredible pain, constant headaches and aches in the bones.

As time goes on successful augmentation subjects side effects diminish either completely or to the point where it is considered mild.

Results:
Only a few months after augmentation procedures the SPARTAN-IIs were noted of being capable of running at speeds exceeding 55 km/h or 34.2 mph. Kelly-087 was capable of running even faster than this speed. Later during the Human-Covenant war while in her Mark V MJOLNIR Armor, Kelly-087s the top speed recorded was 62 km/h or 38.5 mph John-117 has been noted to have briefly ran at around 105 km/h or 65.2 mph during a MJOLNIR MARK V training exercise, however his Achilles tendon was torn because the strain put on his body was unsustainable.
The SPARTAN-IIs are capable of lifting three times their body weight, which is double the normal weight of an average human due to the ceramic bone augmentations, in addition to their increased muscle density. John-117 is noted for using his enhanced strength combined with his skills to kill a Brute with his bare hands during Operation: First Strike. During the fight on Alpha Halo or Instillation-04 John-117 was also able to use his enhanced strength to kill Covenant Elite's with skull breaking punches. During the events on planet Onyx, Will-043 used his enhanced strength to engage a Hunter pair in hand to hand combat, and succeeded in killing one by ripping the worms out of its body. In the same battle, Kelly-087 engaged three Sangheili Major/Spec-Ops Elite's in hand to hand combat, snapping the wrist of one Elite, taking his energy sword, and cutting three Elite's in half with a single swing.

A SPARTAN-II's reaction time while impossible to chart accurately is estimated to be twenty milliseconds, their reaction times are significantly faster in combat situations or with A.I. assistance. The reaction times of the SPARTAN-IIs are so fast that they are able to think, react and see things happen in slow and fast motion - it is dubbed as "SPARTAN Time" by Kelly-087. SPARTAN-IIs are also known for their sharp eyesight being able to virtually see in the dark.

The thirty-three SPARTAN-IIs that are able to accomplish all this are without any serious physiological or mental instabilities.

Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez states after the augmentations that the Spartan will only get better as they adjust to the augmentation. Therefore many of the Spartans attributes have increased through time. These abilities were completely independent of the MJOLNIR armor, which only further augmented the Spartans' unprecedented capabilities. Despite the impressive feats the surviving Spartans performed many of the fourteen year old candidates died or "washed out" as a result of the augmentations. Rather than be buried or cremated their bodies were cryogenically preserved with the hopes of one day reviving these candidates. Experimental rehabilitation programs were performed on more than 80% of the washouts. The result of these programs, however, has yet to be determined. The augmentation procedures performed on the SPARTAN-IIs paved the way for Project CHRYSANTHEMUM and thus to the "disposable" Spartan-III's

Spartan-III/IV Procedures, introductions:
Project: CHRYSANTHEMUM is a set of SPARTAN-III bio-augmentation procedures, similar to those of the SPARTAN-II's. With advances in technology, however, the casualty rate for SPARTAN-III candidates was usually 0%, as opposed to the 56% casualty rate of the SPARTAN-IIs.

Results Drug/Description/Effect:
8942-LQ99 "carbide ceramic ossification catalyst" drug. Skeletons become virtually unbreakable, allowing survival in harder impacts.
88005-MX77 "fibroid muscular protein complex" drug. Increased density of individual's muscles, allowing heavier lifting.
88947-OP24 "retina-inversion stabilizer" drug. Color sharpness is significantly improved upon, and night vision is adapted.
87556-UD61 improve the colloidal neural disunification solution Greatly improves the individual's reaction time, decreasing the time taken to react by 300%. "Spartan time".

Gamma company also received the following in addition to the above.

009127-PX (cyclodexione-4) bipolar integration drug Counters the effects of 009762-OO.
009762-OO Neural-altering non-carcinogenic mutagen. Alters key regions in the individual's frontal lobe. Enhances aggressive response to dangerous levels. Requires regular doses of 009127-PX and 009927-DG to be taken to avoid uncontrollable aggression.
009927-DG miso-olanzapine Counters the psychological effects of 009762-OO.

In Comparison To Spartan-II's:
Spartan-III candidates came from a much wider gene pool than Spartan-II candidates did. Unlike the Spartan-III's, all the Spartan-II candidates possessed "perfect" genes that allowed their augmentations to have the greatest effects. This means that, even though the Spartan-III's received most of the Spartan-II's augmentations (Other than the Catalytic Thyroid Implant, which produced significant gain in muscle mass and strengthened bone structure), the "perfect" genes of the Spartan-II candidates produced superior results.

For example, as stated in Ghosts of Onyx the augmentation that supposedly gave Spartan-II's a 300% boost in reflexes (Superconducting Fibrification of Neural Dendrites) in reality caused a 1400% boost in reflexes, due to the genes of the Spartan-II candidates.

An exception to this would be Noble Team. The members of Noble Team, although most were Spartan-III's, possessed the same, or similar, extraordinary genes of the Spartan-II candidates (This, in turn, resulted in superior augmentation effects and superior physical characteristics), and thus were formed into a team and equipped with MJOLNIR armor.

Performance:
Spartan-IIIs were physically inferior to Spartan-II's, however they were still capable of super human feats. During the battle of Pagasi Delta, Tom-B292, 12 years old at the time and equipped only with SPI Armor engaged a Covenant Elite armed with a Plasma Pistol and an Energy sword in hand to hand combat. The Spartan's enhanced reflexes allowed him to dodge a Plasma Pistol bolt and sword swing at point blank range. He then proceeded to throw the Elite to the ground and finish it off with his Assault Rifle. It is also stated that during the battle, Elites and Jackals moved out of cover because they realized that it was suicide to face Spartan's in close quarters.
Spartan-IIIs were also described to have been moving with "speed and reflexes that no Covenant could follow". "They dodged, snapped necks and limbs, and with captured energy swords, they cut through the enemy until the field ran with rivers of gore and blue blood". The 300 or so Spartan-III's faced thousands upon thousands of Covenant, including Covenant air support, and were described to have been winning the battle until 7 Covenant Cruisers emerged as reinforcements.

It was stated by Mendez that as Spartans grew older, they only grew stronger, and faster as their bodies grew accustomed to their augmentations. During the battle on Pegasi Delta, Beta Company ranged from age 7 through 12. If the Spartan-III's lived long enough to mature, their physical abilities would have improved significantly.

Spartan Tactics, Procedures, Protocols, etc:

Introduction:
Decades of fighting against the increasingly adaptive Covenant has forced the Spartans to develop shorthand communications system for use against the Covenant. Many of these ideas are known and understood by the Spartans only, even as well-guarded secrets. These also sometimes make normal conversations with the Spartans impossible, as they can do a great deal inside their MJOLNIR armor that is indistinguishable from the outside. These signals include slight movements, cryptic statements, and radio communications.

SPARTAN-II Terms:

Oly Oly Oxen Free
Oly Oly Oxen Free is the Spartan-II's best-kept secret. It is their all clear signal which virtually no non-Spartan knows; the only known surviving non-Spartans being Cortana and Doctor Halsey. Déjà knew it too, as she taught it to them, though her fate is unknown as she was situated on Reach as it was conquered. This allows them to use it with guarded impunity over the COM to make others aware of their presence, location, or as an all-clear signal. It is a simple six note tune that can be whistled. It is this signal that the Master Chief picks up on when he and his companions return to Reach after the events on Alpha Halo and discover that the Covenant didn't glass the entire planet. It is unknown if Spartan IIIs use it.

Spartan "Smile"
Having grown up as soldiers, the Spartans kept their emotions to themselves, always controlling "bursts of emotion". The closest thing to an emotional symbol is the "Spartan Smile," used in place of a smile. The Smile consists of a quick swipe across one's own faceplate or a teammates with two fingers. The former way was usually used in place of the latter.

The Spartans signal to one another to open private COM frequencies by the flick of a finger. It is a move performed only in non-combat situations, when the Spartans can pay attention to each other's movement. This way they can communicate with one another without any unintended people hearing the conversation.

"Attention!"
The Spartans will click a COM channel twice to get the attention of their teammates if they need assistance. Recent improvements in Covenant sensor technology have made this gesture increasingly impractical, as Covenant will be made aware of a Spartan's location if that Spartan uses the COM in the presence of a Covenant vehicle.

"Relax"
The Spartans sometimes console one another non verbally with a simple bump or gesture of the shoulder. They have become used to their MJOLNIR armor, so each move they make is deliberate. Hence, the gesture is easy to recognize and understand.

"Trouble Ahead..."
A Spartan scout may signal that there is trouble ahead with a slight shake of the head from side to side.

"Stay Cool"
A short lateral cut with the hand across the chest or mouth area signals to stay calm.

"Inspect Armor"
By making a circle in the air with one to two fingers to turn around, a Spartan signals that they want to visually inspect another Spartans armor. Even if the computer diagnostics report everything as fine, Spartans don't take chances with their armor or any other machinery and still visually inspect each other's armor.

"Come Forward"
In combat, Spartans motion one another forward by flashing an index finger twice, sometimes two fingers are used for this gesture.

"Wait..."
Spartans tell one another to wait by flashing an amber acknowledgment light twice on their HUDs.

"Fall back, Fall back!"
Spartans signal one another to fall back immediately by winking three red acknowledgment lights on their HUDs.

"Friendly Approaching..."
On the battlefield, verbal communication could risk giving away one's position. Therefore, Spartans inform allied positions that they are approaching by winking their acknowledgment lights green twice.

"Freeze"
Slowly making a fist signals to tell a Spartan team to freeze.
SPARTAN-III terms

"Welcome"
The Spartan-IIIs "welcome" one another by swiping two fingers over their faceplate. This is a smooth, silent way to say hello, and is a toned down version of the SPARTAN-II's "Spartan Smile."

"Unknown Ahead"
Spartans on patrol who spot something ahead that is not immediately discernible as ally or enemy will signify it to their teammates by making a hand signal with a thumb pressing into the palm and the other fingers inwardly curled.

"Heavy"
This sign was only used once by Lucy in Ghosts of Onyx. This was signaled by holding up both palms, and making a down-and-up motion. It only had one recorded use in the books. However, this is the actual sign for heavy in the American Sign Language. Due to the post-traumatic vocal disarticulation Lucy suffers from the battle at Pegasi Delta, Lucy uses some form of ASL to communicate.

Projects MJOLNIR and SPI:

Brief Summary:
The MJOLNIR (Pronunciation: ˈmjɔlˌnɪɹ 'me-all-'nhr) Powered Assault Armor is a technologically advanced combat exoskeleton system designed to vastly improve the strength, speed, agility, reflexes and durability of a SPARTAN-II, SPARTAN-III or a SPARTAN-IV supersoldier.

Introduction:
Created parallel to the SPARTAN-II Program, the MJOLNIR Armor is currently the most advanced piece of tactical military hardware in human hands. Each suit alone costs as much as a small starship. The brainchild of Dr. Catherine E. Halsey, MJOLNIR is Halsey's attempt to create a powered exoskeleton capable of taking full advantage of the physical capabilities of a SPARTAN-II. The battlesuit is constructed in overlapping layers. It is a sealed system, capable of extravehicular activity or operations in toxic atmosphere. It is hardened against EMP and radiation, and has filters that are completely effective at removing toxins and bacteria from local atmosphere.
The armor's outer shell is composed of a multilayer alloy of remarkable strength and has been augmented with a refractive coating capable of dispersing a limited amount of Covenant energy weapon strikes. The suit contains a gel-filled layer underneath a thick black armored bodysuit. The gel layer regulates temperature and can reactively change its density. The inner skinsuit is made of a moisture-absorbing synthetic material linked to an environment control computer and the occupant's UNSC-issue neural interface.

Each human being has a molecular fiber network called the nervous system within their brain. An upgrade to the standard Neural Interface is issued to all high-ranking officers; another modified version of the neural lace is issued to all SPARTAN-IIs in the UNSC. This network translates electrochemical signals to digital code and routes them through an interface connection at the rear of the skull. Through this interface, the user's thoughts command the armor's movement and weapons; and input from the on board sensors comes directly to the user's mind. The synthesis of machine and mind is so fast that it is almost impossible to chart reaction time.

Between the external armor and the internal padding is the most devastating weapon the suit carries: a layer of reactive metal liquid crystal. Woven by molecular tools into a superdense optical computer memory, this revolutionary crystalline layer forms a network, capable of supporting the kinds of Artificial intelligence usually reserved for starships, as a type of piggyback system. An A.I.'s personality and processing matrices can be carried by the armor and delivered to the suit via onboard storage in a crystal data chip no larger than a personal credit card. Such technology did not exist when work began on the Mark I prototypes. At the same time it is amorphous, yet amplifies force, doubling lifting capability and increasing reaction time by a factor of five. Unfortunately the system is so reactive that normal human beings cannot use the suit without injuring themselves. Only humans who have carbide ceramic ossification, a skeletal augmentation, such as a SPARTAN-II, can safely wear the suit.

The suit also possesses other features that enhance its wearer's abilities. It has numerous clips, belts, and magnetic holsters for the attachment of additional weapons and ammunition; an advanced Heads-Up-Display(HUD) linked to sensors in the gloves detects the type of weapon and devices held, and to project shield strength, ammunition count, a targeting reticule, waypoints, a radio uplink for communication, health monitoring and other helpful data. In its final phase the MJOLNIR battlesuit weighs half a ton, or 1000 Lbs and when in use, is a fully neural-linked system. With an on board A.I using the human mind for parallel processing, the SPARTAN-II/MJOLNIR combination is designed to be the most devastating intelligence tool ever created.

Armor Systems:

Mark I Prototype Exoskeleton:
Initiated in 2512 the Mark I was one of the Navy's first experiments with powered exoskeletons - more human-powered defense structures than suits, the Mark I took 10 years to develop, but was bulky, unwieldy and needed to be tethered to a power source due to the extraordinary amount of energy needed to power it.[4] This was the downfall to the system as it required a connection to a fusion generator which hindered movement. The Mark I Prototype Exoskeleton improved the strength and stamina of the wearer and allowed a user to lift two tons (4,000 pounds) and run at 32 km/h (19.88 MPH) for extended periods of time. The Mark I contained a cutting edge on board computer that could assist the wearer by transmitting tactical and communications information to the standard neural implant issued to a soldier, the suit however did not possess the ability to carry an A.I on board. The armor could also be equipped with motion sensors, infrared scopes, and could be mounted with a 30mm mini-gun that fired on self-targeting armatures.
Research and development for the Mark I was carried out at Section Three's headquarters in the CASTLE facility on Reach, however the final assembly of components were done at the Damascus Testing Facility on Chi Ceti IV. At least forty Mark I suits were produced and although they never saw deployment on the battlefield they were later used to carry heavy equipment in docking bays, and dozens of others were dumped into Reach's titanium mines. The Mark I Exoskeletons were later used by trainers of the SPARTAN-IIs to protect themselves when training under Chief Petty Officer Mendez's orders. Otherwise the training could have killed them, as evidenced by the first day back at Reach when three trainers were accidentally killed during hand to hand combat exercises.

Mark II Prototype Exoskeleton:
The Mark II Prototype Exoskeleton was similar to the Mark I, but with slimmer profile which greatly increased mobility. The suit, however, still needed to be tethered to a Fusion Generator, but despite the fact that it was the most powerful piece of military hardware at the time, it was still impractical for battlefield deployment. One of the new additions to the Mark II included a refractive coating to help disperse heat from explosive attacks and better self-sealing in the event of damage while the unit is in space.
Mark III Prototype Exoskeleton

Mark III Prototype Exoskeleton :
The next prototype, the Mark III, incorporated a wireless power transmitter and receiver so that power could be transmitted directly to it, much like the Orbital Defense Platforms used to defend UNSC colonies. This design was quickly rejected for two reasons: first the armor still had a limited operational range as it had to remain within range of a bulky, immobile generator, and second, if the generator was to be knocked out it would result in the incapacitation of the suit and leave its user locked inside and helpless against enemy attacks. In the end, all of the first three prototypes had one thing in common: They were impractical on the battlefield, as large exoskeleton units did not have a substantial use in any form of combat.

MJOLNIR Mark IV Powered Assault Armor:
Although earlier attempts at developing high-powered armor produced designs that were impractical for battlefield deployment, the Mark IV MJOLNIR powered exoskeleton would be the first successful powered armor that saw deployment onto the battlefield. Developed by Dr. Catherine E. Halsey, the MJOLNIR Mark IV was a radical redesign of powered exoskeletons making use of technological innovations that did not exist when work on the first MJOLNIR exoskeleton suit began. The Mark IV MJOLNIR armor was fielded November 27, 2525 to August 29, 2552.

MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor/Black:
Created by a top secret parallel development lab in Seongnam, Korea, MJOLNIR: Black was a standalone "skunkworks" variant created exclusively for Team Black. It features a number of advances over even the then-current generation Mark V and the later VI. It was used on Verge during the Covenant invasion of the Epsilon Eridani System and Operation: BLOWBACK some time after.

MJOLNIR Mark V Powered Assault Armor:
The MJOLNIR Mark V is the first major upgrade of the system and introduced two revolutionary technologies for battlefield purposes: energy shielding reverse-engineered from Covenant technology, providing the user added protection against plasma weapons, and the ability to link a soldier and an AI together to provide the soldier instant intel in the field, along with other functions. In addition to major changes from the Mark IV, hundreds of other technical improvements are incorporated into the Mark V: for example, the fusion packs used to power the suits are half again the size of their predecessors. The Mark V was fielded November 24, 2551 to October 20, 2552.

MJOLNIR Mark VI Powered Assault Armor:
The MJOLNIR Mark VI is the third upgrade to the MJOLNIR system, the Mark VI once again introduces several technical improvements while refining advanced technologies introduced in the previous system. The first improvement made to the system is a faster recharge time on the suits' energy shield system so that the SPARTAN-II super soldier does not have to remain in cover for an extended period of time. The second is improved synchronization between the suit and user, this allows the SPARTAN-II to jump higher, run faster, and hit harder than a Spartan could previously. In addition, this equipment made medical kits obsolete for the SPARTAN-II because of the integration of devices that administer medical care of the armour.

MJOLNIR Mark VII Powered Assault Armor:
The MJOLNIR MK VII was an armor system mentioned by Dr. Halsey in her personal journal. It would appear to be the last planned phase of the MJOLNIR project. At the time the MJOLNIR project began, Halsey had planned on the MK VII suit featuring the following upgrades:
Next-gen fusion-plasma hybrid power system.
Atmospheric insertion systems.
Slipspace de-insertion capability.
Active AI transfer protocols.
Limited shaping of the energy shield (partial overlaps, airfoils etc.).
Atmospheric insertion would allow a Spartan to free-fall from space without a reentry vehicle, such as the ODST's SOEIV, but would most likely require a drag chute or parachute. Note that reentry in MJOLNIR armor has been done several times in Halo fiction, but is most likely outside both the Mark V and Mark VI design specs and has proven fatal. Although John-117 has done this while only being knocked unconscious and having a large dent inflicted on the right breastplate. Though its features and aesthetic qualities aren't mentioned in its single appearance, MJOLNIR Mark VII is worn by Naomi-010, a SPARTAN-II attached to Kilo-Five. It is mentioned as being lighter than Mark VI and is capable of upgrading itself passively when in standby via nanotechnology. Naomi frequently removes and puts on the armor, though whether this is a requirement of its self-upgrading nature or a preference of SPARTAN-010 is unknown.

Gen II Armor Versions
Main article: MJOLNIR GEN2
At some point after the development and deployment of Mark VII in 2553, engineers began work on the next generation of powered armor. It was lighter than previous iterations and likely implemented some Covenant and Forerunner technology. Some variant of the MJOLNIR Generation-II is worn by the SPARTAN-IV commandos aboard the UNSC Infinity.

Armor Components:

Helmet: The MJOLNIR Helmet is one of the most vital aspects to the MJOLNIR system. It is made of Titanium and contains key features like a Heads Up Display that links to the brain and hands, and can identify equipment and display information about it when it is picked up by the wearer. Another feature is the direct neural interface system which connects to a SPARTAN-IIs neural implants. Two core processor chips are implanted into the subjects skull in the rear of the head. This is essentially comparable to an on board computer using parts of the human brain for processing - when the connector at the rear of the subjects head and receptors in the brain link to the helmets on board sensors it creates the neural link needed to move the MJOLNIR suit. The helmet also contains other equipment to protect and aid the user in hostile conditions. This includes: filters to remove toxins from the atmosphere, a supply to provide air to the wearer during EVA, thermal and motion sensors, communications, solar-powered lighting, and imaging and video gear. The helmet also contains the A.I housing, where a ship-borne A.I chip is inserted, located on the back of the helmet.

Titanium Alloy Outer Shell: The outer shell of the MJOLNIR armor is comprised of a fairly thick titanium alloy. This plating covers the chest, arms, hip, legs, calves, feet and hands. This alloy is very resilient, can take significant punishment, and is nearly impervious to small arms fire. While enough shots from armor piercing rounds will breach the outer shell, the suit can take a few glancing blows from them without compromising the armor. The outer shell of the all MJOLNIR suits is covered with a refractive coating to help disperse the heat experienced from Covenant energy weapons. However one or two direct hits from any Plasma weapon will compromise the armor plating.

Titanium Nanocomposite Bodysuit: Sandwiched between the external armor and the internal padding is a thick black armored bodysuit. This suit has numerous functions, small but vital to the safety and survival of the wearer. The bodysuit is made of a titanium-based material, making it very strong and yet very flexible. It also serves as another layer of protection against ballistics attacks and is coated with a heat resistant material to disperse heat from Plasma weapons.

Hydrostatic Gel: Underneath the armored bodysuit is a gel-filled layer, this gel layer regulates the temperature of the suit and can re actively change its density to conform to the wearer's shape - the temperature inside the suit is controlled by the moisture absorbing cloth suit underneath the hydrostatic layer. The hydrostatic gel layer can also be pressurized to various levels to potentially save the wearers life should the wearer be subjected to high G forces or a high velocity impact; however, over pressurizing this layer can cause nitrogen embolisms.

Reactive Metal Liquid Crystal Layer: Sandwiched between the external armor and the internal padding, the liquid crystal layer of the suit is split into two sections that forms the inner structure of the suit. The first layer contains the Reactive Metal Liquid Crystal this reactive metal increases the strength, reaction time, mobility, speed, and all around physical performance of the SPARTAN-II. The section layer supports suit's Artificial intelligence, knitted together at a molecular level and fitted in between the outer plates and the inner padding. This type of computer memory is usually outfitted on a warship and as such this layer accounts for over eighty percent of the MJOLNIR armor's cost of construction and materials.

Magnetic Weapon Holder Strips: Available on the Mk. IV, Mk. V, and Mk. VI the magnetic strips are very small yet powerful magnets place on the legs, waist, and back of the suit and is used to hold any equipment with a magnetic property. The suit also contains an electromagnetic system on the boots of the MJOLNIR suit that allow its wearer to stay attached to a metal surface in Zero G environments and can be toggled on or off by the wearer.

Shields: First used on the Mk. V, and later refined on the Mk. VI, the energy shield device is reversed engineered from Covenant technology. Begun in 2532 forty scientists and technicians would spend the next 20 years attempting to make some use of the technology. For decades the attempts at cracking their technology had met with failure after failure, some had given up and others in the scientific community believed the energy shield technology could never be cracked. However at some point before 2552 a breakthrough was made and for the first time the UNSC had successfully cracked and improved upon the technology.

Pressure Seal: The Pressure Seal is a vital component to the MJOLNIR system, it keeps the system airtight, underwater or in space. The seal is very strong and will only break under extreme pressure, such as in a high velocity impact or when the Hydrostatic Gel has been over pressurized.

Automatic Biofoam Injectors: Introduced on the Mk. VI models Biofoam injectors is an integral part of the systems ability to keep a SPARTAN-II functioning in battle. Biofoam is a medical gel that is used to fill and seal a wound automatically, it is also used to treat any infection that could occur as a result of the wound. The process of injecting, or applying the gel to a wound, however it is extremely painful and is only a temporary solution; medical attention must be sought soon after to ensure survivability.

Fusion Reactor: The fusion reactor is the most essential part of the MJOLNIR System, as it provides power to all equipment on the MJOLNIR armor - the reactor is built into the suit and allows for nearly unlimited movement. The fusion reactor in all versions of the MJOLNIR armor are half the size of a normal fusion pack that conventional marines carry around.

Force-Multiplying Circuits: Located throughout the armor, these systems boost the force applied by the user. They make hand-to-hand combat easier, but also make the armor difficult to adjust to; a slight motion can be translated into a potentially harmful one if not conducted correctly. For this reason it is only possible for Spartans to use this armor, as their strengthened bodies are able to withstand the increased power and speed of movement, which, in un-augmented human bodies, results in broken bones or death, due to spasms caused by the pain of broken bones.

Reactive Circuits: Reactive Circuits are systems installed directly linked to the Spartan Neural Interface. They amplify the wearer's reaction time by connecting directly to the thoughts of the wearer, making it much easier to control and allowing for the soldier to be both more efficient and have a higher survival rate in combat.

Power Supply Control Unit: The Power Supply Control Unit controls the power supply of the armor.

Spartan Neural Interface: The Spartan Neural Interface is an upgrade of the standard Neural Interface that is used by the UNSC SPARTAN-II super soldiers. The Spartan Neural Interface was implanted in the Spartans upon the reception of their MJOLNIR Mark V armor. It is assumed that, like the Neural Interface from which it is derived, it may not be removed without advanced surgery or killing the host. In addition to the standard functions of a Neural Interface, the Spartan Neural Interface is unique in that it is designed to allow an AI to directly interface with the Spartan's brain. Therefore, the AI is said to reside both inside the armor and inside the wearer's mind. Essentially, it is in both places at once. The interface allows the AI access to most of the suit's internal systems, though the Spartan has override control. The AI is capable of significantly improving the data transfer rate between the motor cortex of the Spartan and the MJOLNIR's processing unit, further improving the Spartan's already lightning-quick reaction time. The AI Data Crystal Chip is inserted into a socket near the base of the Spartan's skull in the MJOLNIR armor.

The only Spartans confirmed to receive and utilize the interface is John-117, Victor-101, and Naomi-010. John-117 used it to integrate Cortana, and this has proven vital over the course of the Halo trilogy. Victor-101 used it to integrate Iona. Naomi-010 used it integrate Black Box to fight the Kig-yar on a cruiser.

SPI:

Introduction:
The Semi-Powered Infiltration armor, (SPI armor), is an experimental armor system used by the United Nations Space Command. It was developed for use by the SPARTAN-IIIs. Though more advanced than the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers' body armor, it is far less advanced and less powerful than the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor used by the SPARTAN-IIs. Its main benefit is that it is drastically cheaper to produce than the MJOLNIR armor. The SPI armor was designed with an emphasis on stealth rather than on raw power. It features special photo-reactive panels that mimic the surrounding textures, effectively being the UNSC equivalent to the Covenant's Active camouflage systems. It has been described as "part legionnaire mail, part tactical body armor, and part chameleon" by both Tom-B292 and Dr. Catherine Halsey.

SPI Mark I:
The SPI Armor Mark I was used by the SPARTAN-IIIs of Alpha Company. It featured hardened plates and photo-reactive panels. Though advanced compared to standard UNSC infantry armor, it could only take a few glancing blows before failing. It featured full body armor with an enclosed helmet and heads-up display, and a supply of breathable atmosphere; though only enough for seven minutes, compared to the MJOLNIR armor’s oxygen supply of ninety minutes. It was also equipped with a cushioning layer of liquid nanocrystals that provided more ballistic protection than three centimeters of Kevlar diamond weave, without the bulk. The featured photo-reactive panels gave the Spartans of Alpha Company a rough equivalent to Active camouflage. The camouflage patterns, however, shifted irregularly and imperfectly, which made the photo-reactive panels inferior compared to the Covenant's Active camouflage technologies.

SPI Mark II:
The SPI Armor Mark II was a more advanced version of the SPI Mark I, first used by the drill instructors of Beta Company, and then by the SPARTANs of Beta Company. They had new photo-reactive coating to boost their camouflaging properties. There were also numerous experimental refits to the ballistic gel layers, upgraded software suites, and other functions. Although the new photo-reactive coating could mimic a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, it was still sensitive to overload, so the wearer would still be vulnerable for several seconds after a flashbang or plasma hit while the panels reset. It was proposed in 2537 for Alpha Company, but the request was denied because the armor was over budget. After Alpha Company's pyrrhic victory in Operation: PROMETHEUS, the Mark II SPI armor was approved for mass production. At the time of Gamma Company's augmentation, system adjustments (upgrades including improved ballistics gel inner layer, updated software suites and new photo-reactive panels) were being beta tested, and were scheduled to be installed within a year of the augmentation procedure.

SPI Mark III:
Built after the war the SPI Armor Mark III was a more advanced version of the SPI Mark I and SPI Mark II. They have new Active Camouflage captured during the war to boost their camouflaging properties. There were also numerous experimental refits to the ballistic gel layers, upgraded software suites, Energy shielding and other functions. It was proposed in 2553 for covert stealth operations behind enemy lines for both ONI and Special Forces personnel, the Mark III SPI armor was approved for mass production by numerous corporations who also build the NEXTGEN MJOLNIR suits. At the time of Gamma Company's augmentation, system adjustments (upgrades including improved ballistics gel inner layer, updated software suites, energy shielding, and active camo) were being beta tested, and were scheduled to be installed within a year of the augmentation procedure. The Spartan-III's of Gamma company were issued the armor and are used in the Spartan-IV program for covert operations requiring the Spartan-III's expertise in stealth operations.

Advantages:
The armor is significantly cheaper and easier to mass produce than MJOLNIR armor.

The early systems includes photo-reactive panels that act as an Active camouflage for the wearer. The Mark III suit has captured active camouflage technology that was installed and improved upon by Forerunner Huragok (Engineers)

The armor is easier to transport, because it is not as bulky or as heavy as the MJOLNIR armor
.
The armor has an efficient cooling system and is significantly difficult to detect even with thermal scanners.

The faceplate has an automatic 5x zoom ability.

The Mark III suit has an energy shielding system and has the capability to house a ship grade AI

Disadvantages:
The Mark I and Mark II suits had no energy shielding system, unlike the SPARTAN-IIs' MJOLNIR Mark V and Mark VI models, making the user far more vulnerable to enemy fire and a major contributor to the high fatality rate of the SPARTAN-III's. The exception to this limitation could be found in the SPARTAN-III Headhunters: their experimental armor was known to be equipped with energy shields, due to their elite nature and value. However, power must be drawn from the energy shields to recharge the suit's Active camouflage module. The Mark III's suit corrected the error from the experimental Headhunters suits making these suits obsolete

It does not grant the SPARTAN-IIIs enhanced strength, speed or agility, unlike MJOLNIR.

Since the photo-reactive plates on the Mk I and Mk II suits take time to recover after explosions such as a flashbang grenade and plasma hits, the SPARTAN-III is visible until the plates recover. With the exception of the Headhunters' suits, the SPI armor does not feature true Active camouflage systems.

It is made of a less durable, less dense alloy than MJOLNIR armor: Kelly-087 dented Holly-G003's chest plate with her fist when first encountering the SPARTAN-IIIs.

The SPI Mark I and Mark II armor has an air supply that will last only seven minutes, while the MJOLNIR and SPI Mark III each have an air supply which can sustain a wearer for ninety minutes.

The Mark I and Mark II SPI armor cannot be used for long periods of time without the cooling system failing.

the Mark I-II suits lack the ability to support an onboard Artificial intelligence construct, unlike the Mark V, Mark VI, Black models of the MJOLNIR armor, and the SPI Mark III.

Spartan MIA Protocol or ONI Directive 930:

Introduction:
ONI Directive 930 is a UNSC regulation regarding the reporting of SPARTAN-II fatalities. It created a tradition which eventually extended to the SPARTAN-IIIs as well. When the UNSC went public with the SPARTAN-II program, the Office of Naval Intelligence feared that reports of Spartan losses would cause a crippling loss of morale throughout the UNSC. To prevent this, ONI Section Two issued a directive requiring the falsification of any circumstances regarding the deaths of Spartans, specifically, it banned the application of KIA status to Spartan personnel. The protocol created and maintained the myth that Spartans never die, and led to the common use of the bitterly ironic phrase "Spartans never die" among the Spartans themselves. This has not gone unnoticed by the Covenant, whose members (including Prophets) often refer to Spartans as "demons", due to their ability to kill thousands of Covenant infantry at a time without death.

The Protocol:
Office of Naval Intelligence Section Two Directive 930
To maintain morale among the forces of the UNSC, any Spartan casualties are to be listed as Missing In Action (MIA) or Wounded In Action (WIA), but never Killed In Action (KIA).

Application to SPARTAN-IIIs
Just before his death, SPARTAN-II Kurt-051 lists the status of two deceased SPARTAN-III's as MIA, "adhering to the tradition of never listing a fallen Spartan as "killed in action". However, this was likely more sentimental than official, as ONI Directive 930 was specific to the SPARTAN-IIs' publicity. In fact, the SPARTAN-III program was never even intended to go public due to concerns about a negative effect on morale and faith in the UNSC.

Biography: Jack was a young and sick boy and like most Spartan IIIs, he was an orphan. When he was picked up for the Spartan III project, many people believed he would die on the field immediately due to his small size and strength. Once he became a full fledged Spartan III they sent him on various suicide missions like they were designed to do. He was the only one to make it out alive of most of them and had wiped out a large amount of enemy forces on his own after his teammates would be killed and completed each mission with ease. He quickly ascended the ranks and was classified as Hyper-Lethal. He would always be asked, "Why weren't you a 2?" because of this. Throughout the years he was assigned to the rank of Captain in the Navy.

He had only just seen her that day, before like all Spartan-II's was kidnapped from his home on Earth as he slept and taken to Reach's secure training facility to mold him into a Spartan-II Commando, when he woke up and saw Dr. Halsey telling him what he would become he just sat there as he saw some of the kids try and get up to leave only to be forced down by their handlers as he was thinking about his family. As the years wore on he trained hard with his fellow Spartan candidates till one day Chief Mendez took him aside and spoke to him about his next mission, The Chief's tone was worried something Justin never heard in his voice, then he found out why. The Augmentation procedure worked on Justin but he was one of the slowest members of the team to recover, Chief Mendez and his other teammates were worried that he and Kelly-087 might not make it and took turns standing by his and her bedside at all times. Finally when he recovered he stood by Kelly's bedside holding her hand until she recovered, refusing to leave her side he even risked courts martial when Mendez ordered him to get rest and food. He later surrendered himself for disciplinary action after Kelly was recovered, Mendez told him that it wouldn't be necessary as he was looking out for a wounded teammate and that he would have done the same thing. After he and the other surviving Spartan-IIs recovered on the UNSC Atlas he saw action against insurgents until 2525 when Humanity encountered the Covenant. After he got issued his MJOLNIR MK IV Armor he was in the other Pelican dropship with the spare suits retreating from the battle while the Master Chief, Kelly, and Sam-034 went aboard the cruiser and detonated it from inside, after that he saw constant warfare between the insurrection and the Covenant shortly during the battle of Reach his squad was cut off from Red teams established fall back point it was at this time when he was overpowered by a hunter pair and was captured and constantly berated by the Elite Shipmaster about the "Key to Luminous Salvation which my fellow Demons have taken" He gave them nothing except his name rank and serial number and asked about his squad of Spartans only to find out they had been killed.

He was a happy child from what he remembers always playing outside in the tall grass, running a mock, climbing up trees and falling down. His most prominent memory is that of jumping of the house and falling into the pool, all he thought about was how his mother would hold him and comfort him afterwards. During training all he could think about was that memory its what got him going through the training and the enhancements over the years, and in combat.
Additional Info:Head strong and fancy free, young Rico didn't take to the command structure given to him by his superiors. It made him a better fighter as he kept getting up after being knocked down. It also made him more expendable as a unit as getting rid of him became a priority to his commanders. Over time being expendable gave Rico a chance to prove his worth and granted him opportunities that allowed for advancement in rank and prestige.

Biography: A former member of the ODST and Marine Corps, this Spartan IV saw her share of combat fighting the Covenant forces on different worlds. She didn't have a pleasant childhood after her home was destroyed by Covenant forces, but she grew up fast in boarding homes and foster homes. She made her way through the educational system and as soon as she was old enough she entered the service, she was smart and fast she was even offered squad leader position in training which she did well at. But to her it was just another obstacle to cross to getting back at the enemy. After training she went into the corp for a few years before she had enough reputation to put in for the ODST, being reckless and precise with her weapons allowed her to move up quickly. That and the fact the life expectancy during the war for a commanding officer was usually short. After the war when the Spartan IV program opened she applied and despite much opposition she was excepted by ONI first before she made it to the Spartan program. Once ONI was done with their training her application to the Spartan Program was reviewed and accepted.

Weapons: M395 Designated Marksman Rifle, M7S/Caseless Submachine Gun
Class: Spartan III
Armor: MJOLNIR GEN2
Military Operational Specialty: Pilot, Close Quarters Combat Specialist, Infiltration, SpecOps
Biography: Naku was born on the planet of Jericho VII. He lived a life of happiness with his family. At the age of 7, that all changed. Unknown reports of ships entering the system, destroying any of the comm buoys that they encountered had people in a state of panic. The available UNSC ships that where refueling and rearming sent out Long Swords to investigate the situation, hoping to repel any rebel attacks that might possibly happen with the war with the Covenant going on. Reports of Covenant forces in system caused all the happiness to end. As the planet was being evacuated, UNSC forces fought to protect the civilians as they attempted to escape. Naku was separated from his parents during the evacuation, as a spartan rescued him and his family from a group of covanant forces. With the promise of seeing his parents again, the spartan saw to his safety on board a UNSC Pelican that took him off-world and on to the UNSC Resolute. He watched from the observation deck as his planet was glassed by the covenant forces before they left the system perminently. He later found out that his parents had not made it to any of the evac centers before the glassing. He was approached by "men in black" as he would call them, and was offered the chance for vengeance. Naku joined the Spartan III program after that and was Squad lead of Fire team Katana. While on Onyx, competing for top honors against Fire Team Gladius and Saber. He was approached by a forerunner Sentinel during the exercise, spoken to in a language he did not understand. Naku responded with "I don't understand what you mean." The construct responded with a weapon unknown to his team. Fighting back, he was unable to save his team or himself, as the construct, know as a Sentinel, killed him and his team. He was then taken by the construct to a forerunner slip-space Stasis Pod, which he was later discovered by Dr. Halsey, Blue Team and Saber team. Once they were taken off of Onyx, Naku was revived along with his fire team thanks to Halsey. When requested to join the Spartan IV program, he accepted, and requested for an upgrade of armor, receiving the Gen II Spartan Variation.
Additional Info: Naku has a tendency of being quiet outside of combat situations. Though he is sociable with people he knows, he tends to remain focused on the battlefield, and distant out of the battlefield. He rather remain alone then to lose more friends or family. He's been known to be a specialist in Close Combat Specialist, and an excellent Pilot.
