Inia stretched, toes spreading apart and curling. It was a lazy afternoon, hot and dry in the savannah heat. She still hadn't reached the desert yet, though once night hit the lioness would most likely be back amongst the sands by the next morning. Despite not being in the desert, the afternoon temperature was doing a fine job of making Inia feel at home. Currently she was resting underneath a clump of trees in the shade, the very tip of her tail just barely touching the surface of a small pool of water. She had just woken up from a nap, a little earlier than usual. It was still too hot to be out traveling. The lioness would have to wait at least another hour or two before she could set out again. Humming quietly to herself, Inia began swiping her tongue over a patch of sleep-tousled fur on her chest. She hadn't given herself a full grooming in a few days. Now was as good a time as ever. The female tackled her front legs first, biting at any ticks that jumped onto her while walking in the savannah's grasses.

It was hot. Hotter than Tahir could stand. He lay limp in the pitiful shade of a patch of long grass, panting so hard his body wracked with the effort. He could barely muster the energy to flick his ears at passing sounds. He was very near a watering hole, where prey passed to and fro, but he had no desire at all to exhaust himself chasing anything in this godforsaken sun.
Saliva had all but evaporated from the heat. Tahir smacked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Dry as bone. He let out a soft growl and peeled himself up off the grass. Head low and eyes glazed, unfocused, he dragged himself paw by paw toward the watering hole. He watched nothing, saw nothing, but the beautiful clear liquid dancing in front of his eyes. An elephant could have walked across his path and he wouldn’t have noticed.
Whining, he flopped unceremoniously to the banks edge and submerged his muzzle in the water. He lapped furiously at its surface, body shivering in pleasure as the crystal cool liquid made its way down his gullet. Finally, after several long moment of nothing but sloppy drinking, he rocked back to his haunches and sighed with contentment.
Tahir finally took in his surroundings. Alone but for some birds and a single lioness grooming herself in the sun. How she had the energy to do so was beyond him.
He sank back to the ground, wetting his belly fur in the lake, and spoke,” It’s much too dry and dusty a day to pretty yourself up, lioness.”

Inia's violet eyes snapped up at the sound of another's voice. It was a wolf, the bottom of his fur dripping with water. She regarded him for a moment, frowning slightly at his comment. It was never "too" anything to not "pretty herself up." Grooming wasn't about looking pretty anyways. Her mother had taught her from a very early age that proper groomings helped keep one healthy. She had known more than one lion who had fallen ill because they hadn't bothered to pick the bugs out of their coat. The lioness all but curled her lip as she surveyed the wolf's fur. It was tangled, snarled, and covered in ticks. Inia could have sworn to Ra himself that she could see the fleas jumping about even from where she was sitting. The canine was absolutely filthy. He obviously hadn't given himself a good "prettying up" in quite some time. The thought made her shudder. How someone could just let their fur become that tangled was beyond her. "The shade is cool, and if I don't get them off, the bugs make my fur itch." Inia answered. She scraped the last tick off of her leg for punctuation, burying it in the sand. The lioness drew her gaze back up to the wolf, lips pursed in slight disapproval of the condition of the canine's fur. "A sensation you seem to be familiar with." She would bet that his coat housed an entire colony of fleas, and probably more ticks than a sick lion had on their ears. Disgusting. It made her paws itch just as much as the bugs did, making her want to pin him down and claw all of them off.
