Beta smiled as she stood on a hilltop, gazing into the meadow ahead of her. Flowers speckled the green grass with splotches of color, and the sun made the dew sparkle. It was a little farther than she was used to going, but it was worth the sight. As long as she returned to home before it was too late, Serenity wouldn't be that worried about her. The mare had taken a liking to these solo walks. These little adventures were a welcome distraction to the absence of her best friend, Haides, who'd gone on a journey of his own. She was about to head down into the meadow when she noticed something in the sky. She paused, looking up to identify what it was. It was too big to be a bird, and it's wings didn't seem to be feathered... But it wasn't nighttime, so it couldn't be a bat. Was it an Azrien? But she'd only seen Azrien with feathered wings. Were there ones with bat wings too?

Reth flew in the skies as if he owned them, his wings propelling him forward with strong, powerful thrusts. He closed his eyes as the wind rushed against his frame, his hair pushing back and moving against his neck. He opened his eyes briefly and looked down noticing a figure. Strange...it almost blended in with the grasslands save for the red and light greens in parts of it.
Intrigued, he started his descent flying hard and fast to the ground as he kept his wings close to his frame. He only snapped them open when he came close landing quite harshly and yet with a rigid discipline on the ground. He flapped his wings for a moment holding his head high, red eyes staring and studying the frame before him...that he found to be female. She appeared interesting and the white speck he had seen on his descent turned into a flower upon closer inspection. His tail flicked idly as thoughts went through his mind. She was...interesting...pretty...his head tilted a little as he kept still waiting for her reaction to him as he stood silent and unwavering.

The flying creature was coming closer to her. Now that it was, Beta confirmed her theory that it was an Azrien. But wasn't it a little too close? She shook her head and backed up with a snort at the sudden gust of wind blowing dust into her face. When she recovered, she stared up at the winged stallion in front of her. He didn't make a sound and had a horn sprouting from his forehead, two traits that reminded her quite a bit of Haides. However, this stallion had much brighter coloring. He didn't seem hostile, at least. "Hello," she greeted pleasantly. "I'm Beta. What's your name?"

"Hello, I'm Beta. What's your name?" That was it? Where creatures on this plain daft?! It wasn't exactly the welcome message he wanted to receive nor the reaction she was giving very much like what he had envisioned for himself. Reth withheld the sigh he wanted to expel so much. The stallion's red eyes studied the creature in front of him before allowing himself to speak. "I am Reth." His voice was calm, a little deepening as if in attempt to show authority. His wings were flexing a moment before fully relaxing a this sides, the wind gently brushing against his bangs and tail as he stood firm on his landing spot. "Out for a stroll?" The words came out of his mouth before he could stop himself. What was he doing making conversation with a commoner? He imagined himself hearing the worst of it from his father which made him cringe slightly on the inside.

"Nice to meet you, Reth," Beta replied cheerfully. He seemed a little irritated... he really reminded her of Haides. She nodded to his question. "Mm-hmm! I like going on walks. I get to find great places like this!" She gestured to the meadow, smiling brightly. "What about you? I've never seen you before."

He gave an acknowledged nod. Yes it was certainly nice to meet him considering that she was...well nothing in his eyes. 'I've never seen you before'...Well. She was daft. Of course she had never seen him before! If she had, she probably would have remembered...unless she was really that dumb. At her question, his mind couldn't help but turn with unbecoming imaginations. 'I'm plotting on how to end your pathetic life...' He thought humorously to himself. Reth couldn't help but give a little chuckle at his thought which she must have taken in a different way. "I'm sure you've never seen me before considering you don't have wings...I tend to fly more than walk...flying keeps me...centered..." His dark eyes studied her for a moment. Sure he enjoyed to run, but flying was his real passion. It was what made him revered in his tribe. He wondered if those with wings were not as revered as he was. Pity. It should be that way. Reth's tail flicked, his ears perked forward for a moment as his wings shuffled on his back. There was that strange, awkward silence again... "I should probably go off now. Much important things to do..." He offered her a kind smile and a nod of his head before he began to walk in the direction he was heading before. Might be a time to give his wings a rest...

Beta frowned. "Centered?" What was that supposed to mean? "And if you tend to fly more, wouldn't it be more likely that I would've seen you before? You can see flying things from a lot farther away than those on the ground..." Unless you were on a hill. When his dark eyes inspected her, her turquoise ones stared evenly back at him. She tilted her head and watched him leave before trotting over and falling into step next to him. "Is it fun to fly?" she asked, apparently not taking his excuse to stop talking to her as a goodbye.

Oh he had finally done it! Reth was proud of himself that he had finally gotten rid of that pesky mare...
Well until he turned and found her eyes again. Damnation! Was she even more daft than he gave her credit for?! Mayhaps she was touched very much in the head. He flared his nostrils looking at her with an irritated intensity of a thousand burning suns. "Yes. Centered. Focused. It keeps me focused." He probably should not use big words around her anymore. "Not unless I fly at night or directly in the path of the sun. You wouldn't look directly in the path of sunlight would you? Everyone knows that's stupid." Well...probably except for this one since she hadn't buzzed off yet. What was he, carrion?!
Oh the questions. She must have been fun as a foal. "Yes. I prefer it rather to walking..." 'Then why aren't you flying now?' He argued with himself trying to speed up his pace. Maybe she would get tired and go away. There was strength and noise in silence after all...

Beta's own nostrils flared a bit, but her turquoise gaze seemed to drown all of the irritation Reth's eyes threw at her. "Of course I wouldn't look into the sun. I'm not dumb. But it would've been possible for me to see you at night and not recognize you, especially if there was a full moon." She, Haides, and Jaromila had loved stargazing together, an activity that she continued even in her best friend's absence. She sighed at his reply to her flying question. "Lucky..." Her eyes stared into the scenery with a dreamy look, imagining what it would be like.
Beta picked up her pace when she noticed Reth going faster. "What important things do you need to do?" It had to be really important if he was trying to hurry. But he must've been at least a bit tired if he wasn't flying there...

Reth sighed. Loudly. With a small hint of an obnoxious tone. She obviously was not getting the point. His ears flicked and his tail waved behind him as he looked back over to her, their gaze meeting again. His wings ruffled a little at his side as he gave a brief huff. "Well. Would it be possible that your eyes play tricks on you? That maybe you didn't see me at all? The moon's light is sure as the sun on some nights, but she does reach everything. Not even the darkest shadows." His voice had gotten slightly deep and menacing at this point as if trying to scare her away. Ignoring her obviously wasn't going to work.
For once as she stared away he looked at her. Actually studied her. If she was quite more often than she was, she might actually look appeasing to him. But then the mouth would open and his fantasy of her would end quite quickly. "Yes. Quite lucky." Reth gave a brief grunt stretching his frame a little as they strode at a brisk pace. 'Kill my sister. Make her brood suffer. Take over anything she loves." The stallion thought morbidly giving a wicked grin to himself. But outwardly, he scowled. "Things that pertain to family matters. Nothing you would know." Reth snorted a little as he seemed to go in no particular direction. Why in damnation was he so tired?!

"Maybe. I could've mistaken you for a bat," Beta replied flatly. Her eyes sparkled as she glanced at him, as if she knew something he didn't. "And of course moonlight doesn't reach the darkest shadows; if it did, they wouldn't be the darkest, now would they?" Her own voice had grown a tone that gave her an air of dark playfulness, as if indulging Reth's menacing side. Her gaze went hard as he spoke of "family matters" before looking elsewhere. "... You would be surprised." She was well-versed in family matters. Too well-versed, quite frankly.
Suddenly she stepped closer, her green pelt brushing against his orange one. She was quiet for a moment before informing him, "You need to stop. At your current pace, you'll collapse soon without proper rest and nourishment." Just as abruptly as she'd leaned into him, Beta removed herself and continued walking normally.

"Hmph. I wouldn't have doubted it." Reth sneered looking at her sideways for a moment. She didn't seem all that bright...wait, was she mocking him? Her tone changed and it caused him to pay a little more attention to her - the prat. "...Of course not. There needs to be a balance...." "and my balance has shifted...there needs to be a correction..." His mind stewed on the idea of finally come across the mare and ripping her apart slowly. His attention was brought back to the mare in his company. "Oh really? Then tell me, what do you know of family matters? Maybe you could teach me something." The last part was more sarcastic than anything, but she was starting to rub on him.
Speaking of rubbing, the mare had all of a sudden broken into his personal bubble. He just about stopped and dropped right then and there from the surprise. Her touch was surprisingly...warm and comforting. How long had it been since anyone had caressed him like that? His wings shifted against his back as he gave a growl of a snort. "I can't stop. Not until she lies lifeless underneath me." He turned to face her this time, but slowed his pace feeling her words like weights on his hooves. She was right in a sense...he was exhausted. As she stepped away, there was a nagging feeling of bereft on the place where their bodies had met. He wanted her to do it again, but he dare not say another word. He can't be attaching himself to warm bodies left and right now could he? "What would you suggest I do?" He said after a moments silence between them.

Beta was quiet for a moment, then... "I was abandoned as a foal. My mother took my two older brothers and left me for dead. I met my best friend Haides when he saved my life and traveled with me across the entirety of the neutral lands to the north where we were adopted by a kind-hearted mare. I now have eight sisters, three brothers, and two uncles. I know plenty of family matters."
The mare suddenly darted forward and cut him off, letting the larger Azrien collide with her. "What do I suggest you do?" she repeated calmly. "I suggest you rest and tell me exactly whose death you think will bring you happiness." As an afterthought, she added, "And if you try to continue, I'll knock you over and make you rest." Reth was big, but he was tired and didn't have her strength. She wasn't going to take 'no' for an answer.

Reth could somewhat understand her pain. Even though he was considered the pride of his father's lineage, he wasn't the oldest. His birthright had been taken from him. This female didn't even get the chance..But it seemed she had her start and here she was all annoying as all hell. As rough as her past was, she seemed to be doing fine. He gave a slight grunt nodding toward her. "My sympathies..You seem to be doing fine for yourself, however. I am sure you do your adoptive family proud." Reth grunted as if trying to bring about a bright side to her troubles.
He started forward again when he suddenly knocked into her. He about fell over at the sudden roadblock. He glared hard at her with red eyes a little irritated. "What the hell, Beta?" Reth snarled a little as his wings shuffled along his back. However, she came back with a voice just as stern slightly reminding him of his mother. This mare was stronger than she looked and her threat made him laugh. He chuckled for a while slowly shaking his head giving a snort. "Sure. I will rest...only if you lie with me." Reth curved around her before collapsing onto the ground, flaring his wings out to stretch them. He took a breath and stretched his neck out closing his eyes as he rested. After a moment's pause and waiting until she got comfortable beside him, he spoke, his wing covering her.
"My father's name is Roarke Tynian. My mother is a Dragon Priestess named Draxia. Once every seven years, Dragon Priestesses are allowed to mate in an effort to strengthen the warrior race. They can only mate with the Divine Warrior caste. My father is a part of that. Before then he was simply a normal warrior with no foals to call his own. So on a whim, he took a female - a commoner - and mated with her. The mating resulted in only one foal out of four living. That filly is my sister and the oldest of my father's line. For a warrior, it is considered bad luck to have a daughter and no sons." Reth had to control his voice for a moment as he curled his body closer against Beta's. More for comfort and pleasure to the senses rather than anything. In truth, all of his 'companions' had been males, including his manservant Stryker. He had never once lain with a female. There was something about the body of one that intrigued him.
He cleared his throat to continue. "Afterwards he drove his lover and his child away not bearing to see what had been produced. Unfortunately, each birth is documented so he could not say that the filly wasn't his. Besides, she bore his eyes and his unique marking of stripes. Roarke was about the only azrein in that tribe that had stripes and red eyes. In any case, he worked himself to gain rank within the warriors soon becoming Divine. It was then that he was given the chance to mate with a Priestess. Draxia chose my Roarke whether out of pity or lust is anyone's guess. But their union brought about myself and two others. I believe they were taken away as I was the only one with wings. I was blessed by the dragon that my mother had been praising and for that I am considered high on my father's lineage. But I am not the first. Parents cannot kill their children, it is forbidden. Only children of the same father may fight and kill for a chance to claim the first born and therefore birthright. I cannot become a Divine Warrior and claim what is rightfully mine until my sister is dead. He gave her the name Kainda and that is who I search for." Reth then raised his head and turned his gaze toward the mare that was beside him, dark reds meeting gentle blues. "Do you understand now?" His head tilted as he felt his body relaxing. It was a good thing he was tired...

Beta nodded to his sympathies, smiled at his laughter, and gave into his request to lie with him. The wing across her back was comforting, and she instinctively nestled into Reth's side. She listened carefully to the story, mental gears turning behind her turquoise eyes. "... Mostly," she replied to his question at the end. "There isn't a way for her to give you that birthright without you killing her?" she asked, absently rubbing her head against Reth's neck. "A way for Kainda to give consent and freely give you that claim?"
