Mheetu was returning from the border of the pride, after a long and hot afternoon patrolling the area. He shook his head a few times to get the dust of his coat and mane and before he knew it, the Scout was heading towards his parents’ den. It was such a natural thing for him to do that he didn’t even realize where he was heading until he could actually see the den ahead. The young lion stopped and sighed, chuckling before he turned to leave and started making his way to his own den. His parents’ home had felt a little too busy lately with his younger siblings all growing into adolescents and Mheetu decided to consciously avoid that spot until most of them had started looking for dens of their own. And yet… he often ended up there anyway as if his legs suddenly took over and forced him to return to the place he belonged. It was something that both amused and frustrated the Scout who liked to think of himself as an independent individual.

Mia had just come out of her den, she'd slept in, and felt that she needed some time to feel the sun on her pelt and get the dirt under her paws. One, two, three, four. She counted the acacia trees, which provided the shade in the midday heat. She decided to have a stroll around the Pridelands for today, maybe a trip to the water hole, to then reside in the shade and do some more counting, maybe! Some found it weird but she found it helped to keep her mind active. Also the chocolate lioness did not yet feel the pangs of hunger or the need to replenish her food stock, so she simply made her way cheerfully down the dusty path further onto the lands she'd called home since she was a tiny cub.

Mheetu had just decided to go see the hunters before returning to his den when he noticed a chocolate lioness in his path. His younger self might’ve felt a bit shy to approach a stranger for no actual reason but the young Scout had grown in confidence as well in size and he had no such qualms now. Without even thinking, he was walking in her direction.

“Hello!” he smiled and called out to the lioness, quickly closing the distance between them. He still kept a respectful distance from the chocolate lioness. “I don’t think I’ve ever talked to you but I spend a lot of time at the border. I’m Mheetu.”

"Oh, Hi!" She was soon pleasantly ambushed by a lion whose pelt bore such a resemblance to the land that she probably wouldn't have seen him until he was right under her nose. She smiled widely. One of the things she loved about her pride was that it was large, and very friendly. It was entirely possible to have a new conversational partner at every outing, whether it was fleeting or for a good few minutes. That was all dependent on personalities, of course.

She guessed from the males admittance at being around the border a lot that he was probably a scout. "I don't think we have met before." She said shyly. "I'm Mia, are you a scout?" Mia hoped Mheetu didn't mind her asking, but she was often interested in the work of others, especially for the pride.

Sorry! I didn't get a notice for some reason!

"I am." The lion said proudly, puffing out his chest a little. He loved being a Scout even though there wasn't much to do when he was out patrolling now that the pride was going through peaceful times. Well, if those hyenas ever proved troublesome again, Mheetu was determined to protect everyone within the borders. "Things have been quiet at the border, thankfully. Are you huntress?"

Mheetu was always happy to meet someone from outside his family which was harder than it looked as he was related to half the pride. Sometimes it seemed he couldn't take a couple of steps without bumping into a family member.

"I have eight brothers and sisters. Some are hunters so maybe you know them. I have a few younger siblings as well but they haven't taken up their ranks yet." Mheetu grinned widely. Everyone showed interesting reactions when he told them about his huge family and he expected Mia to be no exception. His parents were nothing if not prolific, that much was certain.

"Oh, that's really interesting! I am a huntress, yes" She smiled, but looked rather dissapointed. She'd always expected that maybe she should do more, she'd love to teach others, maybe that was something she could go into one day. To teach others the wonder of numbers, counting and adding everything together was her idea of joy, although she realised that it was not everyones.

"Eight brothers and sisters, my, that's quite a lot!" She was glad to meet someone that also had a large family. For awhile it wasn't the usual situation with a lot of other lions she met, they were usually from smaller families. "I have..." Mia thought hard for a moment, having such a large family she hadn't met most of them, as they were alot older. She was one of the youngest. One.. two.. three... four.. She counted rhythmically. almost humming as she went.

"I think I have sixteen brothers and sisters," She nodded. "But I can't be sure, as I haven't met them all, and I believe one of them died, sadly, before I could meet her." Her father had told her countless tales, and although her litter of eight was large, she had brothers and sisters that came to visit as she was growing up. She loved the idea of large families, to her it felt very secure.

Mheetu had never been told that someone had a larger family so it was his turn to look surprised. There was a first time for everything it seemed. His siblings would mock him for all eternity if they saw him with such a dumbstruck expression as Mia started counting.

"Sixteen?" he repeated in a tone of amazement, bareky refraining from adding a Are you sure? to that simple question. He recovered quickly though. "I'm sorry about that. Mine are all alive... well, one left but hopefully, he's okay..."

He smiled playfully, tilting his head to the side as he eyed the chocolate lioness' interesting leg markings.

"I thought my family was the only one with these crazy-sized litters. I guess I'm not the only one then." That would teach him on bragging about family to random strangers.

She nodded gently. "Yup, it may be more, but I didn't grow up with most of them, just my litter, but there were eight of us." It wasn't something she bragged about, really, she found it as interesting as everybody else did. As she had so many siblings she wasn't close with all of them, they were just a bit family unit that passed in and out, but primarily lived their own life. Still, family life was comforting. "I'm sure he'll be okay!" She liked to remain positive, especially as she didn't know where most of her siblings were, either. "It's a nice thing to have in common, I think. I like big families, it means you have more people you can rely on, in some ways."

“Well, I have eight littler siblings so we were nine in total. I guess I won there.” Mheetu chuckled and then grinned widely. Being competitive was a common affliction of someone who came from a large family, even if in his case he had come by it rather late in his life. His grin turned into a gentle smile when she agreed his brother was probably alright. Both his parents were rather large so most of his brothers and sisters carried the same fate which could be an advantage in the notoriously dangerous rogue lands. Still, size wasn’t everything and there were many kinds of dangers in the outside world. He could only hope that Bamidele was alright. ”I like big families, too. Busy dens are usually happy dens.”

“Can you imagine if both our families got together? We’d be like a mini-pride.” He chuckled again, feeling very playful for some reason. “How’s hunting by the way? It can’t be easy finding food for all of us…”

"Aha!" She smiled sheepishly. "You do win indeed." She was glad that he shared her thoughts on large families, she did not often find someone that agreed with her. Most others thought that large families were a hassle, too many mouths to feed, too much noise. Mia chuckled. "We'd make such a large group. It'd be like a big party." She giggled. "Though its hard enough getting half my family together, sometimes." This happened when people grew, and changed. "Huntings okay, its not something I really think much about, its just kinda natural, but I did have alot of sisters too, even if I was raised just by my dad." She hadn't been particularly good at hunting, but she'd had lots of support for it to not be a chore.

“Well, we were nine but there were only two girls. And Zahara was like one of the boys.” Mheetu laughed, thinking of his boyish sister. “I’m sure my other sister felt quite lonely sometimes…”

While Mheetu was curious about Mia’s mother, he thought it better to keep any questions that instantly popped into his mind to himself. They seemed to be getting alone rather nicely but those were the kind of personal questions that you only asked a close friend or simply waited for them to be provided during the course of a conversation. A light “What happened to your mother? Did she die or dump you on your father?” was sure-fire way to put a sudden stop to a friendly conversation. Besides, he too knew what it was like to grow up without a parent and this was a matter he not entirely comfortable with even if he didn’t quite realize it.

“We were raised by our mom until we were almost adolescents… my father only joined the pride during the war.” He might be smiling but his sudden avoidance of her gaze and the airs that stood on end alongside the sandy lion’s back made it clear that this was not a subject he wanted to continue. He hated to admit it but he was still a little hurt that he’d had to spend his cubhood without his father – unlike his younger siblings – and that his mother had been left alone with nine cubs to raise.

Mia was apt enough at reading body language, so knew not to press the matter further. She found it both saddening and interesting how they had been effected by the abscence of either parent, the opposite one to one another, too. She gave him a smile and a sympathetic look. "My mom died when I was only a few months old, I'm not sure how we would have survived if it wasn't for my father, he has been a very strong man, to raise all 8 of us without her." She did not doubt that he devoted his life to his children, and she had never wanted for anything, Mahiri had been a great source of comfort for Mia. She did not ask any more on his subject, but let it be known that they probably had more in common than they originally thought. Besides, It wasn't a secret, they were a large family and had been around for a long time.

Mheetu smiled softly. It was nice to have a friendly and open conversation with a stranger – well, not so much of a stranger anymore – who seemed to have so much in common with him. He felt almost obliged to return the information that she’d so kindly given him even if most of it was actually so personal that he’d never told anyone about it.

“He sounds like a great lion.” Mheetu said, not without a hint of jealousy. The obvious comparison was almost painful. “My father left before I was born and he only returned when the war was starting. Better late than never, I guess. I think we’re all glad he came back but none of us really forgave him for leaving mom like that. They didn’t know about us at the time and mom did have some support here but you know…” he shrugged, an apologetic smile now firmly in place. Perhaps that had been a little too much information. She probably had no interest in his family’s half-buried grudges.

“Hey, do you want to go get something to eat? My shift just ended so I’m a little hungry.” Change of subject: successful.

She nodded sympathetically. My, her and Mheetu did seem to have a lot in common! "Things like that can be hard on families, I have heard alot of tales, especially in times of harship." Mia was very glad her family had remained intact during the war, and that no-one had been lost, she knew a few were. "That sounds wonderful, I'm sure I can find something around here, food seems to be plentiful nowadays, even with so many mouths to feed!" She counted her steps as she moved towards the male hoping to lead them to lunch. "One, two, threee, four." She counted them aloud, and then turned to Mheetu sheepishly, she hadn't quite disclosed that little... quirk, yet.

Mheetu arched a brow, looking amused by the sudden count but he didn’t ask about it. He took it as a little joke of hers and apart from tilting his head to the side in a small sign of curiosity, he showed no further signs of acknowledgement.

“Alright, let’s go then.” The Scout said with a smile. Hopefully the hunters had brought back enough food today because he wasn’t really interested in hunting after a long day at the border.
