User ImageAutumn was getting close. It was easy to tell as the air already hinted at crisp easy breezes and the leaves looked spotted with color. It wasn't quite time to fall, though. Théo enjoyed this tease of the weather, but looked forward to the turning point.

Théo would admit to disliking the warm, dewy days of summer, but would miss the cheery sky it usually accompanied. The crisp air was easier on his feathers, however, so autumn would always be his favorite season. Plus, the changing of the seasons always brought a different surge of activity. The squirrels, for example, were running around, frantically trying to make a last ditch effort to collecting nuts.

Avani was ever curious about the world surrounding her. It was, after all, the first time she saw the seasons change. By now she had already made it into a habit to slip off without the knowledge or consent of her fidgety mother - not because she wanted to be mischievous, but because she knew Mirali would've most likely insisted on chaperoning her wherever she went.. or at the very least asked somebody else in the house to do so. While the kit was a little shy herself, she wanted to discover things on her own. Or with her friends, that was fun too.

She had noticed that some trees were slowly changing color, with just a few leaves transitioning from green to yellow or orange. The phenomenon of course fascinated her. She had read about the different seasons in books, but it was completely different to be able to experience them, herself. "I wonder where the birds are flying to.." she wondered out loud as she watched a flock of geese or something similar pass above her, too high for her to make out the exact species.

Théo had not noticed anyone come close, so it was a shock to hear a voice. He moved from behind a tree to spot the young female who was staring at the sky. Though he was not sure if her question was posed to him, he felt obligated to answer. After all, he was able to answer it.

"South," he said his own gaze now watching the sky. The birds in question were now merely a black dot, but Théo kept his eyes upward. He felt a bit bad about the possibility of startling the child in return since he had not bothered to announce his presence before speaking. "Or somewhere warm, at least. Most creatures don't like the cold." Théo scrunched up his nose like he was about to sneeze before glancing down to offer the girl a friendly smile.

((Terribly sorry for the holdup, had some.. issues for a while. ; 3; ))
Avani was a little surprised to suddenly hear someone respond to her rhetorical question. She spun around to see who the voice belonged to, and saw a rather kind looking adult fox. She bowed politely to the stranger before speaking up again.
"Oh! I-I've read from books that winter is really cold. I've n-never experienced it before, so I wouldn't know.." Her ears were flicking back and forth somewhat nervously, since she didn't deal with adults outside those in her house very often. "D-do all birds go south? Do other animals do it too?" she asked him then. She'd not come across that information yet, on her own, and the little female loved to learn of new things.

Suddenly she realized she'd not introduced herself yet. "Oh, um, um, my name is Avani!" she said with another polite bow, wagging her tail.

Théo was glad that he had not scared the kit too much. He nodded at her bow, finding it a quirky way to say 'hello'. He then chuckled, amused by the thought of someone's first experience with winter. "Then you're in for a treat. The cold will n** at your nose, but the feeling of it warming once you head back in is the best. Plus, if we're lucky and it snows, a whole new world of play is opened up."

Théo appreciated the kit's sense of curiosity as she asked questions. "Most birds do," he said much like a teacher would. "There are some, though, that either already live in the warm places and need never leave, or are able to adapt to the cold and don't bother to move their butts." Théo finished with a chuckle. "Meanwhile other animals do as they please or what is necessary to survive."

Again Théo smiled. "It is nice to meet you, Avani. My name is Théo." He paused, as if wondering how best to put something. "Not to put a damper on your fun, but is your family aware you are out here alone?"

Avani's eyes glimmered as she tried to imagine the feelings the adult male was describing to her. It getting cold didn't seem all that great, but she really was looking forward to experiencing snow. All those pictures she'd seen in her books.. it had to be even more amazing in real life.

"Hm.." the kit pondered for a moment then. "So some birds n-never come here at all.. s-so there must be many things I will never see u-unless I travel!" Yet another prospect that seemed incredibly exciting to her. Despite her general shyness, the little female had a strong sense of adventure in her. "I did read that some animals h-hibernate for the winter.. d-does that mean they just.. sleep?"

She smiled brightly when he introduced himself as well. Even though she was still but a child, he didn't seem to look down on her like a few adults so far had seemed to do.
"N-nice to meet you too, mr. Théo!" she answered perkily, but soon stopped and her ears dropped back in embarrassment at the male's next question.
"W-w-well, y-you see, my Mama.. she's.. she's a big worrywart, and um.. I-I've been told she's never been around kits before she had m-me, and.. she always insists on either f-following me around or sending someone as a ch-cha.. chaperone. So um.. I.. sometimes just s-slip out without anyone noticing", she explained, shifting her weight between her front paws awkwardly.
"I l-love my Mama, I do! B-but she needs time f-for herself, too.. I left a n-note saying I'll be back by sunset!" she added so Théo wouldn't think she was rebellious or irresponsible.

It wasn't hard for Théo to see the excitment the little one had in her eyes. He did not know if it was his words that were intriguing her or her own thoughts. Either way it was a joy to see a kit so alight with life. She seemed the book wormish type, with her glasses perched on her nose, so it was no doubt she had a working mind.

Avani proved him right when she asked further questions. "Yes," Théo said with a solomn head nodding, "some birds stay right where they are." He brightened as he continued, "Travel is always a vialable option if you wish to see them all."

He contemplated Avani's second question. "I believe so. Bears, for example, holes themselves up and sleep away the winter." Théo's lips pursed. "However, I believe they don't stay asleep the whole time. Kind of half-wake, check to see if it's still winter, than groan when it is." He wasn't sure if at that point if he was right or merely telling a joke. "Though my knowledge does have its limits.," Théo warned with a embarrassed smile.

Théo held in a chuckle while the kit described her situation. "Woah, there, Avani," he said, holding up his paws. "I totally understand. No need to fret. Sometimes a parent can be over-bearing." Théo's expression softened with a hint of concern. "Though I'm sure your mom is only trying her best to make sure you stay safe. A kit isn't always lucky enough to meet nice people like me."

((I sometimes take a while responding, too, so I'm quite patient <3 I'm still hoping we could get something out of this :>))

She was getting even more excited, the more Théo spoke. Yes, she had come across some of this information in books already, but it was always more fun when someone was actually talking about it! Avani had always wondered about bears. What they were like. They looked gentle and cuddly in a lot of pictures, but she had understood that they could be dangerous, too. She also wondered what it was like to try and sleep all winter..

"I wonder what hibernating is l-like", she finally said out loud. "H-have you ever tried?" she asked with a curious smile. "I know n-nobody knows everything, but.. you seem to know a lot. I'm having a-a lot of fun!" she sincerely admitted. Most of the others living in her house were too busy to read books with her, or discuss things like this with the kit. Her mother tried, of course, but she was often working to provide for Avani, as well.. so she tried not to bother her when she had spare time. In her mind, her mother deserved time on her own.

Her ears fell back a bit. It was true she hadn't considered the possibility of meeting not-so-nice people on her ventures. "Th-that's true.. But I was lucky to meet you, mister Théo!" she said, her face lighting up some again. "I hope to make friends I c-could go out with without Mama worrying.."

Théo scrunched up his nose but smiled down at Avani. "Me? Sleep the winter away? I don't think I could stand to miss the first snow fall." He stared at the sky momentarily, hoping that by saying the words, the first snow might come early. "Just waiting a few months is too much for me," he admitted with a sigh.

Turning back to Avani, Théo sobered. "Okay. Just so long as you don't go claiming me as the sole fountain of all your knowledge." Théo laughed. "Well you seem to know a lot yourself. You also know just the right questions to ask." He beamed down at the kit. "I'm glad that you're enjoying yourself. I am too."

"Yes, safety in numbers!" Théo chimed. "I might be a bit too old to be considered a friend of yours, but I'm usually in this park so if you need help, come find me." He nodded his head once before breaking out into a smile. "I'm sure you could make lots of friends, though! You certainly are a thoughtful and kind young girl to be concerned about your mother. Those are great qualities to have."

Avani nodded a few times, trying hard to imagine what it would be like to just sleep for several months in one go. She didn't think she could do it. Even if it got really really cold, she couldn't just stay in bed. No, she'd at least have to get up to read, or practice her magic. Even being ill wasn't quite enough to keep her in bed.
"N-no, I don't think I could d-do it either", she finally admitted. "It's m-much too fun to d-do things, and learn.." Maybe some day she would know a great lot of things, and others would look up to her for her knowledge. The kit thought it'd be nice, though she did feel awkward when she got too much attention from those around her.

"Th-thank you for the compliment", she responded then, happy for the praise she got. "Maybe.. m-maybe someday I'll.. know e-even more than you!" she remarked in a rather chipper manner. She liked the idea of having someone to discuss all manners of things with, and luckily Théo didn't seem patronizing or condescending towards her despite her only being a kit.

"Are friends.. n-not supposed to be much older o-or younger than yourself?" she asked then, a little confused. She herself didn't really pay age much attention, aside from knowing the older you were, the wiser you generally became. "Maybe y-you could become friends with Mama, th-then!"

Théo nodded, "Much too much to do to spend a season asleep." He then chuckled as Avani proclaimed her ambition. "That is a great goal, but you might exceed me sooner than you think." He smiled at her, secretly pleased to be admired. "But feel free to visit me and we'll test each other if you want."

"Oh!" Théo said shock coloring his word. "Your friends can be whatever age they are. I just was not sure a young kit such as yourself would be okay with having an old fuddy-duddy such as myself as a friend." He scrunched up his nose, making a silly disgusted face, when describing his age. "There are some who do not like having older friends because they're boring. I'd like to think I'm not, but it's hard to judge yourself without being biased. Though I would not mind being your mother's friend if she so wished," Théo said. "You can't be friends with someone if they don't want to be your friend, after all."

Taking a moment to check the time, Théo glanced down at Avani. "Since you are the curious type, want to ask some questions?" He wasn't sure the type of questions she'd ask, nor what he'd do if he could not answer them, but he figured he'd play it by ear. "Or we can go searching for interesting things here in the park." Théo decided it would be best to be available as a play-mate if Avani should so chose. Better him than another adult with less innocent intents.

Avani continued to wag her tail excitedly. She didn't usually get to spend time with grown-ups. And there were hardly any grown-up males where she lived, so Théo was almost like an uncle... or a father. Or, at least, this is how the kit imagined a father would be like. Someone fun to go on adventures with, but who'd still keep a watchful eye on you. Maybe she had read too many stories..
She very much liked the idea of testing each other's knowledge. She was determined to learn lots and impress Théo, now.

"B-but I don't think you're a.. an old f-fuddy-duddy! You're in-incredibly nice and y-you don't seem old!" she protested, bouncing in place a little, her glasses almost falling off her nose. "But.. but I th-think you could still also b-be friends with Mama! She d-doesn't have many friends... but s-she's really nice, too! I-I'm sure you'd get along!" She gave Théo her biggest, sweetest little girl's smile, she honestly thought her mother could use company and that Théo being friends with them both would make it easier for her to get permission to go out. "I could in-introduce you to her l-later!"

Avani then pondered for a moment. "Can.. can we g-go search for interesting things AND I a-ask questions as I come up with s-some?" she then asked, figuring it would be more fun this way, and they wouldn't have to sit still. While she was out, she did like to be active, after all. Discovering things by herself was a way of learning as well, after all. And surely Théo would help her name things she didn't yet know! And maybe later she could invite him over to introduce him to her mother..

Théo watched with high amusement as Avani bounced. "Thank you, Avani. That's very sweet of you." He chuckled softly while almost inconceivably shaking his head. It was good to know that a kit didn't think of him as old as dirt. He had been called a few things by older kits who were giving him a hard time. But it was part of the territory of hanging out in a park.

Getting back on topic, Théo nodded at Avani's suggestion. "I'd love to meet your mother later," Théo said earnestly. He felt like he should probably introduce himself to her mother at the very least. Nothing may come of it other than Avani's mother knowing who her daughter's friend was. That is, if the female didn't have an objection to the alliance and shooed Théo away.

"Of course we can!" Théo said with a brilliant smile. "I like the way you think." He winked at Avani before looking around in all directions. He pondered something before brightening up with an idea. "How about you lead this expedition~ Which way would you like to head?"

Avani smiled brightly up at the older male. She liked making others happy, and Théo seemed pleased by what she'd said. Being a good girl was what she strove for. She had already met a few not-so-pleasant individuals in the short time since emerging from her bowl, but Théo didn't seem the least bit mean or untrustworthy. On the contrary, the longer they spoke, the happier she was to have come across him. Sometimes it did scare her a little to venture out on her own, after all..

When he agreed to come meet her mother, the kit could not help but leap up in the air in her excitement, doing a small flip aided by her small wings barely capable of supporting her weight. "I-I'm sure Mama will th-think you're nice, too!" she said confidently, twirling around for a fleeting moment.

She then proceeded to look around them as well, trying to decide where they should head first. She hadn't really been around this particular area much, before, so there were surely plenty of things to see. "Um.. um.." she shifted weight between her front paws as her little mind was furiously trying to come to a decision. Then, she noticed that further down the path there was a spot where the foliage was much more red than on the surrounding trees. Maybe there was something special, there! "Let's.. let's go t-that way!" she said then, pointing a paw in her intended direction as she turned to look at Théo again with bright eyes.

Théo let out a whoop of laughter at Avani's choice of celebration. "I sure hope she does. I think I'm growing very fond of you." He smiled again, but softer and with affection in his eyes. Théo enjoyed how readily the kit expressed herself. He had first thought her the overly shy-type. Avani was proving to be a multilayered girl. Théo wondered if her mother was the same.

He waited patiently as Avani surveyed the area. Théo had to suppress his laughter again. He could almost see her mind working furiously to pick a direction. Perhaps he should have chosen for them. Théo knew that sometimes kits found it hard to focus. He decided to offer a suggestion to ease Avani's troubles, but she burst out with a decision.

"All right," Théo said, looking at the direction she indicated. "That seems like a good choice." He nodded and started, slowly, over there. "Was there a reason you chose this way?" Théo asked, deciding to attempt light conversation as they walked.
