Lani’s belly grumbled. It had been weeks since she’d eaten more than mice and her diet was beginning to take its toll on her. Her once glossy, gorgeous coat had become dull and lifeless. Her ribs were protruding just enough to show she was becoming underweight. She was hungry. There were plenty of small antelope species hanging around the savannah, and she was quick, but it would be so easy to get hurt or trip up, and there goes tons of calories wasted for nothing. She didn’t have the option of a screw up.

Sinking low in the grass, Lani narrowed her eyes and flicked her ears forward. There were plenty of prey-noises around her. Chittering rodents. The hoof clops of antelope. She whined, a pitiful, horrid noise, and flopped unceremoniously to her side.

Oh yes, what a dainty girl she was.

“I’m sick of mice,” she scoffed, pawing childishly at the air,” Too bloody crunchy!”
