It was a fine autumn morning, pleasantly cool with the promise of a warm day to come. The sun had risen far enough that the mist drifting over the lake had all but disappated, birds singing cheefully as they went about their daily business.
Subira lay on a rock shelf, sunning herself and humming cheerfully while moving her left front paw back and forth through the cool water. She was waiting for her friend Hazumi to show up so they could spend a day together. It had been awhile since she'd last seen her friend, and her body was practically humming with the anticipation of getting to see him again!

Hazumi panicked as he sped through the forest. He was late... again! Why was he always late? Why did he alway tell someone he was going to be there at some time and then never show up? You would think he would have learned by now. He wasn't sure how late he was, he just knew he was late. Rushing through the trees he headed toward where he was to see her. He hoped she was still there and that she hadn't left yet. If she did... well he didn't want to think about that. Finally he came in to the clearing where they were going to meet and was glad to see that she was still there. He smiled as he called out to her. "Subira!" Of course he was too excited to see her that he wasn't paying attention to were he was going. Once of his front paws got caught on something and he tripped. Hazumi went down head first, did a roll then landed on his stomach. Guess that would teach him not to pay attention to where he was running...

Subira's cheerful giggle filled the air as she stood up, shaking off her wet paw, carefully prancing across the rock she was on so she didn't slip as well. In her case it wouldn't be land she trumbled into, but cold water deep enough to get her pretty well soaked through!
Once she got her footing on land she practically raced to Hazumi's side.
"Oh my gosh you're finally heeere! I missed you so much!" She pranced in place, wanting to dart forward and nuzzle the male but afraid that maybe he'd hurt himself when he'd fallen (it was certainly impressive to watch!), and she didn't want to make it any worse.
"You okay," she asked, amethyst eyes touched with worry.

He sat there for a moment not moving. He felt like a fool. He wasn't sure if he should look up or not. He knew Subira has seen the whole thing and that was enough to make him wish he had died. After a few moments and he hears subira ask if he was alright he had no choice but to look up because he didn't want her to worry. He looked up and gave her an embarrassed smile.
"Oh... Um... Hello... Yes. I... I think im alright." He stood and shook the sand from his fur.

Subira wiggled closer and began carefully patting Hazumi down with her paw, feeling for anything out of place. Several minutes passed, her face wrinkled in concentration. Finally she put her paw and smiled.
"Well nothing feels busted, so as long as you're sure nothing else got pinched or twisted or bruised, I think you're good to go," she piped cheerfully.

He watched as she began to pat him down. He couldn't help but blush as she did it. Why? Because she was female and just about the cutest thing in the world and he made a complete fool of himself in front of her. When she was finished he gave her a big smile to show he was alright.
"Thanks. Yeah I think im alright. No harm done here. Oh um..." He blushed again as he dipped his head in shame. "Sorry iim late... I didn't mean too... really..." It just kinda happened with him.

Subira giggled and gave Hazumi a playful pat on the cheek with her fluffy tail. “It’s fine, it’s fine,” she said, reassuring him. “I wasn’t waiting that long, and…oh!” She suddenly pranced in place, an excited wiggle combined with the smallest of jumps. “The lake is so pretty! I mean you wouldn’t think it would be fun to just sit there and watch the water and fish for a long time, but it was so peaceful and nice!”
She looked back over her shoulder at the large body of water, the mist fully evaporated by now but the sun causing the water to glow a lovely blue color. “It kinda makes you want to dive in and go swimming, but I was dipping my paw in and it’s so coooold,” she said, though her tone indicated that she wasn’t at all adverse to it.
Subira turned her giant amethyst eyes on Hazumi, looking a bit like a kit begging. “Did we have any plans specifically for today,” she asked, trying to remember if they were going to do anything after they met up or if they were just planning on winging the day together.

He couldn't help but giggle when she pat his cheek with her tail. "Thats good. I was worried I left you waiting a wile." He smiled at how excited she was. "It is really pretty isn't it. I'm glad you had a good time waiting." Of course when she mentioned swimming in cold water he made a comical face. "Um... I... I don't do so well in cold water... but I mean if you want too... then I wont mind." When she asked about plans he couldn't help but just look at her eyes. They were so pretty. "Huh? Oh... um... I... I don't think we planed anything. So we could do whatever you want." He smiled.

“Think we can go swimming,” she asked, eyes still huge. If it wasn’t for the fact that she was so innocent, it could almost be considered deliberate manipulation. As it was, all that was on Subira’s mind was how bracing that cold water would feel and how energizing it would be to swim around in it, and then, when they were tired and ready to stop swimming, the sun would be high up in the sky and nice and warm in their drying fur.
“If you don’t want to I’m sure we can find something else to do though,” she said, relenting on the eyes just a bit. Sometimes she had to remind herself to stop and think that not everyone was as….energetic as she was. More than a few foxes, some her own family, would definitely consider a swim in a cold lake as not a fun way to kick off the day!

Hazumi chuckled with a smile as his tail wagged excited. He was happy to see her happy. He now knew why he liked behing around her. No mater how hard of a day he had, when he saw her her smile always made him feel better. Not to mention he loved how energetic she was. It was cute. Trotting over he jumped up on the rock she had been on earlier and looked down into the water at his reflection.
"Swimming sounds really fun actually." he gave her a smile. "Its been a wile since I've been swimming." his tail wagged. "its a nice day to swim."

A huge grin broke out over her face. Subira let out a happy little giggle while doing a hopping skip in place. “Really? That is so awesome,” she enthused, bounding forward to join Hazumi on the rock. She thought about taking out the ribbon of her corset piercing since she had Hazumi here to help her rethread and tie it later, but in the end figured there was nothing for it to get caught on and the delicate-looking material was actually tough enough that a little dunking wouldn’t do it any harm. Besides, if she took it out she might lose it.
“It is a really nice day,” she said, beaming up at the clear blue sky and the sun shining down, still retaining a bit of the orange tint of dawn but slowly becoming more blinding and yellow as the day progressed.
Subira turned to look at Hazumi. “I haven’t been swimming in ages either, so don’t laugh at me if I flail around and look as silly as a kit!”

"Yeah. I don't see why not." He smiled at her. "Swimming sounds great." He looked back down at the water before him then back up at her when she told him not to laugh. He couldn't help but chuckle. "I would never laugh at you. So you have nothing to worry about." He smiled. "If you want, and have trouble with swimming I could always help you."

Subira examined the crystal blue waters that shimmered temptingly just below the rock they stood on. All her siblings had grown up with their mothers in a den just off the lands of the tribe that her father was a part of; at the time her mother was still debating whether or not she herself wanted to join. She hadn’t gotten to wander far into the tribe lands often, but whenever her father came by to visit they’d all gone exploring. His tribe had to most amazing, beautiful rivers, so Subira had learned how to swim early in life.
It was just ever since wandering off she hadn’t had much of an opportunity, and none of the rivers she’d come across had been as lovely.
“Well, there’s only one way to find out how much I remember,” she piped, the took three steps back and dashed forward, making a running leap. It was exhilarating to feel the wind whipping through her fur as she flew through the air, even if she didn’t fly far, and the clear blue water rushing up to meet her was really lovely. It was a shame she couldn’t keep flying, that would have been wonderful!
Subira landed in the water with a splash, gasping a little as the cold hit her. She struggled back up to the surface, sputtering and shivering a little. “Well I’m completely awake now,” she called back to Hazumi with a laugh, turning and paddling around to try and warm her muscles up.

Hazumi blinked when she told him there was only one way to find out. He wasn't sure what she meant by that but he had a feeling he was going to find out. Sure enough he watched as she stepped back then took off. He couldn't help but gape as he watched her jump into the water. He couldn't believe she just did that. He watched the splash that she had created and couldn't help but run to the edge and call out to her. When she finally came to the surface he sighed glad that she was ok. He watched her start swimming around to get warm.
"Well I would say that would defenatly wake someone up." He glanced down at the water and reached down to the water and began to test it with his paw, slapping it around a little because of how cold it was. Couldn't believe she actually jumped in. He looked back up at her. "Are you ok?"

Subira shivered a little and gave herself an all-shake that didn’t really work as well in the water as it did on land. She paddled a little harder and kept herself moving. Finally her muscles began to warm, and if the water didn’t exactly feel pleasant yet it didn’t feel like needles going through her skin either.
“I’m fine,” he called back to Hazumi, who was standing on the rock still and giving her a look filled with mingled concern and admiration. She gave him a huge grin to reassure it. “It’s freezing, but once you get over the initial shock of it it’s not so bad! Kind of the same as running around and playing in snow, but just a bit warmer.”
She chuckled, then folded her ears flat against her head and dove under the water. It was hard for a four-legged creature built for land like she was to actually swim around under water, and she couldn’t keep it up for long, but it was so crystal clear that it was beautiful to be completely submerged. It was like a whole world of its own down here!
