Things were hard when you were the weak on of the family. Derecho, though young, knew he was weak compared to his brothers, compared to everyone in the herd. It was not his choice to be this way, but the circumstances surrounding his birth certainly explained why the colt was easily winded and exhausted after even simply things. Though it was early in the day most of the herd was already up and active, including his brothers, but Derecho wanted nothing more than to sleep a few more hours. Glancing out from the spot he was curled up in Derecho caught sight of his three brothers playing and venturing out. He wanted to join them, to not miss out on all the fun they would have, but he knew he couldn't keep up. Letting out a yawn Derecho laid his head back down on the soft grass. Perhaps if he slept of a little bit longer he would be able to be rested enough to catch up with them and participate in whatever they were doing. Slowly his eyes closed, giving into the tug of sleep, a sigh escaping the colts mouth.
Derecho wasn't sure how much time had passed when he opened his eyes again. It was brighter and a quick glance up told him the sun sat high in the sky. He had slept away most of the morning. By now it would be hard to find his brothers, as they had likely gone quite far, after all they seemed to have plenty of energy and strength to make it through the day. Letting out a sigh Derecho realized he was thirsty. It wasn't too far to the nearest water source but even so he wasn't looking forward to the journey. Gathering up his strength the colt pulls himself to his hooves, allowing himself a moment to gain his balance before setting off at a slow pace towards water.
He wondered where his parents were. Likely doing something important considering they were the alphas of this herd. He was proud to be their son, yet he knew there was a bit of disappointment from them in regards to his weakened state. He had tried to ignore the looks his father had given him, but it did hurt. He wanted to be strong like his father, like his mother and brothers, like the whole herd was. But no matter what he did he was always left out of breath. Derecho was determined not to let that stop him, he would learn to overcome his weakness somehow. He had to do it for his family, to show them he did truly belong.

Arriving at the stream Derecho stopped and took a deep breath. He was tired already. A frown tugged at the corners of his mouth. He had walked slowly to avoid becoming tired and yet he still wanted to just lay down and rest. Giving his head a shake Derecho resolved not to do that. He had come here for a purpose and that was to get a drink to slack his thirst. Bending his head Drecho started to take in the cool refreshing water. The more he drank the less his throat hurt. That was the problem with sleeping so much, he didn't get to drink often enough to keep his throat moist. And now it felt wonderful.
After taking his fill of water Derecho turned and began to walk back towards him. The water had refreshed him, giving him that little bit of energy he needed to make it home. But now his stomach was protesting the lack of food. At least sleeping didn't take up too much energy but he really did need to eat. If he was to grow strong like his parents were then he would need to eat and drink regularly, perhaps even start to work on his muscles a bit, making them strong. He stopped about half way home, in a spot that had lots of green grass for him to much on. As he began to crop at the grass Derecho began to think.
What he really needed was a plan. Something he could do on his own, though likely with the help of some herd members, so that he could become strong. But he didn't want everyone to know about it. He wanted to keep this as secret as possible, so that one day he could suddenly be strong and show his family he wasn't the weak link anymore. His short tail swished behind him as he began to try and figure out just how he would accomplish this.

Figuring out how to become strong without having the entire herd in on his plans. Not that he had plans at this moment, just a thought that he needed to become stronger in order to truly earn his place in the herd. He couldn't count on his brothers, for surely they would tell their parents what he was doing, and the most important thing was keeping this a secret from his parents until he was ready to reveal his stronger self. He had a lot of family in this herd, could he trust them to help out and keep quiet about it until he was ready to share things? Possibly. But he would need to find just the right family member to do it, one who was willing to overlook his current weakness and help him on the path to becoming the Soquili he knew was buried deep inside. He hadn't come from a strong family line for nothing after all.
So beyond picking someone, or a couple of individuals to help, the other decision to make was just how this would all happen. He didn't want to do to his family asking for help but then not have a plan that would involve them. He would of course accept their input on things, suggestions on how differently or better he could go about doing his plans, but he needed something to work with initially. Taking in another mouthful of grass Derecho chewed thoughtfully. His brothers played and sparred together almost constantly, that could be something he would do to get stronger and it sure was fun. At least he remembered it being fun the few times he had tried it before exhaustion took it's hold on him. What else could he do? He was too young to fly and to be perfectly honest he was frightened to fly at the moment, worried that he would become too tired mid-flight and not be able to land in time before his wings stopped beating. Crashing to the ground was certainly not something he wished to do.

So what other activities could help? He would have to keep up with whatever he did and obviously would need to start off easy and work his way up. There was no way he could push himself right from the start or else he might hurt himself and then he would be worse off than he was now. That was something he had overheard from his parents, that because he was so weak he would also be prone to injury should he be pushed too hard. While he knew his parents wanted him to be strong and live up to the family legacy he was also smart enough to heed those words. If he was hurt and it was bad then he may never full recover, and if that happened then he would never become stronger either. So many factors that he had to deal with that it made Derecho's head hurt just thinking about them all. He needed to rest, needed to eat and drink, needed to get stronger but also needed to remain injury free. Letting out a snort Derecho moved over to a shady area and laid down.
With the sun coming down on the clearing it was actually quite warm and so the shade offered him a nice place to think and rest. Curling his legs under his body Derecho let out a sigh and glanced out at the area around him. It was a nice place to live, and it was a shame he couldn't truly enjoy it because he couldn't wander far enough to see much at this point. Nearly all the herd, except for him and his brothers, could soar over the land, seeing as little or as much of it as they pleased. It was a great thought to have that much power and freedom and it made Derecho smile a bit, one day, if he worked hard at things, he too would be able to fly around the herd, to serve his parents well and become something.
That made him think, what role would he play in the herd once he was older? Obviously this would be on the assumption he overcame his weakness. There were guards, healers, leaders, and general members plus plenty of other roles. He knew his parents already had an heir for when they no longer lead the herd so that was out of the question. Guard could be interesting, but that would highly depend on him becoming strong and brave. Healer could work even if he remained weak as he would not be needed to fight, but then again sometimes the injured that needed help were far away and would require traveling in order to aid them. Seemed no matter what he needed to get over this weakness, and all this thinking had brought him no closer to a solution than when he first awoke this morning.
