Remarque had run into his fair share of order and chaos members in the past few days, though all around his evenings had been spent meeting new faces. The majority of his new acquaintances had been pages or new Dark Mirror Senshi, so when he felt an energy signature of moderate strength, he felt inclined to make himself available.

Initially, he had figured he needed to make no effort to approach it, though when it became apparent that he and the signature were heading almost straight towards each other, he supposed such was unavoidable. At the very least, he figured it would give him something to do tonight. Even energy collecting had been slow; it seemed like his usual haunts had been abandoned for the evenings, and Remarque was not a particularly patient man. He couldn’t just stand around and wait for someone to wander into the area.

Which meant he had to go looking for prey.

An order signature was close enough; it might have been a knight, but at the very least he'd have something to do tonight. Exchanging words or punches, it didn't matter to him. Just as long as there was something to pull him out of this boredom.

Shalott wasn't entirely sure why she kept powering up when she didn't actually do anything anymore but defeat youma when she found them but every single night she powered up and patrolled. Most often with her husband recently but tonight she was alone. She felt a power signature of chaos and at first wanted to steer clear of it before she realized that she'd felt it before. Then she altered course to run right into it.

She didn't actually want to see Remarque considering what had happened the last time they'd met. It was a hell of a first impression, anyway. But part of this fear inside of her was crippling and she figured she needed to confront this head on and see how he was doing. Had she really broken his nose?

He owed her at least a punch for that if so. She'd take it if he needed retribution although that would be the end of it in her eyes.

When she came into the light and saw him the emerald haired knight hesitated. Her foot faltered in midair and she set it back down again, watching him before he had a chance to turn around and notice her arrival. She was thrown back to their first meeting some month or two before with a torrent of harsh words and a feeling that still gnawed at her insides with a mixture of guilt and intrigue. She'd wanted to kill him. She'd wanted to hurt him worse than what she'd done. She'd have tried if the blood hadn't snapped her out of it.

With forced steps she moved forward, one foot falling in front of the other loud enough to announce her approach if her signature hadn't already.

"Hello Remarque."

He should have known it would be Shalott. There weren't any squires that he really cared for, between—what, her, Celsus, Caelian? None of which he'd ever particularly cared for.

"Shalott," he replied, short and sharp. The woman didn't pose much of a threat to him, particularly given that he blamed their last encounter on sheer luck. She hadn't really made a good impression on him, but then again—what knight did?

He didn't make much of an effort to approach her, and instead let her come to him. That she was making her way towards him made him wonder if she had some purpose or reason for doing so, and he was immediately on guard. Not that he let it show; he had to keep his cool. Or at least look like he was.

"What brings you out so late?" he prompted, figuring he might as well find out what she wanted.

"I'm not here to fight, if that's what you're thinking. I could have given you a wide berth if I wanted to."

She and the Negaverse were not exactly on the best of terms recently and especially not this particular member of the Negaverse after she broke down like a lunatic when she actually managed to draw blood. She was a mother, not a hunter, and though the instinct to defend ran deep as it did for any maternal figure she simply didn't have it in her to hurt misguided people. It was like trying to beat an addict for his addiction. They just wouldn't get it and it would only tear her down in the end.

"I knew it was you, or I hoped I was right. I came to see if you were ok, if you can believe it."

Camelot's words were in the forefront of her mind. Making nice and playing civil was all well and good but she couldn't trust any of them. They were all infected, all poisoned by chaos and not one of them would ever change unless they purified and even then they'd still be soldiers just on a different side. Once in the battle there was no way to ever break free of it and Shalott prayed in the depths of her heart that her daughter would never know what that was like. But if her daughter ever was involved in all of this she'd know, wouldn't she?

A guilty pang stabbed her. Just like Harmony knows all about my activites?

"Have you been alright? The nose seems to have healed."

For a moment in the end she could have sworn that they'd had a small connection when she was helping him stop the bleeding. Maybe it was the simple fact that she was having a breakdown at the time, she wasn't sure. Either way she sat down on a convenient surface and invited him to do the same if he'd relax.

"I'm only here to talk, Remarque."

Remarque eyed the area she had invited him to and rather politely declined; he held up a hand and offered a simple, "No, thanks. The nose is fine. Nothing broken, just a lot of blood." Not that he liked it being brought up or anything; it wasn't his proudest moment, nor was he particularly pleased to come across the Squire again.

A part of him very much wanted to hurt her, though the other part of him couldn't help but be curious. Words could have quite an impact, and if she was so eager to talk that she would risk his wrath, so be it. She'd better have something good to say.

"I'm interested to know why you would come to see if I was all right, knowing I was the enemy." He had recalled her concern when she'd drawn blood, though reflecting on the situation made him all the more curious about the woman. "Is that the only thing you wanted to discuss or was there something else on your mind?"

He cared little for apologies; he hardly ever meant his own, and he certainly never trusted anyone's. An apology was the politically correct way to say 'I screwed up and got caught; or 'I made a bad decision and now that it's played out, I wish I could take it back'.

There were very few incidents which warranted guilt or grief of some sort from Remarque, and busting up someone's nose wasn't exactly in his category of 'unforgivable wrongs'.

…Well, then again. She had knocked his nose, and messing up his face was a big no-no.

But anyone else, mostly, would have been totally fine.

Shalott knew there would not be a pleasant reception for her here but that didn't stop her from trying for peace anyway. If she ran out every time things got hard she'd never be where she was currently and despite her issues she was in a good place. Her husband loved her, her daughter was about to graduate high school, and her stepson didn't seem to abhor her very existence anymore which was progress.

All in all she was very ******** being enemies!" She would not normally have cursed in front of anyone but her husband but this seemed dire. "I'm not going to be enemies with a boy, ah, young man just because some war says we're on opposite sides! This is ridiculous!"

She wasn't being condescending. In fact, she was being about as sincere as she could be. Part of her felt guilty for what she'd done, certainly, but the bigger part of her was wrestling with the bigger picture and it wasn't the one she originally saw. She needed to figure out where to stand and maybe it wasn't on one side like she originally thought.

"Yeah. I just wanted to know how you are. I'm not here to apologize or say I was wrong. I wasn't. We both were trying to hurt each other. I just happened to succeed in a clearer way."

Ignoring, of course, the breakdown afterward and the new twisted feeling she'd had inside of herself at the time. If he could have done the same to her he would have and she wasn't kidding herself about that. She felt guilt in that she'd wanted to kill him and let herself go too far, not for fighting him in the first place.

The language the Squire provided surprised Remarque a bit, not because he was unused to hearing such vulgarity from his opponents, but because he hadn't expected it from her. He'd have taken her for being too refined, too mature.

"I don't suppose I'd call what you had a success, per se, but whatever helps you sleep at night," he replied, still a bit suspicious with her. He didn't appreciate being called a boy or a young man, even if she'd meant it not to be an insult. He wasn't calling her an 'old lady' for the same reasons he didn't want to be called 'young man'. Age was nothing in this war. He had met foolish people older than him, and wise people younger.

"I'm doing fine, however, thank you. I hope you are the same?" he said, just out of politeness. Truth being, he hadn't quite forgiven her for that kick, yet. "If you don't want to be enemies, then what do you want to be?" Certainly not allies; he wasn't even sure what her goal was. She didn't seem to have any intention to allow leeway in the Dark Mirror Court's practices—even if they had a legitimate reason for wanting—needing—to gather energy.

The squire almost laughed. Almost. But managed instead to simply lift an eyebrow and give a secret grin. Whatever helped him sleep at night. In the end he was the one bloody but she was the one bearing the guilt for it so it wasn't much of a success. He was right about that in a sense.

"I'm well. Happy for the most part." At least in other portions of her life, this being the exception.

As for his next question, simple as it seemed, she wasn't sure. They couldn't be friends because she wasn't about to bark up that particular tree but she wasn't about to take him on as an enemy either. It was safe to say Shalott was striding on thin ice and sometime, somewhere, she was going to fall through.

"I don't know, Remarque."

Truly, she didn't.

Shalott was so different from the last time Remarque had run into her, and he could only wonder what else had transpired to make her change her views so drastically. He had half expected her to attack again, now that she'd gotten over the emotional baggage of their last encounter. He'd never understand exactly what she had gone through; he didn't have the same ability to feel guilt like she did.

This was war, and sacrifices had to be made. He'd turn to words before violence, but only because that was what was expected of him. He would save who he could, and felt to sympathy for the rest.

"That might be something to figure out soon," he noted, still watching the Squire. "That's not exactly a safe topic to be on the fence about."

Shalott only looked at him sadly, nodding her head in agreement.

"You're not wrong about that."

But on the fence she was, wondering how to keep being the knight she was while incorporating this idea that she did not want to fight the Negaverse. Rather, she didn't want to fight the members of Chaos. Youma would always be alright to fight in her book. They were mindless creatures and not someone with a family, someone she might know.

"Don't get me wrong, Remarque. I still think I'm on the right side I just don't think that fighting is the right answer. What has it ever accomplished but more pain?"

She'd read somewhere that to be happy you need only decide who you are and be that. Since she'd been suffering quite a bit, agonizing over this conundrum, she was beginning to understand that a decision had to be made. But that was her decision to make and her happiness to refind. Maybe a break was what she needed, laying down her sword in earnest like she told Tony she wanted to do instead of going through the motions as Kailash suggested she did.

"If you're alright I will say goodnight."

They weren't friends. It was just a good night not to be beating each other senseless.

That Shalott had come to this decision was not disappointing to Remarque; he hadn't expected her to change her mind about the situation, so even just this little conversation was a push in the right direction. "All right, then," he said simply, observing the Squire.

"Maybe the next time I see you, you'll have come up with a way to fight this war without violence. Tell me, if you ever come up with such a conclusion, won't you?"

The question was rhetorical and Shalott already seemed ready to part. He wouldn’t make her ponder the situation much, and just as he supposed she had things to do, so did he. He still had an energy quota to fulfill, and hanging around her, he knew he wasn't going to find any suitable candidates. "Until then, you take care of yourself and have a good evening," he said, figuring that was enough to politely conclude their conversation.

He offered a nod of the head and turned his back to her; it might have been a foolish mistake to display your back to an enemy, but he was cocky enough to think she wouldn’t dare attack him again.
