The pride had changed so much... there was a time when the Shadow Clan had been composed primarily of his large family. His old, wise mother, his poetic father, his brothers and sisters. Soon an old friend of his mother's family had entered into the land and began a family of his own. A large brute with a golden pelt and a firey red mane. There had been a point when Kohana had been considered a brute among the Ela, and Kohana had been quietly proud of this reputation. Few of the ela knew of the outside world and of the larger, stronger lions. Malik's appearance had been a shock to most, but Kohana had taken the large, solid male as a threat on his own position within the clan. Malik had already started a family of his own and those cubs had grown up strong and proud as their father. Kohana, sadly, was no longer the rock of the Shadow Clan.
Few knew that he had taken pride in his size and strength. His mother, however, rightly suspected the wound to his pride. Kohana would leave in silence to patrol the border as the sun rose and would often only return at night fall. He would stare out into the horizon and sometimes his dark eyes would drift towards the border between clans. Some of his brothers had found themselves ladies...and had left. It was tradition that a male would leave his clan for the clan of his female. For Kohana, leaving was not an option. For Kohana, a mate was not an option.
It was another typical day and Kohana was up with the sun. He'd stretched his limbs, cooled his throat with a few slurps of water, and made for the border. Behind him, predictable as the setting son, was his small blind brother, Howi. Rehema encouraged the little blind male to follow his older brother on his patrols. It helped him learn the terrain and she suspected it would help soften Kohana's ridged edges a bit to have the up-beat youth around him.
He sighed and took a short look over his shoulder. "Come on, then."
The smaller male walked carefully, his paws brushing over the stones, rocks, and foliage that all worked together to paint the landscape of the high altitude territories. The air was thinner, the lions smaller, and the terrain more harsh than even the lower grasslands. For a lion lacking his sight, it was a challenge. His paws had calloused over from multiple stumbles and stubbings as a cub and his pale pelt was essentially a living canvas for his littermate's practice in the art of tatooing.
He sneered as Kohana verbally prodded him forward. "Relax." He grumbled. "It's not like we're under attack."

Oh, she was lost already, wasn't she.
Nawiri had accepted that she would have to stay at the borders during the beginning of the festivals, a way to keep the purity of the lands intact, while still allowing the hopefuls to understand their possible future homes. But . . . who knew it was so large?
Fretting slightly at the shadow clan border, her eyebrows raised when she heard voices - she hadn't expected anyone to actually be around. But, this was a good thing! They could help her! Oh, this was a good turn of events.
Clearing her throat, she made the act of walking up to them, eyebrows eye. "H-Hello there. Could you tell me where I am?" She asked, lightly.

Ironically, it was the blind youngster, Howi, that noted the new presence nearby. Where life had robbed him of his sight, it gifted him with a strength in his other senses. He could hear better than most, smell better than most, and he could remember the lay of the land by touch and the flow of the land better than most. A series of stones tumbling down an incline and a strange scent demanded his attention. He hesitated and turned his head to the side, one ear rolling back. "...Ko...."
Kohana tensed and threw a dark look over his shoulder. A moment later a strange voice called out. A female. A stranger to the territory. A threat.
The male turned himself about slowly as he filled his chest with a deep breath and hardened his features. Broad shoulders tensed as a strong back straightened out. He stared down the female, his tail snapping back and forth. It was a clear indication for her to stay where she was.
"You are dangerously close to the territory of the Ela'wadiyi. These lands belong to the Shadow Clan. State your purpose."

Her purpose?
Tawny eyebrows raised as she tried to figure out how to answer it - she was simply lost, but now she knew where she was! Shadow clan, that made a lot of sense. Giving a soft, serene smile to both of the boys, she allowed herself the moment to look over the tattoos that riddled them. How beautiful.
"I . . was told that we were given free time to look around while the festivals alight, and got lost." She admitted, truthful tone in her voice. "I mean no disrespect."

"She's just lost." Howi echoed, his empty eyes turning towards where he'd last heard Kohana's voice. The other lion had a tendency to be a little...uptight. He often closed up when he was met with change and the harbringers of change. Rogues were met with special suspicion. He had allowed one female in but... they hadn't seen her in a while.
Kohana grunted but reluctantly relaxed himself... slightly. He hardly looked approachable but he wasn't as tense as he'd been a moment ago and his tail slowed somewhat. The male took a deep breath and lowered his head.
"I suspect you are in need of direction, water, or nourishment. I can direct you to them. Until the festival is over, however, you are not permitted within the territory."
Howi perked up and turned towards the female... mostly. He was kind of looking out towards the left of her. "See? He's not so bad. Food, drink, rest? We can help you there. There's a good place not too far from the border. Sorry about the restriction. It would upset the spirits to allow those foreign to our ways into the lands while we're paying our respects."
