The funny thing about having a past, is that you can never run from it.
A moonless night. All alone in dark forest. The mist curled at her toes. If this were a horror story, she would be so screwed. But the real horror is life. Having to live with your demons. Your past. And no matter how hard you try to forget, it always creeps back up on you. Her footsteps were slow, deliberate. Maybe if she focused on them the wave that threatened to drown her would subside. How far had she walked? A better question to ask was how long she had been walking. She couldn't sleep, more like she didn't want to sleep. Nightmares plagued her when she rested. More and more frequently she had taken these midnight walks. Sneaking away from her tribe-lands and returning at dawn. Each time she walked a little further. That made it more difficult to get back before anyone noticed.
Was this the price she had to pay for her new life? Perhaps it wasn't worth it. No, of course it was. She had gone from...from a thug to a healer. s**t, she was a shaman now. She had a tribe, filled with friendly, decent foxes.
And what she had before was...
It all became to much to bear. This overwhelming sense of guilt. For the fox she used to be, for what she did to make it right. For everything. The tide of her emotions surged, and she couldn't fight it anymore. She collapsed as her memories washed over her. Words echoing in her mind.
'We are two halves cleft from the same soul.'
She felt like screaming, shattering the silence of the night. But her voice was a hollow whisper.
"I betrayed you..."

(( Be warned, there are many time skips within this flashback. Don't worry, I'll let you know when we're back in the present))-Flashback-
"And don't ******** come back!"
"Why the hell would I? This place is a bloody dump!"
There was a crash within the cave and seconds later a monochrome and neon 'daeva came storming out. She was young, but old enough to be an adult and burning anything her paws touched as she stomped away. Her stupid, nasty b***h of a father. Why he had kept her around all this time was a mystery. Probably some botched sense of honour. Personally, it would have been better if he told her mum to take her when she was a BCR.
Yes, this girl was the result of a crackbreeding. Between a drunk-out-of-his-mind normal male and a equally drunk daeva female one night. And she was the result. And it just so happened that when he was sober, he really didn't like 'daevas. So when she hatched and turned out to be one, he wasn't too pleased. That's why he named her Nimue, after a witch. Wow, great sense of humour. Well, She wasn't going to take it anymore, she was her own fox now. Nim didn't need a father anymore, she was an adult and she was sick and tired of being hated. Pah, she would show him. She would have a great life without him.

-Time skip- Ok...so she had no idea where she was. But why should that matter? Small town? Just passing through. Getting all sorts of nasty looks from the humans? Giving a total of 0 ********. Small brick houses lined the few roads that existed. Only a handful of these roads were actually made properly, and there were next-to-no human contraptions travelling along them.
"At least I'm not the only Modifox here..." She muttered under her breath as two normals peeked around a corner at her. Somehow, she got the feeling this town didn't like newcomers. Up ahead was a clearing where stalls were gathered and humans were obviously trying to sell their junk off. Nearby was another gathering similar, but with foxes for stallholders. How odd. The smell of food drew Nimue closer as her mouth watered. Gods, it had been so long since she'd had a proper meal. She cautiously approached one of the fox-stalls selling some sort of smoked meat. The grumpy owner eyed her. "Umm...how do I-"
"Equal or greater value." Snapped the old fox.
"Uh, I'm sorry I don't understand..."
"Gimme an item of equal or greater value, 'an you can 'ave some meat." The female rolled her eyes. How rude.
"B-But I don't have anything-"
"Then get lost!"
Head drooped, Nimue turned away. s**t how was she going to get some food? The landscape here didn't look like it had an abundant supply, not like her homeland. She sighed, it would probably be for the best if she moved on. But with an empty belly, how far would she be able to go? Ugh.
By the time she was at the outskirts of the old town, she was so deep in her wallowing she didn't notice a large root at the base of an old tree. Naturally, she stumbled over it and landed face-first. "OOF! Argh, you stupid tree!" Anger made her blood hot, and she had no trouble expressing it on the old, dead waste of bark that was this bloody tree. Nim was ready to knock the thing down, because she had had a truly rotten day and she was hungry and...and...just because she could!
She heard a rustle from above, accompanied by a feral snarl. Too late she moved to dodge away. A large weigh hit her full-force, knocking her down in the process. As her head hit the ground, the world went black...

Nimue could have been unconsious for hours for all she knew, but judging from the fact that the weight was still on top of her, it must have only been a few seconds. Although it could always be a boulder, but boulders weren't warm...and furry...and- "Uh-Wah!!!" She cried, blinking her eyes repeatedly and scrunching her brows together. Slowly, the world came into focus. Black snout, red eyes, white face staring angrily at her. Oh geez.
"Quiet! Quit squealing!" Came an agitated voice belonging to the fox, which then proceeded to mutter something under it's breath.
"Can...can you get off me?!" Nimue said, squirming beneath the stranger's grasp. Her question was answered with a grunt, but at least the stranger moved off of her. Once she was able to get up, Nim could see who had tackled her. A male, scrappy-looking 'phim with red, black and white fur. At least, that's all she could make of his retreating figure. "Hey! Wait up! Why'd you pounce me?" She called, trotting up to him. He whipped around, growling at her. Okay, not such a good idea after all. Nim flipped her ears back. Were...were those...fangs!? Holy s**t!
"Maybe because you tried to knock me out of a tree?!"
"Oh...sorry...I didn't see you..." She mumbled. Was he a vampire?! Was he going to suck her blood?! Why was he out in the sunlight, wouldn't he burn up?!
More muttering from the 'phim as he once again stalked off. Nim stared after him for a moment. Well, that was weird.

The moon had risen and the darkness had come out to play....and Nim had no idea why she was still hanging around this lame excuse for a town. Desperate times called for desperate measures, and the 'daeva had resorted to eating whatever she could find. Rodents and possums mainly, though sometimes she would get lucky and find a half-decent meal in a trash container. Humans were weird like that.
But it wasn't enough for a long-term diet, and hungry as she was, she doubted she could skip town. From the snippets of conversation Nim had managed to pick up, the closest town was miles away. A long trip on an empty stomach was never a good idea.
A mouth-watering smell pulled the vixen from her thoughts. Oh dear sweet lords and ladies, what was that?! Her stomach greeted the scent loudly. Cautiously moving though the alleys and laneways, she followed the delicious odour. Hrm...There!
At the end of the steets stood a quaint house made with bricks. Large, cream windows looked out onto a drought-ridden front garden that marked the entrance. On the ledge of one of these windows, a human had set a lovely...what were they called again? Yes, a pie to cool. Shadows flickered and danced inside, this pie was not unguarded. Nimue's belly rumbled again, it smelt as though it had some sort of meat in it, not those gross berrys. Hrmph, omnivores.
"Take it", came a raspy whisper.
Nim nearly jumped out of her skin, head spinning to the source. Oh...it was him. "Excuse me?"
"You want it, so go get it."
Did he mean...steal? She'd never stolen anything in her life...okay that was a lie. As a kit, she loved to steal. Not because she was greedy...just the thrill of taking something without the other noticing. But, she' grown out of it. Stealing was wrong...right? Oh...but she was so hungry...surely that pie didn't mean anything to the humans who made it. Right?
Before she noticed what she was doing, Nim has silently crept up to the little brick house. Her blood seemed to be replaced with electricity, yet her heart maintained a steady beat. She watched the shadowy outlines keenly. All she needed was the right moment. Limbs gracefully slunk towards the window's edge, body low to the ground so she was underneath the shelf. Thank god it was high enough for her to fit. Ears alert...listening to the sound of footsteps. Five minutes may have passed...or an hour for all she knew. Muscles tense. Tail gently moving upwards, sweeping her target from it's place. As it fell, she caught it neatly, not making a sound. Now...the escape was always the hardest part. Slowly...gently, creep away. Out of sight, out of reach.
Nimue couldn't help but chuckle and smile with glee. Yes! She'd done it! And no one had suspected a thing! The adrenaline made her giddy. It took all of two seconds for her to chow down. Oh, gods it was so good! All the sweeter for what she had just done. The flapping of wings pulled her back to reality. Oh, Count Dracula was back. Ah s**t, was he going to raise the alarm? Was he planning on having some too? s**t! Why didn't she think of that?!
...Wait, he didn't look pissed...was he...smiling? Okaaaaaay...maybe it was time to get out of here...
"Hold on there, girl. You did good."
"Uhmm...thanks?"
The male seemed to be mulling something over, it was like she could see the thoughts churning in his head. Oh crap.
"Well...I'd better get going now...sooo bye..."
"You can go then, unless you fancy some proper food...plenty more where that came from."
"What?"
"I won't lie, you've got some skill...my outfit could use someone like you right now."
"Your...outfit..." Ok, what the ******** was going on? Was this some sort of gang he was talking about. That didn't sound too good. Nim didn't like where this conversation was headed. And the 'phim seemed to sense this.
"A family of sorts. we've all had to deal with the more... unsavoury aspects of life, while all those others get whatever they want. You know what it's like too...Oh, don't look at me like that, I can tell. The way you walk...your expression...the way you hold yourself. I'm simply offering you a chance to get back at the world."
She drew in a sharp breath. Maybe...maybe this was a good thing. For all the times she'd been an outcast, hated, spat on, for no fault of her own. Maybe this was what she needed. And if it wasn't...she could always turn around and leave...right?
"...Okay..."

-Time skip-
Nimue approached the large, run-down warehouse at a steady lope, paws making small clouds of dust. What the hell did the humans use this for anyway? Didn't matter now anyway, those people were long gone and now...now it served such a better purpose. A gold pendant swung back and forth from her jaws, it was quite annoying really. Once right outside the building, Nim tensed. She pounced, wings giving a hard stoke downward to provide extra lift. Paws gripped the ledge of a large window, glass removed so as to allow foxes to get in. There were a number of wooden planks to enable the non-winged foxes to enter, but jumping was always quicker. Heaving herself up and though, she dropped down to the other side neatly. Eyes, flicked over her once, then quickly back to what each of their owners were doing. Nimue padded forward across the large room, headed towards one particular doorway. From one side of the room came raised voices, arguing about some bet. From the other side, foxes of all breeds mulled over stolen food and drink, talking animatedly, mostly boasting about a latest job.
When she had reached the door, she was met by the glare of a purple vixen perched atop of a pile of crates. Nimue ignored her icy glare, instead choosing to shoot her a pleasant smile. Dropped the necklace to talk. ”Evening, Selene . Is Roth in yet?” Her head turned scan the main room once more.
”I dunno…I might’ve seen him…”
Nimue huffed impatiently. She and Selene didn’t get along at the best of times. Not that Selene got along with anyone really. The bat-s**t crazy vixen was into the more…unsavoury tasks. The jobs that involved framing others, blackmail , collecting debts , that sort of s**t. ”Just tell me, you’re already on thin ice…”
She didn’t think it was possible, but somehow the vixen looked more evil. Nim knew that she’d hit her mark. Last week while taking on a framing job, Selene had discovered a little too late that the target was a vixen she was dating. Long story short, she stuffed the whole thing up. Romance didn't fare well in their line of work.
”He’s here. In the resting quarters. Now ******** off.”
There were three rooms in the warehouse; The Main Chamber, the Vault, and the Resting Quarters. The main chamber held…pretty much everything. It was where meals were eaten, conversation was made and jobs were taken. The vault held everything that was received as payment, with the exception being if it was edible. That room was lock up real tight, by some human mechanism that had been there before. It required a key to open, and only on fox had that key. The resting quarters were pretty self-explanatory, filled with mats and pillows. That was the room she now approached.
”…b*****d put up a fight…”
And there he was…technically her boss, but it wasn't like he acted like one really. Astaroth always said this was a family of sorts, and it really did feel like one. He had given her a new life. ’Keep it up and you’ll be kissing the ground he walks on…’ He was also with a grey normal, another male. At this point he must have noticed her, because he turned to face her.
”Nimue! How’d it go huh?”
She couldn't help but smile, dropping the necklace to the floor and sweeping it over. Most of the foxes and human were wary of the ‘phim, with his large canines and rough appearance. But they didn't know him.
”Nice!
”What else did you expect?”
He chuckled ”You’re on sentry tonight.”
The Tenebrosi Syndicate had been established little more than a year ago, with Nimue joining about three months in. In that short time it had rapidly grown to dominate not only this backwater town, but also having an influence in many others nearby. There were even negotiations towards building allies in one of the larger cities. The foxes that were a part of Tenebrosi acted mostly as mercenaries and thieves. If a fox wanted something done, they would ask for the help of the syndicate, though there was always a price. This price could come in the form of anything valuable, depending on the job, however these were established beforehand to make sure one didn't go through a really tough job and end up with a carrot or some s**t. Those that couldn't pay up…faced some rather unpleasant consequences. Recently Tenebrosi had encountered some trouble with another, similar clan. This wasn't good. Jobs were limited and competition was fierce. It wouldn't be too much for the two to raid each other’s stash, so security had become tough. There was always someone on watch, making sure no one got in when they weren’t supposed to, and just in case, the syndicate had established an escape route besides the main entrance. Tensions were high, and Astaroth didn’t take well to being challenged.
