Though her surprise hadn't been completely evident, Xiu had been startled to see Yin at Fright Night. The last time she had seen him before the festival was...well, before that particular incident had taken place. Thus, it had come as quite a surprise to see her friend suddenly so grown up, but at the same time, it had come as a relief too. He had seemed happy and healthy, and really, that was all that mattered to Xiu when it came to her friends.
Of course, they hadn't had much time to chat during the actual festival what was Yin having his own booth to run. Hoping that the boil would have some time to catch up now that the event was over, Xiu packed a homemade lunch--high-quality meat for Yin, and a more balanced (and cooked) meal for herself--and trotted off to the monster dorms to meet her friend.
When she arrived, she knocked on the door. "Yin Cang? It's Xiu! Are you busy today?"

If anyone had asked what Yin was doing, he would not have admitted it. Alone in his room, no one around, and in front of a mirror, watching himself as he experimented.
He had a good reason. He had just showered after his (all) morning workout, thankfully not having classes until later, and his hair was still damp. But that was nothing important. No, trying to figure out how to get this scarf on perfectly was important. did he wear it with both sides hanging down in front? Behind him? One end on each side? Did he fold it in half and pull the ends through the loop? Did he just wrap it around his waist?
He was startled out of his fussing, some might even call it preening, by a knock on his door, a rare experience. It put him on edge, paranoia tinging his thoughts, until he heard her voice, unmistakable even if the ghoul had not called out her name. He moved to the door quickly, opening it with a welcoming smile. "Greetings Miss Xiu-Ying. I am not currently busy, did you require anything of me?" His attention was being drawn down to the basket though...something smelled delicious.
His minipets agreed, as they began trying to stampede the door. Too many vasiel kittens and...he managed to reach down and snag Arthur before he got close. The others might pester her but the rabo...the rabo had sinister ways and way too much energy for his own good.

Xiu brightened when the door opened, beaming up at the boil with a pleasant smile. "Hi, Yin Cang! I'm very sorry to bother you today, but I was wondering if you had had lunch yet?" She lifted the basket for him to see, just as she noticed the rather large group of minis that had gathered behind the boil. ...Wow, well perhaps it was a good thing that she always overpacked her lunches with extra food.
"I just haven't gotten the chance to talk to you properly for so long, so I thought that we could--...? Who's this cute fellow?" Unsurprisingly, the baku was quickly distracted by the little rabo. He was a new addition, wasn't he? Could he be a new friend for Princess Eva? And speaking of the princess...
Cocking her head to the side, Xiu let her gaze sweep over the crowd of minis around her friend's feet. There were plenty of vaisel kittens but...hmmm, where was that familiar bow?

She had cooked? Yin's mouth was watering in anticipation, all the answer that he really needed. "Indeed I have not. Would you mind? I uh...I do not have many places to sit however." There was his bed of course (which naturally was made pristinely) and the floor, but...he knew she had a table and might expect him to have a table and chairs.
In fact...that was really all that was in his bed. The bed at the far end, training mats covering the floor, mirrors and shards of mirrors covering the walls. Still, he stood aside to let her come in, rather self-conscious of the meager offering he would have for her. "Um, or we could go outside..."
Really, there were far too many vaisel kittens. Ever since Fei had vanished (he had looked for him of course but had an idea of where he might have gone) there were far less following him out of the closet, for which Yin was grateful. As for the "cute fellow" "Art-hur," Yin all but growled. "I can just tie him up or put him in the closet for now though." As if to prove his superior escape artist skills the white rabo managed to wiggle free of his grip, landing on his feet and immediately trying to investigate the basket.

Laughing, Xiu lifted a hand and waved it in a dismissive manner. "Oh--shall we eat lunch together then? And don't worry about it! If you're okay with it, we can just sit and eat on the floor or something!" It certainly wouldn't bother Xiu in the least. It could be like an indoor picnic! At most, the only thing she was worried about was getting food over the boil's floors...though with all the vaisel kittens here, she wasn't so sure that crumbs would be a problem.
The baku took in Yin's room with a thoughtful hum, the corners of her lips quirked upwards in a smile. "You must train a lot, Yin Cang," She commented, taking in the maps and the mirrors with interest, "That's quite impressive! I don't have nearly enough room in my own dorm room to train."
Xiu turned to look at the rabo then, tilting her head to the side. Art-hur? "Art...hur? And aww, there's no need to do that! Surely he can't be that bad, rig--oh." The ghoul's eyes widened slightly when the mini tried to examine the basket that she held, but her surprise was quickly replaced with amusement as she set the basket down on the ground and knelt down. She carefully dug through the basket's contents before pulling out a neat little package tied with a ribbon.
"Want a treat, Arthur?" She undid the ribbon and shook one of the treats into her hand, offering it to the rabo. This was followed shortly after by her shaking a few treats into her hand at once, which were then offered to the vaisel kittens. Though...hmm, that really was quite strange...
"Is Princess Eva not here right now?" Xiu turned to look at Yin with curious eyes, "Actually, I made another batch of the treats for her specifically, but..." But she appeared to be nowhere in sight.

Oh...had she not meant for them to eat together? "Of course you do not have to eat with me," he said, sounding slightly distressed. But sitting on the floor was just fine by him. The vaisel kittens seemed to know better than to get in the way while he was eating.
"Oh um...yes I do. Normally just light exercises in here, training and such. And your room could have space if you desire it! I could assist you, you would just need to get rid of your table...and your couch...and probably several other things..." Yeah, probably would not be happening.
Well, Arthur was already revealing his true colors, but Miss Xiu-Ying seemed to be perfectly fine with his poor manners. She was always rather patient, and it certainly showed now. He watched as she just took it in stride, giving him some treats and just...generally befriending all of his minis. But then...she said it. She said those other trigger words, that one that had his face looking broken in a matter of minutes. "I should have told you and Miss Shu earlier," he said, trying to hold in his feels tears. It just...seemed like it did not really get better. He was trying to be strong, really trying, hands tugging at his scarf as he tried to, for once, talk about his darling without completely breaking down. "Princess Eva...is no longer with us..."
Was that a single tear beginning to trickle down his cheek?

Xiu seemed surprised--and puzzled--by Yin's response, and she was quick to shake her head. "Wha--oh, no, Yin Cang! That's not what I meant! I was just wondering if you would mind if we both ate lunch on your floor? I don't want to get anything dirty, after all!" Laughing, she pointed towards the basket that she had set down, "I packed meat--just how you like it--along with some thoroughly cooked things for myself."
The offer to help her turn her room into a more appropriate training place earned a giggle, followed by a wry smile and a shake of her head. "I guess it doesn't sound so practical for my room...but that's okay! That's what the gym is for."
Xiu then spent some time contentedly feeding the minis, patting the heads of whichever vaisel kittens were closest, and giving Arthur an affection scratch behind the ears. Surrounded by all this positivity and cuteness, the serious tone--though there seemed to be another emotion behind it--in Yin's voice suddenly made her frown with concern. Pushing herself back up to her feet, she looked at him inquiringly...
And then she froze.
...No longer...? How...when? Could it have been when Yin was kidnapped? The ghoul opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Though she wanted to voice her questions--when had it happened? How had it happened?--those questions didn't really seem important right now, especially considering the look on her poor friend's face. She knew how much Princess Eva had meant to him, and just how much he had loved her.
"Yin Cang, I...I-I'm so sorry, I should have..." Unsure whether he was any more receptive to hugs than he had been before, Xiu carefully reached out and gently took one of his hands, giving it a light, comforting squeeze. Almost immediately after, she dug into her obi and withdrew a handkerchief, holding it out for the boil to take.

Nothing in his room was nice enough to worry about getting dirty. Really.
Yin looked up at her, eyes watering slightly. So manly. "It...it is okay..." His voice was cracking under the strain. The feel of her reaching out and grabbing her own hand to squeeze it and grabbing his hand was startling, but helped to draw him back to the present.
But she let go quickly enough, nothing to bother him too much. The handkerchief...it was a nice gesture, but..."I could not dirty your things Miss Xiu-Ying." He indulged in a sniffle. "I...she...a hunter killed her." It was a bitter acknowledgement, but maybe if he talked a bit about it, spoke to others, eventually the harsh edge of his grief would be taken away. "I am so, so sorry that i did not inform you earlier Miss Xiu-Ying. I should have done so before now..."
Arthur just decided to bat at the ghoul's skirt.

"Would you not take it even if it made me feel better?" Xiu continued to hold the handkerchief out to him, her own expression sad as she looked at the poor boil. The smile she had so cheerily greeting him with had disappeared, her pink eyes solemn. In the past, Xiu would have denied "hating" anything--after all, hatred was such a strong, negative emotion--but the actions of the hunters had made her reconsider. While there seemed to be some honorable ones among the much, there was so much that they did that was unforgivable.
"No. No, please don't apologize to me, Yin Cang." She was quick to shake her head, and she would have said more had it not been for a certain mini that decided to capture her attention. Turning to look at the rabo, the ghoul felt the corners of her lips turn up slightly as she crouched back down to look at him.
He was cute, that was for certain, though it was clear that Yin was not quite as devoted to him as he had been to Princess Eva. She stretched her hands out towards the mini, as if asking for permission to pick him up. As she glanced over to Yin, however, the ghoul frowned slightly. She didn't want to open up the wounds any more than she already had. Clearing her throat, and looking a little meek, the baku nodded towards the basket.
"I, um...would you still be willing to have lunch with me? I was...I was also curious how your booth went, and everything."

If...if it made her feel better? Trembling he took the handkerchief from her, though he barely dabbed at his eyes with it, trying not to get it too dirty. He was entirely self-conscious, again, but it was just...so difficult to keep his emotions about the rabo under lock and key.
No, Arthur had not become the King as Eva had become the Princess. He was more of a pestilence than a creature actually wanted. But he was supposed to help, and he was a gift, and Yin could not or would not deny him. He was what he was.
Yin was incredibly grateful for the distraction. It gave him something to focus on and he jumped at the prospect. "Ah! Yes, indeed. If you do not mind." He waited to see if she would get the food out, not wanting to intrude though not expecting her to serve him either. Fright Night, there was a topic he could latch on to."My booth? It went...fine? It was not as busy as some but those that came by mostly seemed to enjoy it. Did you have a pleasant event?"

Relaxing slightly as the topic took a different turn, Xiu pulled a small picnic blanket out of the basket (she came prepared!) and carefully spread it out over the ground. Setting the basket into the center of the blanket, she pulled out plates of a variety of foodstuffs, spreading it out around the blanket. It was pretty obvious what food was for Yin and which were for Xiu--the carefully sliced and cubed pieces of prepared raw meat were for the boil, while Xiu had a slightly more balanced meal with a number of fruits and veggies.
...And of course, the baku had brought a thermos of tea. She listened to her friend speak as she filled two cups with the tea, passing him one along with a plate and a fork. "Here you are. And it's great to hear that your booth went well!" She smiled, leaning back once he had taken the offered utensils. "As for me...yes, it was quite a fun three days! All the games were fun, and everyone who ran the booths were very poli--"
...
The baku suddenly grimaced. "Well, there was one unpleasant incident, but.."

Yin stared at the blanket, watching as she sat on it before doing the same. He had lost a bit of his appetite, but it was Miss Xiu-Ying's cooking. Even a person dying from gluttony would try to force some of it down.
He took the items, trying not to grimace at the fork. He sipped at the tea gently, enjoying the flavor of it, nothing too strongly floral for him and smiled approvingly. Just...trying to be happy. When her attention was elsewhere he shifted his hand down to a more humanoid one, picking up the fork still with some distaste, some awkwardness, but managing to hold it, even if it was not exactly proper. "Delicious," he murmured as he tried the first cube of meat.
She was talking about the booths, which was all well and good, it sounded like she had had a lot of fun really. Then she grimaced, setting him on edge. What had happened to her. He automatically began to assume the worst. "Unpleasant incident? What happened Miss Xiu-Ying? Who was not polite?"

There was a moment of pause as Xiu watched Yin take the first bite, and then she grinned sheepishly, leaning forward to take the fork from him. "Sorry, you're uncomfortable with using a fork, yes? I won't be at all offended if you tell me these things, Yin Cang--I'd much rather this be a casual and pleasant lunch between friends than anything where formalities are needed." Leaning back, she took a bite of a carrot, her tail happily sweeping the floor behind her.
Xiu paused, however, when the boil asked her to expand on the Fright Night incident. She shook her head quickly to assure him that it had been nothing serious--even though it had, to put it lightly, somewhat upset her during the time. "I, ah. I was careless, was all. I wandered up to one of the booths without knowing what the um, provided service was, and..."
More grimacing. "Did you happen to spot the kissing booth that one of the horsemen was running?"

Yin flushed a bit in embarrassment, but he was glad enough when she took the fork. "I should probably learn," he murmured, though he certainly made no movement to get the utensil back. He picked up the next piece delicately with his claws after shifting his hands back, popping in the chunk and decimating it with his teeth, watching her curiously.
She seemed hesitant, and started off her story a bit oddly, about being careless. A booth that provided services? Such as? She seemed distressed and he found himself leaning forward a bit in concern. "A...kissing booth?..." Wait, had he heard about...yes. Yes he had heard about it. "Were you kissed against your will Miss Xiu-Ying?!"

"Perhaps you could for certain formal functions, but I'm sure your friends would much prefer you to be comfortable when you're dining with them." The baku grinned at him, taking another bite of her food. She was pleased to note that he seemed to like the lunch she had brought him--although there wasn't much to prepare when her friend simply preferred raw meat, she had taken care to get the freshest cuts and garnish it ever so slightly.
Hearing the question made her jump, and the baku's ears immediately drooped. "N-no! ...Or, w-well, maybe! But to be fair, I should have been more careful! T-though I don't think there was any real indication that it was a kissing booth, and it actually really hurt and..."
The baku promptly clamped her mouth shut then, cheeks puffed out and her tail lashing behind her in irritation at the memory. "That was not a pleasant experience."
