:.Name.:
        Nerian Hilvani

:.Age.:
        36

:.Magic Affinity.:
        Life (Healing)

:.Appearance.:
Nerian stands six foot two, broad shouldered and slim through the hips. He's physically capable and strong, except for the mangling of his right hand. That hand is missing the last meta-carpal of his thumb and the last two of his index and middle fingers, and the hand tends to curl in when used too much due to tendon damage. His skin is a middling brown, smooth for the most part, but sporting a few scars here and there that have interesting but tense stories behind them. His hair falls to mid-back, and is a premature pale gray. He keeps it in a ponytail at the base of his skull, mostly, with a braid to either side of his face, hanging by his ears. His eyes are a dark brown, and his nose is strong, set in a finely-proportioned face. He wears mainly practical clothing, even though his status as a teacher and healer means he could have better, and sticks to earth colors rather than anything bright or bold.

:.Personality.:
One word to describe Nerian is stoic. He's a rather stern, uncommunicative soul, who works hard to pull his weight, sometimes going above and beyond what is necessary. He does all the repairs to his house himself, maintains two gardens, and has a difficult time asking for help when he needs it. Despite the loss of his fingers, he is surprisingly capable at certain things if he paces himself. Whether for good or ill, though, he tends to throw himself into whatever project he has, forgetting to eat or sleep. His focus is near legendary to those that know him well. When he does remember to eat, it is mostly a vegetarian diet, taken from his garden, but he won't turn down leftovers and meat if offered.

He finds joy in dictating his medical books to Haoma, his Guardian, so as to provide more knowledge for the library. He considers it a testament to his parents and the lives they led. Possessing a very fine memory, he has much in the way of knowledge to give, though it is mostly limited to his parents' teachings. He also has a vast storage of information on the properties of plants not native to Mistwick, though it isn't complete, and much practical knowledge on surgery and anatomy. When doing a job, he is efficient, firm, but also very selfless. He views others as more important than himself, and he will run headfirst into dangerous situations to save others if he must. This is not to say that he is reckless. He has a great deal of common sense, and a quick wit to analyze situations.

Although he is extremely patient and open-minded, he dislikes being in large, noisy groups, or being pestered about his past, which is painful for him to remember. He has a passion for books and gets annoyed if knowledge and study aren't treated with respect, though it is sensible to say that this stems from a scholarly nature, a breed of people that are notorious for their bluntness. He is fearful of boats and tends to avoid the Dry Docks if he can, and if he ever does need to get on one he is inevitably struck by seasickness. Flying with Haoma is much better, in his opinion. Sometimes he goes for walks where he can to search for plants that might be new, seeds blown in on the wind or brought by birds from the mainland or other islands.

To his students he is firm, but fair. Lessons are rarely sit-and-take-notes affairs. Most beginners are required to drawn the parts of the body at least before they come to him. He drills them much like his father would, throwing questions around and demanding impromptu drawings in the dirt or sand when he think they become too complacent. Nevertheless, students that prove their passion for learning to him are given an ally in him. He will defend his students against any injustice, be it bullies or bad situations.

Nerian is a Coreist, following the teachings and guidance of Mother Sun and Father Moon. His father was an atheist, but his mother followed many gods, and Nerian finds solace being directly in the middle of their beliefs. He does maintain respect for anyone who is a sphereist or atheist.

:.Name.:
        Haoma (nickname: Hom)

:.Magic Affinity.:
        Wind, defensive, and life, latent.

:.Essence/Animal.:
        Birch Tree/Gryphon (Secretary Bird/Cougar)

:.Appearance.:
This large Guardian comes up to Nerian's chin at his shoulder. He is sturdy enough to ride and is even capable of carrying Nerian in flight for short distances. Haoma's body is long and sleek, and his taloned forearms are more than just claws; his "thumbs" have enough dexterity to manipulate tools, including pens, and he is a competent scribe. He is more than capable of turning book pages with delicacy, though his range does not go into the skills needed to be a surgeon, like Nerian once had. His eyes have more humor in them than his User's, and he sometimes has a comic look with his head feathers raised like a crest.

:.Personality.:
Haoma contrasts his user with a cheerful, outgoing, and positive personality. Despite being an optimist, he is possessed of a sharp, sarcastic, and sardonic sense of humor, and an appreciation for the dry and morbid. Practical when assisting Nerian, he makes up for it by being frivolous with his free time, often encouraging Nerian to his frivolity. He can be a bit of a glutton, though he calls it being a gourmet, but he is not greedy. He merely has a long list of things he wants to try.

Mostly, though, he very much enjoys his job being Nerian's scribe and assistant. He enjoys the students very much, behaving playfully around the younger ones, and offering to correct the spelling on essays for any that might need it desperately.

Above all, though, Haoma adores Nerian, knowing the pain in him, and is fiercely protective. This manifests in his magic, his wind allowing him to create barriers around his User to protect him from physical danger. The Life magic he gained from Nerian is very weak so far. He is barely able to heal a scrape, and he patiently waits for it to bloom.

Nerian's
parents raised him in a valley community held together by hopes and spit. His father, Darroos -- a fire user -- was just finishing his doctorate when the world up and went wonky. He only met Nerian's mother, Calessa, who was a healer and herbalist, after that. Some of Nerian's earliest memories are of their wanderings before they got to the valley, and his mother teaching him about the plants they came across, and how to use the power he inherited from her.

The valley village was a pretty pathetic place, but it had people, and his parents were very much welcomed for the skills they had. His childhood was mostly about his mother's teachings, but as he grew older, his father took over, drilling every bit of knowledge he had into Nerian's young, fertile mind. When he was fifteen, he was allowed to be his father's surgical assistant, mostly out of necessity. More people were filtering into the village, but with stability and more able bodies came more risks and worse injuries. And so it was that Nerian got blooded in medicine.

When Nerian was twenty, a mighty earthquake hit the entire valley, almost completely erasing it from the map. The landslide the next day finished the job. Many lost their lives and all lost their homes. Nerian's family lost his little sister and brother, and Nerian himself lost his fiance.

The survivors packed what they could and left the valley as a graveyard, and over time turned into nomads, which had many challenges, including strange beasts and twisted landscapes. Once, Nerian saw gryphons flying high above them. They met a few other people, who told them about a magical, faraway island with safety and actual civilization, a place like Before. They wandered for years, searching for anyone who could tell them more, though most specifically a Where. Eventually they puzzled it out, and spent a year building a boat. Now, not everyone left the mainland when the boat was finished. Some stayed behind, finding the area ideal for a village of fishermen, though Nerian's father warned them that their chances were slim.

A week after Nerian and his family set sail, along with twenty others, a terrible storm came over them, and though they struggled for three days to stay afloat, exhaustion was their final enemy and they were carelessly wrecked against barren rocks. To Nerian's knowledge, he's the only one who survived, as he was the only one to wash up on Mistwick that he knows of.

His right hand was injured while he was afloat, and three of his fingers had to be partially amputated off. During his stay among the infirm, he spoke little and made no effort to do anything but stare out the window. In his mind, he was useless without his fingers. How would he practice surgeries without them? The patient medics eventually brought them out of his funk, getting out his personal information. Nerian Hilvani, age twenty-eight, healer. Needless to say, they were delighted to have him among them, and he slowly began to realize that his hands were not his only asset.

When he started to use his magic more, he was encouraged to work towards getting a Guardian. Though it was a late start, he was ready by age thirty. Haoma finally completed him as a person, breathing a wind of life into Nerian that had been missing for years. The snarky gryphon pushed Nerian into pursuing his own life, find his own house, and strive to pass on his knowledge.

These days he writes books for the library, medical texts, with the help of Haoma as his scribe, and is working on expounding on his herbal lore with the help of people more specialized for that, bringing in stories of the herbs out there that aren't native to the islands. Though he is more social than before, Nerian is somewhat of a recluse, preferring quiet, peaceful surroundings and creature comforts, except when he is healing. He keeps his past to himself, and very few people know of it.

Sometimes he will take on up to five students at a time for specialized tutoring, but this comes with his own set of rules for behavior. Since he is a healer and has surgical and anatomical knowledge, his specialty is trauma and internal injuries. He is mostly called on for complicated injuries and accidents.

Assessment day
for Nerian was rather nerve-wracking. The village he was raised in had very few guardians. His mother's was a badger mixed with mugwort, a cheerful creature that would chase off unfortunate bugs. Nerian has fond memories of it chasing his heels, keeping an eye on him when his mother was busy.

The boat ride over to the Life Tree was a harrowing one for him, and he was still feeling queasy as he approached the pool. In his hands were a roll of the papery bark from a birch tree and a scrap of bandage embued with a drop of his blood. The birch scrap came from a grove in the gardens where he spent a lot of time relaxing and meditating, a grove he would later build his house next to.

Gaia spoke to him kindly, though he barely heard the words at the time, and he crouched by the pool to set his things afloat. He meditated by the pool for an hour and a half in the golden glory of the tree before a large seedpod cracked open and set free the great gryphon, Haoma. The moment they were brought together was the only time Nerian ever cried in public, burying against the ruff around Haoma's neck as the new, gawky guardian chirped softly to comfort him.

The two were inseperable from that point on. Haoma knows that Nerian has no one, and keeps him company gladly.

Nerian and Haoma
live at the outskirts of the medics' living ward and on the edge of the parks and gardens. There is a well-marked path to him, and all the other medics know where to find him in case of an emergency.

Looking at Nerian's house from the front gate, the yard is a riot of flowers and herbs, with vegetable plants lining closer to the house, with neater gardens and a birch grove in the back. Better described as a cottage or cabin, the rough outside betrays a golden, comfortable inside. Two levels high and mostly one large room with two lofts, it is an open, airy configuration, with plenty of room for Haoma to navigate around or to leave through wide windows. The main feature, and central focus of the house, is the large, long table that Nerian is proud to say he built himself. At full capacity, it could seat two dozen people, though he never has occasion or want to have so many people in his house. Mostly it is used for workspace, and is terribly cluttered.

The first level is entirely devoted to work, with the kitchen under one loft and bathroom and storage under the other. The hearth is large, with a baking oven to one side, and above it is a large shelf for Haoma to lounge on, that opens out the window to a launch platform. There is even a rough walk on the peak of the roof for him to prowl around on.

The loft over the kitchen is entirely Haoma's territory, with a nest and his own bookshelves. The other loft is Nerian's personal space, bedroom and study. He keeps his room neat and comfortable, filled with pillows and books.
