Wash was sitting in the common area of the dormitories, his newly acquired copy of The DaVinci Code in hand. He was surprised to find it turned out to be a real page-turner, and he was happily engrossed in reading. Sure, he was trying to get out more, but sometimes it was nice to just let go and relax. His one concession to being less antisocial was the very public location he'd chosen for his afternoon diversion.
But so far, the dormitory halls had remained relatively empty. He shifted once or twice on the stiff sofa, trying to get comfortable, but finally gave up. He'd simply been sitting for too long. He carefully marked the page with a corner of his scarf, wrapping it around the book and leaving it in his seat while he got up to make himself a cup of coffee. He promised himself he'd be back in a jiff- besides, surely no one would take the book with part of his uniform still wrapped around it.

Otto was exhausted from a long and boring shift of cleaning all the things, watching all the things, and other such grunt work that came with being a trainee. Maybe one day he'd be a hunter bullying the lesser mortals to do his bidding. Maybe one day.
The teen didn't have the energy to go allll the way to his own room. His feet hurt, and he just wanted to collapse.
Oh hey. An open couch. Sure, there were other couches, but he wanted THIS one. The only thing in the way was a book. Otto dove into a faceplant onto the couch, swatting the book away in the same motion.
Book now safely skidded on the floor, the teen kicked off his shoes and wiggled his bare toes with a sigh.

When Wash came back with a piping hot cup of fresh(ly stale) coffee, it was to the surprising sight of a sandy-haired someone sprawled across the Couch Formerly Known As his. It was hard to tell who it was from the back of the head.
"Hey, sorry t' bother you- you haven't seen a book 'round here, have you?" He peered under the nearest couch, careful not to spill any of his drink in doing so.

"Mmhmm.." Otto replied with a muffled noise. His hand lazily fished around on the ground, but couldn't seem to grab it. Maybe he knocked it under the table.
Otto grumbled some, lazily rolling onto his side instead of his front. "Uuh... knocked it o'er there somewhere." He waved a hand, eyes opening into narrow slits. "It was in the way."
Good to know his kind and thoughtful self survived his ordeals...
He looked up after catching sight of Wash's arm, traveling till he found his face. "Oh.." It was that one guy.

Wash knelt, reaching for the book. He finally managed to yank it out by the edge of his scarf, and turned to say something - oh.
Otto.
"Yeah, sorry, shouldn't have left it lyin' around," he apologized awkwardly. He took a seat on the couch opposite, and stared at the book cover, but couldn't bring himself to open it. He hadn't seen the other hunter in a while, and, well... He was genuinely concerned. Finally, he looked back up at him, leaning forward on his knees and placing the unopened book beside him.
"So, ah. How've you been?" he asked quietly.

Otto felt a little bit awkward. Only a little. He'd never spent time with this man before, outside of the Horsemen's lair. A mission here or there he was sure the other hunter was present, but outside of that...
The teen shifted from his lazy lounging position to sit cross-legged on the couch he'd usurped. "Um.. fine, I guess." Otto replied vaguely, scratching his neck and averting his gaze.
"What about you?" He tried to act nonchalant, like he really didn't care one way or another. Because he totally didn't care, okay?

"I'm..." Wash looked thoughtful, giving the question the consideration he felt it deserved. "Alright." It was something to be grateful for- besides a slew of bad memories and new nightmares, he'd escaped unharmed.
"You look worn out, you been workin' hard? Sorry, I don't think we'd every really gotten to talk, before - well."He charged on ahead. "Sorry if I'm interruptin' anythin', just thought I'd get to know you properly." He flashed a bright smile.

Alright and just fine summed it up. He and the others knew each other's woes well enough to let it be. There was an understanding. It made it feel less like lying, and more like secret code for 'as well as I could be'.
"Just tired." Otto replied. Working hard was certainly the brunt of it. Or maybe it just felt like hard work. He slept, sure, but it was usually a disturbed and broken kind of sleep. Like the majority of hunters, he had his own nightmares that kept him from getting proper rest. He always chalked it up to a work hazard. It didn't mean he needed special attention. It just sucked to deal with.
Down down deep it went into the pit of his being, stored away and ignored.
"M'not doin' nuthin." Otto replied, leaning back on the sofa cushions. Wash's bright smile was certainly homely. It was hard to feel irritated with a smile like that. "Ohya?" Get to know him better. Otto wasn't sure how to go about it. A lot of people seemed to be social butterflies or at least familiar enough with its processes. Otto just felt awkward with others. It was easier to push and fight then try to understand someone.
His eyes dragged down to the book that sat beside Wash, the book Otto had swatted aside in his tired state. "Wassat?"

"Oh," Wash glanced down to the book next to him. "Just something the wife always wanted me-" he stopped, and tried again, "that is, before- oh, hell. Just some book. The Da Vinci Code, I think they made a movie." Way to be awkward, Wash.
"Do you like to read?"

Woah, Wash was married? Otto leaving his parents was one thing, but what happened to Wash? Did he get divorced? Did Otto care? Kind of. He was at least curious, but not enough to ask. That seemed private. Otto had heard about the movie, but he'd never seen it. "Yeah." He answered in regards to reading. "I usually just read the same one over and over. Catcher in the Rye is my favorite.."His eyes lingered on the book Wash had before settling back on the man himself. "Is it any good, or do'ya not know yet?"

"Oh, it's a real page turner, if you're into that sorta thing," he remarked. "I'm not very far into it, though."
Catcher in the Rye. Wash vaguely remembered reading that at some point - it had been... depressing. Well, at least, up until the end. "Oh, I think that was on a reading list, when I was in school. I found it a little hard to relate to, I guess. That was years ago, now, I suppose. Before my mother got me enrolled in Catholic school; they'd have never let us read that sorta thing there."
"Readin' isn't really my usual passtime, to tell the truth," he said, chuckling a little. "I used to like to watch sports, you know, like the Saints and all that, but this island don't exactly get dish network."

"Probably cause we get distracted enough as it is." Otto siad with a light smirk. Imagine if the hunters had unlimited Television access. Nothing would ever get done.
"Dad watched a lot of sports, but I wasn't all that into it." Otto replied. He recalled his father always yelling at the television when his team wasn't performing well. Maybe that was why he could never get into it. It definitely took any fun out of watching TV when all he heard was his cranky father getting hot tempered over a game. If he wanted to hear him yell, he'd... we;; he got yelled at a lot anyway.
"I was more into music. Like.. watching MTV or playin' on the drums." Sports involved teams. Teams involved people. Otto was raised in a small, nowhere town full of old people and no one to play with. So sports didn't appeal to him in the least.

"Oh, yeah? Were you in band in school? I was in choir growin' up, but I wasn't very good at playin' instruments, so I did sports instead." He shook his head. "A lot of jazz ensemble where I come from, and that required technique I didn't have, haha." He had tried clarinet, in junior high. His mother had begged him to quit - the sounds he'd forced the poor instrument to produce were truly awful.

Otto calmly shook his head. "No. I didn't go to school. I was home schooled." The teen scratched his neck and averted his eyes elsewhere. He'd had a stint at age 13 when his mother attempted to put him into high school since her work got busier. However, that ended after a couple of months due to his behavior and temper towards teachers and classmates.
Jazz ensembles? That sounded kind of cool. Jazz wasn't Otto's cup of tea, but he didn't outright dislike it. But as Wash stated, he was apparently no good at it anyway.
"What'd you play?" Otto mentally guessed football, but he didn't want to assume.

"Football. I wasn't good enough to make varsity, though. Played some baseball too, for a local rec team in the summers."He smiled, remembering. It had been a lot of fun, and had also been another excuse to escape his at-the-time annoying brother and sister.
"Homeschool huh? Did ya have any siblings? Can't imagine my mother tryin' to teach the three of us at one time." He laughed. "My brother an' sister an' I didn't get along much after we all hit our teens; and I was five years older 'n them anyways."
