The night prior, Eluf could hardly sleep. He'd been so enthralled by the day's excitement, and looking forward to the next! Such a thing had never happened to him before! His journal had a large new entry in it now, and was stowed away secretly in a small chest under his bed. Once he was awake though, the boy did his usual duties; watered the horse, ran them, changed pastures, and instructed the other workers there to do their parts on the ranch. His family called for a meeting later on, discussing their leave later on in the week. So Eluf would be alone to take care of the home... He was used to this sort o thing by now though, and it didn't bother him a single bit. Maybe then... Macaire could come see the horses..!
But now... it was time. The moment he'd been looking forward to all day. There'd been a significant pep in his step, and his smile was much brighter than usual, his voice somewhat sing-songy too. A few noticed it, but just took it to mean that today was a good day for the boy. Indeed it was... With himself released from his duties, he mounted upon Axe, with a satchel at his hip, and started to town. It hardly took long at all to reach it, where his earth toned eyes scanned eagerly for the large man he was to meet. Dismounting, he smoothed back his curly strands that had slipped out from the blue ribbon bow that kept his silky ponytail together. Dressed in a more comfortable attire, form fitting riding breeches, knee high riding boots, and a cream tunic, what he'd normally wear while out riding, exploring, or just working around the house. Once off the deer, he stroked him affectionately along the back, trying to keep the stag's state of mind calm for Macaire's arrival. The last thing he'd want is for his guardian to ward the man off.
Axe snorted softly, lowering his head to nestle it carefully against the small chest of Eluf, golden eyes closing to accept the affections and soft words. He'd tolerate a little better... seeing as how happy the soldier seemed to make his chosen. But should anything change that... Macaire could bet he'd be sorry for it.

That night Macaire can hardly sleep for thinking, replaying the day gone by in his thoughts and dreading the coming of morning. What was he thinking, approaching Eluf in the first place? Then taking him to the tavern, falling prey to his big eyes and awed expression, agreeing to meet him again -- all he can think is that this isn't an army. There's no casual acceptance of shield-brothers in the city, no unspoken understanding that sometimes two men will share a sleeping roll as well as a tent. He isn't certain what they do to anyone caught committing such acts here in Sunderland, but it can't be pleasant. Goal? Manual labor? Whippings? He's no way of knowing, no good way of finding out without incriminating himself. He gets out of bed reluctantly that morning, buys breakfast at the cookshop, and heads to work. Fortunately, since his job is to stand still and look intimidating, even his employer does not notice anything wrong in Macaire's frowning expression, though he does close three sales in the time it usually takes him to complete only one. At the end of his shift, Macaire walks the jewel merchant to his home as is his usual practice, then -- no use in stalling -- it's time. The moment he's been dreading all day. Even knowing that he could come to grief for it .. and aye, bring Eluf to grief for it as well .. he can't stand the thought of disappointing the lad. By the time the sun has begun to slip from the sky, settling lazily on the horizon, Eluf will be able to make out the broad silhouette of a man approaching, headed straight for him and Axe. He is dressed almost exactly as he was the day before, though some care has apparently been taken to neaten up his appearance; he's smoothed down his tousled hair (to little effect), changed into a fresh linen shirt, and found somewhere to have a good wash, the sort generally reserved for festival days.
He's also carrying something -- a bundle wrapped in canvas, and as he comes closer he carries with him the scent of a fresh dinner, though perhaps not what Eluf would think of as such. It's meatpies he bought in a shop, along with a few other things, and lacking any knowledge whatsoever regarding Guardians .. a small bundle of fesh carrots is sticking out of one pocket, presumably a bribe for Axe. "Hoy, lad. Got dinner, if'n ye know a place as would be good tae sit and eat it."

Axe gave a few soft exhales against the comfort of Eluf's torso, lulling into a more calm state of mind, along with the sweet words the elegant boy murmured. It seemed only Eluf was able to ease such a restless stag.. just like he was able to do with the more wild horses back home. Delicate hand ran along the strong jaw that the buck had, smoothing the already groomed fur there, aiding in the relaxing process. But soon enough, those honey green eyes were darting over towards town, gazing at the now familiar figure that was approaching. A wide smile couldn't help but spread on his face, taking a great deal of effort to bring it back to a more modest level. Letting go of Axe, he turned towards Macaire, and gave a polite bow in greeting, "Good evening, Macaire." his voice held restrained excitement, but his eyes were all a-twinkle. "I hope you have been well, today." he tacked on.
Axe wearily eyed Macaire as he approached, naturally puffing up to look his most intimidating, eyes narrowing at the soldier. Though... his nose twitched, and ears flipped forward as he caught scent of the food that was in tow, eyeing the little wrap, and then... the bright orange fingers poking out of a pocket. His tail twitched, and he stared at them.... then slowly back to Macaire's face with a mildly curious expression.
Eluf was rather surprised by the offer, face brightening, "Oh how wonderful! Let's see.." he looked around, a slender finger tapping at his chin. There were of course plenty of places to sit and eat in town, but... he had another idea. Somewhere more casual like, without others getting in the way, or causing discomfort, "If you're up for it, I know a lovely place in the woods that may be sufficient. It will give a beautiful view of the setting sun, as well, along with a rising moon and winking stars." he explained. His fingers fiddled along the bottom of his satchel, eyes drifting off with a bashful expression, "I go there sometimes for inspiration, and to do my work."

His heart sinks. He thought it'd be easier today -- he'd made a special trip to the brothels last night to remind his body about rightful desires versus wrongful ones -- but being away from Eluf had made him underestimate the young man's power over him. All it takes is that air of withheld excitement to get his heart constricting, and it only goes downhill from there! When Eluf suggests a private spot in the woods, then looks up at him through his lashes, for a few wild seconds he wonders if the lad is actually experienced enough to come onto him -- and he knows damn well that if Eluf tries it, he won't be able to put the lad off. Oh, small gods mercies! This can only end in tears! As physically intimidating as he may be, Macaire does not think of himself as a strong man .. in fact, quite the opposite, and he gives himself a mental admonishment for his weakness as he finds himself nodding in agreement. "Aye. T'will do right enough, oi'd say. Lead on, me lad." As they start he'll keep his pace slow, but once they step off of the path and into rougher terrain, he stops. This will never do, what if Eluf trips or falls? So all at once Eluf will find that Macaire has pushed the bag into his hands, leaving him holding their dinner. Several things clunk heavily together; something makes a liquid sound inside. And then Macaire takes him by the waist, lifting him completely off the ground, and setting him down on Axe's back. "There we are, laddie. 'Tis darkening out, 'tis best as tae ride."

Macaire's agreement had the lithe man twittering with bliss. He'd never gone there with anyone but Axe. It was a special place that he sort of deemed as his own little world away from the one he lived in. Out of the prejudices, and laws of society. A place he didn't have to feel worried at.
He lead the way as instructed, Axe taking a place further up to stand guard and be the first to spot any sort of danger that might be lurking about. Luckily the days and nights were clear, thus there was usually enough light produced to let even a human see with relative ease; even easier for a guardian, of course. Soon enough tree's surrounded them, and the buzz of town died out, birds, wind and bugs replacing with their own songs. It was lovely~ And Eluf seemed to relax a little more in such a natural environment. He looked over as the bundle was pushed to him, holding it, and blinking to Macaire with a curious expression, lips parting to speak... but he found his answer soon enough as the large hands placed on his small waist, making heat flush to the boy's cheeks. Once settled onto Axe's back, the buck looking at Macaire from the gesture, Eluf hugged the bag of goodies close to his chest, smiling shyly, "Oh, thank you.. but.. what about you?" he asked, looking to the large man now at eye level. It was rude to ride while another wasn't... But Axe seemed pleased with the soldier's actions, and didn't take such a lead but allowed himself to walk at Macaire's side... calmly. Looking down the pack in his arms, Eluf stroked it gently with slender fingers, "It smells delicious~" he commented softly.
Axe knew the place that was desired, and lead the pair there with ease. It was a little clearing, that had a large boulder sitting towards the back, with some fallen logs around it. The rock wasn't too high up, and completely flat on top, with a trickling stream rushing a ways in front of it. The sky was beautifully visible, the setting colours of evening gorgeous, and the air able to dip down into the opening, providing fresh, crisp air. Eluf's expression turned a bit dreamy as they arrived, "This is it~" he murmured, gazing up at the darkening sky.

What about him? Macaire makes a snort of amusement, sounding very like similar sounds that Axe has made, at the very thought. "Lad, oi weigh more'n his lairdship, and be sae scarred that if oi were tae take a tumble, me own mam wouldnae notice! Nah, nah, oi'll be well enough. B'ain't the first night march oi been on." And that's fair true: the difference is that this night he carries no weapons and no pack, which is something of a relief. And this time, he's headed off to a dangerous location: a private spot alone with a lad who embodies dangerous temptation!
As they come out from underneath the trees into Eluf's little clearing, Macaire pauses: he stands for a moment, head tipping slowly back, and stands in complete silence. He hardly knows what to look at first: the stream, the sky, the sweep of trees .. for a moment he can only marvel at it all, though there's a part of him that aches with longing for the more familiar beauty of Aireland's rolling hills. " .. 'tis as fair as the Small Gods has e'er made. Cain't say as oi've seen the loike in a long time."

Macaire's response had the gentle boy chuckling softly, a delicate hand raising to cover his mouth so as not to seem rude. Such a thoughtful one, the soldier was. Even Axe seemed please with the response and action that had been carried out. That was a first...
Carefully, he dismounted his trust steed, patting his back with praise and smoothing down the slightly ruffled short fur. The deer looked to Macaire curiously, before looking back to Eluf as the man started for the smooth boulder. He held the pack of goods securely to his chest, his satchel just shifting slightly against his hip as he moved. It didn't take much to step up onto the rock, peeking over his shoulder to his company to see if he was coming as well, "A little piece of heaven, wouldn't you say?" he asked softly, as he knelt to take a seat, lifting his satchel off his shoulder to rest beside him. Axe stepped forward to stand by the boulder, looking around, and stepped forward again, intently checking to make sure the coast was clear. Used to this behavior, Eluf merely smiled, "Do you have a secret place of your own at all, Macaire?"

The taller man follows along behind, dropping down easily to sit, as comfortable here far from any others as he was in the midst of the tavern. There is, though, a thin thread of uncertainty running through him which has nothing to do with their surroundings; it's all the same to Macaire where they stand so long as Eluf is beside him, representing unfair temptation! Why, his mates back home'd mock him, even they as knew about shield brothers and the like! Dancing attendance on a lad with pretty eyes!
Reaching for the sack of food, he unknots it and spreads the bit of canvas out like a cloth, pushing half the food in Eluf's direction: a meat pie that smells heavenly, a cheese made just slightly warm by contact with the pie, fresh apples, and a smaller pie that is presumably a dessert, as it smells just faintly of berries. There's also a dark glass bottle of a wine that Macaire very nearly had to bankrupt himself for: it's actually a good wine, hopefully light enough that it won't get poor Eluf drunk.
Hopefully.
(Then again, being what he is, Macaire does not have much sense for the lighter alcohols; after all, it'd take enough beer to drown a horse to get him knackered!)
"Nae, lad, not in Sunderland. Had a fondness fer a wee little lack back were oi were born, which some as said were hainted. Weren't nae secret, but them as'd go there were few indeed."

Eluf sits on the edge of the boulder, letting his legs dangle, eyes curiously intent on the bundle of food that Macaire has provided. He's shocked to see the spread once it's revealed, senses filled with pleasantries! His smile broadened on his face, but remained gentle and soft like his demeanor, "It looks and smells delicious, Macaire." But then... it occurs to him... the other man had bought this, and half of it was for the younger! a slightly surprised expression changes onto his features, looking up to his companion with mild fret, "Oh dear, I hope it did not cost you too much. I am more than willing to pay for my share of this beautiful dinner." father had always taught him the importance of fairness, as well as consideration, tied with responsibility. And it wasn't often that anyone outside of the family ever bought anything for him. His eyes wandered from pie to pie, to cheese and fruit... pausing on the wine bottle. Carefully, he picked it up for inspection, having a trained eye for these sorts of things, reading the hand written title, "Such a fine wine as well..! Macaire I feel as though you are spoiling me!" Eluf smiled warmly to the large man, fingers stroking the wine bottle tenderly, as if praising its maker. When had he ever had the pleasure of dining with someone else besides his parents, or Axe...? He couldn't help but notice the tickling warmth in his stomach flutter again... and travel up to his soft cheeks. If anyone was tempting, it was Macaire! Eluf had of course been around plenty of men, it came with the job of being a businessman, but... he'd never felt this way in their presence before. Perhaps one or two when he realized he didn't fit the norm for most gentlemen, but that was subtle, and didn't last too long. None had ever treated him so kindly as Macaire did... nor did he ever feel inclined to ask them to spend some time with him like this.. The soldier was frequently appearing in the boys mind, even if it were only their second day of meeting.
Once his survey was finished, Axe started back for the two humans, ears swiveling forward at the sight of the food, black nose twitching and flaring to inhale the aroma's as well. Standing just before it all, he eyed each article carefully, before looking to Macaire... as if gauging his reaction... before lowering his eyes to one of the apples... casually looking off after awhile. But he kept his post standing right in front of Eluf, lowering down to lay onto his stomach, his head still at level with the boys lap, taking on the act of a loyal dog to a master.

Embarrassed at the subject of money, Macaire does his best to ignore it: what Eluf sees as only 'fairness,' Macaire sees as yet another sign of their vastly different positions in life. His pa was right -- he's going to come to grief in Sunderland, because of his own fool mistakes! Something things to occur to him as he stares hopelessly at Eluf, and blinking he pats his breast pocket as if remembering only now the carrots sticking out of it. "Ach! Near forgot," he mumbles, hoping that neither Eluf nor his solemn Guardian realize that he'd forgotten because he was staring at Eluf. Taking the carrots from his pocket, he presents them gravely to Axe, with an earnest hopefulness in his scarred face. " .. oi dain't know what Guardians et, but yon lad in market said he might loike these."
It's Macaire's plan to use the carrots to keep Axe's attention, for the older man currently assumes that Axe is something like a large dog -- clever, but clever only as an animal is clever, associating a certain person with treats and thereafter keeping a careful watch on them to see if they will unexpectedly produce more.

With an answer not given, Eluf simply smiled sweetly to the older gentleman, head tipping curiously from the expression already being aimed at him. Macaire really was too kind. It was almost impossible for the young beaut to smile when in his presence. But if this was a gift of some kind, it would be impolite for Eluf to try and tarnish it... but hopefully he'd be able to repay it in the future! Honey green eyes blinked once, twice, as the soldier fiddled with what was in his pocket, gazing at the orange stalks with an intrigued expression. Carrots? But his mind clicked with answer once Macaire made his move towards the black stag, smile spreading more on the youthful face, "Macaire.. you are so thoughtful and considerate~ I thank you so much, for.. all of this~ " he murmured in awe, looking from the strong man to his trusty steed. The boy was so tickled by just how kind the other man was... it was so rare to find such pleasant company like this.
Axe let his eyes dart to the presented treat, ears flicking forward, nose twitching to gain the scent. Once acquired, his head lifted a little more, and he looked from Eluf, to Macaire, and to the carrots again. Encouraged by some soft cooing from his chosen, and strokes to his lean ears, the buck leaned his head forward, and took a bite out of the entire stack, chewing them thoroughly.... eyes closing slowly as he enjoyed them.. slightly resting his chin on the burly mans fingers in preparation for some more nips at the veggies.
It was a beautiful thing to see, really, for Eluf. Axe didn't often eat out of anothers hand but his own. "He enjoys these greatly, just like the horses do." those soft eyes traveled back to the other man, "How is yours doing?" he asked, a small hand lifting to gesture to his chest where the warrior usually concealed his totem... or at least where he'd last seen it.

The soldier wears an intent expression, focused on feeding Axe without either getting his fingers nibbled or otherwise upsetting the Guardian. He's got a good little bundle of carrots, and he presents these to the Guardian until the last one is gone, watching Axe closely. What will his own Guardian be like? Should he .. should he stock up on carrots? Apples? It's like feeding a horse: with soft lips and strong teeth, distracted momentarily by the softness of his eyes, until Eluf's words draw him out of his trance. " .. naught's happened yet," he confesses in almost a mumble, as if embarrassed. " 'Tis jest a pretty charm, is all. But old songs say, 'tis how it begun, with a wee little token." With his free hand he touches his chest, where indeed a small lump indicates that he still wears the token like a necklace, hidden under his shirt. "If'n oi had not seen 'em with me own eyes, oi wouldnae have believed it. Would've thought mayhap oi drank tae much that night, roight? Got meself ill, dreamed it all up." He looks hopelessly at Axe for a moment, for Axe, along with the other Guardians he's met, are why he cannot wholly discount it -- although he'd rather like to.

Axe ate rather contently. Having Eluf approve of the one who was bestowing the presented carrots helped, and soon enough all the orange stalks were gone. Lifting his head once finished, the buck chewed a few extra bits in his mouth, before his long tongue flickered out to clean up any bits on the exterior. Chuckling very softly, Eluf stroked one of the bucks ears in praise, even scritching behind one, causing the guardian to tip his head towards the boy, and sharp golden eyes ease into a closed state.
Looking to Macaire, those pretty earth toned eyes watched the impressive soldier, letting his gaze rest onto the hidden totem. It was a buck, if he could last recall, as it had the little antlers adorned atop its head just like Axe's. Nodding slowly, the small hand retracts from the grand beast, so as to rest back into his lap, "When the time comes for your guardian to reveal himself, we offer our assistance to you in any way you may need." since he grew up with animals, and taking care of them, Eluf had no issues when it came to caring for Axe. But he knew not everyone was given the same knowledge about such creatures. Chuckling again, he gave a somewhat playful expression to his partner, "Perhaps a new friend for you to play with, hm Axe?"
Ears perking to an alert stance, those golden orbs shot up to the boy... then Macaire.. before snorting, and turning his neck to look off as if disinterested in the entire conversation now.

Macaire can't help himself. At the thought of Axe playfully romping with anyone -- Guardian or no -- he snorts, echoing the Guardian himself. He's met drill sergeants that were more relaxed than Axe is! Not that he can't understand, with a Chosen like little Eluf to take care of, but the idea of Axe having a playmate is just beyond the pale.
"Oi can't see that one playin'. Mayhap would be glad tae have someone as he could order about, but not playin'. Did oi tell ye, oi met once a lad what had a Guardian he used in show? Did tumbling, he did, all in colored clothes, and had ribbons all over his points --" He indicates Axe's antlers to illustrate, with finally a twitch of a smile at the corners of his mouth. "Would look grand on yer lad, oi'd wager."

With the coupling of both Macaire and Axe's similar reaction, Eluf can't help himself as he chuckles too, giving the mighty beast a pat on his black neck. Yes, Axe wasn't one to make nice with other creatures; human or animal. He didn't seem to mind the young man's rabbit though, even tolerated it snuggling up with him! "Perhaps you are right." he finally answers with a soft fleeting air of laughter.
Using a guardian for a street show? Now that was impressive! Though Axe held the natural nimbleness of a deer, he was still rather large and bulky for one.. the image of the magnificent creature prancing about merrily in dance makes gentle laughter spill from Eluf, causing a hand to raise and try to stifle it, the stag's ears flipping up in alarm from the thought of ribbons tied to his proud antlers. Another firm snort is given, and he shifts to stand, walking to the stream to get away from the ridiculous conversation that was underway. Once the most of his melodic laughter is restrained, Eluf watches his partner take to the water for a drink, shaking his head in amusement, "Well I guess he disagree's." a light chuckle bubbling up, looking to their dinner which is on its way to becoming chilled with all this fun silly talk. "That must have been quite a sight to see." He'd always wondered what other chosen's guardian's were like... his only friend, before Macaire, Bell's seemed somewhat like Axe, stoic and loyal and all, but much more laid-back and at ease. "Perhaps we should start on our meal before we let it get cold~" he smiled sweetly, a whimsical thought popping into his head of.. Macaire wearing all the fixings that performer had, making him bite his bottom lip lightly go keep from any more giggles escaping.
