Chemistry study material clutched tight to her left side, other hand tucking strands of red-orange hair behind an ear, Liberty made her way through the back paths from the Library to her dorm.

She'd put on a sweatshirt endorsed with the emblem of Destiny City University a few minutes ago to combat the cool, moist breeze that was drifting through park trees. The lamplights had begun to flicker on in anticipation of twilight.

It was approximately a fifteen minute walk, and while Liberty had yet to encounter any evening issues, it didn't mean that they wouldn't arise. She carried pepper spray in her handbag just in case.

She had a small mp3 player in her pocket which carried a few hundred songs. Her friends had given it to her before she left for school in an effort to get her more consistently involved with technology. One bud was tucked into her pocket, the other rested lightly in her ear.

Liberty had passed a few friendly hellos to a few others making their way down the concrete paths, but the park was mostly devoid of people on a Tuesday night.

Anthony Darrow had just gotten back to the library after walking his dog home. It was not a very long walk, but Dogby had decided she was too tired to make it and plopped down on the sidewalk halfway home. He had to pick the corgi up and carry her the rest of the way.

Which was, actually, rather common. Dogby had gotten into a lazy habit, and Tony only reinforced it. Now he basically let her get away with it.

He had walked back from his home to the library and moved to the back of the building to power up. He made his way to the roof top, as was his habit, to look over the city and pick which direction he was going to start his patrol from. He always circled back, trying to take care of his little area. A knight in his Kingdom.

He was only starting toward the park by the time a youma was creeping in the shadows of the trees, its oblong, watery eyes fixed on Liberty from a short distance away. It was absolutely silent, mostly because it was not moving yet. It followed when she was almost out of sight, stalking with quick movements to avoid being spotted, and to get her alone. Prey was always easiest to overcome when it was alone.

Liberty did not have super-sight, super-smell, super-speed, or super-hearing. As such, she had absolutely no idea about the silent, deadly beast stalking her in the shadows. Perhaps, had it made more noise, the country-raised girl would have been more aware. After all, there was always the threat of cougars to leave a ranch girl jumpy.

There was a buzzing against her leg, and Liberty paused. From her pocket, she pulled a small, out of date cell phone, which didn't have a texting plan.

Instead of texting back, Liberty dialed the number for her dormmate and let the phone ring as she resumed walking.

The youma came streaking out of the shadows. It had stealth going for it, but as it turned out running was not its forte. It was larger, slower, built with thick limbs and a low body that allowed it to get lost in the low shadows but failed it in most other ways.

It made a strange sort of high pitched hissing noise that passed for a roar as it opened its mouth, filled with many oddly shaped and angled teeth, as wide as it could to get the sound out. It ran on all four feet, charging as fast as those stumps would carry it.

Camelot had started out from the library and was lost in thought as he wandered down toward the park. It was the usual go to for bad guys and youma alike, and if there was trouble to be found that night, he imagined it would be there. And he was right.

He saw a form not too far up ahead, and behind it another, lower shape. It didn't take him long to realize the thick shadow was a youma lumbering after a civilian.

"Hey! Look out!" Camelot yelled, while running toward them both, not sure if his voice would carry the distance between them until he closed it more.

Even engrossed in the ringing of her phone, Liberty Marie heard the high-pitched hiss. It prickled the hair on her neck, and she turned, expecting a malfunctioning lamp-post or a child's broken toy.

Working with huge animals for the entirety of your life made you very aware of how much damage even a slow moving creature of mass could do. Even a swing of that over-sized head would do her in.

What was more, Liberty had not been in Destiny City long enough to have absorbed the reality that went with the over-hyped television rumors.

It took only a quick scan of the area to make Liberty drop her bag, and phone still clutched in hand, she rushed for a nearby building--clamoring up the cement wall that separated the men's and women's bathrooms wasn't quite the same as hopping a fence to get out of the way of a raging bull, but it ended in much the same effect.

Bulls couldn't climb and, Liberty hoped, neither could this.

The redhead was further not prepared for the 14th century-dressed man, straight out of a Renaissance Faire, to put himself between it and her.

"Hey!" she was yelling back at him, waving an arm at her central perch. Liberty's instincts drove her to tell him to get out of the way, and so they ended up both sounding shouts of necessary safety at one another.

Camelot saw her scramble up the wall and looked fairly relieved because of it, thinking she would be safe up there for the time being, at the very least, and it would give him a chance to stop the youma from doing anything destructive without worrying that she was in the direct path of its rampage. It seemed like things were falling into place, in fact.

Maybe this would be a fairly simple rescue!

Or he was kidding himself because most, if not all, of what he did was complicated in some way. Sometimes vital, terrible ways, or just small and annoying ways, but nothing was ever perfectly easy.

The second he reached the two of them, planting his feet and lifting his shield to brace himself against the coming youma and, in his head, deflect it away from the civilian he saw the flaw in his plan. He forgot to count for the fact that the youma was strong. It slammed into his shield, tossed its head and sent him flying into the wall Liberty had just climbed up. And he didn't stop, going straight through it.

Walls of any kind tend not to like it when giant, Knight shaped holes were punched into them.

Liberty Marie was't they type to scream, and certainly wasn't one to use the Lord's name in vain, but everyone has their moments. A human body hurtling through a wall was one of those moments.

"Holy God."

The civilian scrambled her way over to the edge, glancing between the beast and the not visible form of a no doubt crumpled person. There was no way they could have gotten away from that without fracturing a bucket list of bones. Which meant they needed medical attention and fast.

Liberty was already digging for her phone. First, she was going to call an ambulance, and then she was going to try and lead the beast away. What happened after was out of her power.

Camelot groaned as he pushed himself to his feet. The benefits of being a super powered space vigilante sometimes outweighed the costs, but not by much. His armor was dinged, one of his elbows fins bent, but he seemed largely okay as he snapped out of his daze and looked around to see if Liberty had been a part of that wall that had fallen.

He saw her scrambling for her phone, and the youma pulling away from the fallen rubble and making its way toward her. It seemed the monster wasn't hurt, either.

At least, not enough to slow it down.

"Look out!" Camelot moved to leap on the youma, only realizing when he was in the middle of pinning it that he did not have his shield. It was in the rubble, and he was having too much of a fight with the monster, who did not want to be pinned down.

"Can you throw me something? A rock?" He didn't think she would be able to lift his shield, but he needed something bash the youma's head in with.

Liberty was aghast.

It was impossible to determine whether it was the physically impossible beast or the physically impossible human being that made her feel the most overwhelmed.

Her fingers fell short of hitting the numbers, frozen as the monster was jumped.

A rock?

Liberty pocketed the phone, eyes scanning. No, she didn't have a rock, but there was a conveniently crumbled wall right there. Scrambling to the rubble, she shifted a few larger pieces. With a heavy grunt, Liberty hefted one of the fragmented concrete blocks and neared as close as she dare.

The block was tossed, underhand. Whether it was adrenaline or skill, it managed to make it to reachable distance.

Camelot could see how baffled and overwhelmed she was, but he couldn't exactly help that just yet. He looked apologetic as he called a 'thank you', which was just contradictory enough to help alleviate the confusion in the air in absolutely no way.

He caught the rock with a heavy sound as it clanged against his armor, lifting it up and smashing it down on the youma before it could struggle its way out of his grip.

It burst into dust on the second hit, which Camelot was loathe to deliver because it was not the nicest thing to do, even to a youma. But at least they did not bleed in a conventional way, instead just turning into dust. He sighed after it vanished, then took a breath in that he regretted and gagged on the dust.

"Ergh. Ah. Well," he got up slowly, dusting himself off as he moved toward her slowly, like approaching a potentially dangerous injured animal. "Are you alright?"

It might have been something to do with the fact that the youma turned into dust, but Liberty Marie Reever was somehow hardly unconcerned with how alright she may or may not have been. (Any keen observer would only notice surficial wounds--scrapes, a dirty cheek).

"What are you?" came out of her mouth, instead. An angel? No wings. A demon? No horns. Not that Liberty had ever believed any of these things came in the conventional, commercially advertised boxes of white and red glitter.

Eyes scanning from the new pile of sediment up metal armor to an older man's face, Liberty stood there, not sure whether left, right, forwards or backwards would have been the best choice of direction.
