Otto usually got nightmares. It wasn't uncommon. But normally he was well on his way to forgetting what he'd dreamt by the time he woke up, left with only the feeling he hadn't slept so well.
It was the nights that he did remember that stuck out. This such night he woke suddenly from a terribly vivid nightmare. He awoke with a gasp, sweat beginning to bead from his forehead. Panic from the dream verse still welling inside. Even the soft glow of his night light giving little comfort or sense of safety. The dream had been frightening, but it had also felt so real it left Otto with a sense of dread and pain he couldn't even fathom sleeping again.
A look to the window told him it was still dark out; his cell phone reading it to be well after midnight.
A lump formed in his throat. He needed air. Needed something to drink to help calm down. Actually, he just didn't know what to do, but being in his bed where he'd had such a nightmare didn't sit well.
The teen flung himself from bed, stumbling as his limbs were still shaking. Out into the hall he went, not even bothering to close his door.

Clerise was wandering the halls. Her room downstairs was ruined, and her scant few possessions had easily been transferred from one room to another. However, the Life assistant was exhausted more often than not since her return. The redhead was out for a walk, still uncomfortable with the last few days' results. So, she was on her way to the minipet lab for some late night therapy. There was always someone there, and it was likely she could talk them into letting her handle the creepy crawlies-- the ones with too many teeth and tentacles to be harmless. Instead, a shorter body ran smack into her, a head of messy blond that came up to about the same height as-- "Prodigy?" Clerise asked, surprised. Was he out of the infirmary already?

Otto really needed to watch where he was going when he was running from something. He soon found himself face first in cleavage. The boy staggered backward, casting a nervous glance up to see who he'd run into. Clerise. He liked Clerise, which was nice since he liked so few of anyone. However, he wasn't sure if he wanted to be seen by anyone in the state he was in. That lump began to return again, prompting Otto sniffle and push past Clerise in an attempt to flee.

The lack of reply set off some alarm bells. Normally he'd give a non-committal reply, something short and brief, but still-- there'd be something. But no, there wasn't a word, just a skittish look upwards and an attempt to flee.
Oh, no he was not.
She grabbed for Otto's wrist, brows furrowed. "Hey, hey, take it easy, dude, what's up?" Her voice was soothing, but not condescending: it was worry, and a good dose of it.
It hadn't been so long ago that he'd been in a cell, after all. Two weeks, give or take-- and she'd never forget the way he'd been huddled on the ground like an abused animal with a broken spirit.
"You okay?"

More than anything, he was embarrassed. Embarrassed a nightmare had shook him up much like a small child. Having to face someone and admit such a thing, Otto didn't want to. He was presented with little choice in the matter as his attempt to slip by was stopped. He trembled, shaking his head to give her an answer.
He wasn't okay. And he was scared to say why he wasn't okay.

"Oh, Otto," was all Clerise murmured, tugging him close into a hug without delay. The poor guy was shaking like a leaf. Was this a common occurrence? How many times had he waken up in the past weeks and simply started running?
The redhead regretted that she was on a different floor. Maybe she would have seen him before.
No time like the present to make up for it, though. Clerise tucked the blond's head under her chin, wrapping her arms around his smaller frame.
"Hey, hey. Assuming you didn't see, like, H boffing some girl in the halls and are now traumatised--Nightmares are scary ******** s**t."
She'd had her fair share after losing Balthazar. The sight of the ocean at night still gave her the wooblies.

As much as Otto had insisted to himself he needed to be alone, wanted to be by himself, the moment Clerise had held him close that desire went away. He was private about his worries, his feelings, which was why e always sought a place to deal with them alone, where no one would judge him for it. Making his worries known to someone else was almost as scary as the nightmare he'd had.
He shuddered, and tried not to let himself cry. If nothing else he wanted to keep some semblance of composure, keep that last bit of emotion private.
Her comment actually made him give a short laugh, albeit his voice shook as he did. True, H banging some chic in the hall would be pretty scary s**t, but it was nothing compared to vivid nightmares he'd been having.
Still, she seemed to get what he was out here for. He was probably not the only person on the island who had such dreams. It would be ignorant to think no one else did. He still didn't say anything yet, not wanting to let on just how upset he really was. He simply stood with his hands idly gripping them hem of his shirt, taking some comfort in the hold Clerise had on him.

Clerise kept her breathing even, matching it to be in time with the slow circles she rubbed into his back with one hand. The Life hunter was glad to hear that little bark of laughter, as wavery as it was. She was good at comic relief-- she could do that.
Being more than that was hard.
"I had some bad ones," she murmured, her voice low. "After I lost Balthazar. The first time, I woke up screaming. I was in the infirmary, covered in wires and monitors and-- I ripped them out and started flipping my s**t. It was so bad they had to sedate me and then cuff me to the bed." Clerise snickered a little at the absurdity of her own actions. It had been painful then, but she could laugh at herself now.
Her wounds were healed. The least they could do was be of use in healing someone else.
She smiled, a little, and the soothing circles turned into light scritching, up and down Otto's back. "I think you've got it a little more under control than I did."
There would be no asking of what his were about, or what had happened to him. He would talk when he felt like it, to someone he was comfortable with, be it her or someone else entirely. It was a pity Killzone had--
Yeah.

Somehow, this was way better than hiding alone somewhere until the panic passed. The warmth of someone he trusted, the steadiness of their breathing. Small things that seemed to calm him down much nicer than his previous methods had done.
Concentrating on her voice and her story made it easier to ease his own mind. The shaking ebbed, the panic calmed. Waves turned to ripples in the pond of his mind. The vividness of his dream started to fade a little, no longer as glaring and intimidating as it had been when he first woke up.
"I guess.. if you compare it to that.." He said softly, a hand coming up to rub at his eye as he leaned back some. "..seems more like you're not afraid to freak out, though." Otto mumbled quietly, "It's just.."
Clerise seemed okay with talking about things. A lot of people did. Did it help to talk about it? He'd thought it was okay since the people who'd been in the cells with him had seen some of what went on. "I just wanna forget it.."

"Well, I wasn't then." Otto was no longer like a leaf shaking in the wind, but Clerise refused to let him go just yet. "I woke up the second time-- and just. I kept screaming. I wasn't so much sad as-- I was so angry."
She brought a hand up to card idly though Otto's hair, lightly scratching at his scalp.
"Rep had to come in and fight me, practically, until I started talking. I've had time to put my pieces back together. You haven't, yet. You don't even want to take your puzzle out of the box."
She hmmed, low, under her breath. This metaphor could get messy, fast. "Forgetting never happens. Not really. Long after your wounds knit back together, the memories remain. The most you can do is ease them, not let them have as much power over you. Because that means the big bads win."
Clerise pressed a kiss to Otto's temple, chaste.
"Everyone has their own way of working past the bullshit this place puts us through. There's no wrong way to do, except not doing it at all."

So Rep had gotten her through it? That was surprising. He didn't think Rep had any kind of side to him that didn't involve being a vulgar s**t head. Not like Otto could talk much about judging bad attitudes. Otto had a lot of people who cared, even if he didn't know it as much as he should, despite the outcry on Twitter he'd read when he woke up in the infirmary. Venting to someone wasn't something that came naturally for Otto. He'd never really had that.
Her analogy helped, actually. It put it into some sort of perspective for the teen. It was better to suck out the poison while the wound was still open.
"I dunno how though.." Otto murmured, taking comfort in the small ways Clerise comforted him, from back pats, head kisses, to hair scritches. Affectionate gestures that helped lower the walls Otto tended to put up around himself. He swallowed hard and turned his head to rest his temple against her chest. "I'm not used to talkin' about anything."

She nodded as Otto admitted that he didn't know how to talk about. "You don't have to right now, and it doesn't have to be me. You may not even need to talk about it with anyone but yourself, or your weapon."
Clerise continued to card her fingers through the blond's hair, idle gestures that she was accustomed to more than Otto was. She was relieved that he was calmed-- seeing him in such a state really pulled on the heart strings.
"If you ever need anything--" She asked, pulling back, holding Otto by the shoulders to give him a serious look. "I'll drop what I'm doing."
It's the same thing Clerise offered to any of her friends; she was a fiercely loyal woman to anyone who she considered her friend. She'd set the world on fire for them. For Clarice, Sasha, Dakota, Otto. Any of them.

Talk with Tenya...?
<>
Otto always tended to tune her out, but she was always there, right? Annoying or not, Tenya had his back. He'd almost forgotten. He took her for granted more than he should have. Maybe one day, he might lose her like Clerise almost lost her weapon too.
Otto looked up as Clerise pulled back. "Really?" He asked uncertainly, sniffling back as his nose felt stuffed up.
He took a moment to let that sink in, then managed a small smile. "Thanks, Clerise."

"You're my friend," she said, warmly, and pressed a palm to his chest. Right over his heart, so she could feel the beat there as it thudded. "Despite what you try to project, I know you're a good person. A nice one, even."
Clerise waggled her eyebrows all conspiratorial. "Don't worry, I won't ruin your street cred~"
She nudged his ribs with an elbow, just lightly. "Hot cocoa before attempting sleep again? Or...I was going to go bribe the overnight labtech in the minipet labs to let me in." Red brows raised expectantly, waiting for an answer.

It was weird letting people in. It was a little bit scary, too. It was always so much easier to put off a bad attitude to keep that risk of rejection at bay. People like Clerise and Eva seemed to see right through him, though.
Otto managed a soft smirk, assured his street cred would remain in tact. Honestly he did want to maintain that wall to a degree. He didn't want to let just anyone in. He needed that space.
"Cocoa'd be nice.." A hot drink to calm the rest of his nerves. "Why'd you wanna go there?" He asked regarding the minipet labs. The only side of that place he'd seen was the literal shitty side.
