The Breeder Route

So you know what you want down to coloring, breed of cat and how much youd love to own your dream cat.

Breeders (or a good breeder at that) breed their stock to continue the good standards of the breed. The coloring, the coat options, and the temprements are all controlled through careful breeding practices. They also often show their felines to gain titles and awards to help promote their breed.

Keep in mind that when getting a pedigree cat, be sure to thoroughly check out the breeder of choice and wither or not the type of cat can fit into your lifestyle.

The Good Breeder

Anyone can have an unfixed cat and try to sell babies. So how do you weed out those considered as "Back Yard Breeders" and the responsible breeder?

A Good Breeder Will....
~Educated with their breed
~Have a clean house
~Have a good enviroment for their kittens
~Have developed good socialization situation for the kittens
~Have the Kittens updated on their shots, and dewormed
~Have the parents on sight
~Open and honest and willing to answer questions
~Have a good contract lined out
~Check in with you after the purchase of their kitten to ensure he is safe and healthy

Questions to Ask

Please ask the following questions of your breeder. They should be straightforward with their answers and not try to hide anything.

~Are there any health concerns with this breed?
~What food do you feed?
~Has the kitten been exsposed to children, dogs, a wide variety of people?
~Are they up to date on their shots?
~What is the lineage of the breed?
~How much interaction have the kittens have?
~What kind of toys do you have for them?
~What type of litter do you use with them?
~Are the parents on sight?
~At what age do you recommend spay/neuter?
~At what age do you allow the kitten to leave the care of its mother?
~Do you recommend indoor only?
~Has any of the kittens shown signs of illness?
~How much is the kitten?

Price of a Pedigree

There is a reason for the price tag on a pedigree cat. They are bred for show quality standards, for health, and to overall better the breed. Good breeders wont over breed their cats, and should only produce one to two litters a year per female cat.

A pedigree cat can run you from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Is it worth it? If you are dead set on a specific breed, want the cat for its temprement (Ragdolls are lovey, Siamesse are talkers, Siberians are Hypoallegenic, Bengals are high wired), or its color, the pedigree route would be the way to go. You know what you want so go for it!
