Choosing the Purrfect Feline Companion

Theres the cats that we pick and then theres the cat that choses us as their humans. Cats are easy to come by (weither it be from a shelter or a friend of a friend) but there's alot to consider before getting your perfect cat.

~Can I afford it?
~Do I have room for it?
~Can I make time for it?
~Will my house mates and landlord allow it?
~Will the cat be healthy and happy living with me?

The Kitten

User Image

Whats not to love about kittens? Wee lil' cuties. Hard to resist...and of course alot of work. You hear horror stories of puppies, a kitten isn't that much different.

Be aware that when you aquire a kitten, it is VITAL that you train them. Show them where to scratch, show them the box and promote good box habits, and proper socialization.

Kittens also tend to be pricier for the first year. All the shots, the spay/neuter, the deworming, the flea medications. It can cost you.

The problem with kittens is that once they lose their kittenish appeal, many are given to the shelter. Litterbox aversion, next to agression is one of the biggest reasons to surrender your feline. But these behaviors are fixable and see the Cat Behavior section for more on this.

When getting a kitten, it is a 20+ year commitment.

Getting the Adult Cat

It is very easy to get an adult cat. All you have to do is go to your local shelter or humane society and look at the wide variety of what they have to offer. There are so many out there (because many would rather have a kitten) and they need some love too.

Benefits to having an Adult Cat
~Not alot of training nessesary
~Already went through the obnoxious kitten phrase
~Make Good Companions
~Sometimes, less stress
~Cheaper than a kitten (vet visits= once a year)
~Can be better around children

Things to Think about before Getting an adult cat

There are some serious things to consider before going and adopting a cat. You do not want to get into something that can cost you thousands on vet bills and cause you grief.

~Is the cat up to date on its vaccinations? (rabies, feline distemper)
~Has he been tested for Feline Leukemia?
~Does he have behavioral issues?
~Is she/he spayed or neutered?
~Pre-existing health issues?

Check your local shelter or Pet Finder.com. Often times, shelters will have great deals on adult cats. smile

The Senior Citizen

The geriatric senior citizen cat. They make wonderful companions and need all the love they can get in the last stage of their life. They often require more work, have more vet visists, and often times have health problems.

You can get a senior cat by going to your local shelter, knowing a friend who recently passed away and has cats, or simply by taking over the reigns for someone.

Cats can live to be 20+. Please make sure that if you do get a senior cat, that they may last only a few months to years.
