Emilie made her way through the hallway's mermaid-built waterways, tracing her fingers over the old stone fortress's walls as she sped past each room with a flick of her tail. Right about now she was making her way through the difficult paths from chamber to chamber delivering various messages. Of course, the Aristocracy could simply come face to face and settle their differences without sending her back and forth through the dizzying passages, but no~ It was her job as Page - the very name made her shudder unpleasantly - to help them settle things in a civil way. I only need to keep this charade up until I can make my way up the proverbial food chain. Just a little longer. One of these days I'll find my place, she mused until she reached the door. She used her powerful arm muscles to push herself up out of the water - a way of transportation that made these meetings much simpler, especially for her - and knocked on the door, handing the guard the unopened message and waiting patiently once he closed it for the king's response.

From the moment she set hoof inside the palace, Blaze had a hard time keeping her head on straight, it was going around and around so many times. How she wished she had at least five more sets of eyes so that she could take in everything at once! This was her first time out of the castle of the Wands, and even during the trip through the woods, obediently waiting on a knight in the company of the king, she found her eyes wandering from here to there. The knight she served had seemed a little nervous in the woods, and had even snapped at her when he had caught her eyes roving through the trees, ordering her to be more mindful of the path in front of her. She had meekly nodded and did her best to stare straight ahead.

Oddly enough, now that they were at the palace of the Cups, her knight seemed to not have any problem with her getting a proper look around. A bit strange, since there was more to look at here than in the forest, but perhaps he had wanted her to remain more vigilant on the road, where there was more likely to be bandits or other such hazards. In any case, he seemed not to mind that Blaze turned her head in every direction, awe-struck at the carvings and tapestries and wondering at the waterways where the Mers swam about as effortlessly as she herself was walking.

The meeting chamber was finally reached, and Blaze's knight bade her to wait outside of the door with the other pages, with the specific instructions not to wander off. Once the door was shut, Blaze walked over to one of the waterways, staring happily at her reflection, warped and distorted as the current swept by. Lowering herself gently down, she sat on the edge of the waterway, dipping her weary hooves into the water and humming a small, broken tune to herself.

Thirty minutes later she was still sitting at the edge of the door, tail dipped in the water as the King and his advisors discussed whatever the other King had placed in the letter. As a lowly page, she wasn't allowed to peek in the contents. In some countries it was even considered treasonous, and while she highly doubted anyone would do something like that in her kingdom, but she didn't want to take that chance. She was in a good place waiting until something better came along.

Another fifteen minutes and the discussion had heated up behind her. Great. Just fantastic. They won't be out of there for hours, she grumbled to herself, running her hands through her hair. All of this waiting was maddening, and she'd probably just end of taking it back in the middle of the night while the other King did the exact same thing. Finally the Knight slammed the door open, nearly knocking her back into the water and sharply hitting her shoulder. He didn't even apologize and threw the letter carelessly at her. "You could've at least handed it to me. Jerk." She stuffed it into her waterproof bag and dove into the water.

A few minutes more swimming through the channels and she was there. Several other pages sat bored in front of the door, and Emilie hefted herself up, knocked, handed the knight the letter and joined them. She was careful this time not to sit too close to the hard wooden door. She found herself next to a little filly who was staring transfixed at her reflection. She popped her fin in, distorting it momentarily until the current picked up again, and watched. "Bored?"

Though the feel of the cool water on her travel-weary hooves felt so relaxing, Blaze couldn't help but overhear the raised voices coming from the small crack beneath the door. She flinched a little; whatever the differences that were being settled in that room beyond the door, they certainly weren't being settled quietly and peacefully. She wished she knew more of just what they were talking about, but of course it really wasn't her business to know. She more than likely wouldn't understand it anyhow; she was curious, but she knew that didn't always equal the keenest mind. Still, she constantly had this feeling, every time she looked around, as though she ought to know something, but every time she tried to focus on it, it slipped away. Quite maddening, really. It had happened back in the forest when they had been traveling and her knight had mistook her wandering gaze for daydreaming. Of course he wouldn't know she had this feeling; that would be just silly.

She let her eyes wander to the ceiling, gazing in awe at the designs painted and carved in it's surface and wondering idly how the Mers had gotten up there to decorate it. She lowered her head once more to peer at her reflection, just in time to see it broken into several fragments of wavering light by a fin. "Oh!" she blinked her eyes at the Mer that held itself up out of the water and addressed her, one of the prettiest she had ever seen! Naturally, she came to a conclusion. "Oh no, Miss; I'm just enjoying your palace; it's so beautiful! Are you one of the princesses?"

Again with those extremely annoying voices. She could pick up key words or phrases from beyond the heavy barrier such as "sufficient funds," "strategic plan of suicide," and "surprise attack." Clearly the Kings were having a heyday back there planning out their next attack on some poor country, probably somewhere small, for land or money or some other trivial matter. It didn't take much to tip the hand towards warfare, and mearh were such emotional creatures . . . She flipped her tail at a small obstruction in the usually empty channel to find a tiny shell. Inside was a tiny letter, folded some many times it didn't seem possible it was this small. She figured it must not be for her and clamped the two halves of the shell together and sent it back on its way, fanning her fin out so that the current would carry it to its intended recipient. Now why couldn't the Kings carry their messages this way like the staff around the palace?

"Surely you jest, girl, although I do so love that comment . . ." If anything, her comment meant that she was destined to be royalty, like she'd always imagined. Someday her prince would find the right path. "If I were a princess, I certainly wouldn't be dawdling outside these chambers listening to them argue bloody war and carrying their messages. No, I'm a simple page, I'm afraid. Although I'd love to boost that up." She mumbled the last part, staring dejectedly at the water. She really did hate being a page. So menial, so meaningless, so plain and common. Now if she really were a princess. . . She sighed to herself. Soon.

Not a princess? Now Blaze felt a little silly, color creeping into her face and making the slightest difference in her already ruddy color. Still, how was she to know? She thought all of the Mers were beautiful! At least she hadn't insulted her new friend, enough to make her flick her tail and vanish. Having someone to talk to would really make the time pass more quickly. Surely her elders wouldn't mind her talking; they didn't really expect her to just sit there like a piece of furniture for several hours, did they?

"Well, I wasn't sure. Maybe you had just gotten tired of all the arguing; I know I would have." She beamed and couldn't help but move a little on her perch, her feet causing ripples to fan out. "You're a page? Me too! It must be neat, getting to swim back and forth all the time; probably more fun than walking." She tilted her head. "More than a page? That sounds fun.....I wonder why I've never thought of that before....." She realized that for as long as she could adequately remember, she had always been content with being a simple page; everything else seemed so far out of reach that they were obstructed by fog whenever she tried to mentally peer at them. How strange.
