Leyn crouched in the grass some distance away with his back to her, the splotchy grays and blacks of his cloak nearly indistinguishable from his mottled hair. They had been working on what the adept termed "quick meditation and core stability," but try as she might, Eanah just wasn’t grasping it. She'd snapped at him more than once, and after a while he had suggested they try a different approach before she did something completely crazy like raise her voice.

There was a small gathering of young Ysali dragons in the shallow valley they faced, but whether or not they saw the pair of Oblivionites was up for debate. Both she and Leyn were Focused, engaged in that sort of half-meditation he had taught her that lowered their heart rates and sharpened their senses. Unlike during her last hunt, if these dragons got too close, at least she now had the presence of mind to run.

She felt a nudge against her mind that bordered on physical and knew that it was Leyn testing her, prodding at her to see if she could be jolted out of her minor trance. He had pushed her much harder back at the Sanctuary and, oddly enough, she found that even though he was being gentler on her now, the distraction of being outside and thinking of other things was helping to make keeping control easier as well. When she didn't think about it, everything fell into place. She felt like she had a handle on things, at least until Leyn pushed himself to his feet and started toward the dragons.

"What are you doing?" she whispered, snatching up her staff and trailing after him, all while trying to keep her rapidly depleting Focus in check.

"We are going to take down a Ysali," he replied just as softly. Leyn strode confidently in the direction of the herd, raising his scepter at a smallish female that was slightly separated from the group. The dragon looked up, her gaze finding his, and reared back before moving farther away from her kin. "That one."

"What do I do?"

"You watch." He stopped. "Right here. Maybe I'll even let you strike the killing blow."

Eanah cast a sarcastic glare at Leyn's back as the adept continued toward the Ysali, dropping into a sturdier stance when he was halfway between her and the beast. She ducked as her tutor's hands began to glow. They sparkled with green light at first, but soon were shining so brightly with magical energy that she felt the need to squint. The other dragons roared in discontent and most slithered away, only a few lingering to see what these puny creatures were going to do. Leyn's Ysali reared again, and when her underbelly was exposed he struck, flinging a volley of violently bright lightning at his opponent. She fell back to the ground, her groan more pained, and when she was near, he landed another strike between her eyes.

The air smelled like charred meat.

Eanah hurried forward, her hand brushing the back of Leyn's arm as she stopped next to him. It seemed he hadn't left the killing blow for her after all.
